IN t e r [ v e l o p i n g ] IN f r a s t r u c t u r e s taipei cultural center

Our Taipei Railway Cultural Center aims to address the interactions of cultural and commercial elements in Taipei. It is composed of two spines that intersect on the Northeast part of the site. The North spine contains the commercial programs and the Southwest spine contains the cultural programs. We developed the spine structures based on our site context and analysis – areas of spines of movement and areas of the most dense activity and population. The spine structures then developed the envelope to create specific spaces and moments, such as thegrand entrance created by the enveloping of the two spines’ (Northwest) elevated intersection. The elevated commercial spine creates an opening to gather people from the densest spot that we analyzed – the area of the pre-existing Living Mall. The opening also leads people to the central exterior space. Furthermore, it acts as a transition from the interior spaces of the commercial spine to the exterior spaces of the cultural spine. This is a transition of program, as well as a transition of indoor to outdoor spaces. In terms of structure, the spines are created by bent columns that gradually blend to the primary rib structure supporting the envelope. Besides the primary rib structure, the covering is also supported by a secondary rib structure that runs across the whole cover and a tertiary rib structure that braces the primary and secondary rib structures. The cohesive form, program, and structure dramatically take a hold of the historic site by celebrating the old while implementing the new. In Collaboration with Danny Hopkins

SAP2000 project structural design studies

This project utilizes the structural anaylsis software, SAP2000, to study truss structure for a complicated atrium design. The goal was to develop a truss design that kept the atrium light, transparent, and efficient in transfering the dead loads from the point of connection (between the building and the atrium) to the ground.

o r t h a g o n a l vs d i a g o n a l kunsthalle museum

Separated but Unified Located in Syracuse downtown, in the diagonal path and in front of City Hall, the kunsthalle connects the existing districts and historical landmarks with its programs. This is based on how the diagonal path connects the historical public open spaces of downtown and unifies these separate spaces. Because the project is in this diagonal path of open spaces, it itself is an exterior space following the idea of separation and unity. The programs are scattered in separate buildings on an orthagonal grid, but are connected together by the main diagonal exterior space. Secondarily, the diagonal circulation also contrasts the orthagonal grid. The orthagonal grid is based on the surrounding landmarks and also organizes the strutural systems -- wide concrete arches and slender white plaster columns. The main diagonal exterior space is characterized with its steel pergolas that bring natural lighting and vegetation to the public space. Steel pergolas also act as the skin enclosing the main diagonal exterior space and all of the scattered spaces to provide a transition into the museum. reciprocal house house for twins

Designed for twins of different personalities (introvert and extrovert) but of the same interest (marionettes), this house revolves around the central pond, which acts as a enclosed storage for the introvert’s marionettes. Extending from the pond to the surrounding landscape are accessible shelves that hold the extrovert’s marionettes. While the introvert’s apparatus for storage remains in the central pond, the extrovert’s apparatus acts as a transition from indoor to outdoor spaces. The spaces in the house follows this rule, spaces closer to the center are more indoor and spaces farther away have outdoor qualities. Materials: Mylar and rapidograph ink

uncurling unique art

AFSF high school design competition 3rd place in best design

The sustainable Center of San Francisco Film Art, located in San Francisco’s SOMA district celebrates the rich film history of the San Francisco Bay Area and educates the public on the art, history, and process of film and digital media. Inspired by Wright’s Guggenheim Museum, the center was designed to resemble a film roll with the ramp leading to different rooms like a film roll uncurling different pictures. In a film roll, each picture is unique and different from the other pictures. Similarly, the rooms that the ramp leads to are unique and have different functions and spatial qualities. The building also has green roofs and solar panels for energy and water conservation. Software Used: Autodesk Revit Architecture
