Welcome and Thank you! To all sponsors, donors, volunteers and attendees: Welcome to the Tri-North Builders, Inc. 30th Anniversary Gala! We are excited to have you join us as we reflect upon our work over the last thirty years and envision future directions. Since Joe, Donny and I founded the company in 1981, Tri-North Builders has been dedicated to building lasting relationships with clients, subcontractors, partners, charities and our community. We acknowledge that our success is largely due to the collaboration of many incredibly committed and talented individuals. From our earliest partnerships with stellar companies like The Marcus Corporation and Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, to our newer relationships with cutting-edge partners like Nova Retail Group and The Creative Company, to our enormously dedicated staff (many of whom have been with us for over two decades!), we have truly been blessed with an invaluable support network. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to Tri-North becoming The Green Building Leader. On this landmark occasion, I invite you to join us in celebration with tonight’s featured event – The MadTown Chef Showdown Competition. From 6-8PM tonight, please taste the imaginative appetizers created by five local chefs. Savor the Wisconsin-grown ingredients, and be sure to vote for your favorite! We gather tonight not only in celebration of Tri-North, but in support of four incredible non-profit organizations. It is with gratitude for their tireless efforts that we donate proceeds from this event to REAP Food Group, United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Dane County, Urban League of Greater Madison and Variety- The Children’s Charity of Wisconsin. I invite you to help us in our effort to support them by participating in our Silent Auction this evening from 6-9PM. Thank you for joining with us in celebrating this momentous occasion. We look forward to fostering new and continued collaborative partnerships with you in the future. Enjoy!

About the Event Chefs

Chef Dan Fox

www.madisonclub.org

Chef Fox got his start in culinary arts at the age of fifteen. After 3 1/2 semesters of traditional college courses, Chef Fox found that his passion was in culinary arts. He switched to Kendall College, a top-notch Culinary School in Chicago. His internship was spent at the world-class Everest Restaurant, also in Chicago, working under Chef Thierry Tristch, who Chef Fox considers to be his mentor. He then spent time training in Provence and Austria and naturally gravitates towards Northern French, German and Austrian cuisine. He’s also worked in an Asian inspired restaurant in Chicago, which brings some Asian influences to his culinary view as well. Chef Fox has spent the last 3 1/2 years at the Madison Club, bringing his globally inspired cuisine to the diners. He is passionate about local foods and building a farmer/chef connection. He feels that the Dane County Farmers’ Market is the best in the country, and he has a seat on the REAP board, an organization dedicated to local, sustainable food. This passion has caused Chef Fox to embark on a new, exciting project, and this spring he will be starting an acre plot of produce for the Madison Club at Fountain Prairie Farms. “We’ve designed down to every row exactly what will be grown,” said Chef Fox, “The produce will go to both the fine dining and banquet menus.” Chef Fox believes that the most essential ingredient in the kitchen is salt, and, when pressed he will admit to a dislike of deep-fried bar food done badly.

Chef Brian Hauke

www.merchantmadison.com

Chef Brian Hauke is a native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu program at Brown College. Upon completing his culinary externship with the Sun Valley Resort, Brian became a part of restaurant 20.21. by Wolfgang Puck in Minneapolis, where he appreciated the opportunity to work for Chef Lee Hefter. Later, while living in Charleston, SC, Brian worked beside Chef Craig Deihl of Cypress, and Donald Barickman of Magnolias. Brian returned to Minneapolis in November 2007 where he helped open The Red Stag Supperclub and progressed there as Executive Chef. Brian brings to Merchant an extensive knowledge of ‘head to tail’ philosophy, along with a strong interest in vegetarian cooking. He has enjoyed building relationships with local farmers and vendors in order to carry on the tradition of cooking local, sustainable Midwestern ingredients.

Chef Curtis Mitchell www.fitfreshcuisine.com Curtis Mitchell was born in Madison and spent his early years in the beautiful Driftless area of southwest Wisconsin. He began his culinary career at age 15 in Stevens Point, providing catering services for meetings, weddings, and banquets. Curtis received his professional training at Le Cordon Bleu in Minneapolis, followed by an internship at the Hotel Sofitel in Bloomington, Minnesota. After completing the culinary arts program at Le Cordon Bleu, Curtis returned to Madison and worked at The Icon and the Madison Club. He is currently employed at Fit Fresh Cuisine in Fitchburg, where he is Head Chef. He is also in charge of meal plans for the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. In his spare time, Curtis enjoys mountain biking and competing in long distance running competitions. He also enjoys disc golf, fishing and bow hunting.

About the Event Chefs

Chef Peter Robertson

www.rpspasta.com

While touring Europe as a stage carpenter for dance companies, Ecco La Pasta creator, Peter Robertson fell in love -- with the food of Italy. He began studying the traditional fresh pasta that was a staple of the Italian food he loved and ultimately, began making authentic fresh pasta on his own. Robertson later moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he opened RP’s Pasta Company in 1995. Today, RP’s Pasta is distributed to dozens of restaurants and grocery stores in the upper Midwest. Robertson, the former student of pasta making, developed Ecco La Pasta flours to make homemade fresh pasta and gnocchi easier for the home chef. Robertson continues to make fresh pasta, and he’s still in love.

Chef Francesco Mangano

www.osteriapapavero.com

Francesco Mangano got an early start as a chef. He was born in Bologna, Italy, and grew up in family of restaurateurs and cooks. His early years were spent helping his grandmother make pasta in her restaurant and learning the trade of his fisherman uncles on the Tuscan coast. Passionate and driven, Mangano continued on to receive a strong and diverse education. He holds a Culinary Arts Degree from MATC and a Master’s Degree in Food and Wine Tourism from University of Arezzo. He learned the art of cutting and curing meats through an internship with an Italian butcher in Lombardy, Italy. Mangano met his future wife during her exchange student term in Italy. They married and moved to her hometown of Madison to raise their children. Before opening Osteria Papvero in 2006, Mangano worked at several distinguished Madison restaurants, including Lombardino’s, Harvest and Cocoliquot. Much of the inspiration for the menu at Osteria Papavero comes from the Toscana and Emilia Romagna regions of Italy. Mangano’s focus is quality, authenticity and seasonality, with dishes that emphasize a simple, rustic and regional approach, highlighted by locally-produced ingredients. All cured meats are done in house, and all of the pasta is made from scratch—just like in his grandmother’s restaurant.

United Cerebral Palsy

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) is an international nonprofit organization with a network of over 100 affiliates. UCP is a leading service provider and advocate for adults and children with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury and delays in speech, mobility or development. As one of the largest health nonprofits in America, UCP’s core mission is to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities through an affiliate network that has helped millions. Through its affiliates, UCP provides numerous services and resources to children and adults with developmental disabilities, often focused on education, employment, health and wellness, housing, parenting and family training support, sports, and travel assistance. In addition to fundraising for research and services, UCP also engages in public policy advocacy promoting the voting rights of people with disabilities. One of Tri-North’s most significant charitable activities is their involvement with United Cerebral Palsy of Dane County. Participation in “UCP Days,” a month-long public awareness and 2004 Lunch Fundraiser

fundraising campaign held every year throughout the month of June, has become a regular institution with the staff. At Tri-North, the fundraiser has grown into an exciting team-building event that includes weekly donations, organized 2007 UCP T-Shirt outings and a silent auction. These activities and the passion of Tri-North’s staff for helping the community have helped make Tri-North one of UCP’s largest corporate donors year after year. In order 12

Joe Herr and Tom Thayer at Logan’s Memorial

to ensure that each year’s donation is greater than the last, Tri-North contributes extra funds on top of what is brought in through the annual fundraiser. In 2006, Tom Thayer, President and CEO of Tri-North, was awarded the Ethel Hausman National Volunteer of the Year Award for his extensive volunteer efforts with UCP. Tom’s introduction to the issues faced by families of children with disabilities began when Tri-North’s Senior Project Manager, Joe Herr, had a son diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Little Builders–Tri-North’s onsite daycare for employees–was already a forerunner in the community, but Tom was devoted to going a step further to meet young Logan’s needs. He hired an additional staff member who was involved with UCP in order to provide therapy and programming tailored to Logan’s needs. As Thayer continued to learn about the needs of children and adults with disabilities, his passion grew. He became more actively involved in UCP’s fundraising programs and joined the UCP Board of Directors. Tragically, Logan Herr passed away in early 2006. To commemorate his life, Tri-North more than doubled its contribution to United Cerebral Palsy and dedicated a memorial garden to Logan on the Tri-North property. It is a testament to the healing power of giving back to the community–a core value at Tri-North–that after the loss of his son, Joe Herr founded his own charitable organization, Logan’s Heart & Smiles. A tribute to the memory of his son, Herr’s foundation adapts the homes of children with physical disabilities to make them safe and accessible. 30 Years, Many Stories Gala Program

Tri-North is a major contributor to Logan’s Heart and Smiles, allowing Herr access to company equipment for larger projects. Proof that the incredible work of UCP is infectious, Herr, like Thayer and Tri-North as a whole, has spent countless hours volunteering for UCP. Through its network, volunteers and the foundations it has inspired, United Cerebral Palsy has helped millions of people achieve lives without limitations. Although living conditions are drastically better than the first half of the 20th century, work still remains in order to ensure fair and full citizenship for people with disabilities. UCP’s commitment to changing public policy and harnessing innovative, adaptive technologies helps bring life-changing services to children and adults every day. Special relationships: Tom Thayer, Tri-North Builders President & CEO, served as President of the Board of Directors. Jason Koziar, Tri-North Builders Project Manager, currently sits on the Board of Directors.

Variety - The Children’s Charity

Variety-The Children’s Charity is a billion dollar philanthropic organization with locations throughout the United States. On Christmas Eve 1928, John H. Harris, Manager of the Sheridan Square Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA, discovered an abandoned one-month-old baby girl on one of the theatre seats. Her heartbroken mother had pinned a note to her dress explaining that she could not financially take care of little Catherine, as she had eight other children and no income. The note read, “I have always heard of the goodness of show business and I pray to God you will look out for her.” The theatre rose to the occasion and dedicated the “Variety Club” (a social club Harris and ten entertainers created one year prior to finding Catherine) to caring for the baby. After finding an adoptive family for Catherine, the men continued to raise money for other children in need.

Ribbon Cutting Event at Trevor Wood’s Home.

Trevor Wood of West Allis, Wisconsin suffered a traumatic brain injury which left him immobilized and unable to speak. His recovery from a comatose state was nothing short of miraculous, but another miracle was needed in order for him to return to his family’s 1920’s bungalow home: nearly $50,000 in construction costs to make the home accessible

Today, Variety has over 10,000 members and 50 chapters in 14 different countries. With a special interest in ensuring that all children, regardless of physical or economic ability, can be active and involved members of their community, Variety utilizes the efforts of volunteers and donations from corporate contributors to bring children real, tangible help. Variety’s National Mobility Program provides much needed assistance to children with mobility concerns. Recognizing that one of the most basic needs is unrestricted access to every day life activities, Variety provides durable mobility equipment, therapy, services and other opportunities to these children. Tri-North Builders has had a long, meaningful relationship with Variety. After several years of making financial contributions to the charity, Tri-North had the opportunity to partner with Variety in an incredible project in late 2009. After falling over 20 feet in a terrible accident at school,

14

30 Years, Many Stories Gala Program

Variety - The Children’s Charity for him. After his medical bills, the family was unable to afford the necessary renovations. A social worker from Trevor’s hospital approached Variety for help. Variety’s executive director immediately contacted Tri-North for advice. Within 24 hours, Tri-North committed to take on the project at no cost to the family. According to Tom Thayer, President and CEO of Tri-North, the decision was easy. Along with volunteers and other local subcontractors, Tri-North donated time, materials and labor. In addition to a 70 foot ramp to the entrance of the house, the Tri-North crew gutted the first floor of the house in order to build a new bedroom and bathroom for Trevor. Trevor’s recovery after returning home increased rapidly. He began to laugh, speak and even move his arms. Variety’s organizational efforts and Tri-North’s commitment to giving back to the community and affecting real change was a perfect marriage. Tri-North continues to support the work of Variety by making regular financial contributions and encouraging others to donate to Variety in lieu of giving

Tri-North gifts around the holidays. Special Honors: Variety awarded Tri-North Builders with the Heart of Gold Award at their Gala in November 2009 for leading the team of subcontractors and donating supplies, money and labor in order to get Trevor Wood’s home up to code.

Urban League of Greater Madison As a key component of the city’s commitment to invest in redeveloping the South Park Street community, the Urban League’s building received city funds and federal Community Development Block Grants. The City of Madison set a high goal of 22% participation by minority and women owned businesses. Tri-North set an even higher goal of 25%. By analyzing bids through a unique matrix which used ratings on a weighted system to combine the lowest price with experience, bond rating, and ownership status, Tri-North was able to achieve a 29% participation of minority and women owned subcontractors and suppliers—7% over the city’s goal.

Founded in 1910, The National Urban League grew from a grassroots movement into a historic civil rights organization with over 100 local affiliates, serving 2 million people nationwide. For over 40 years, the Greater Madison affiliate has worked to improve the social and economic conditions of African Americans, other people of color and the economically disadvantaged in Dane County. The Urban League is committed to transforming Greater Madison through a comprehensive strategic empowerment agenda that includes programs, services, advocacy, partnerships and coalition building. Tri-North Builders has had a special relationship with The Urban League of Greater Madison since they were selected to lead construction of the $5 million Center for Economic Development & Workforce Training completed in late 2009. They served as the project’s developer and program manager to oversee the purchase of the property, its design, construction and move-in process, as well as sustainable submissions. Early on in the planning stages, Tri-North recognized that in order to best address the Urban League’s needs, it was necessary to truly understand the organization. In particular, Darren Noak, President of Commercial Construction at Tri-North, spent a lot of time getting to know the Urban League and their goals. In fact, Darren was so inspired by his interactions with the organization, that he expressed his support by joining the Urban League’s board of directors where he currently serves as finance chairman. 16

Mirroring the Urban League’s career development programs, Tri-North partnered with Urban Construction, a small, minority-owned subcontractor. Serving as a mentor throughout the 8 month construction project, Tri-North shared their valuable expertise with the younger subcontractor on topics such as site management, accounting, streamlining business practices, and even sharing with them a more sophisticated method of estimating costs to help them be more successful in the future.

The collaboration was a wonderful success, resulting in a beautiful two-story 36,000 square foot facility built to LEED® Silver standards. It provides enough space to maximize the Urban League’s three-point empowerment strategy focused on College Readiness and Career Development, Workforce Development and Career Training, and Home Ownership and Equity Development. Additionally, the building was designed to allow for the easy addition of a 3rd floor so that the Urban League can expand onsite rather than purchasing more land or relocating. The Urban League shares the facility with Planned Parenthood and South Madison Branch Public Library, making it the first community services building of its kind in the entire nation.

REAP Food Group

Research, Education, Action and Policy on Food Group (REAP) is building a regional food system that is healthful, just, and both environmentally and economically sustainable. REAP connects producers, consumers, policy makers, educators, businesses and organizations to nourish the links between land and table. REAP is committed to projects that shorten the distance from farm to table, support small family farmers, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, preserve the diversity and safety of our food supply and address the food security of everyone in our community. REAP believes that our food system should be one that provides:

Tri-North’s dedication to treading lightly on the earth is firmly planted in a “practice what you preach” mentality. In addition to staying on the cutting edge of sustainable building practices, educating the public through their Green Seminar series, and building their own 53,000 square foot LEED® Gold certified headquarters that makes use of the best in sustainable construction, Tri-North is devoted to using financial success to promote other green initiatives. Recognizing that sustainable, healthy food is essential in creating and maintaining an environmentally-friendly society, Tri-North is honored to support REAP Food Group. The shared sustainability focus of REAP and Tri-North is deepened by both organizations commitment to educate the public on real life changes everyone can make to conserve the earth’s resources and promote the local economy. Perhaps the most well known of REAP’s educational programs is the highly circulated Southern Wisconsin Farm Fresh Atlas™ which lists farms, businesses, restaurants and farmers’ markets that sell their goods directly to customers in southern Wisconsin. Additionally, each farm and business

• Nutritious, safe and affordable food to all segments of society, • Fair compensation and safe, healthful working conditions for family farmers and food producers, • Support for agricultural and processing practices that protect our soil, water and genetic diversity, • Access to a variety of regional foods that come to our table with minimal energy-consuming transportation or packaging, • Public policies that promote a secure and sustainable regional “foodshed.” REAP’s tireless commitment to an all-encompassing sustainable food culture from production to consumer aligns perfectly with Tri-North Builders’ own commitment to sustainability. Tri-North understands the benefits of sustainable design and construction and is proud to remain at the forefront of green construction innovation. Encouraging clients to use green methods where possible and recommending sustainable solutions and construction methods is a regular step in every project. From recycling materials to building commissioning, Tri-North utilizes both simple methods that protect the environment and complex processes that result in world-leading green buildings. 18

listed pledges to operate under high sustainability standards such as reducing the application of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, treating animals with care, providing safe, fair working conditions for employees and making every effort to protect and sustain the region’s land and water resources. REAP also has numerous projects under their Farm to School program including a Classroom Snack Program where volunteers prepare hundreds of pounds of locally grown fruits and vegetables and deliver them to Madison elementary schools to be served as snacks in the classroom. Along with the snacks (which have included apples, carrot sticks, kohlrabi sticks, sweet potato sticks, cherry tomatoes, pepper strips, green beans, spinach and asparagus), REAP provides teachers with Snack Bites–educational materials containing information about the snack’s farm of origin and nutritional information.

We are proud to support Tri-North Builders, benefiting charitable groups in the community.

From the green roof at Tri-North’s headquarters which reduces water run-off through a natural absorption process, to REAP’s Buy Fresh Buy Local Southern Wisconsin® initiative which generates a mutually-beneficial, long-term network of local producers and buyers, together Tri-North and REAP Food Group consistently operate with sustainability in mind and challenge their community to do the same.

Marcus Corporation

The Marcus Corporation Founded in 1935 by Ben Marcus with the purchase of a single movie theatre in Ripon, WI, The Marcus Corporation is now a leader in the entertainment and lodging industries with its two divisions: Marcus Theatres & Marcus Hotels and Resorts. Marcus Theatres has grown to become the sixth largest motion picture circuit in the country, owning or operating 684 screens at 55 locations in key markets throughout the Midwest. Marcus Hotels & Resorts owns or manages a distinctive portfolio of 19 hotels, resorts and other properties in the United States. Tom Thayer, President and CEO of Tri-North Builders, describes the almost 30 year relationship with Marcus as “great.” He says that the companies’ shared philosophy on charity and philanthropy brought them close from the beginning of their partnership. Both companies are profoundly committed to giving back as much as they can to the communities that support them and to those in need.

Majestic Cinema, Brookfield, WI

United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Dane County, Tri-North, like the Marcus Corporation, takes pride in supporting community-building efforts. Ben Marcus is quoted as having said that “the backbone of a company is the human element,” and that “you must treat everyone with dignity.” That guiding principle has brought Marcus Theatres phenomenal success, and is at the center of their partnership with Tri-North Builders. The companies anticipate that they will continue to foster a wonderful, honest and prosperous relationship throughout numerous projects ahead.

Out of a deep affection for Milwaukee and his roots in the theatre industry, Ben Marcus devoted his efforts to keeping the Milwaukee art scene funded, vibrant and growing. The Marcus Corporation heavily funded the revitalized Center for the Performing Arts in addition to the Marcus Amphitheater, a spectacular 23,000 capacity outdoor concert venue on Milwaukee’s lakefront that is host to the biggest stars during Milwaukee’s famed Summerfest and throughout the entire summer season. The Marcus Corporation’s commitment to giving back to the Milwaukee community constantly inspires and challenges Tri-North Builders to do the same in Madison, WI. From sponsoring local events like Concerts on the Square, to raising over $140,000 for the Urban League of Greater Madison, to being the top corporate donor of 22

Marcus Corporation Headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, Marcus Theatres’ vision is to “create magical movie memories” by exceeding guest expectations in every possible way. Featuring the best motion picture presentation with fast and friendly service, Marcus Theatres delivers a comfortable, exciting and memorable out-of-home entertainment experience. Marcus theatres are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to provide crisp, amazing picture and clear digital sound. All theaters are outfitted with assistive listening devices for deaf and hard of hearing guests, and captioning options are available in select auditoriums. Digital 3D is featured in select auditoriums at locations throughout their circuit. Tri-North Builders began what would be a long and wonderful relationship with Marcus Theatres in 1982—just one year after Joe Donnino, Donald Jones and Thomas Thayer founded the company. Their first project together was The Marcus Eastgate Cinema. A year after the project was complete, Tri-North was awarded their second job with Marcus—West Point cinema in Brookfield, WI. The companies found a mutual respect after working on those initial projects, and since then, Marcus Theatres has awarded numerous jobs across the Midwest to Tri-North. Marcus Hotels & Resorts is a veritable force in the hospitality industry, with an unmatched expertise in historical renovations, development and management. The senior management team is large enough to bring dynamic experience to developing and operating luxury hotels and resorts, but conscious enough to bring personal attention and involvement to each project, regardless of size. This combination of remarkable resources and unwavering dedication to excellence has made Marcus Hotels & Resorts an industry leader. In addition to their select portfolio of upscale hotels and luxury resorts, Marcus Hotels & Resorts also provides management and financial expertise in meetings and conference marketing and management, spa and fitness, accommodations, retail, quality food and beverage, recreation and resort facilities and real estate management. The Hotels and Resorts division began in 1962 when Marcus purchased the then bankrupt Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Marcus vowed to restore the Victorian masterpiece to its original grandeur. Significant renovations and the addition of a 23-story guest tower

solidified the extraordinarily ornate structure’s continued status as the crown jewel of the city. In 2007, Tri-North Builders completed three new phases of renovations on the heritage-rich Pfister Hotel for Marcus Hotels & Resorts. Renovations included the addition of a spa and updates to the lobby, guest rooms, restaurant, pool and fitness area. The 14.2 million dollar project received high praise and the prestigious AAA Four-Diamond award. The hotel also holds membership in the elite Historic Hotels of America and Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. Although its roots are in Milwaukee, the influence of Marcus Hotels & Resorts on the hospitality industry extends far beyond the company’s home city. Marcus Hotels & Resorts owns and/or operates numerous other premiere hotels and resorts in the country, including the fashionable Platinum Hotel in Las Vegas and the elegant Four Points by Sheraton in downtown Chicago. Innovative thinking is the rope that supports businesses so they can reach higher ground. Without it, a company’s ability to prosper is limited. At Michael Best, we admire innovative thought. And we practice it every day. We are continually looking for new ways to solve legal problems and deliver results our clients cannot achieve by doing business as usual.

Michael Best & Friedrich LLP Founded in 1848, Michael Best has earned a reputation as a leading law firm in the Midwest. Approximately 220 attorneys serve clients at offices in Milwaukee, Madison, Waukesha and Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. Michael Best’s rich tradition and long history is a testament to their ability to remain dynamic and responsive to the significant changes facing businesses over the past 160+ years. Since their inception, they have remained true to the firm’s longstanding goal of delivering results for their clients. That strong foundation continues to guide their work in the constantly evolving business environment facing clients today. Michael Best is able to draw from their extensive legal and business knowledge to anticipate and meet their clients’ 21st century needs. As a broad-based business law firm, they are ideally positioned to handle a wide range of business legal matters across practice groups. From Intellectual Property, Employment Relations, Litigation and Transactional— covering wealth planning, tax, mergers and acquisitions, real estate and environmental, their legal practice groups are organized to respond to the most pressing issues facing companies today. Serving cutting-edge industries in technology, advanced manufacturing and energy, and, they have the necessary years of experience to offer sophisticated counsel to banking and financial services. Michael Best has been Tri-North Builders’ primary attorney since the founding of the company, assisting with all legal needs, including construction contracting, real estate matters, corporate law, employment law and disputes. Their expertise and diligence has consistently been an essential resource for Tri-North and the success of the company. In addition to legal advice, Michael Best has connected Tri-North with other partners who have helped them grow, such as The Creative Company—Tri-North’s marketing, public relations and brand strategy partner. In early 2000 when Tri-North made the commitment to begin focusing on sustainability and becoming a leader in the green building movement, Michael Best joined in the cause. The Michael Best team has advised Tri-North on numerous sustainable projects, including Tri-North’s LEED® Gold Certified headquarters in Fitchburg, assisting them in the negotiation, financing and purchase of property. Another major sustainable project that Michael Best significantly aided Tri-North in was the Urban League of Greater Madison’s headquarter building located on the south side of Madison. Tri-North was selected by the Urban

League to serve as developer and design-builder for the high profile project that used both city and federal Community Development Block Grants. Michael Best helped Tri-North and the Urban League teams develop the project by arranging the necessary local government approvals, contracts and agreements. Michael Best also assisted the team with drafting construction contracts for the core, shell and interior build-outs which included the Urban League’s offices, a Planned Parenthood Clinic and the new South Side branch for the Madison Public Library. For this project, Tri-North mirrored the career development work of Urban League by mentoring a small, minority-owned subcontractor throughout the 8 months of construction, sharing their valuable expertise with the younger subcontractor on topics such as site management, accounting, streamlining business practices and a sophisticated method of estimating costs. The team at Michael Best assisted Tri-North in crafting the mentorship agreement that guided the relationship. Due in large part to the collaborative efforts of all of the parties involved, Tri-North was able to complete the project on time and under budget. Michael Best and Tri-North share a commitment to building enduring relationships with clients, vendors and employees as well as corporate policies and initiatives that promote the health of their communities and the environment. That common foundation in conjunction with both companies’ expertise has fortified the partnership, and continues to propel them forward together.

Creative Company The Creative Company is a digital media and public relations agency based in Madison, Wisconsin. They have recently received two gold Hermes Awards for their design work and have received more 2010 Alchemy Awards than any other agency in Madison from the Public Relations Society of America (5 Awards). The agency is also a 2006 Wisconsin Better Business Bureau “Business Ethics” Torch Award finalist and has been recognized twice by Madison Magazine as one of the best places to work in Dane County. The Creative Company’s system gives their clients the ability to connect cross channel. Social media has given businesses such as Tri-North Builders unprecedented access to what their clients and customers think. By understanding that the customer is intrinsically linked to the loyalty loop, Creative Company helps clients succeed. Unlike other forms of advertising that push a message out, Creative Company’s approach is to draw a client into the story. Their primary goal is to build a community of raving fans around the client’s brand. The system begins with the website which 90% of customers view as their first point of contact. This hub is the launching pad from which everything else is connected including but not limited to public relations, social media, e-mail marketing, visual branding and events. Their value system of putting people first and making it easier to interact and engage with the brand aligns perfectly with Tri-North Builders’ value system. Tri-North connected with The Creative Company in 2009 through their attorney, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP. They were searching for a partner who could not only showcase their work, but their clients’ as well. The Creative Company arose to the challenge.

Thanks to the collaboration of The Creative Company, Tri-North and several other instrumental parties, the project was wildly successful. The project exceeded the city of Madison’s highest goal of achieving 22% participation from women and minority-owned subcontractors and suppliers. The Urban League received the Kresge Foundation grant, thanks to tremendous community support that The Creative Company helped garner. The story was publicized in major media outlets such as the Wisconsin State Journal and NBC15 among many others. The grand opening ceremony was so well attended that there was standing room only. Most importantly, the Urban League gained a beautiful, facility built to LEED® Silver standards on the south side of Madison from which they can continue their mission of eliminating social and economic barriers for African Americans, other people of color and the economically disadvantaged in Dane County. President of The Creative Company, Laura Gallagher, has used the success of her nationally-recognized business to make a difference in her community. She is committed to organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club, SOULutions and The River Food Pantry. In 2010, The Creative Company began hosting Leader to Leader events that encourage leaders to gather together to create positive change in their businesses and the community as a whole. Tri-North Builders is deeply committed to giving back to the community as much as possible, and that commitment is taken into consideration when selecting business partners. The charitable work of The Creative Company solidifies them as an extraordinary partner for Tri-North.

One of the Creative Company’s first major projects with Tri-North was the Urban League of Greater Madison’s headquarter building. Tri-North was selected by the Urban League to serve as developer and design-builder for the high profile project that used both city funds and federal Community Development Block grants. The project integrated numerous points of community interest, and The Creative Company successfully crafted a multi-media marketing strategy involving local and national TV stations, radio stations, newspapers, magazines and trade publications. Additionally, they created an extensive multitiered online campaign utilizing e-newsletters, video, social media and live coverage of the grand opening on Twitter.
