The representation of the structual system takes an inverted approach of Ito’s Tama Library, which arch system is derived from the form of forest.
program diagram
The structural system of this project is a combination of load bearing columns (at intersections of grid lines), post-tensioned shear columns (thinnest), and shear glass curtain walls (the bubbles). The systems made possible the weightless look of a curvy roof floating on a forest of thin columns. structural diagram

Four climatic zones with distinctive HVAC systems (swiming pool, gym, change rooms and assembly area) are seperated by the strip of change room in the middle and the climatic glass buffering surrouds the programs, creating a gradient of temperature and moisture differences. Buffering pockets between two layers of glass curtain walls (single glazing on the exterior and triple glazing on the interior) at neccessary locations of the exterior facade improves the natural heating and cooling exchange.

This project considers zoning contemporary cities in a de-constructed way. Different from traditional zoning methods of categorizing blocks of properties into single usages, this method takes the aggregated zoning mass of the planning area and deconstruct them into individual zoning points gathered around points of influences to create a mixed use community that fits the constantly changing needs of urban gentrification. With enough data, the deconstruction can happen on levels as large as urban planning or as specific as roomsized planning, taking the concept of mixed-used into daily lives. The project in specific deals with the revitalization of one of Toronto’s oldest industrial neighborhood, the Golden Mile. Four actors considered in the design includes: Metrolinx’s new Eglington LRT, Gatineau Hydro Corridor, Cennential College and TRAC subsidized housing.

void reduction
This project creates a hidden chapel between the gap of two modern buildings. Spatially, a vertical void is generated from the intersection of the two elliptical pathways, which penetrates the host geometry and activates the poche space above and below, with a spiral stairs loops in and out of the circulation core. The perception of devine and humanity is blurred by the play of light and shadow.

Bleached, 2019
Inspired by the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial in 2019, Nature: collaborations in design, this project honours nature’s own rhythms and processes in the creation of artificial objects, which stands in opposition to the perfection and regimentation necessitated by industrial production. The participation of nature in design marks a transformation in designer’s role, from deciding to guiding, accepting inconsistency and imperfection in the outcome, and embraces biological growth as a fabrication platform.

I saw a light spot floating afar. So mellow yet so bright, like a morning star in the sky. “I want to have a friend.” “Shall we go live with someone?” I whispered to my mangrove. Looking down to their roots, they are pale, shaky. They’re not well, too weak to hold another hand. “I’m sorry my friend. Looks like It’s not happening.” I’m sorry. Maybe not today. I had to let the light drift away, slowly disappearing in the swamp land. Leaving the two of us all alone in the darkness. Nothing we could do. “We might actually get along, you know?” “We might start a family.” Silence.
This is a story about a man and a tree in a capsule. One man and one mangrove, living in the post-catastrophe when all hierarchies are subverted. Humans no longer sits at the top of the pyramid, every species becomes co-depended for their own survival in the commune. With their fate unknown, the man must put all their efforts into the care-taking of the mangrove for their collaborative well-being. Only when the plant is strong enough, it would be able to hook to another unit with its root system. A new community/settlement will then be born.
59
60
The confinment of space creates an interesting dynamic in the co-dependent relationship; the human and the plant both depend on each other for their own wellbeing yet are in constant compete of space, light and other resources. The dynamic raises the question of what is the balance point of a postanthropocene senario.

T1- Pre-flooding Stadium converted to specialized factories to manufacture escape vessels. T2- Paludification Saltwater intrusion through river. Swamps form in the bay area. T3- Flooded Flushing Bay inland flooded. Vessels float and drift in water. Man and Mangrove: co-dependent relationship. T4- New Habitat Mangroves prosper; root systems hook Adjacent vessels joins; mangrove branches used as scaffolding of connecting pieces. Residential Vessels attached to Variety Vessels. T4 Onwards Communal spaces form. New community starts to form. Salt crystals grow along wood structure, reinforcing adhesions. Mangroves outgrow vessels. Vessels merged together.
