Home of the Glass Bottle King

Some say this early 20th-century Vermont Beaux-Arts mansion is haunted.

In 1915, wealthy Ohio businessman Edward Hamlin Everett, owner of The American Bottle Company, precursor to Owens Corning, built the Everett Mansion in Bennington, Vermont. Everett’s former 500-acre estate served as the campus of Southern Vermont College from 1974 until 2019, when the college closed.

Not long after construction on the house was complete, Everett’s wife, Amy, died under mysterious circumstances. Her obituary states that she died following a long illness, but many people at the time, including her three daughters, believed she was murdered. Reports of strange phenomena began almost as soon as the college purchased the estate, the most frequent of which was the appearance of a woman in white roaming the mansion and grounds.

Today a popular wedding venue, the Everett Mansion is thought to be the inspiration for Vermont gothic novelist Shirley Jackson’s 1959 classic, The Haunting of Hill House.
