TOAST TO THE
HIGH LIFE This holiday drink isn’t exactly a “cocktail”—there’s no alcohol in it. But it’s certainly not a “mocktail,” thanks to the elevating effects delivered by the THC. So let’s call it what it is: a delicious, festive beverage that pairs well with the holiday season. The special, uplifting ingredient: cannabis-infused ZootDrops. ZootDrops come in two flavors/feelings, each delivering a different elevating experience. The Lemon “Kick Back” Relaxation drops combine THC with the soothing properties of chamomile and green tea extracts. The Mandarin Lime “Yippie Ki-yay” High Energy version brings caffeine derived from green coffee bean extract into the mix of all-natural ingredients. Both versions are delicious additions to any beverage concoction—especially this special seasonal recipe created by the masterminds at Zoots just for Sensi readers.

PET vacay
SE A SA LT CARAME LS
During the busy holiday travel season, finding a friend to watch your four-legged family members as you jet to grandma’s can be tough. Dog Vacay has you covered. Head to the website and tap into a community of highly vetted and approved pet sitters in your area available at a moment’s notice. Read their bios and reviews, look at their photos, see their pricing, send them a question, and more before you set up a meet and greet with your pet or just go ahead and book. Your reservation, which ranges in price but typically starts around $25 per night per pet in Denver, comes with 24/7 support from the corporate site, daily photo updates from your sitter, and premium pet insurance that covers up to $25,000 in vet bills per pet. I recently entrusted my 15-year-old chihuahua to the care of a sitter named Frank near Cheesman Park. He has his own elderly pet so I knew my little old lady would feel right at home with him. Two days later, I returned and picked up one happy dog whose tail was a-waggin’. She gives two paws up to DOGVACAY.COM .
Back in the medieval times, caroling was known as “wassailing.” Wassailing happened in apple orchards as much as in front of people’s homes. Why wassail in the apple orchard? Traditionally, at the end of the year, farmers would load up on apple cider, then sing praises to the apple trees. In return, the trees would provide a bountiful harvest. This holiday season, you can reconnect with this tradition by unwrapping an Apple Cider Sea Salt Caramel from Rebel Edibles and wassailing with family and friends. These all-organic confections, with 8 mg THC per serving, ooze the juices of the orchard’s most valued prize, with a smidge of Saigon cinnamon and sea salt for a truly mouthwatering experience. That ought to be more than enough to get grandma and grandpa singin’ along, too. –R ANDY ROBINSON

Wana Brands also has a company Health and Wellness Committee to help find the right community outreach projects. The first initiative was a cleanup at the historic Columbia Cemetery in Boulder in September. “We don’t make a big deal about who we are,” says Whiteman. “But people get to talking when they work together, and we hope that it helps the broader community have a bigger picture of the industry and what we care about.” That’s one reason why you might have seen the CDOT Adopt a Highway signs supported by cannabis businesses on roadways around the state. Many industry organizations also sign up for the GREEN TEAM , founded by Denver Relief Consulting, which brings together businesses, organizations, and consumers in community volunteer projects. AJOYA recently started a campaign asking its dispensary
customers to “round up” to the next dollar. The proceeds go to the American Medical Refugees Foundation, which gives aid to the growing number of families who have relocated to Colorado in search of legal cannabis for their children or loved ones. “Cannabis is their last hope, and AMR is trying to connect them with medicine and gas and other needs, helping to create a sense of community for those people,” says Susanna Grossman, who works with Ajoya. The COLORADO CANNABIS COALITION FOR THE ARTS , which includes AJOYA , HELPING HANDS , and SWEET LEAF, held its second Wild ’n’ Free Gala and Art Auction in Boulder in October. The philanthropic event raised awareness for the Buffalo Field Campaign, an organization working to preserve the buffalo of Yellowstone National Park. “There was a need to engage the cannabis community in issues around ecology and create stronger connections with corporate social responsibility in their practices and businesses,” explains Grossman, who says future events planned around other issues are in the works. “It answers a need that cannabis companies have: finding causes that will accept their money and support,” she explains. “Some refuse to accept support.” Others, including organizations that receive government funding, aren’t able to accept donations from an industry that’s still federally illegal. Amendment 64 gave a lot of leeway for local communities to enact their own ordinances that also can prevent the companies from getting involved. But that hasn’t hindered the industry’s overall commitment to give back. DECEMB E R 2016

C ASTLE OF ROCK Just a stone’s throw from Denver, the historic Old Stone Church Restaurant answers prayers for inspired dining options in Castle Rock. Resting 30 miles south of Denver in East Plum Creek Valley sits the charming, historic town of Castle Rock. Surrounded by eye-catching rocky buttes, the enclave draws its name from a signature rock formation that overlooks it. The area was settled in the late 1800s by prospectors searching for gold. They instead discovered rhyolite, a volcanic rock that has been used in construction since prehistoric times. The town was founded in 1874, and Castle Rock has been a hub for the nation’s rhyolite industry ever since.
Resting comfortably 30 miles south of Denver sits the quiet town of Castle Rock. Founded in 1874, settlers originally came to the area
searching for gold.
The stone is incorporated into the walls of many of the homes, offices, and buildings around town—including in one of its oldest structures, an old stone church on Third Street that houses the aptly named Old Stone Church Restaurant. Built in 1888, the structure originally housed the St. Francis of Assisi Church, which for a long time was the only church in town. In 1923, Father Walter Steidle, a stone mason by trade, added the church’s namesake rhyolite vestibule by hand. The St. Francis congregation ultimately outgrew the space and moved to a new location in the 1960s, leaving the building vacant until 1975, when the church was converted to a restaurant. In 1991, current owners Jeff and Jeryn Richard took the reins at Old Stone, and the high-end eatery has been one of the town’s mainstays ever since. Today, the recently renovated space preserves many of the church’s 18

classic fixtures: stained glass windows, plaster walls, and a choir loft remind diners of the building’s original higher purpose. Arguably the most coveted seat in the place, the confessional booth now houses an intimate table for two. Perhaps best of all, the Old Stone Church is one of those rare fine-dining establishments that’s also affordable. It’s known for lamb and seafood dishes, and the menu of “inspired American cuisine” also offers exotic shareables like the tuna wontons filled with avocado and wasabi cream. If you’d prefer something a little more down-home, try the green chili macn-cheese, a true taste of Colorado served in a setting like no other.

The actual flavor of these treats is beside the point. They taste to me like December in the early 1960s in the house where I grew up, and the aromas take the expressway to my brain’s pleasure centers. The only thing infusing these baked goods is a high concentration of butter and sugar. I love that happy-frantic energy of independent bakeries right before the holidays from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. My run gives me holiday carte blanche to drink coffee and eat pastries on the way to the next bakery. Nothing beats back the solstice darkness like a flaky chocolate croissant. Beat together sugar and butter until fluffy and then stir in egg and vanilla. {Note: European butter has a higher butterfat content. Yum!} Add flour and baking powder gradually and optional ingredients if desired. Dough will be dry but it will moisten as it chills. Divide dough into six roughly equal parts and chill for at least an hour in the refrigerator. Roll out dough pieces in a plastic freezer bag or use waxed paper. Roll it thin if you want crisper cookies and thicker for softer cookies. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Bake at 375 degrees on a nonstick cookie sheet for about 8 to 9 minutes {until slightly golden}. Makes about 36 cookies, depending on size. Frost and decorate as desired.

ST RAW BERRY PARK STE AMBOAT SPRINGS Consistently ranked one of the best hot springs resorts in the country, Strawberry Park isn’t just a warm pool of rejuvenating water. It’s practically its own self-contained community, with lodging that includes teepees, cabins, covered wagons, and even a stationary train caboose. This gorgeous resort resides deep in the Rocky Mountain forests, which gives it the feel of a sequestered, Edenic escape. 44200 COUNTY RD. #36 // STRAWBERRYHOTSPRINGS.COM

These hot springs are enclosed indoors, so when you step out of the water, you’ll remain warm and cozy. DE S E RT RE E F FLORENCE Desert Reef, which is located near the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, describes itself as an oasis in the Colorado desert. And this outdoor spring is located in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by only small hills and sand or snow as far as the eye can see. If you want the hot springs experience without all the frills, crowds, or even a roof, Desert Reef should be at the top of your list. It’s open in the winter, and nothing quite beats an outside hot springs experience while surrounded by fields of fluffy powder. 1194 COUNTY ROAD 110 // DESERTREEFHOTSPRING.COM

Ouray, however, hosts one of the largest concentrations of hot springs in the state, so there’s plenty of places to choose from. the chemistry of a successful grow is a careful balancing act. How can we juggle all those bottles and additives without overdoing it? The solution: Gentlemen Growing’s Solution 3. It’s an organic foliar spray designed to increase your yields, promote plant health, reduce stress, and control pest problems. Solution 3 is a nontoxic cannabis spray made with all-natural ingredients. “We harvest seeds and fruits from exotic plants in seven different regions of the world,” says Bill Monroe, the owner of Gentlemen Growing. The active components in Solution 3 come directly from nature’s versions of the superhero: extremophile plants. Extremophile plants belong to a class of incredibly hardy organisms. These organisms evolved to withstand extreme conditions—cold, heat, drought, and pest infestations—and their naturally developed defenses are traits that can be harnessed by commercial farmers and home gardeners alike.

averse and avoid new brands to prevent the pain of wasting money. Coupons reduce this fear and nudge curious prospects into becoming consumers. Using coupons as a business strategy today is an especially smart move given that everyone seems to be using them. While the stereotype of the elderly female coupon clipper still exists, research from NCH Marketing Services reveals that Americans of all ages are passionate about discounts. In fact, millennials, more than any other age group, claim to search for discounts before making a trip to the store. Chances are that you already have one or two default websites you use to find your deals. All of this raises the question: if you are a retailer, what are you waiting for? Coupons are a great deal on both sides of the register.

Why Packaging Matters by Rao Murukurthy of Denver Custom Packaging
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND PICTURE A PRODUCT YOU LOVE. THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT CAME TO YOUR MIND IS THE PACKAGING. IT’S WHAT HELPS A PRODUCT CATCH YOUR ATTENTION ON A CROWDED SHELF. FOR MANUFACTURERS, IT’S WHAT HELPS THEM COMMAND THE PRICE THE Y WANT. THINK ABOUT IT : THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A $20 LOTION AND A $200 VERSION IS, BY AND LARGE, THE PACKAGING. THE BIGGEST COMPANIES IN THE WORLD SPEND AN EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF TIME AND MONEY DEVELOPING PACKAGES THAT WILL HELP THEIR PRODUCTS STAND OUT AND THAT WILL ENHANCE THE E X P E R I E N C E O F P E O P L E W H O USE THEIR PRODUC T. T H E R E’S A R E AS O N WHY WE DON’T BUY MILK IN BAGS OR ICE CREAM IN TUBES —THOSE PACKAGING OPTIONS WOULD MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT AND LESS ENJOYABLE TO USE THE PRODUC TS INSIDE. For all the progress we’ve made in the cannabis industry, the product packaging is truly behind the curve. We all know about the regulations around child safety that cannabis product manufacturers must be mindful of, but that doesn’t change the fact that the majority of packaging in this industry is ill-suited for the products and consumers. I've interviewed several cannabis consumers about packaging design, and their feedback suggests that they want manufacturers to do better. Much better. “I can’t reach my fingers into the bottom of the pop-top canister, so I have to dump everything out to get to my weed.” “I hate that my keef clings to the side of containers.” “I can’t get into the products, and I’m buying them to help with my arthritis/pain.” “I hate that these containers aren’t sustainably produced and I can’t recycle them.” These were some of the top complaints. But a few people even mentioned how weird it is that cannabis products come in the same type of container that used to hold their beloved Pogs back in elementary school. I've asked branding professionals from other industries on their impressions of the state of cannabis packaging, and they were not impressed, to say the least. “It looks like the industry is stealing bottles from an automotive shop, and that isn’t helping to legitimize the products. It’s just so unconsidered,” said one who works in consumer products. “Everyone using the same packaging is absolutely ridiculous; it’s like they’re all fighting to be the generic cola instead of Coke,” said another who works in the food industry. With Colorado at the forefront of development in the cannabis industry, consumers here are no longer impressed just because they can legally buy products that will get them high. Their expectations are rapidly shifting, and they now expect beautiful products with high-quality ingredients and the same type of sophisticated, considered, sustainable packaging they would find in the grocery store or the beauty department. We are demanding more and the people who win our business will be the people who get that right.

Since these outdoor excursions tend to be far from any prying eyes, many of us don’t mind bending the rules. A quick toke on a nationally protected hiking trail never hurt anyone, right? Some, however, do care about the rules. Fortunately, for everyone, there are plenty of places in Colorado that are both outdoors and privately owned— and many of these private sites allow cannabis use. Here are some places to consider for your next getaway.

While staying here, F.O. Stanley, the namesake of the world famous Stanley Hotel, invented the steam-driven car and the first photographic dry plate process. Stanley, like many of Colorado’s early visitors, believed the thin, clean mountain air in Estes Park would treat his ailments. Considering he survived nearly three decades after receiving a tuberculosis diagnosis, there may have been some truth to that belief. Today, you can enjoy that same life-sustaining breeze in between puffs of your favorite flowers. Located in Big Thompson Canyon about four miles from the center of Estes Park, Rustic River offers seven all-season, pet-friendly cabins on 16 acres. The cabins, circa the 1940s, house between two and eight people and definitely instill that old-timey feel, but they come with all the modern comforts: queen-sized beds, WiFi, flat-screen TVs, full kitchens, and fireplaces for cozying up in the winter. Feel free to venture out to a wilderness rife with hiking trails, fishing spots, and non-cabin campsites. Cannbis use is allowed anywhere on the property outside of the cabins, and you’re allowed to vaporize indoors.
Wilderness Bud and Breakfast PAGOSA SPRINGS, COLORADO SOUTHWESTWILDERNESSEXPERIENCE.COM
What better way to pass the peace pipe than to share it with friends in a teepee? Pagosa Springs has a rich history of indigenous settlement, Spanish conquests, arena-style competitions between the Navajo warriors and their Caucasian liaisons, and gold. Legend has it that a French expedition in the 1790s stashed a massive cache of gold in them thar hills that’s worth millions, but no one’s ever found it. From May through September, Wilderness Bud and Breakfast re-creates the area’s historical settings through the teepees and tent sites dotted along the Rio Blanco River. The retreat hosts a daily 420 Happy Hour during which campers get to choose from a selection of buds and infused edibles. Cannabis is permitted inside of the teepees, but campers will have to leave their pets at home. 44

SKI R E S ORT S Almost half of Colorado is federal land. Most ski areas are parked on those very same federal lands, which means cannabis is technically a no-no on these slopes. Although I would never advise anyone to get elevated then fly down a crowded mountain trail at high speeds, there’s nothing that says you can’t responsibly elevate in the privacy of your own lodge. There’s a number of ski-in/ski-out properties around Breckenridge, Crested Butte, and other mountain towns that are 420-friendly, but you’ll need to find them on your own. And wouldn’t you know it, here’s a list of websites that can connect you to these cannabis-permissible lodges: BUDANDBREAKFAST.COM TRAVELTHC.COM COLORADOPOTGUIDE.COM/MARIJUANA-FRIENDLY-HOTELS

Blue Sky Mountain Ranch BLACK HAWK, COLORADO BLUESKYMOUNTAINRANCH.COM
Sometimes it’s nice to just escape without the rugged tussle of a DIY camping trip. Blue Sky Mountain Ranch is a private estate replete with several large bedrooms (including a master suite spanning two levels), a massive kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and multiple decks with breathtaking views— including a redwood sundeck with hammocks, chaise lounges, and a six-person hot tub. The estate is surrounded by 120 pristine acres of trails, forests, open space, and—for extra-responsible sportspersons—an outdoor shooting range. ATV tours, archery, and even wine tastings are available here. Blue Sky is basically a getaway spot that’s out in the middle of nowhere yet only 45-minutes from Boulder or Denver and about an hour or so from Colorado’s most pristine ski resorts. The nearby town of Black Hawk offers an entire strip of casinos for those who want to test their luck. However, most visitors never leave the property, because there’s more than enough to do on the site. Guests may vaporize anywhere indoors, and smoking is allowed on the decks, patios, trails, and campsites.

a bison hunting ground for the Ute and the Arapaho. Today, it’s best known for its goat farms. Many of the buildings standing today in Bellvue were some of the first built by settlers in our state. Chilling about an hour out from Fort Collins, CanyonSide in Bellvue has camping, kayaking, rafting, horseback riding, and fishing all along the Cache La Poudre River. If trout fishing is your particular forte, you should know there’s plenty here, since the Division of Wildlife runs a trout hatchery nearby. And best of all, cannabis is allowed anywhere within the campground’s boundaries. CanyonSide likes to keep things safe and comfortable, so they’re only open from May to September. It’s never too early to start planning your next summer adventure.

The most important first step is to get everyone, vets and guardians and the general public, to understand the difference between THC and CBD.
Most mainstream veterinarians argue for caution until more studies, research, and clinical trials are completed. Today, CBD is being championed by converted veterinarians, product manufacturers, and distributors, most of whom take a holistic approach to their patients’ welfare. Stephen Katz is a veterinarian and Republican New York State assemblyman representing the 94th District. He sees patients regularly, mostly dogs and cats but also horses and cattle, for ailments ranging from anxiety to uncontrollable itching and mobility issues associated with arthritis and hip dysplasia. Over the years, Katz developed various formulas for the treatment of his four-legged patients as he gained some notoriety. In 2012, the assemblyman voted against legalized marijuana in New York. Then on March 24, 2013, he was arrested with three grams of marijuana in his car. He was given a ticket, and, he says, had an epiphany that led him to rethink his

using it anyway. You can use it and not feel like you’re going to hurt anything,” Smolen says. Still, it’s important that people know what they’re getting. Which, until we have solid standards and regulations and more research, is an ongoing concern. Debbie Cokes is CEO of Olathe, Colorado-based RxCBD, a line of pet products for dogs, cats, horses, and rats. “Pet owners should know when they read a label what the concentration of CBD is,” she says. “Right now in the CBD arena, sometimes I can’t even tell what the

Many people who give their pets her products are facing challenges that haven’t been addressed by traditional medicines. Still, she takes a conservative approach when it comes to dosing recommendations. “We aren’t vets. We talk to vets and encourage them. We have drawn a line in the sand and recommend a moderate dosage. We won’t go past that.” Smolen agrees that standard dosage levels and regulations are necessary. As it is, he collaborates with other veterinarians using CBD. “It’s helped in develop-

Last month, the 5th annual Marijuana Business Journal Conference and Expo called some 10,000 cannabis professionals from around the country to Las Vegas. For three days, the biggest names in the industry joined budding entrepreneurs at the Rio Hotel & Casino, where they walked the expo floors, mingled at networkers, and got together to toast to the high life at some pretty festive events. Such as the Sensi party at Voodoo Lounge on Thursday, November 17, presented by Women Grow, Endoca, Neos, Cannabrand, and Mason Jar Event Group, all to honor the good work of Students for a Sensible Drug Policy. And boy did the good times roll, thanks in large part to Public Enemy’s DJ Lord, who provided the musical entertainment. His killer mix got the crowd hopping on the roof deck dance floor, where the views were matched only by the festive atmosphere and stellar company.

CHOICE WORDS WITH
TOMMY CHONG by RANDY ROBINSON
Four decades ago,
Tommy Chong, as one-half of the archetypal comedic duo Cheech
and Chong, wrote, directed and starred in several films and recorded nine hit albums—all of which celebrated cannabis during the darkest hours of the plant’s prohibition. Now that states across the nation have seen the light, Chong has created his own line of cannabis products. Chong’s Choice launched in Colorado on November 9, 2016, a day when people everywhere were still trying to wrap their brains around a President-elect Trump being an actual thing. Chong, who had been vocally anti-Trump during the campaign, is an open-minded guy. While sitting in his Denver hotel room the night before, he came to a realization: our new president deserves a chance. Sensi Mag // You come to Colorado quite a bit these days. What’s your favorite place to visit here? Tommy Chong // Boulder. SM // Any specific part of Boulder? TC // Everything. The whole town. I just love it. My son lives there, too. SM // The last time a Republican was in the White House, his administration wasn’t terribly friendly to you. { Editor’s

note: In 2003, Chong was targeted, charged, and jailed for nine months for promoting and selling a line of glass bongs—not the stuff you smoke out of them, just the pipes themselves. The War on Drugs: your tax dollars hard at work, ladies and gentlemen.} How are you feeling about Trump’s victory?
TC // I’m feeling really, really good. Especially because the marijuana initiatives passed in all the states. That’s really the first step toward education. Because once you smoke pot, you can’t put that genie back in the bottle. Last night, I had quite an epiphany about the good part of the election: the fact that we elected a guy who’s totally his own boss. There’s no doubt about it, he doesn’t follow anybody. He’s a maverick, and I love that. I know everyone’s worried he’s going to appoint the wrong people. Don’t worry about Trump. { Another editor’s note: we were right to be worried.} He has a habit of doing his research, finding out what’s best for the world, what’s best for the country. He’s elected now, so he can use his power of intuition. Because that’s what he has. He has great intuition. That’s why I’ve got great confidence in Trump now, because I’m sure his intuition is going to carry us—and him—through. SM // Even in Colorado, pot is still stigmatized to a large degree. What do you think it’s going to take to get the rest of the country, and the rest of the world, to stop stigmatizing it? TC // Time. It just takes time. It took me about five minutes to realize this is what I want to smoke for the rest of my life. [laughs] It’s just time. There’s a lot of people who believe it’s against their religion, or it’s against their culture. It’s misinformation in their head. SM // Did you ever think, as you were making movies back in the 1970s and 1980s, that you’d one day have your own legal cannabis brand? TC // Never thought it. Wait! No, I take that back. In 1974, Cheech and I did a commercial. [Sings] Acapulco Gold: No stems, no seeds that we don’t need, Acapulco Gold is badass weed. {Last editor’s note: Forget Acapulco Gold, you can now get Chong’s Choice badass flower, edibles, and pre-rolls at select dispensaries throughout Colorado.
