General Lázár Mészáros (1796-1858), was the Minister of War during the 1848 Hungarian Revolution... After the Battle of Temesvár and the ensuing failure of the war of independence, he left Hungary on 14 August 1849 for Turkey. About 1.500 refugees were listed and when Turkey rejected their extradition, the Russians hinted the threat of a war, the English and the French promised to help Turkey in case of a conflict... Mészáros left Turkey in May 1851. He settled at first in France, which he left upon Napoleon III's coup d'état in December 1851. He went to the Isle of Jersey to meet Victor Hugo who organised a photographic studio. In the summer of 1853, Mészáros moved to the United States, where he tried farming in Iowa, and eventually settled in Flushing, New York. In October 1858, a short time before his death, Mészáros returned to England. (Cf. Dr György Csorba, Hungarian Emigrants of the 1848-1849 in the Ottoman Empire). A variant in the Jersey album at Orsay : Françoise Helbrun et Quentin Bajac, En collaboration avec le soleil, Victor Hugo, photographies de l’exil, Paris, 1998, p. 128.

Week 12 : March 23-29, 2015

Alexander Shemlaiev (born 1956) Laughing Chukcha Western Chukotka, 1989 Vintage silver print, 215x145 mm, probably unique, no edition was done. Chukchi, the native people of Chukotka, the most remote northeast corner of Russia, are a common minority targeted for generic ethnic jokes in Russia.[11] In jokes, they are depicted as generally primitive, uncivilized and simple-minded, but clever in a naive kind of way. A propensity for constantly saying "odnako" — equivalent to "however" depending on context — is a staple of Chukcha jokes. A Chukcha comes into a shop and asks: "Do you have color TVs?" "Yes, we do." "Give me a green one." Provenance : Center for Art and Design, Moscow, 1991
