Septic tank pumping is the process of pumping out the solid waste from a septic tank into a tanker truck which will then disperse the septic sludge elsewhere where it can be successfully processed so it will not be harmful to the environment.

Septic tanks are used to collect waste from homes and business where there are no city sewage facilities. All of the waste from a home or business is then cycled to the septic tank where the solid materials sink to the bottom, the oils and waxes float on top, and the liquid is in the middle, and is gradually sent out into a settlement field that is spread out over a widespread piece of land. The effluent, as this liquid is called, then filters down into the water table, the ground purifying it as it goes.

From the septic tank there runs a system of hollow pvc pipes with holes in them where the effluent runs out of the tank into the drainage field. The solids, grease, and oils can become part of the solids, if the tank builds up those materials too high in the tank. This can cause the draining pipes to become clogged, and can then become quite expensive to repair.

The strategy is to initiate a septic tank pumping process on a periodic basis before the tank fills up too much. It is a good idea to have a professional company inspect the tank on a regular basis to check the tank levels in order to determine the level of the solids in the tank. If the tank reaches a certain level, then it should be pumped.

If the drain field pipes become too clogged and too impacted with the solids materials, oils, and so forth, it can become impossible to clean them out, so they would have to be replaced. This would involve excavation and expensive removal of the pipes and installing new ones.

All of this can be prevented by simply maintaining the septic tank on a regular basis and checking on the levels in the tank. A septic system works primarily on its own without too much prompting, and yet many people think that they can just let it go, and that is when they run into problems.

Periodic pumping of the tank, say on an annual basis is not a bad idea, just to be on the safe side of things. It is a lot less costly to have a periodic pumping than to have to repair a drain field.
