developed sustainable architectural design integrating inexpensive, local material Implementing traditional skills with contemporary aesthetics and modern methodologies

Topic Tropical Climate

A study of the façade design that affects the thermal comfort of Binh Thanh House

Façade Design

Research Question(s): How does the design of the façade enhance the thermal comfort of the building? How does the type of the façade material affect the thermal comfort of the building?

Thermal Comfort

What is the thermal comfort difference between utilizing ventilation blocks or pattern blocks and normal glazing on the façade of the building? How does the orientation and dimension of the façade affect the thermal comfort of the occupants in the building?

Material

Site Context Orientation

How do the elements of the site context affect the design of the façade in enhancing the thermal comfort of the building?

Binh Thanh House Residential building located at Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City Designed for 2 families a couple in their sixties, their son, his wife and a child

Saigon Zoo Provide greenery and peaceful scene to the building

Orientation, Spatial Arrangement

3 volumes are shifted back and forth to creates balconies and also bring in natural lightnings Faรงade becomes boundary Shading Device

Widely open to exterior, for occupants to enjoy natural elements such as wind, sunlight, green and water

Busy Streets

Peaceful Canal & Zoo

Internal spaces distanced from faรงade

Internal space close to facade Enhance evaporative cooling

Faรงade and balconies act as a sound buffer

Addition aestheticness to the greenery view

Prevent sound pollution

Enhance sunlight penetrates into the long volume interior

Material Concrete

Low cost Local material High U-value (Low heat energy transmission) Able to withstand harsh weather

Cross Ventilation

Prevailing wind from south west

Curvy Form Ceiling Reused bamboo

Allow flow of air and wind Able to create different luminance level in the space Visual and thermal comfort

Minimal Sunlight Exposure

Allows optimum sunlight exposure to the interior Form shadows and shadings that enhance the user experience in the space Create the feeling of coziness

Conclusion The used of ventilation block in buildings does not only has the purpose of enhancing ventilation, but it also form an aesthetic appearance to the faรงade and protect the users from harsh weather such as heavy rain and strong wind and sunlight exposure. Therefore, with the use of concrete ventilation blocks, thermal comfort can be enhanced.
