SUMMER BALL EXCLUSIVE!

H

ere is the official line-up for this year’s summer ball. Indie rockers Athelete are headlining, with main support coming from The Cuban Brothers. Some of you may be wondering at this point, who the The Cuban Brothers are. Well, their performance combines Latino inspired music, dancing and riotous comedy, (which, according to their Myspace, is “both physical and observational”). Reviewers say the energy at every show is incredible, which is good news for all the ball goers! Also on the line up is Cantaloop, a band who describe themselves as “super heavy funk”. Combining influences from across the spectrum of R&B, Hip Hop and Soul, Cantaloop is soon release a third album which they are currently finishing with producer Gavin Monaghan (The Editors, Nizlopi). They played at various festivals last year, including Glastonbury and have toured extensively around the UK and Europe. As well as tribute acts to The Beatles and Amy Winehouse, the line-up also

includes local band Filth Machine, who recently played at Seren’s very own sin night. If you haven’t seen them, they are a band with loads of energy and musical talent. Their varied influences span from Pendulum to Rage Against The Machine and even Morrissey. Loads of other acts are also on the bill, so get on Myspace and check them all out! Having only one ball a year here at Bangor, means that everyone is waiting with baited breath for this year’s event. It’s the night when everything is scrubbed up to its best sheen, from Main Arts to the scruffy bloke that sits at the back of your lectures. Fairground rides will be brought in, casino tables set up, marquees erected and Bangor will be a hub of excitement brought on by the end of exams and the beginning of summer. So buy that dress or rent that tux and get ready for the event of the year in Bangor. It’s both a great way to see all your friends dressed up and a splendid opportunity to say goodbye to all those third years. Tickets went on sale on Thursday 1st May, when nearly two hundred

were sold. The ball almost reached capacity last year, with 1,922 tickets purchased, and looks set to be equally popular this year. The organisers are sticking to the policy of not having drinks vouchers again, which means you don’t have to shell out all that cash in advance. Just don’t forget your wallet on the big night! Tickets for the Summer Ball 2008, which include a champagne reception, are now on sale (priced £45) in Academi, weekdays 12pm-5pm. In the coming weeks, handbooks detailing all the events, bands and frivolity will be available, so look out for them. The big question is where to have breakfast at 3 am: Mike’s Bites and Varsity are generally the favoured hotspots, though if previous years are anything to go by, they get pretty packed.
