"The modern age, which believes that truth is neither given to nor disclosed to but produced by the human mind, has assigned, since Leibniz, mathematical, scientific, and philosophical truths to the common species of rational truth as distinguished from factual truth... The chance of factual truth surviving the onslaught of power are very slim indeed, it is always in danger of being manœuvered out of the world not only for a time, but potentially forever.

Truth and Photography

Facts and events are infinitely more fragiles things than axioms, discoveries, theories..." Hannah Arendt, Truth and Politics.

[Maria Spiridonova (1884-1941)] Six Left-SR Ballots for Russian Constituent Assembly Petrograd, November 1917 Six original paper ballots fot Maria Spiridonova and Left-SR candidates, with a vintage photographic postcard of the famous Russian socialist revolutionary. This 1917 Assembly is generally recognized as the first democratically elected legislative body of any kind in Russian history. It met for 13 hours, from 4 p.m. to 5 a.m., 18 January 1918. Also considered the last democratic election until the 1990’s.

200 euros Spiridonova assassination of police official Luzhenovsky in 1905 was the most famous terrorist act by a woman in Russia, and her subsequent abuse by police made her a celebrated martyr. After 11 years in Siberia, she returned as a heroine of the Revolution. She led the Left SRs into alliance with Lenin and the Bolsheviks, but was incarcerated in a mental sanitarium after the Left SRs broke with the Bolsheviks in 1918. During the Great Purge, she was consigned to the Gulag and summarily executed in the summer of 1941.

[Mario Giacomelli (1925-20 00)] Walking with Aldrin on the surface of the Moon Senigallia, July 1969 Vintage Agfacolor silver print, 128x90 mm, from the studio of Italian artist Mario Giacomelli. A conceptual amateur cropping from the celebrated Italian lanscape photographer’s archive. Only the Agfa watermark indicates it cannot be an original NASA print, supposed to be only on US Kodak papers. A Man on the Moon is one of the most famous photographs of the 20th Century : Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin walks on the surface of the moon near the leg of the lunar module Eagle. Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong took this photograph with a 70mm lunar surface camera. Armstrong and Aldrin explored the Sea of Tranquility for two and a half hours while crewmate Michael Collins orbited above in the command module Columbia. There has been much speculation about Aldrin's desire at the time to be the first astronaut to walk on the Moon on July 21, 1969. According to different NASA accounts, he had originally been proposed as the first to step onto the Moon's surface, but due to the physical positioning of the astronauts inside the compact lunar landing module, it was easier for the commander, Neil Armstrong, to be the first to exit the spacecraft. Aldrin, a Presbyterian, was the first person to hold a religious ceremony on the Moon.
