MY LIFE MY STYLE Celebrity stylist Sarah Wharton reveals her clever closet secrets y work life varies hugely. Sometimes I’m with a client knocking out a creative brief, sometimes I’m surrounded by millions of shoes on a shoot, sometimes I’m at home writing. I’ve got pieces that multi-task (a denim mini-dress is a current favourite), and versatile items I’ll never regret splashing out on – like my beige mac. I normally wear flats to run around to meetings but I always keep a good pair of heels in my big day bag (current favourites are patent orange). I used to dress up more for appointments but the older I get, the more I just want to be me. When I’m shooting overseas in the heat I’ve got a complete wardrobe I keep in a case ready to go: tees, cropped jersey trousers and a couple of cute dresses for evening. Most of my closet has a utilitarian look as I love anything that riffs on a uniform. I’d wear the Brownie frock of my youth if I thought I could get away with it – complete with purse belt.”

your decade 3 women, 3 ages, 1 trend: the La Redoute style challenge Nautical was one of the major stories on the autumn 09 catwalks. Double-breasted silhouettes were streamlined with belted blazers (Hermès) and skinny cigarette pants (Lagerfeld), all set off with button detailing and reams of gold chains. The knack to this trend is knowing how to put your own spin on it. With the help of our stylist, we asked three women of different ages to prove just how easy it can be to dress for your decade… nautical-style.

EXPERIMENTAL 20’s HATTIE HUMPHREYS, 26, Manchester Three years after university, writer Hattie’s staple wardrobe hadn’t graduated beyond her graduation. “I feel like I haven’t left my student days behind,” she explains. “I’d love to look more grown-up, but I don’t want to be lamb dressed as mutton.” Stylist Debby Barry took the matter in hand, pairing wet-look leggings with a short blazer and studded shoeboots for a sophisticated grunge-luxe twist on the nautical trend. Initially, Hattie had doubts about the leggings: “I liked them on other girls but I wasn’t sure they’d suit me.” It was a bold move, but it worked. “I love them!” says the new body-con convert. “They’re really fun. I’d definitely wear them for a night out.” “In your twenties, fashion should be about experimenting,” says Debby. “Don’t worry about making mistakes.”

DEEPA THAkkER, 31, Surrey A diary crammed full of client meetings dictates marketing manager Deepa’s style, and has led her down the safe path of a corporate wardrobe. “I thought this nautical trend might be too casual for me,” she explains. “Dressing in a classic way seems smarter.” Stylist Debby was keen to complement Deepa’s existing wardrobe and show how a single new piece can update a look: “By the time most women hit their thirties, they’re more confident with their individual style. They want to buy investment pieces.” She chose a trophy coat for Deepa. “A statement military coat is bang-on-trend, and this one marries the button detail of Armani with the asymmetric hems of Comme des Garçons.” Deepa’s verdict? “I adore it! SOPHISTICATED 40’s SAMMIE McCARTHY, 41, London Production controller and yummy-mummy Sammie rarely ventured out of her jeans and trainers, choosing function over fashion. “Lots of women in their forties get into a style rut,” says Debby. “They think that trends are for teenagers, but I wanted to show Sammie that she can introduce quirky items into her wardrobe without looking like a fashion victim.” Sammie had reservations. “I wasn’t keen on the nautical look,” she explains. “I’d been there and done it 15 years ago and felt it was too young for me.” But the combination of micro-jacket and sheer striped blouse convinced her that interpretation is key to dressing for your decade: “I feel confident and stylish – I’m not ruling anything out now!”

AUTUMN’S USUAL failsafe tone – black, black, black – is getting a run for its money this season. It seems that designers have reacted to the gloomy global markets by injecting a large dollop of hopefulness through their choice of palettes, and the catwalks were a

carnival of colour. “Bright jewel tones are making a comeback with some neon and acid shades thrown into the mix,” explains Ali Hall, editor of shopping magazine Look. She encourages us all to try to look on the bright side of life this season: “Clashing colours have

been a huge hit with designers so test out contrasting shades you’ve never tried before. Red was a catwalk favourite, with black and red proving to be the statement colour combo. Neutrals such as grey have style longevity and act as a simple blank canvas, so

edit a fashion and beauty magazine and I’m in and out of meetings all day. I have to ensure that my outfits are smart enough to carry me through, so I plan my look the night before, or if I’m going to the catwalk shows, a week ahead. There is always some pressure when packing for fashion week. I choose certain trends that work for me and my body type, and merge them into my existing wardrobe. I have to look put-together for work but I can sometimes wear jeans – always teamed with a sharp jacket or top. Off-duty I wear skinny black jeans and flats. I love the new minimalism, statement shoulders, shaggy gilets, metallics, sharply cut body-con shifts and masculine dressing. My advice for this season is to buy pieces that work with your existing style and wardrobe but maybe treat yourself to one fabulous impulse piece – at whatever price level you are comfortable with. We all need to smile, and fashion is a wonderful way to do it.”

3 women, 3 shapes, 1 trend: the La Redoute style challenge From Paris to Milan, the autumn 09 shows treated fashionistas to a spot of colour therapy. The runways were awash with brights, from top-to-toe neon at Dior to a collection reminiscent of a Dulux colour chart courtesy of Henry Holland. But bold hues court attention, so how do you disguise your hang-ups without hiding your assets? With the help of our stylist, we challenged three women with very different shapes to channel this season’s obsession with brights.

Classic Pear Adeline Bonnet, 37, Buckinghamshire Shape-savvy Adeline knows what does and doesn’t suit her. “I’m what you call a pear shape – thin waist and bigger hips – so I don’t wear things that fit close to the body.” A laid-back dress-code at her office has resulted in a closetful of jeans and T-shirts. Stylist Debby Barry added a playful twist to this base with clashing scarves and quirky shoes, and recommended straight jeans as an alternative to the classic bootcut. “Just as slimming, but the shape is more modern,” she explains. The scarves proved a big hit with Adeline: “I love the idea of having the two together – and with a neutral base, I can add any colours I want!”

To take advantage of her height, Debby dressed her in floor-length wide-legged trousers and a V-neck sweater to compliment her curves. The result was a slimming look that drew the eye down the body, and the change was remarkable. “Pairing the plain black trousers with the violet sweater really brought her alive,” says Debby. Mei Mei was impressed too: “I love the beads! I tend to underdress for evening but this is definitely something I could wear to the office and then out to dinner with the girls.”

Faced with finding workwear that’s both professional and fashionable, many of us choose to play it safe with the same old look year after year. With the help of stylist Debby Barry, La Redoute challenged three hardworking women to step out of their comfort zones in brand new office-ready looks. Here are the results...

Charlotte Eldridge, 31, Surrey Quays When it came to dressing for her job, social work recruiter Charlotte never cut corners. “My company operates a smart-casual policy, but I always dress on the smarter side.” But corporate two pieces can run the risk of looking severe, stylist Debby warns: “Women shouldn’t be afraid to have fun with their look in the workplace.” She illustrated her point by dressing Charlotte in a sharply tailored pencil skirt and offsetting this with a super-feminine ruffle blouse in a muted tone. “Grey is a great foil for black and can take any accent colour,” Debby explains. Charlotte was a fan. “Everyone commented on how tiny my waist looked! I loved the boutique feel of the outfit – it was really glamorous.”

I’m the mistress of converting an outfit from day to play by switching accessories and glamming up my hair. Tearing around in heels would reduce me to tears, so I wear statement flats: studded ankle boots or over-the-knee numbers to add a rock edge. When you have fun with fashion you can let go of the pressure to be on-trend. A Little Fuchsia Dress – LFD – is my fashion failsafe. I have six, ranging from Vivienne Westwood to French Connection. Kathryn price, 31, london Savvy shopper Kathryn isn’t afraid to embrace catwalk fashions, but cherry-picks her favourites to work into her existing wardrobe. “Every season I buy three or four amazing pieces, but I wear them with something I’ve had for ages,” she explains. Stylist Lizanne took advantage of Kathryn’s slender figure, and with Missoni in mind, evoked the layering trend with reams of contrasting luxe knits. “Kathryn’s colouring suits these gorgeous shades of gold and grey,” she says. “She looked fab in the polo neck, the knitted dress and the amazing cardigan with a scarf attached, which we all fell in love with!”

s a freelance journalist I work from home, so my look is very relaxed, but if I’ve got a meeting I’ll step it up and add good accessories. They make such a difference! My off-duty look is definitely more fashion-forward, with statement pieces for the evening. I love my leather jacket and my big Anya Hindmarch tote – it dresses up the most casual look. I also have some great skinny Balenciaga trousers that work for all occasions. For autumn I’ll be channelling leather, power shoulders, sequins and studded accessories. They’re strong trends, so it’s important to keep the look simple. Leather is sexy but must be kept minimal, and the same goes for monochrome, sequins and studs. If in doubt start with an accessory. My signature look is tailored and chic, and to some extent I like to look ‘de jour’, but I adapt trends to suit me. In my opinion, body shape is the most important thing to work with, and I know what works for mine.”

Adeline Guillot, 27, London Trend sceptic Adeline usually shuns designer fashion for fuss-free jeans and T-shirts. “Catwalk clothes seem so different that I can’t see how I would wear them day-to-day,” she explains. Stylist Lizanne took her cues from designer label Krizia’s contemporary spin on put-together primness. No-nonsense derby lace-ups offset a super-feminine blouse, while the thigh-grazing hemline of this mushroom skirt gave the look a sexy-secretary twist. It’s a silhouette that Lizanne says we haven’t seen the last of: “These skirts will be everywhere in spring – designers like Luella actually added padding to theirs.” Adeline’s verdict? “It’s a very different look for me, but I felt really comfortable.”

According to Lizanne, Burberry is channelling military for next summer. And Beverley just loved the results. “I’m definitely buying more belts!”

Jo Buchmuller, 41, Bristol Lizanne took inspiration from Jo’s signature bohemian look, dressing her in a Seventies-style print for a twist on the trend championed by Anna Sui and Etro. “We’ve gone for two dresses layered, with a hint of print showing.” The addition of opaque tights made Jo’s outfit winter-friendly, though Lizanne reveals that print is oh-so-versatile and offers an easy way of staying ahead of the fashion pack: “These are dresses that could work for spring and summer. There will be a lot of print around, so it’s a good investment buy.”

I carry a smaller clutch inside my day bag so last minute dinner dates are covered, and the bigger one stays in the office. I’d like to be more of a girly girl but when I do try to glitz up, I end up changing before the day is out. Give me a classic LBD over fuchsia taffeta any day! My fashion rule? Don’t binge on of-the-moment trends. A nod to new looks is enough and prevents you ending up with regret buys. This winter try a pair of suede over-the-knee boots, and if you want to score early catwalk points for spring 2010, go for anything with a graphic print.”
