We’re really pleased to welcome you to our 9th edition of Sensoria. Please join us for an 8-day array of amazing experiences on the theme of MOVEMENT— from the mad dash of the 3 Ring Circus which will see Richard Hawley, John Grant and Bill Ryder-Jones each perform in 3 intimate venues, through to Tropicália, a documentary exploring the Brazilian counter-culture movement. We have a celebration of the 1996 TV serial Our Friends In The North plus a panel discussion (with Christopher Eccleston, Peter Flannery & Ian Neil) including looking at the ‘left’ and the labour movement as depicted then and now. Previews and premieres include Don’t Blink about the renowned and inimitable photographer Robert Frank plus we’re delighted to welcome back Bill Drummond with a ‘performance’ following his recently released film. SynthFest UK allows pros and hobbyists alike to find out about the latest offers in electronic music. SensoriaPro explores the changing landscape for musicians and artists from audio in VR to live music and touring. Plus, in November, there’ll be a Hip Hop pop up cinema called Breaking Beats and Street Eats, part of the BFI Blockbuster BLACK STARS season. Our films will feature rappers-turned-actors. There’s simply not enough room here to mention all our highlights so have a good old browse and keep checking the website too.

welcome to sensoria 2016 @SensoriaFest #SensoriaFest SensoriaFestival sensoria.org.uk We can hardly believe it’s been so many years already and really hope that you enjoy our eclectic mix of music, screenings, talks and installations―please also keep looking out for our plans for the 10th edition next year―it will be our biggest ever party. Last but by no means least we offer our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make Sensoria happen this year; our sponsors and funders, staff and volunteers, board and advisory, artists and venues, co-promoters and suppliers, friends and family. The festival wouldn’t exist without such amazing support.

This seminal TV serial charted the course of the lives of four friends from Newcastle from 1964 to 1995, each decade with its own soundtrack. Throughout the nine episodes, the personal lives of the characters become intertwined with the political struggles in their home town of Newcastle― and London. A backdrop of issues explored includes affordable housing, political and police corruption, the rise of Thatcherism and the Miners’ Strike. The Guardian rated it the third greatest television drama of all time and it also helped launch the acting careers of now-major figures in the industry including Daniel Craig, Gina McKee, Mark Strong and Christopher Eccleston. This well-crafted and brilliantly acted drama feels as relevant and poignant today as two decades ago.

3 amazing artists play 3 shows. All on the same night.

Each artist acts as opener in a different venue, plays a 40 minute stripped down set then jumps into a waiting car which will speed them to the next location. And the same again to the last venue. So each artist becomes the opener, middle act and headline―and they say democracy doesn’t work! And the audience sits still, maybe has another pint, has a chat in between whilst the artists break all speed restrictions in order to get to the next show. The only catch is no one knows what order the artists will appear at which venue. So it’s pot luck. But the important thing is you get to see:

Richard Hawley, John Grant and Bill Ryder-Jones all on the same bill in the most intimate surroundings.
