SENIOR HOUSING
First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 3 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by city or county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

Adult Day Care or In-Home Care: Many of us were familiar with “day Your Choice care” when our kids were pre-school age, and we needed the kids to be cared for while we were at work.
Well, what about having mom or dad living with us when they shouldn’t be left alone at home all day. Not only would it be boring, but it may be medically unadvisable. We have choices of in-home care such as a Home Care and Personal Assistance agency (see pages 50-52), or away-from-home care in an Adult Day Care (ADC) facility (see page 7) The available level of care varies among agencies and ADC facilities,
so be sure your loved one’s needs will be met when selecting care. In-home care with a caregiver affords certain “comforts of home” that may be beneficial, yet an ADC offers interaction with other seniors and activities not available at home. Both have advantages; we have had families tell us that they use both options, with in-home care on the first two days of the work week, and ADC the other three days. Whichever you choose, be sure it’s providing an enriching, satisfying experience for your loved one. ~

Skin Cancer Awareness in According to scientific studies, skin Older Adults cancer affects all ages however the geriatric population (that’s us) has a higher risk for malignant lesions.
The Baby Boomers first reached age 65 in 2011, and our geriatric population , 65-85, continues to grow faster than younger adults. We’ve had a longer time to be exposed, and the only “sunscreen” in our youth was a shade tree or a big hat. My guess is that you and I can clearly remember the times you were sunburned so bad the blisters covered your back or nose. Well, that sun damage is coming back to “burn” us again. According to an article, www.medscape.com/ viewarticle/770978, the majority of skin can22 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – WINTER–SPRING 2017
cers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), occur among older adults. The incidence of malignant melanoma is 10 times higher for older adults than
F•F
COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND SERVICES
Skin Cancer Awareness continued for adults younger than 40. One reason we older adults have a higher risk than younger adults for developing skin cancer is “immunosenescence,” a decreased immune function with aging. Adding this to the many years of cumulative sun exposure increases our vulnerability. Two more things: Our skin is not as smooth and uniform as in our youth so sun-damaged areas are not easy to see or identify, and we don’t have eyes on the back of our head; our shoulders and back took a lot of sun damage in our youth. It’s not surprising that many seniors visit their dermatologist when they notice the damage, long after it should
have been treated. This is exactly why we need a dermatologist; They know exactly what to look for and how to treat it. Sadly, these later-stage lesions generally have poorer prognoses and higher mortality. Just like other personal health care practices, a regular visit to your dermatologist may save you and your family a lot of pain and heartbreak from skin cancer. Please, make this a routine in your later years. ~ Editor’s Note: This article provided by the staff of the Seniors Blue Book of Southeast MS, LLC. Information is credited to www.medscape.com.

specifically for the elderly. Typically Studio, 1 BR or 2 BR rental apartments with full kitchens, and private baths. Services may include meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; libraries, computer stations, and other social gathering spaces. Rates are monthly and based upon size/location of apartment.
HOME HEALTH CARE
MEMORY CARE – These communities are either licensed assisted living facilities that specialize in delivering care to residents with dementia or a unit of a skilled nursing facility. Communities are typically bedroom-style rental units with common areas for dining and activities. Many are locked for residents’ safety. Staff is usually specially trained. Amenities vary. Services include meal plans, cable television, local phone calls, housekeeping, laundry maintenance and transportation. Personal assistance with ADLs available. Rates also vary from all-inclusive to base rates with levels of care. Payor sources usually accepted are private pay or some insurance plans.
RESPITE CARE – Provides a temporary break for caregivers by allowing a resident to have a short-term stay in a community that can meet their needs. Many assisted living communities and nursing homes have a respite care program. Residents typically stay from a week to a month, depending on the situation, and receive all the services of the community to meet their needs. Respite care services are usually private-pay. SKILLED NURSING CARE – Is provided by licensed nurses in nursing homes, 24-hrs, for residents with complex medical conditions requiring a high level of need and routine services. Residents can have a private or a shared room. Meals are served in a dining area, activities are scheduled, and therapies are available as prescribed by a physician. Some skilled nursing facilities have a separate secured area for residents with Alzheimer’s or other dementia conditions. “Long term care facilities” or “nursing centers” are synonymous terms for skilled nursing facilities. Most facilities provide rehabilitation following a hospital stay, and accept Medicare, Medicaid, and private pay. ~
Home Health Care Definitions continued from page 67 Occupational Therapy – services to assess and treat patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments.
