NOTE
Summertime is almost here, and in Las Ve-
gas, triple-digit temps are hovering. However, in May, the weather remains a balmy 80 degrees, which makes it the perfect time for a staycation or a getaway. Millions of visitors vacation in Las Vegas annually, and locals yearn to travel outside of Southern Nevada. Playing tourist with family and friends opens new vistas and attractions never experienced before. You can take a trip using your palate, tasting whiskey and other beverages from around the country and the world. What a fun way to learn! We love our pets, and today it is the norm to travel with our furry friends. Comfort and joy are paramount as we look through their eyes. Instagrammable moments call as we explore new sights and sounds with our dog by our side. That is true love. Rich histories, compelling stories, and an eye towards the future combined with embracing cannabis are highlighted in other cities around the state as well. Learning about other cultures and political climates brings us together as a nation and helps us understand people. So whether you tour your city with visitors and discover the tourist side of Vegas or search out new destinations, this is the time to plan that getaway. Vacations are not a luxury, but, according to scientific research, can do wonders for mental and emotional health. Southern Nevada’s economy is built on the tourist and hospitality industry. There is a pending vote on May 1 (after the publication of this issue) to legalize consumption lounges in the city of Las Vegas. It should be noted that the iconic Las Vegas Strip is not located within city limits, but this bill’s passage could cause a domino effect. While other experts watch states such as California, Oregon, and Colorado open the social venue door, Nevada might be the one to take the first step. While embracing a pro-cannabis stance, Sensi magazine is part of the mainstream, highlighting our community and the world around us. Thank you for reading Sensi, either in print or digitally, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with you, our readers. Yours in the new normal,

Leaving little to the imagination, Tyler and Wayne have guests hysterically laughing while bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “Now you see it.” Their philosophy showcases that while good magicians don’t need sleeves, great magicians don’t need pants. Tyler’s physique shows off that he was once a competitive swimmer, competing at the National Championships and Pan Pacific Games. He entertains with a quick wit, little modesty, and incredible sleight-of-hand skill. Welcoming CBD
Experience the new hospitality in The Greenhouse event. Hospitality shares its guests’ personal space, and one big factor is wellness. The Greenhouse, cannabis and wellness experiential events, will be centered around hospitality design, hotel development, lifestyle, and the pop-up culture. Guests can indulge in the hotel experience incorporating CBD and hemp as part of their overall feeling of wellness. Lori A. Neal, founder of Diamond Interior LA (DIAMONDINTERIORSLA.COM ), developed the Alchemy Hotel Brand to demonstrate how the hospitality industry can remain relevant and innovative by combining CBD with wellness offerings. It is estimated that people will spend 20 to 40 percent more to feel good while traveling. Neal is capitalizing on this concept with her series of events, showing the hospitality world—hotels, on this market. The cannabis industry in the states where it is legal has created a sizeable amount of revenue. Neal shares a new method for revenue for a product that is still challenged and heavily regulated. Marriott Homesharing Program began testing the concept in Europe in 2018 with great success and the addition to its off-property excursions has broadened its client base. Four Seasons also uses Pop Up Excursions giving its clientele a different experience.

Sustaining LIFE
The Giving Water quenches community thirst. Everyone needs water to survive, but so much more is required to live. The Giving Water (THEGIVING-WATER.ORG), the inspiration of founder and president Dawn Weir, creates a sustainable cycle of win-win for everyone. The nonprofit organization employs a unique business model embracing the sustainability of its element while funding other charities. The giving revolution begins with sponsorships, placing a company logo on the label on The Giving Water’s privately produced bottled water. Then the wave starts with distribution to the sponsor’s selected charity event for a joint promotion. There is also flow with 12 MAY 2019 Las Vegas
other sponsors that carry the water at their businesses. The bottled water is distributed for free to sell as a fundraiser. People buy the water, knowing they are benefiting a good cause because the label describes the business giving back to the community. Several nonprofits benefit from this program as well as veterans’ organizations including US Vets and Forgotten Not Gone. Weir created The Giving Water to be the culmination of all her skills and years of experience. Her ultimate goal is to leave it as her legacy for the benefit of future generations. –DH

Rowdy Mermaid crafts a new affinity for kombucha. Kombucha, the fermented tea developed from a 2,000-year-old process, is at the forefront of a beverage renaissance with the introduction of Rowdy Mermaid kombucha (ROWDYMERMAID.COM ). In a market where many drinks offer a quick energy boost, kombucha is rich in probiotics, lowers cholesterol and blood sugar, and improves metabolism. However, in the past, its benefits were often marred by its bitter taste. Rowdy Mermaid has changed its flavor to delight the palate. Rowdy Mermaid is the passion project of Dr. Jamba Dunn, who catapulted a garage-based hobby into a career following corporate downsizing in 2013. Striving to craft a kombucha with sweet undertones to combat its vinegary taste, he blends in fresh mountain herbs. Dr. Dunn developed the flavor to appeal to a diverse range of kombucha drinkers, including his most ardent critic and supporter, his young daughter. Rowdy Mermaid flavors are seasonal, relying on the availability of ethically sourced, adaptogenic plants, aimed at relieving stress and stimulating taste buds. The organic and non-GMO beverages are brewed in small batches with inventive flavors such as Alpine Lavender, Savory Peach, and Strawberry Tonic. Rowdy Mermaid can be poured from the first kombucha taproom in Boulder, Colorado, and is available in bottle and on tap in select locations across the Southwest.

Opinion OVERLOAD cannabisMD provides unbiased information.
With the rise of cannabis legalization in the US, consumers need to be educated and informed, so they know the products they see advertised are legitimate and not harmful. With so many kinds of CBD and medical cannabis products available, where do you turn to educate yourself about these products and ensure you partake legally and safely? Michael Klein, CEO of cannabisMD (CANNABISMD.COM ), has developed a cutting-edge adtech platform that provides unbiased, non-advocacy, medically authoritative information about CBD and legal cannabis. Consumers search online, ask the staff at brick-andmortar retail outlets, and tentatively approach their health care professionals for answers. This portal provides guidance for all generations. The young can better understand and make informed choices. Older demographics appreciate that the cannabis culture is no longer just unwashed hippies. Everyone is trying to catch up with the most-searched terms related to cannabis and CBD. All of the content is original, with a medical advisory team that continues to grow. The intent is to educate and give information that can validate cannabis as a lifestyle, health, and wellness experience with no reviews. Knowledge is power presented in a non-judgmental environment.

UNDER ATTACK Nevada’s underserved population faces a crisis if the affordable care act is ruled unconstitutional. by K E M A O G D E N
16 MAY 2019 Las Vegas
THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT OR OBAMACARE, HAS BEEN A GODSEND FOR NEVADA’S LOW-INCOME AND HIGH-RISK POPULATIONS SINCE CONGRESS SIGNED IT INTO LAW ON MARCH 23, 2010. This groundbreaking legislation authorized the US Health Resources and Services Administration to provide funding to states for the establishment of community-based federally qualified health centers. Primary care services are provided to underserved populations that otherwise couldn’t afford basic health care. Recently, a federal judge in Texas struck down the law as unconstitutional. When the United States Justice Department announced it would not defend the ACA in court, 16 states and the District of Columbia, united in opposing the ACA ruling. Nevada’s Gov. Steve Sisolak and Attorney General Aaron Ford are asking the federal appeals court to allow Nevada to join the 16 states in litigation that argues that existing health care infrastructures could face “catastrophic disruption” if ACA is dismantled. Nevada’s low-income individuals and families have been benefiting greatly from ACA. They’ve received a wide range of medical services such as prenatal care, yearly primary care examinations, cancer screening, mammograms, prostate screening, nutritional counseling, family planning, and counseling. “It was a definite boon to the medical care of our most needy and otherwise hard-working people. For example, needed medical testing and treatments were finally being fulfilled rather than postponed, which had always caused serious concern for the welfare of our patients,” says Dr. Shawn Mapleton, medical director for Las Vegas’ Community Outreach Medical Center. Most importantly, ACA mandates that insurers must provide coverage for individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Two bills, AB 374 and AB 408, are currently before the Legislature to strengthen the ACA footprint in Nevada. These bills must be passed to protect our urban communities and our African American, Hispanic, and LGBTQ populations. Affordable health care should be available to everyone, not just a privilege for a few. This is why the ACA is so vital to every Nevadan. KEMA OGDEN is executive director of the Community Outreach Medical Center and president and co-founder of the Ogden Family Foundation, both nonprofit organizations. She is the co-owner of TOP Notch THC and the first minority female to own a cannabis dispensary and cultivation business based in Las Vegas.

According to the Whisky Advocate, Irish whisky is one of the fastest growing spirits in popularity, and Big Whiskey’s offers a trip around the island with Jameson, Midleton, Powers, and Redbreast. As for whiskeys distilled in the US, different tastes come from different regions. As Tony Depasquale, owner of the Las Vegas location, explains, “It depends on your flavor palate. Bourbons tend to be sweeter due to the corn mash used. However, there are some excellent bourbons made with a rye mash.” Bourbon must be distilled in the US. WHAT’S IN A NAME? The difference between whiskey and whisky is that if the spirit is from Scotland, Japan, or Canada, it is spelled whisky without an e. If it is made in the United States or Ireland, it is spelled whiskey with an e. However, Maker’s Mark and Old Forester are two American brands using the whisky spelling. The only time the spelling is essential is Scotch whisky. For those who love a cocktail, Big Whiskey’s blends and combines different beverages to create unique and memorable drinks. #VegasBorn, its signature Manhattan, tastes like eggnog. Golden Knightarita is its unique take on a margarita and Nevada Peach celebrates the fruit. Fun fact: The state of Nevada is one of the most prolific producers of peach variations in the US. A good whiskey can genuinely enhance a meal, and Big Whiskey’s offers dishes that pair well with spirits. Bourbon Glazed Salmon is grilled salmon glazed with bourbon-infused sweet sauce served over rice pilaf with a side of steamed broccoli. Baby Rack Ribs is a Big Whiskey’s favorite made with slow-cooked pork ribs chargrilled and basted with honey whiskey barbecue sauce and served with loaded fries and cole slaw. Depasquale’s personal preference is Rick House Ribeye, a hand-cut USDA Choice 12-ounce ribeye, grilled, topped with signature steak butter and served with steamed broccoli and loaded mashed potatoes with a shot of Jack Daniels. However, there is an extensive menu that includes burgers, pasta, and even salads for those who love leafy greens. There are only three desserts, but try the Whiskey Bananas Foster for a heavenly experience. There are 27 televisions at Big Whiskey’s, but, as Depasquale explains, “We celebrate sports, but we are not a sports bar. We welcome everyone including families, friends, industry night, date night, and those who love a good drink and fun times.” The legend of Big Whiskey’s started in a small, corner tavern in the Midwest almost 30 years ago. Today, it embraces the familiarity of the past while sharing the tastes of today with excellent service, awesome food, entertaining atmosphere, and good whiskey.

Locals and tourists (in the know) keep returning because each bite speaks volumes of the love affair with Emeril’s inventive, texturally rich, and well-executed dishes. Renowned Cavan, fittingly, was our last stop on this culinary expedition. We walked into this stately remodeled mansion turned restaurant for one last good New Orleans meal that took us back in time. The chili-garlic clams with smoked garlic and sweet potatoes grabbed our attention as one of the most innovative dishes of our visit. We pondered our delightful meal in the once-faded grandeur of a home now revitalized as a hot eatery. We couldn’t help but think of the many lives that passed through this home and the streets of New Orleans. People are living their adventures, sharing meals, and telling tales to future generations. Happily, we now have our own New Orleans stories to share. ELAINE AND SCOTT HARRIS are journalists and sommeliers writing about luxury travel, cuisine, wine, and spirits.

the legends of the Knights of the Round Table. I learned that some stories claim that Joseph, while spreading the Gospel, brought the Holy Grail to the Glastonbury area—a place where many Arthurian legends linger. In the early 19th century, poet William Blake imagined the possibility that Jesus even came to this spot when he was young, and his piece titled “Jerusalem” notes the below passage:
And did those feet in ancient times Walk upon England’s mountains green And was the Holy Lamb of God On England’s pleasant pastures seen? Even earlier, the Tor was considered the place where fairies entered and left the earth. The more I studied and learned about the area, the more fascinating it all became. Two years later, Billie and I returned, this time to climb and stand atop the Tor and breathe in all that mythology/history/splendor for ourselves. Our Glastonbury experience taught us perhaps the two most important tenets of travel: You never know when or where the really cool stuff is going to happen, and sometimes the trip itself is only the beginning of the journey.
Vacation is Static; Travel is Action No matter the convenience or conveyance—we started by walking, remember—humans have always loved to travel. Lusted to travel. To go places we haven’t seen. To see things we didn’t know existed. To cross impassable rivers and climb distant mountains. We will go to incredible lengths to reach out-of-the-way places for that moment of complete, total, gobsmacking surprise that stays with us forever. Travel expands our boundaries and expands our worldview. Moving from one place to another and seeing locales that were once no more than dots on a map is easier than ever, although almost anyone who’s been flying for more than 20 years knows it can be a lot less fun than it used to be, too. Early travelers used natural landmarks as guideposts to other places. Today, we just dial in the GPS and sit back. Soon we’ll have driverless vehicles and, if the billionaires have their way, tourist space vehicles, and people will pony up and stand in line to board, no matter the cost. Vacations are one thing, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with hopping a jet and sitting in a beach chair contemplating the horizon while sipping fruity rum drinks. We can all use that tropical getaway every now and again. sensimag.com MAY 2019 35

BEEN A NATURAL PORT OF ENTRY FOR CANNABIS INTO EUROPE SINCE THE TRADE BEGAN. The country was generally tolerant of its use until the UN Single Convention on Narcotics pressured it (along with the rest of the world) to outlaw the plant in 1967. Even so, for the hippies and other pilgrims who rebelled against the iron fist of global prohibition throughout the next couple decades, Spain remained a pot of gold at the end of the Hashish Trail. Never happy with prohibition, Spaniards have done what they could to dance around it. In the 1980s, the Supreme Court ruled that cannabis possession for self-consumption couldn’t be prosecuted, and the government decriminalized all drug use. Then, alarmed by the amount of Moroccan hashish flooding Spanish streets, the government cracked down in 1992 with a decree that anyone carrying cannabis in public could be searched and fined (from €350 on up to €30,000), leading to the arrest of 300,000 people—and a new name for Spanish stoners: “kangaroos,” because they stashed joints in their underpants where the police couldn’t search. Unwilling to risk being harassed on the street, Spaniards turned to home cultivation in a huge way. In 1994, activists planted 200 cannabis plants in Catalonia, and five years later, legendary Australian breeder Scott Blakey, aka Shantibaba, sprinkled Spain with 25,000 seeds of strains he had created for a Dutch company, forever changing the gene pool—for the better. sensimag.com MAY 2019 39

¡VIVA LA CANNABIS! Spaniards celebrate their love for the leaf (Spain is behind only the United States and Iceland in per capita consumption) during Spannabis and the World Cannabis Conference, which brings more than 30,000 aficionados from Europe and around the world to Barcelona during the second weekend of every March for an expo that rivals Northern California’s famed Emerald Cup as the world’s largest. Reflecting Spaniards’ preference for smoking flower over vaping and edibles, the show is a deep dive into the serious genetics that have landed in the country as well as the tools and inputs necessary to grow them. It’s a plant lover’s paradise—and if you’re into CBD, even better. selling CBD products and cannabis seeds are as common as tapas bars. Though home growers are technically supposed to keep their plants away from public view, it’s not uncommon to catch a glimpse of one or two on a Barcelona balcony. Today’s freedom is the result of an active cannabis rights movement that grew up in the 1990s and saw opportunity in provisions of Spanish law that allowed for private cultivation and shared consumption. The group used those as the basis for founding the country’s first cannabis club, Club de Catadores de Cannabis de Barcelona, a collective that pooled its resources to grow cannabis for members’ personal consumption in members-only establishments, in 2001. Immediately slapped with lawsuits that went all the way to the Supreme Court—which ruled in the club’s favor—Club de Catadores paved the way for cannabis social clubs to start popping up throughout Spain. And pop up they did. Ranging in style from hippie living rooms to sleek wellness centers to a famous Barcelona collective open only to women in their 80s, the clubs offer cannabis flower, hashish, concentrates, and edibles for members’ shared consumption on the premises. imports—and no one seemed concerned about the legality of that—but there’s really no need to go down that road, because the flower grown in Spain is out of this world. In 2017, the Catalonian government voted overwhelmingly to regulate cannabis clubs, and it now oversees transportation, packaging, hygienic storage, testing, and distribution of the cannabis that clubs cultivate. Though the industry is legitimizing and even has an agreed-upon code of ethics and set of rules (such as limiting members to receiving three grams per day and 25 grams per week), the responsibility for enforcing cannabis laws falls to police agencies and the courts. This can be inconsistent, and the threat of police raids has forced many clubs to stop growing their own and buy products from the black market (which explains the California connection). A serious effort to legalize is under way throughout Spain, but until that happens, social clubs operate in a legal vacuum—which is a shame. A study by Autonomous University

The firm’s first cannabis client came to IDEAL two and half years ago. The owner of a cannabis business wanted to sell to a Canadian public company, and it needed Nevada counsel.
