HEALTHY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE (HSI)
Dear Healthy Schools Initiative (HSI) community,
This school year, Sequoia Healthcare District's Healthy Schools Initiative (HSI) provided much needed funding and support for our frontline Covid response teams Wellness leads and school nurses from our eight school districts convened on a regular basis to discuss strategies and share information about fighting the ongoing pandemic Without the leadership of these individuals, it would have been difficult for our schools to re open for in person learning Health and safety comes first, and setting this foundation was essential before classrooms opened
In addition, in 2021 22, through the HSI grants program, over half a million dollars ($539,000) were allocated to 22 non profit organizations that work with our school districts Over the past 12 years, SHD has served as a leader in convening partners and providing a network of community supports and resources for students, families, and school staff Please visit seqhd org/hsi to learn more about our Healthy Schools Initiative
Karen E. Li, MD Director of School Health Healthy Schools Initiative
We would like to give a special thanks and recognition to Dr. Karen Li, MD, who recently retired from her position as the District's Director of School Health Since 2018, Dr Li's leadership was instrumental in coordinating school health efforts, especially during the pandemic Her leadership served as a catalyst for the school nurse mentor program and cultivated key community partnerships centered around mental health (CareSolace, Parent Green Folder) and prevention efforts (Tobacco Education Coalition) Thank you for your years of excellent service to our team

THE BELMONT WATER DOG RUN
The Belmont Water Dog Run is an annual community event that takes place in the fall The Water Dog Run has everything from 1K, 5K and 10K runs, to family and fido runs With the theme of “Have Fun Build Community Do Good ” the Water Dog Run is always a popular event!
Being a wellness focused school district, Belmont Redwood Shores offered grants to employees who wanted to participate in the event Besides encouraging employees to participate, BRSSD had a booth set up with the ever popular blender bike. People were able to refuel after their race by using the blender bike to make smoothies.
Lesly is a Bay Area native and has lived here her entire life, including spending her college years attending the University of San Francisco for her undergraduate degree During the pandemic, Lesly s nursing career shifted from ambulatory care to school nursing as she realized the importance of keeping children healthy first and foremost in order for them to learn She loves to make a positive impact and contribute to children's education (although not directly ) In her leisure time, she enjoys snowboarding, playing badminton, and jetskiing
BRSSD DISTRICT NURSELESLY LOUIE
Our Healthy Schools Initiative Grant funds make it possible for BRSSD to have a registered nurse on staff In an time when there is a shortage of healthcare professionals, we are fortunate to have Lesly Louie as our District Nurse School nursing is a specialized field within nursing and requires a nurse to specifically address the health needs of students while following Calirfornia Education Code.
Lesly stays busy managing the health needs of 4000 students and working with our 7 schools to ensure that proper protocols and procedures are followed when students visit the Health Office

IT’S A NEW YEAR
The start of a new year has been exciting for everyone It seems like the craziness of the last 2 years might just be behind us This is not to say that we don’t have typical school chaos. Ironically, this is refreshing.
Last spring, the MPCSD applied for and was awarded a Pivotal Practice Award from the California Department of Education. This award was an exercise in looking back at what the district was doing when schools were shut down that supported the Social Emotional Well Being of Students In the moment, it did not feel like we were being successful but as we looked back, we could see that we were intentionally implementing strategies to ensure relationships continued within the entire school community This award is a direct reflection of the advanced thinking and intentional tools that our entire school community did to support each other The administration, teachers, counselors, staff, students, parents, and community pivoted with more ease and success because each of them had a strong foundation upon which innovation and outside the box thinking could be developed
A LITTLE PAWZ-ITIVITY!
Over the last couple of years, the Menlo Park City School District has been exploring different ways of having Therapy Dogs at school to support the emotional needs of everyone Guided by research, here is what we know about having a facility dog on campus:
Increased school attendance
Positive changes leading to better learning and enhanced motivation Helps reduce stress and anxiety in both students and adults
Growth in confidence levels Development of better and stronger relationships with teachers and peers due to the experience of trust and love with therapy dogs.
Children learn ways to express their feelings and develop more trusting relationships
Helps students and adults after traumatic events and provide comfort
Reduced learner anxiety behaviors, causing improvement in learning outcomes like improved reading and writing skills and levels

EMOTIONS MATTER
MPCSD continues to roll out our social emotional learning tool RULER The RULER approach starts with recognizing and understanding that Emotions Matter and how emotions impact everything we do All of us know about emotions but do we really know how they work? Do we put what we learn into practice? Are we taking care of ourselves? RULER believes that when the adults understand that emotions matter and that they are key in supporting a child’s social and emotional learning, they use their own social and emotional skills to create and set an emotionally supportive tone for learning. They are more attuned to children’s emotional needs, and they are better equipped to guide children through transitions and manage the classroom because they are responsive and sensitive to children’s emotions

STAFF HEALTH AND WELLNESS CHALLENGE
After learning about this from Kristen Savilla from Belmont Redwood Shores, San Carlos School District launched a staff health and wellness challenge! 60 staff members are on school based teams for a 6 week “challenge” to build, develop, and re explore healthy habits. We know that once the school year starts, teachers and school staff can become burnt out, drained, and stop caring for themselves. This will hopefully support our colleagues in developing skills to incorporate into their daily routines to ensure they are self nourishing all year long This challenge will explore sleep, water intake, movement, adding in more fruits and veggies, mindfulness, and more!
NEW CURRICULUM
After almost a year of getting acquainted with the District, the students, the families, staff, and all the various needs, we developed and launched some new tailor made curriculums to best support our community. 1. 2. 3
We developed a comprehensive health education, Social Emotional Learning, Diversity, and community building curriculum for our K 3 small groups time with our lovely partner, Legarza. This ensures that we are expanding the offerings for our young folks to focus on the Whole Child.
We created a curriculum for middle school advisory, based on needs identified in the California Healthy Kids Survey data results. This curriculum allows students to learn about all realms of health and wellbeing, equity, mental health, SEL, and focus on creating cohesion amongst the students We are so excited to continue to track progress of this curriculum, to see how we can make it even better for next year!
Each of our schools have “Green Teams”, to focus on sustainability and Mother Nature We developed a template for all of these teams to follow to ensure consistency amongst our schools, while allowing for student voice and choice Students will be able to do school sustainability audits, teach their peers about proper waste sorting, create campaigns, and more We can’t wait to see how the students will positively change the world this year!

SUHSD DIGITAL WELL BEING TAS
JACK WEST
In 2018, after completing a year long process of information gathering from over 62 contributing stakeholders, SUHSD completed a revised technology plan
Chief among the top three technology related needs identified by all corners of our community was a concern over screen time
This gave birth to the digital wellbeing task force, a collaboration of school leaders, teachers, and community members from five school districts in southern San Mateo County The focus of the task force are the following:
1 Integrate digital citizenship curriculum into our schools, K 12, in an interdistrict collaboration
2 Examine research and best practice narratives around technology use agreements and share what we learn with our decision making partners
3 Inform our parent community about best practices for digital device use with children and teens so that we can speak with one voice from school and at home.
The work of the digital wellbeing task force would not have been possible without the leadership of the Sequoia Union High School District, the financial and professional health knowledge support of Kaiser Permanente, the specific field expertise and collaboration of Common Sense Education, the parent community connection and platform provided by the The Parent Venture, and the continued commitment of our many task force volunteers.
