Cherry Creek School District - Forward Spring 2022

Page 1

As superintendent, and as an educator who’s been a part of Cherry Creek Schools for more than a decade, my priority has always been creating a learning environment where kids have the chance to shine, both in and out of the classroom. Our district is a place where students can find their passion on the field, on the stage or in any one of the clubs and activities all of our schools offer.

That commitment hasn’t changed, even as the way operate has had to shift to meet an unmatched set of challenges over the past year. Since I started as superintendent, I’ve witnessed the strength, kindness and potential of the community in myriad ways. Over the past two years specifically, I’ve seen our district unite to overcome overwhelming challenges and find a new path forward.

That’s why I’m so hopeful about what the future holds for our students, our staff and our entire district. Though the past year has been one of challenges for all of us, our next steps will reconnect us with our legacy of excellence in new and exciting ways. Our core values are our compass on this journey; they steer all that we do for our students and our community.

Those five guiding values, formalized with input from our students, teachers, parents, stakeholders and community leaders,

are rooted in our dedication to excellence. We’re committed to our students’ whole well-being; we strive to build and foster relationships between students, teachers and staff; we prioritize equity in all district spaces; we value engagement as a way to foster curiosity and innovation; and we always stress a growth mindset in our approach to teaching and learning.

This past year has taught me a lot about the strength and perseverance of our community, and it’s critical that we tap into the core values listed above as we chart a path forward. It’s also crucial that we continue to provide our students every opportunity to find the activities that ignite their curiosity, interest and excellence. From my first day on the job as superintendent, my focus has been on making sure that we make a positive impact for every one of our students, every single day. That work includes offering a robust set of extra-curricular activities, as well as in-classroom excellence.

Cherry Creek Schools is full of good people at every level. From our amazing students to our dedicated educators to our committed staff and invested parents, we are forging a bright future together.

Positive days full of growth, learning and achievement are ahead of us. The future is bright in Cherry Creek Schools.

Equity has long been a focus in Cherry Creek Schools.

The district’s Department of Equity, Culture and Community Engagement formally debuted during the 2021-22 school year with a distinct set of goals at its heart: to support the academic success of all students, to foster a culture of equity and inclusion across CCSD and to engage with all segments of the community to produce positive outcomes for all students in the district. This work is tied closely to the district’s mission: to inspire every student to think, to learn, to achieve and to care. What’s more, the focus on equity is one of the core values that drives the work at all levels of CCSD.

While the formal department is new for the current school year, its work represents the continuation of an effort that started more than 30 years ago in Cherry Creek Schools. According to Michael Giles, Assistant Superintendent of Equity, Culture and Community Engagement, the department’s work is nothing new.

“That’s a part of our story that I’m really proud of. We’ve always had a focus on equity in the district. We’ve been the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, the Office of Equity and Excellence,” Giles said. “It wasn’t until last year that it was elevated to an entire department.”

That elevation, a result of work by Giles, CCSD Superintendent Christopher Smith, former Superintendent Dr. Scott Siegfried and a diverse set of collaborators, stakeholders and community members, has allowed the district’s equity work to grow and flourish in new ways. The depart-

ment’s work includes working directly with educators to help them see students for who they are, and to provide educational learning experiences that truly meet the standards of engagement and equity. The work includes building culturally responsive education in the district, pedagogy and learning that prioritizes equity in the way it engages and challenges students. The work means building a sense of cultural humility, a dynamic that creates spaces across CCSD’s 108 square miles for different cultures, backgrounds and viewpoints.

The department is also dedicated to engaging all segments of the district’s large community, Giles said.

“We’re doing extra work with our immigrant populations, looking into the local mosques and places of worship, the Anti-Defamation League, law enforcement and local youth organizations – going into places where we haven’t been before,” Giles said, adding that members of the department like Director C. Omar Montgomery have played a key role in creating a newly inclusive presence across CCSD. “We’re really trying to expand that reach.”

As much as the Department of Equity, Culture and Community Engagement has reached out to teachers, administrators and other community stakeholders, it hasn’t overlooked CCSD students. Giles said the department has been devoted to incorporating input from students at all levels and at all buildings. Gaining a sense of their everyday viewpoints, challenges and successes is a key fac-

tor in steering the newly launched department. That input includes direct communication with Student Advisory Councils from every district high school.

“We, as adults, smart as we believe we are, we don’t know what it’s like to walk this walk that they’re walking,” Giles said. “How are we giving students the opportunity to bring their voice to the table to share with us what it is they need to create the learning experiences that will help them thrive and be successful?”

Keeping that student-centered focus is part of the Cherry Creek School District’s core values; it’s part of keeping up the work to make sure that the definition of excellence never becomes static, outdated or exclusionary. The work of the Department of Equity, Culture and Community Engagement is all about the district staying true to its mission.

“The drive of this office is to support our district in meeting the needs of all students. We know that we have a vast diversity of students, whether that be in terms of race, gender, sexual identification, socio-economic status and so forth,” Giles said. “We’re working to create space for all of our students in their different diversities and experiences to exist in a safe manner, to feel seen and be heard.”

The Office of Equity, Culture, and Community Engagement consists of Executive Director La Toyua Tolbert; Directors Ron Garcia y Ortiz and Omar Montgomery; ECCE Partners Dr. Aspen Rendon, Jasper Armstrong and Lisa Drangsholt; and two assistants, Candice Hux and Amy Seibert.

Summer fun, summer learning

Learning doesn’t have to stop when summer starts! Keeping kids active and engaged during summer break helps slow the so-called “summer slide,” when students lose some of what they learned the previous year. The Cherry Creek School District offers a variety of fun and educational camps and activities during the summer months, as well as summer school for credit progression and credit recovery. See the descriptions below. More details and registration information will be available after spring break on the Cherry Creek Schools website at https://www.cherrycreekschools.org/Page/154.

ECS Summer Camps

CCSD’s Extended Child Services Summer Camps are a high-quality, affordable childcare option for students ages 5-11. Full day programs provide care from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students participate in enriching activities and field trips. The camps offer project-based learning experiences including creative expression, science, technology, art, indoor/outdoor recreational games along with lots of outdoor play. Summer camps will be held at locations across the district.

YMCA Power Scholars Pro-

gram (Elementary Summer Programming)

This FREE program offers current K-4 students (those who will be in first through fifth grade next year) a fun and engaging experience that helps them increase math and literacy skills, strengthen self-confidence and build a stronger connection with their school and the community. Morning and afternoon sessions will be offered at locations across the district.

Cherry Creek Innovation Campus summer courses

Incoming freshmen can delve into computer-aided design and sophomores, juniors and seniors can take courses in different career pathways at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, a stateof-the-art college and career preparation facility located at 8000 S. Chambers Road in Centennial.

CCSD Summer School –In-Person and Online options

Cherry Creek Schools is offering both In-person and Online Summer School options for students who need credit retrieval for a class they didn’t pass during the regular school year, as well as students seeking credit progression - taking a class during the summer so they don’t have to take it next year.

Learning Opportunities Abound for Students of All Ages

Tesoro’s onsite educational programs explore Colorado’s history during the first half of the 19th century. Handling historical objects, examining primary sources, touring Bent’s Fort’s first authentic adobe replica, or participating in inquiry-based learning activities, participants will be engaged in critical thinking and will be able to make connections between past, present, and future. Tesoro’s education programs align with Colorado Academic Standards.

Tesoro has 3 Onsite Programs or Traveling Trunk Shows that visit your site:

• Bent’s Fort: A Crossroad

• Colorado’s Early Spanish Settlers

• The American Indian Tribes of Colorado Reserve a program TODAY! Please contact us for pricing and availability.
