MoMA PS1 Names Winner of Summer Architecture Competition By ROBIN POGREBIN The transformation of MoMA PS1’s outdoor courtyard in Long Island City by an emerging architect has become one of the art world’s rites of summer. The popularity of these temporary installations has made its architectural competition increasingly stiff. In this, the 16th year of the Young Architects Program, the lucky winner is Andrés Jaque/Office for Political Innovation. The architects have designed a movable structure, made out of customized irrigation components, which will purify 3,000 gallons of water. The installation’s stretched-out plastic mesh will glow automatically whenever its water has been purified, providing an illuminated backdrop for the Warm Up summer music series. The winning project, “COSMO,” opens in late June. source: ‘New York Times’

Ojalá A strong visualisation was needed after the completion of the place. This located in Malasaña, Madrid which is a vibrant area in the city-center. Instead of demolishing all the pre-existences of the previous café, the whole work has been focused on transforming its atmospheric conditions with three actions: - The exhaustive painting of the whole space from floor to ceiling with fluorescent green painting. - The introduction of a colour changing lighting system, with cycles of colour scenes. - The pouring of beach sand on the basement floor. After these actions the interior of the bar becomes a composotion of elements that form the whole in a seemingly chaotic way. Everything drawn in detail threedimensional allowed a good representation of the place. With the interventions highlighted in a color. (source: http://andresjaque.net/proyectosrealizados.php#)

Educational

A Museum for Contemporary Arts in Brussels. The RAC-site in Brussels is a collection of big office buildings in the city center. It was build during the 60’s to house all of the state servants in one complex. In the center of the site lies a parking building with great potential. Since the site is being underused and most of the buildings are sold the parking is ideal for a new function. Implementing a museum for contemporary arts answers to the great need for this type of museum in Brussels. Three volumes grow from the parking structure leaving a simple yet clear shape as facade on the street. Freeing the building from iconic ambitions and using the former structure can creat a ‘space to culture’. A museum which will focus mainly on collecting and studying arts. Were only three high spaces are added for exhibition.

Quadra Project - Center for Innovation and Creativity: rehabilitation of Matosinhos market (Description): The project aims the rehabilitation of the Matosinhos Market, a building space, characterized by a strongly modernist architecture and a strong light, very white. This is the main “excuse” for the design of a transparent surface, a gradient of colors, a vibrant skin around the preexisting constructive elements – a kind of new contour. The natural light justifies the presence of color and the design of the glass planes deeply rooted in space, but that will gradually come to life and transforms itself as a crystal embedded in the pre-existence. The project seeks a consistent relationship with the space and structure that precedes us, emphasizing the strength and relevance of the new intervention, without destroying the identity of the market. Accepting its presence as a theme for the project, with the accidents and the inevitable contingencies of everyday use. As well as accepting its functionality as traditional market, and developing a new programmatic layout, mixing the market’s commercial retail with new spaces for creative industries related to design and ESAD design school. In the emerging need for continuity between traditional market and Creativity-Innovation Centre in the perception of the building as a whole, the project has clear solutions. However, it is imperative that we get conceptually touched by the typology of the new plans that draw the glass silhouette, at the same time symbolic and unambiguous. In this sense the project proposes a space linked to the idea of recreating the processes of composition from formal grammars of juxtaposition of glass panels. As a second “body” growing from the existing structure, committed to the pre-existence and drawing angles that surround the built elements of the old market. This strategy serves as an organizational logic, the development of a structural glass skin. We started with an adaptive scenario of transparent surfaces constructed according to a range of admissible contact angles and which incorporates a set of constraints (relational/ with the structure of the market)
