NOTE
THE SAYING IS, “APRIL SHOWERS BRINGS MAY FLOWERS,” AND SENSI LAS VEGAS BLOOMS.
The upscale lifestyle of Las Vegas with the new normal of cannabis continues to grow as colors envelop the terrain and summer is almost here with those triple digit temps. But it remains a balmy 80 degrees and the perfect time for a staycation or a getaway. The economy of Southern Nevada is built on the tourism and hospitality industry with an estimated 39 million visitors in 2017 (reported by the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority). With the legalization of adult-use recreational cannabis along with medical applications, the ramifications are enormous. Changes will be occurring in Nevada as tourists visiting from states (and even countries) with restrictive cannabis laws need to be educated on local regulations. Sensi is a big part of helping readers navigate the terrain to enjoy responsibly, feel better, and heal while still following current laws. Sensi will continue to profile those who are part of the cannabis industry as well as monitor changes politically and socially. Andrew Jolley, the president of the Nevada Dispensary Association and native Las Vegan, has been active in the cannabis industry since 2013. He is one of the most influential people with a passion for personal freedoms and helping others. But while so many people visit Las Vegas, locals yearn to travel as well. Play tourist with visiting family and friends or actually take that well-deserved vacation. There are tours both in the city as well as in distant lands that give a new perspective to the world around us. Another loved activity is golf, although many would debate its transformation from the game of the past. Take in a concert, savor a cup of tea (high tea will never be the same), and celebrate all that is Las Vegas. While embracing a pro-cannabis stance, Sensi is part of the mainstream and reaches out to those who are

“CELEBRATE” ON THE BEACH DIRTY HEADS tour makes a STOP in Las Vegas. You know what’s better than seeing your favorite band play live? Seeing them play live while you splash in the water at a beach in the Nevada desert. This June 29, Dirty Heads, the Southern California rock/reggae/pop/alt/rock band that’s on everyone’s mind thanks to their earworm track “Celebrate” that’s been holding court in the Top 20 since its release in October, is bringing its headlining tour to Las Vegas and taking the Beach Stage at Mandalay Bay Resort. The show takes place on a stage above the 1.6 million gallon wave pool. Bring a blanket and sit on the beach or wade in and splash around. The beachy setting is a perfect fit for Dirty Heads’ smooth, warm weather anthem vibe—especially given that the band’s latest album is titled SWIM TEAM. Released in October 2017 by Five Seven Music, SWIM TEAM
Miriam Novalle, once dubbed the Tea Guru by the New York Times thanks to her self-taught ability to create superb blends of gourmet teas sold under her T Salon brand, was in Las Vegas last month to speak at the annual Nightclub & Bar Expo about beverage trends. At the event, she introduced High Tea, her new line of beverages infused with hemp CBD. Her vision for the blends came from watching her sister struggle through rigorous treatment for ovarian cancer. Wanting to ease her sister’s suffering, she researched and learned of the wellness-enhancing properties of CBD, which she began infusing with organic, sustainable tea blends.
pushes the band into a more mainstream sound than previous albums, evidenced no where more than the “Celebrate” track, which People magazine described as a “celebration of life” when debuting the video—which includes a cameo of Dennis Haskins reprising his role as Mr. Belding from Saved by the Bell. You’ll want to YouTube that track if you haven’t seen it yet. Pure gold. Tickets are general admission and start at $39.17. The band partnered with PLUS1 for the tour and is donating $1 from every ticket sold to Natural Resources Defense Council. To get yours, hit up TICKETMASTER.COM . 6 Las Vegas MAY 2018
High Tea is available in four flavors as bottled iced teas and loose-leaf tea bags. The High Tea bottles contain cold-brewed tea made from gourmet blends of tea leaves that have been steeped in filtered water for an extended period. Each bottle is then infused with 15 ml of CBD derived from the hemp plant, which by definition contains less than 0.3 percent THC, so there’s no chance of that telltale cannabis “high.” The CBD-infusion can be highly beneficial to one’s wellness, however, so visit HIGHTEA.TODAY to learn more and purchase.

Securing the safety of families or businesses, Monica Pappas, CEO of Fingerprinting Express, continues as a role model in Southern Nevada. After taking over the business from her mother in 2012, Pappas began to implement institutionalizing process, procedures, branding, digital marketing, and advertising campaigns, which doubled revenues. Fingerprinting Express has five corporate-owned locations statewide and franchised the Nevada-based business in 2014. Awarded the National Women’s Business Enterprise Certification, she also founded the National Association of Certified Fingerprint Technicians in addition to forming a fingerprinting trade association. The company offers fingerprint background checks and Live Scan fingerprinting technology, widely considered the most accurate form of background checks available.
Pappas also started Community Lifters to encourage volunteerism and make it easy for busy parents and professionals to volunteer in their community with easy-to-attend events assisting local nonprofits. Since its inception, Community Lifters have contributed over 1,000 hours of volunteer work at various Las Vegas charities who provide a hand up to at-risk populations, like Las Vegas Rescue Mission and Three Square. In 2018, the group has a goal of completing 3,000 hours of combined volunteer work in Southern Nevada. Fingerprinting Express also discounted over $40,000 in fingerprinting fees in 2017 for active military, teachers, volunteers, and nonprofit agencies. sensimag.com MAY 2018 7

Whether you’re new to the game or a long-time player, getting into golf can aid in personal and professional growth, provide health benefits, and even benefit the local community. The inaugural HeroGrown Foundation Spring Golf Classic taking place this month is a prime example. It's presented by the charitable arm of Nevada dispensary Exhale Brands, Exhale Gives Back. This includes fundraising, drug education awareness, youth program development, veterans outreach and assistance, and medical marijuana education, research, and assistance. du journey is certainly high altitude and meant for high-energy fitness. So is the Pacific Northwest trip that includes river rafting. The challenging level requires a traveler in excellent physical shape capable of hiking up to 10 miles a day over steep and rugged terrain. The Peru lodge-to-lodge trek to Machu Picchu is certainly challenging and thrilling to a seasoned outdoor enthusiast. Likewise, the roof of Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro journey is too. PERILLO TOURS (888-884-8259) offers tours for women in small groups ranging from 12 to 24 participants. Age groups range from under 50 to over 80. Of note is their Yoga, Health, Wellness: Eat, Pray Love travel series. Among those, Costa Rica Zen and Greek Goddess in Crete are most popular. If you’re more interested in traveling alone, a cruise is a good option. Some cruise ships have added, or been remodeled to provide single staterooms and solo passenger lounges. Among them, NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINES (800-962-5120) has some single cabins, perfect for the lone traveler. Other cruise lines with double-occupancy cabins might charge a single supplement which can be anywhere from 10 to 100 percent since the cabin cost stays the same no matter how many are in it. Therefore, half-priced specials generally mean a lone traveler pays 100 percent of the cabin cost. In rare cases, the supplement might be waived on select sailings, usually at the beginning or end of a travel season. Always remember to at least try to negotiate a supplement discount. President Richard Nixon continued the ignorance with the passage of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. Jolley sees this as a skewed vision and is thrilled to be at the forefront to change the landscape. As for the terrain for legalized cannabis in Nevada as

demonstrated has contributed to this advancement. Personal liberties for people to express and enjoy themselves played into our cultural acceptance of cannabis and it has become normalized relatively quickly as compared to other states. I am happy to be able to observe this.” As for consumption lounges, while Jolley admits they are needed, especially in Nevada, he also appreciates that it is a complicated issue. He does not fault the legislators for taking a slow and methodical approach and believes consumption lounges will become a reality in Nevada. With Coffee Joint consumption lounge opening in Denver, Jolley will observe to see how it moves forward. He states that Nevada will need to create its own spin, especially for tourists to legally enjoy recreational cannabis. Jolley is married with four children, and his family is growing up. His oldest daughter is now a senior in high school. She is expressing an interest in studying neuroscience, a field that can intersect many industries. Ultimately, Jolley wants to be one of the people who help to make cannabis the new normal in Nevada.

THE AIRPORT IN MONTEGO BAY AND CHECKING INTO MY ROOM AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, THEY ASSURED ME, A DRIVER OR BELLMAN WOULD ASK IF I HAD EVERYTHING I NEEDED FOR MY PARTY, AND THAT’S HOW I COULD PROCURE SOME GANJA. (IT’S NOT LIKE CANNABIS WAS A HUGE NOVELTY FOR ME, COMING FROM COLORADO, BUT THERE’S SOMETHING SUPER ENTICING ABOUT GETTING A TASTE OF THE PLANT THE ISLAND IS FAMOUS FOR ON THE ISLAND IT’S FAMOUS FOR.) fresh papaya every morning while looking out at turquoise Caribbean water provided plenty of elevation for mind, body, and soul. I went home refreshed and cleansed, and joked with my friends about my tolerance break in Jamaica. In 2015, the Jamaican government decriminalized cannabis, legalized medical marijuana, and made it legal for Jamaicans to grow five plants per household. Qualified medical marijuana patients from anywhere in the world can buy and use cannabis in Jamaica, and possession of less than two ounces will get tourists and locals a ticket instead of a jail sentence and a criminal record. Jamaica is creating a global hub for medical cannabis and research, and cannabis-centered health and wellness tourism is a key spoke, one that Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett called “a very important part of the economic future of Jamaica.” The government is eager to grab its rightful share of the $494 billion cannabis tourism market, and tourism officials think they can capitalize on a “vibe and culture” that places like Colorado can’t offer.

That sounds like a party. I went back to Jamaica late last year, on my own, pretty sure I’d find everything I needed.
A COUN T Y FAIR, WITH RASTAS AND ITAL FOOD In Negril, there’s a giddiness. Everyone from cab drivers to business owners to growers talks about what a difference decriminalization has made for them. It’s a huge deal, especially for locals who can no longer lose the right to ever leave the island again over a possession charge. No more roadside extortion. No more crop eradication. For expats, no more threat of deportation because of a spliff.

Ganja isn’t technically legal, but plenty of enterprising people are getting away with treating it that way. a few gray areas in the legal and regulatory structure remain. The nascent Jamaican cannabis industry feels like the wild Wild West, a lot like Colorado and California in the early days. People are building businesses first and asking permission second—largely because licensing fees are out of reach for small farmers and businesses—and no one seems too terribly concerned. “They want $2,500 American,” the Wake and Bake Café owner told me, and laughed, when I asked if she was planning to go through the regulatory process. “Do you know how many brownies I would have to sell to make that?” I found the same attitude among the cheerful people

A government-sanctioned event where everyone has a pass to freely consume cannabis in public (which is, believe it or not, still illegal), Rootzfest had a reassuringly homespun feel to it, like a county fair with Rastas and Ital food. Ital food is another cultural gem that falls squarely into the health and wellness zeitgeist Jamaica’s looking to represent—one I never learned about during my press tour in 2011. Based on their spiritual belief that the body is a temple and must be kept clean and pure, Rastafarians have been eating seasonally and locally as a matter of principle and wisdom for decades, long before Michael Pollan told his disciples to eat real food. The Ital (based on the word vital) diet excludes salt, meat, dairy, eggs, preservatives, colorings, flavorings, and anything artificial, opting instead for fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs—including ganja, a holy herb considered key to understanding the self, the universe, and God. At Rootzfest, I went full joy on the Ital food, washing downing a plate of curried vegetable chunks with car-
holistic arts and have the opportunity to experience various forms of organically grown cannabis with responsible guided dosing. Week-long stays include classes, body therapeutics sessions, tours of cannabis grow facilities, access to cannabis medicine, and nutritious meals.
Doc’s Place International (DOCSPLACEINTERNATIONAL.COM), a health and wellness resort, has partnered with Apollon Formularies Jamaica, which specializes in medical cannabis-based pharmaceuticals, to establish the world’s first Global Center of Excellence for Medical Cannabis Therapy in Negril. It’s been a mere two years since the law changed, and
down in Jamaica’s history. “That’s not going to happen this time,” the speaker said of cannabis. “We’re smart enough now to prevent that exploitation.” This party just got started. Jamaica, I’ll be back. sensimag.com MAY 2018 43

FEET NATIVE DANCE
WELCOMES ALL TO LAS VEGAS The iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign may greet road warriors but Native Dance inspires passengers arriving or departing on private flights. Using rings to show upward and downward movement, the piece is permanently installed at the corner of Koval Lane and Reno Avenue west of the executive terminal at McCarran International Airport. Artist Chris O’Rouke created the 10-foot-tall sculpture using mild steel with an aged finish, drawing inspiration from an unlikely source: the motion of piercings hanging from body parts. O’Rouke expresses his art in many forms of metal with pieces that are non-representational and without definition. Ultimately, its subjective interpretation is perceived by the viewer demonstrating the diverse experience of Las Vegas.
