Staying Connected: It’s The Neighborly Thing To Do

“I was at a pretty low point when your flyer arrived in my mailbox…you’ll never know how that one piece of paper impacted me! Like a gift from heaven.”

Staying Connected is a not for profit organization of volunteers, who are Sun City residents, that serve their neighbors within the gates of Sun City. Commonly referred to as a “Village”, Staying Connected is the vehicle for neighbors to help neighbors stay in their homes as long as it is safe to do so. Staying Connected evolved from a task force led by Holly Field, who now serves as the Chairman of its board. The goal of the task force was to investigate the needs of the community to help resident maintain their active lifestyle. After considerable research and assistance provided by the Coalition for Aging in Place a volunteer service organization was formed. The task force evolved into a steering committee and in June 2014, Staying Connected was established with a fivemember Board of Directors. Their Mission: “To enhance resident’s ability to remain engaged within our community and ensure they have access to information and services which provide them with the lifestyle consistent with vision of an active adult community. The mission is supported through the various services offered by Staying Connected such as transportation to and from medical related appointments and grocery shopping, home companionship visits, reassuring call, caregiver relief visits, minor

home maintenance and home safety checks. Another valuable asset is their Resource Hub. The Resource Hub is open Monday-Friday from 9:00AM-3:00PM and provides residents with a broad range of Low Country support information. Homes visits and transportation, two of the direct services offered by Staying Connected, have experienced an 83% and 70% increase, respectively, when compared to 4th quarter 2015. The Village currently has 350 members and 250 volunteers. Volunteers are at the heart of Staying Connected’s mission. The organization is constantly recruiting volunteers and offers orientation and training for all who are interested. Volunteers are offered the opportunity to work in one or several areas with flexible time commitment. Sun City Hilton Head is humming with excitement. The excitement of residents thrilled with the addition of Staying Connected. Volunteers and members alike are benefiting from the services offered by the community’s “Village”. “As a child I always had a security blanket. Now at 89 years old I have gotten my security blanket back,” …Staying Connected Member. A volunteer simply states “I am paying it forward. I have received help throughout my life and now I am able to help those in need.” Evidence that community outreach changes both lives.

Seniors Helping Seniors: Developing a Village in Your Community

As you grow older, would you like to stay in your home for as long as possible? You are not alone. Several communities around the country, and in Beaufort County, are now looking at a new way to help seniors stay in their own homes as long as it is safe, physically and financially possible. This new, volunteerdriven approach, involves forming self-directed, senior support networks, i.e., Village, that provide programs and services needed for the continuance of independent living. Membership in the Village includes the benefits of seniors helping seniors, the services of a limited network staff, and a single point of contact to access a broad menu of programs and services necessary to assure that living in your own home is enjoyable, safe, healthy, and generally feasible. There are already several Villages up and running in Beaufort County and a few that are in the developmental stages. Local Villages are currently providing services such as transportation to doctors,

grocery shopping, and social events; assistance with minor household chores, light maintenance projects, and friendly phone checkups. Some Villages are also providing respite services in addition to meals for neighbors who are recuperating from surgery or short term illnesses. As each community is unique so are the list of services they will provide. Interested in creating a Village network in your community? The Beaufort County Coalition for Aging in Place (CAP) is available to work with members of your community to that end. CAP serves as an information resource, provides development consultation and has representatives who will make presentations community meetings. Once the Village is up and running CAP can also provide PR and marketing support as well as assistance with start-up funding (up to $1,200). For additional information on how to get a Village started in your community contact Deborah Edmondson, Village Developer and CAP Facilitator.

There’s a lot to love here.

Sometimes innovation is about seeing the world in a new way, not looking at a screen. At Brookdale, we are changing perceptions of aging. Actually, we’re doing more than that. We’re celebrating aging by redefining what it means to live well. But, of course, our residents use cool technology, too, like tablets, social media and video-chatting to connect with family and friends.

Talking to Mom About an Assisted Living Residence Chuck Bongiovanni, MSW, MBA, CSA- CarePatrol

Talking to Mom About Assisted Living Very few seniors want to leave the homes where they may have been living for decades, but as their age advances, the necessity of doing so may increase until the issue can no longer be ignored. Household matriarchs may be extremely reluctant to leave the family home and all of its associated memories. However, when it is time to have that heartfelt talk with mom, a few words of advice can help to alleviate any difficulties. Consider the Need The first step in talking to mom about a possible move to an assisted living residence, is to consider the need for it. Make a list of the pros and cons associated with moving. If the advantages are overwhelming, then the talk cannot be avoided. However, it is also necessary to consider what type of facility is required. Large, apartment-type buildings may be ideal,

but small, family-based facilities and nursing homes should also be considered. Ease Into the Topic Before initiating a deep discussion, it is helpful to nonchalantly bring up the idea a few times several months beforehand. This can take the form of a simple mention of other options after mom has experienced a difficult situation, but you will want to wait a day or two after an incident occurs. Timing is Important The best time to talk to mom about assisted living is when she is comfortable and her mind naturally takes her to some of the factors that are making her life sad, difficult or lonely. Gently bringing up the topic at such a time may be received as practical advice instead of as an attack. Discussion Ideas The discussion about moving may be helped by gathering information about her friends, who are already living in an assisted living community. Mom will be more open about visiting a community, where she will have one or more instant friends. Other topics, which may help in the discussion, include reviewing the safety features of the assisted living community and engaging her in discussing the ease of upkeep to the living spaces, the level of privacy in personal quarters, and the daily social activities available in the pubic areas. Finally, give mom some time to consider the information you have given to her. If she is still reluctant after a few days, ask for help from friends and family members. If the incidents prompting a discussion regarding assisted living are severe or if they occur frequently, a simple mention should be upgraded to touring a facility. In non-emergency situations, you can take no for an answer the first few times.

Ways To Avoid Kidney Disease Get a Primary Care Physician: Everyone needs a primary care physi-

cian,” says Dr. Coleman. “They are the captain of the ship of your body.” She recommends patients see them at minimum once per year, or as often as the physician recommends. Make sure the PCP performs a physical exam, runs a metabolic blood profile and a urinalysis showing creatinine levels once per year. Creatinine is the number doctors use to see how well the kidneys are working. When your kidneys aren’t functioning properly, creatinine can accumulate in your body. A urinalysis will also help see if damage is being done to your kidneys. Exercise: Keep active and exercise. Movement stimulates the body and helps all organs do what they were made to do. Dr. Coleman recommends 30 minutes of exercise a minimum of three times per week under the supervision of a PCP. Exercise will also help improve muscle function and sleep, which will in turn benefit kidney function. Even moderate exercise such as walking will improve one’s overall quality of health. Water, Water, Water: “Drink lots of water,” says Dr. Coleman. Water flushes the toxins from the kidneys and keeps your entire body hydrated. “You want to keep flushing toxins out of your body. The best way to do that is with lots of water,” she says. Those living in the Lowcountry should be extra careful to drink enough water, as they can lose hydration easily through daily activity. Control Blood Pressure: Uncontrolled high blood pressure is the leading cause of kidney disease. Monitor your blood pressure. Try to keep your top number (systolic) below 130; your diastolic number (bottom) below 80. Salt is an enemy. It raises blood pressure and puts unneeded stress on your kidneys. Avoid Preserved Meats: Preserved meats such as lunch meat, bacon, pepperoni and red meat are high in uric acid and salt, which are hard on kidney function and also causes painful gout. Control Bad Cholesterol: Total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg. Good cholesterol should be above 50. Limit dining out, especially fast foods. It is suggested one eat more high antioxidant foods such as colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts and low or non-fat dairy products. Avoid Cigarettes: Smoking affects your entire body, including your kidneys. Smoking can also interfere with medications used to treat high blood pressure. Control Your Blood Sugar: Try to keep blood sugar levels (A1C) less than 7 percent. Uncontrolled diabetes accelerates loss of kidney function. It is suggested people try to consume high-fiber/low-sugar foods. CRITICAL HEALTH CARE DECISIONS

h

It’s time to have a conversation about your health and life choices. Throughout our lifetime, we are faced with difficult, unavoidable decisions. Of paramount importance is the necessity of making decisions that provide us and our families with the best life possible of our choosing. This is particularly true in the situation of health-related decisions. These situations present themselves in the setting of end-of-life challenges or in the face of serious chronic illnesses such as chronic lung disease, or prior to major surgical procedures with the potential for serious life-changing complications. Also, if you ask your doctor if he would be surprised if you died within the next year and he replies “no”, then it is time for a real conversation and decisions directed toward living the best life possible.

Critical Healthcare Decisions is a consultative service developed to facilitate that conversation. With over forty years of critical care expertise as a lung and critical care physician as well as years of experience in medical ethics and a recent Master’s Degree in Bioethics, I am well qualified to participate in vour conversation to clarify your healthcare or illness situation. Your conversation, including family members or surrogates if you so desire, will include important detailed discussions regarding your future healthcare. The alternative is to avoid decision making until a healthcare crisis develops - when you may be unable to make your wishes known- leaving these very difficult decisions to your spouse, children, or surrogate. The Conversation is not easy, but it is necessary.

Hilton Head and Coastal Carolina Hospitals Walking through a hospital door is a little different for everybody. For a patient who has had a heart attack or stroke, nothing in their life could have prepared them for the uncertain road ahead. For patients needing physical rehabilitation, it’s a path to get back on their feet and the activities they enjoy. For expectant parents and their relatives, it’s the beginning of one of life’s greatest journeys. No matter what the circumstance, Hilton Head Hospital and Coastal Carolina Hospital are dedicated to providing the best care possible.

Hilton Head Hospital: Specialized Treatment to Save Lives

Since opening its doors over four decades ago, Hilton Head Hospital has provided critical care and proudly served the residents and visitors of Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Okatie and surrounding communities. With a core of dedicated, skilled physicians and well-trained staff, the hospital has been able to develop highly specialized programs for treatment of diseases and injuries right here at home. At the 93-bed hospital off of Beach City Road on Hilton Head, patients and visitors can find a vast array of healthcare services, such as award winning cardiac care including open heart surgery; a dedicated spine center and orthopedic center, obstetrics/gynecology, surgical services, physical rehabilitation and wellness. Specialty orthopedic services include, MAKOplasty, a robotic arm-assisted surgical procedure designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. At Hilton Head Hospital, MAKOplasty® is currently being used to treat the damaged part of the knee. Patients with serious injuries or dangerous symptoms can find treatment at the hospital’s 24hour emergency department. An online emergency room check-in service allows patients with some symptoms to reserve a place and come to the ER at a designated time for care. Hilton Head Hospital’s cancer care program, affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center, features Beaufort County’s only nationally accredited Breast Health Center. It offers 3-D Breast Tomosynthesis and a dedicated breast surgeon. Outpatient services are available at the two-year old Bluffton Medical Campus, located on 75 Baylor Drive in Bluffton – midway between Hilton Head and Coastal Carolina Hospitals. While patients and their families will find a range of services at the hospitals, they can find access to other convenient care at our Bluffton Medical Campus. The 60,000 sq. foot outpatient center was designed as a one-stop shop for the convenience of patients. They can schedule appointments with a primary care doctor, have blood drawn, receive their imaging and attend physical therapy all in one building. 46

...Committed to Quality Patient Care Coastal Carolina Hospital: High Quality Care Close to Home

Investing in the most advanced technology and recruiting well-trained physicians, Coastal Carolina Hospital has built an array of inpatient and outpatient services so you and your loved ones don’t have to leave your community to receive the high-quality care you deserve. In the last year, our surgical services offerings have been enhanced with the addition of the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. Our surgeons have been trained to use da Vinci to perform procedures such gall bladder removal and hysterectomies through tiny incisions. The hospital also is one of two places in South Carolina where men can have prostate biopsies done with the aid of Artemis - a new technology that brings detailed, three-dimensional imaging to bear on prostate cancer. Physicians have long been unable to accurately visualize tumors during prostate biopsies, but that has improved thanks to the Artemis device. Advanced technology has made it possible for persons suffering with a stroke to receive a higher level of care. The hospital’s stroke program is part of the Medical University of South Carolina’s telemedicine network. The network provides aroundthe-clock access to MUSC’s neurosurgeons, who can help diagnose patients with stroke symptoms via video – saving time and lives. The launch of this service earned Coastal designation from The Joint Commission as a primary stroke center. Patients and visitors to Coastal will find many other essential services at the 41-bed acute care hospital. Among there are primary care, a dedicated Women’s Pavilion, 24-hour emergency car, imaging, laboratory and pathology services, surgery, physical rehab and the only certified pulmonary rehabilitation program in South Carolina. The hospital offers wound healing and ostomy care at its Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Healing at the Bluffton Medical Campus.

Choosing The Right Physician Choosing a physician is not easy. It is hard finding someone to trust your health with. Asking for recommendations from co-workers, neighbors, and friends is a good way to start, but ultimately you will have to decide which physician is best suited to your individual needs and situation. If the Lowcountry is your second home, you still need to identify a physician who can care for you while you are here. Establishing continuity of care with your home physician makes sure you do not have a lapse in your healthcare.

When you are choosing a doctor, look for someone who listens to your opinions and concerns, encourages you to ask questions and explains things in ways you can understand. When you and your doctor work together as a team, you’ll get better care. The following questions can help you to define further what is most important for you when choosing a physician: • Is the doctor taking new patients? • Is the doctor board-certified? • Where is the practice located? Will it be easy for you to get there? • How long will it take to get an appointment? • Is the doctor part of a network of physicians? Hilton Head Regional Healthcare is comprised of board-certified physicians that believe in providing compassionate and comprehensive patient care right here in the Lowcountry. Whether you are new to the area or just looking for a new physician, our physicians represent a broad-range of medical and surgical specialties and they are dedicated to helping you stay healthy and active.

NEPHROLOGY Nephrology is the study of kidney function, kidney problems, the treatment of kidney problems, and renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation). Patients are seen by a physician specializing in nephrology for various reasons such as: acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, hematuria, proteinuria, kidney stones, hypertension, and disorders of acid/base or electrolytes. HYPERTENSION Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a chronic medical condition in which blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. Blood pressure is made up of two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which depend on whether the heart muscle is contracting (systole) or relaxed between beats (diastole). Hypertension puts strain on the heart, leading to hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease. Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, aneurysms of the arteries, peripheral arterial disease, and chronic kidney disease. Nephrology & Hypertension Medical Associates, P.C. is a full service, privately owned and operated practice.

Since 1969, their focus and specialty has been the evaluation and treatment of patients with kidney related disease and hypertension. While services do include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplant referrals, and care following transplantation, the primary goal is to provide patients and their families with the finest care to enhance health and improve the quality of life, be addressing their chronic kidney disease problems before these services are needed.

Elder Law & Estate Planning Center Plan for Tomorrow, Today

10 Most Common Estate Planning Mistakes

We all know that having an estate plan is good for our finances and for our heirs. When it comes to estate planning, the most common mistake people make is, quite honestly, the simplest one: they fail to prepare. And those who do prepare often make mistakes that can lead to family discord and financial problems down the road. Over the years, we have seen estate plans fail what they were intended to do. For your estate plan to remain valuable for you and your heirs, you would be wise to avoid these 10 common mistakes: 1. Not having a Will: Personal wishes, whether written or oral, will most likely not be followed in the absence of a will. Without a written plan that is set forth in a Will that YOU create, your assets will pass to your heirs according to your state’s laws of intestacy, not the way YOU would want. 2. Doing it yourself: Even if a self-prepared will or trust is legally enforceable, estate planning is a complex legal process requiring knowledge in several areas of the law, including estate law, tax law and property law as starters. 3. Not funding your revocable living trust: A properly drafted trust will prevent putting your loved ones through the expensive, lengthy and emotionally draining court probate process. Creating a trust is one thing- funding it is another. An unfunded Revocable Trust is useless. Make sure your attorney guides you on funding the trust once created. 4. Failing to understand the impact of life insurance proceeds: Many people do not realize that life insurance proceeds are NOT controlled by the directions in your will and death benefits are not part of your estate. Confirm the identity of your death beneficiaries with your life insurance company. 5. Failing to adequately plan for children with special needs: An outright gift to a child with special needs disqualification of that child from receiving public benefits. Using a Special Needs Trust will allow you to make a bequest for the benefit of the special needs child while keeping public benefits.

6. Not properly planning for incapacity: People are living longer, and therefore the risk of lacking capacity during your lifetime is increasing. With proper estate planning can you be sure that your health and financial affairs will be taken care of in the event of your inability to take care of them yourself. 7. Business planning: Who will own and control your business upon your death? Proper estate planning increases the likelihood of your business continuing as a viable operation. 8. Not preparing for minor children: If you have minor children, you should have a will nominating personal guardians for the children, in the event that both you and your spouse should die prior the children reaching the age of 18. Without a plan, the court will decide without your input where the kids will live and who will make important decisions about their money, education and life. 9. Improper beneficiary designations: Similar to life insurance, your Will and your beneficiary designations on IRAs, 401k’s and annuities should be consistent. A Will does not necessarily control the disposition of these assets. 10. Not periodically updating an estate plan: People do not like to discuss dying, and therefore people often want to simply execute their estate plan documents and be done with it as quickly as possible, without considering all the economic, family, and health dynamics that should be thoughtfully addressed and monitored during your lifetime. You should plan to make periodic revisions to your estate plan.

Is It Time To Sell Your Home? From the Moving On Guide, published by the SRES® Council, Seniors Real Estate Specialist®

Are you thinking of selling your home to move to a senior supportive environment? Or perhaps to move in with an adult son or daughter who can help with your needs as you grow older? You may be considering leaving the family home with all that it represents—the place where children were raised; the safety and security of a family unit; the physical space where your oldest and dearest memories reside. For seniors, it can signify the best years of their lives, where friends and community ties were made. Many seniors would prefer to continue living in their own home, or aging in place. Sometimes, circumstances work against those preferences: • Home maintenance becomes a burden • A major life event forces considering a move • An aging parent wants to live closer to adult children or other caretakers • Financial concerns make it difficult to keep the home • Support services are needed that are not available at home

Whatever the reason, there may come a time when parents, along with their adult children, consider selling and moving on. The following information is designed to help guide your family through the complex issues and unique situations you may encounter during the process. Many homeowners have previously bought and sold homes. However, selling a senior’s home can be much more complicated, due to the number of unique issues and decisions— and sometimes the number of people involved. Though seniors usually make the decision to sell, it is not uncommon for adult children to help them sort through these and other issues: • Is moving the best alternative? If so, where? Have other options been explored? • Are close family members on board with a decision to sell? • What is the best way to downsize a lifetime’s worth of possessions and family heirlooms? • What are the tax-related implications of a sale? • What effects might a sale have on future income? The financial, logistical and emotional issues involved in a move can be stressful for a family to navigate. Senior parents and their adult children may feel they are in unfamiliar waters as they deal with these questions. A real estate professional who has experience in senior’s issues, and who can put you in contact with other similarly-trained professional advisors, can be an invaluable resource at this time. You can count on a Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) to help guide you through the process and the special considerations, making the transaction less stressful and more successful. Your Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) can help you navigate this process. They can: • Familiarize you with the various types of senior housing available in your area. • Suggest important questions to ask when you’re visiting various housing options. • Refer you to other professionals who can help you understand and compare the true costs of each option, determine which options are affordable based on your financial situation, and examine the legal contracts involved in the process.

SERIES

2017 2018 October 4 - 22

A South Carolina Premiere! From Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winner and Spielberg’s Oscarnominated film comes a musical with a fresh, joyous score of jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues. With a soul-raising score, The Color Purple gives an exhilarating new spirit to this tale of 40-years in the life of a family in rural Georgia. Winner of the 2016 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival and the 2017 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

December 6 - 31

This Carolinas’ premiere of Disney Theatricals’ Tony Award-winning show is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of ‘newsies,’ who dreams of a better life. But when publishers raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies the newsies to take a stand for what’s right. Exuberant songs, high-energy dance numbers, and an uplifting story make this a don’t-miss-holiday-hit!

February 6 - 25

Our patrons’ #1 play selection, this Tony Award-winning thriller, Dial M for Murder, was also a suspenseful Hitchcock film. Tony married his wife for her money and plans to murder her for the same reason. He arranges the perfect murder…or so he thinks. When the would-be murderer Tony hires ends up dead, Tony will go to any length to see his wife convicted. And that’s just the beginning! “Tingling with excitement!” – NY Times

May 2 - 27

Our audience’s #1 musical choice, Evita focuses on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Peron. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show won seven Tonys among them Best Musical. Show-stopping numbers include “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” “The Rainbow Tour,” and “High Flying, Adored.” “Spectacular, innovative and starry.” - Village Voice

The Southeastern premiere! Hustle back to the 70s with music by the legendary Bee Gees in this story about Brooklyn ladies’ man, Tony Manero, whose weekends are spent at the disco. He finds himself in a love triangle with his ex and new girl Stephanie. “Stayin’ Alive,” “Boogie Shoes,” “Tragedy,” “More than a Woman,” and “How Deep is Your Love,” are just a few hits in this disco party of a musical!

A SEASON OF GREAT SHOWS IS JUST THE BEGINNING In addition to our five productions (above), the Arts Center proudly presents year-round performances from worldclass dance to side-splitting comedy. Therapy Dogs

Best Friends Go to Work!

The unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship from our dogs and the special relationship is hard to beat. These characteristics along with focused training can put some canines to work as therapy dogs.

Therapy dogs are different than service dogs. Service dogs are specially trained for a specific challenge such as vision or special disabilities. Therapy dogs make visits to hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, or schools with intention to promote healing, reduce anxiety, improve overall well-being. Therapy dogs are required to pass a comprehensive test with and without the handler. The handler must also pass a written test and submit vet health records for the dog annually. This test is a series of strict obedience and situational challenges such as reaction around walkers/canes, hospital beds, and children to ensure the dog can function in different environments calmly and effectively. Trapper the Wonder Dog and I have our certification through Therapy Dogs International. We visit a variety of local facilities, and there is no doubt we make a positive impact wherever we go. The visits range in length of time, and it is not unusual for us to have a small crowd form around us as Trapper uses his special charm. He is very calm and lets people warm up to him and then slowly asks to shake paws. He’s a gentle giant, as he is about 100 pounds of pure love. He typically gets lots of pets and then hugs and kisses goodbye. Trapper and I are blessed to have such an important job! Aunt Laurie’s inspires others to acknowledge the human value in everyone with custom gift baskets hand woven and assembled by individuals with disabilities at the SC Voc. Rehab Department in Beaufort. Many of the products in the baskets, such as dog biscuits, candles, snacks, and ceramics are also made by individuals with disabilities. Aunt Laurie’s established quarterly Lowcountry Ladies Luncheons, donates gift baskets to charities, and the owner, Laurie Brown, volunteers her time helping Special Olympics and visits the lonely or ill with the company mascot and certified therapy dog, Trapper.
