Sense holidays 2017

Tailor-made holidays full of fun, friendship and new experiences

Welcome to the 2017 Sense holidays brochure Sense holidays are fun, ambitious and, most importantly, centred on the needs, wants and aspirations of the holidaymaker.

Our holidays give children, young people and adults the opportunity to meet new people, have fun and try new and exciting things – whether that be snow tubing, swimming in the sea or sharing an ice cream with friends. They also give parents and carers a much needed break. This year, we have 20 exciting and varied holidays on offer, including lots of old favourites and a few that are ‘new for 2017’. There is something for everyone, from spending the week floating down a canal or sailing on the high seas, to escaping to the country on a farm or woodland break, or even trying something adventurous on an outdoor activity holiday.

Here’s why our holidays are special: • Over 40 years’ experience delivering holidays for people with multi-sensory impairments • A personalised approach – each holiday is planned around the needs and interests of holidaymakers • Experienced leaders • Trained and passionate volunteers.

“The holiday couldn’t have been better; it was like he had designed it himself. The leader was utterly brilliant, and a huge thank you to the volunteers. A gold star and a tick from us” Parent

“The venue was perfect for me, all on one floor, a bath and a swimming pool as well as beautiful surroundings” Holidaymaker

Getting it right for you Each holiday is managed by one or more of our experienced leaders. Our leaders have specialist understanding of building personalised group breaks for people with multi-sensory impairments, complex communication, and a range of learning disabilities and physical health issues. Leaders will work with holidaymakers and their parents/carers to co-create a holiday experience that is right for them. This leads to a valuable and enjoyable holiday for each and every person. Sense has considerable experience of providing volunteer-led services and creating a safe environment where holidaymakers and volunteers take a journey together, build relationships, explore new situations and step outside of their comfort zone. On the break itself, holidaymakers receive a minimum of one-to-one support at all times. Depending on each person’s needs, the level of support may be higher. This will enable them to participate in a range of social and physical activities and, in many cases, have the opportunity to try things they have never done before.

Holiday venues and accessibility Every year we return to some of our holidaymakers’ favourite venues, as well as add a few new ones (look out for three ‘new for 2017’ holidays in this year’s brochure). We visit all new holiday venues to ensure they meet the needs of our groups. In this brochure, we have marked the venues as either wheelchair accessible or easy walker. The wheelchair access icon means the venue has been adapted for someone who is a wheelchair user. However, the level of access varies from purpose-built accommodation to venues that offer minor adaptations, such as wider doorways and ramps. All easy walker venues have at least one downstairs bedroom and may be suitable for occasional wheelchair users. As a new feature this year, we have also added a symbol to identify venues with ceiling track hoists in at least part of the venue. Where a holiday is identified as wheelchair accessible and doesn’t have this symbol we will provide mobile hoists where possible. We have divided our holidays into three different age ranges: children, young people and adults. These age ranges are flexible – so, if there is a holiday you are really interested in but you are just outside the age range, please note this on your application form. Please feel free to contact us before applying to discuss the various options available.

Our address is: Sense, 101 Pentonville Road, London, N1 9LG February to March We carefully review all holiday applications and put together holiday groups. April We will write to you and let you know if we are able to offer you a holiday. Our holidays are extremely popular and unfortunately we cannot offer everyone a place. If we cannot offer you a holiday, we will add you to our waiting list. If we can offer you a holiday, we will ask you to confirm your place as soon as possible.

Overview Cost Sense is committed to ensuring that an individual’s financial circumstances do not prevent them taking up a place on the holidays programme. Our decision about who we offer holiday places to is not based on any ability to make a contribution towards the cost of the holiday. We do not seek donations from holidaymakers and their families, but we do appreciate any donations made. To enable us to reach as many individuals and families as possible, we rely on a range of funding streams. This can include contributions from individuals and their families if a holidaymaker has an individual budget, or direct payment for short breaks. If you are offered a holiday place, we will contact you to ask whether or not you are able to make a contribution via an individual budget or direct payment, or whether we can contact your social worker to discuss this on your behalf.

26

Transport We do not typically offer support with travel to and from our holidays, so please keep this in mind when making your choices. In exceptional circumstances, where no other support is available from family, friends or social services (for example), we are able to offer travel assistance to a small number of people each summer. Decisions on this will be made on a case by case basis. If you are offered a holiday place and think you may require support with travel you must inform us on receipt of your offer. Please note, we will ask for a financial contribution for any support provided.

About us Sense is a national charity that supports people who are deafblind, have sensory impairments or complex needs, to enjoy more independent lives.
