From April 16 to April 19, the Aipad Photography Show New York, the annual fair dedicated to photography and held by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers, will return to the Park Avenue Armory for its 35th edition. The Seventh Regiment Armory Conservancy finalized a 99-year lease with the state and assumed control of the landmarked 1879 armory, after receiving final approval from the offices of the state comptroller and attorney general. The dingy, dark brick building is now the site of several prominent arts and antiques shows. It also serves as a homeless shelter for women.

Aipad Week
A veterans group that has long occupied parts of the armory and has used the building as a gathering place, the Seventh Regiment Veterans, have resisted the state's plan to turn over the building to the Conservancy, preferring that they be named the building's permanent stewards. The veterans have met with a series of defeats in court, and have recently concentrated on delaying the project by instigating community opposition.

Antoine Claudet (1797-1867) Stereo Portrait of a very young lady London, c. 1853 Stereodaguerreotype, original leather protection, label at back of the plate, “by special appointment photographer to Her Majesty. Having acquired a share in L. J. M. Daguerre's invention, Claudet was one of the first to practice daguerreotype portraiture in England, and he invented the red (safe) dark-room light, and the idea of using painted backdrops is also attributed to him. In 1851 he moved his business to 107 Regent Street, where he established what he called a "Temple to Photography." Claudet received many honours, among which was the appointment, in 1853, as "Photographer-in-ordinary" to Queen Victoria.

Édouard Baldus (1813-1889) La Sainte Chapelle Paris, c.1855 Large salt paper print from a collodion gllass negative, 430x336, signed, titled and numbered “38” in the negative, strong color. “Baldus was born in the tiny Prussian town of Grünebach and baptized "Eduard" in the parish church of Kirchen, where the pastor provided me with baptismal records when I was doing my research. Before arriving in Paris in 1838, Baldus was said to have served in the Prussian military, to have exhibited paintings in Antwerp, and to have traveled in the United States as an itinerant painter, enjoying success in New York, though I never found evidence to confirm any of that... So you might imagine my wariness when I first saw the email about the "secret" of Baldus, sent by Dr. Peter Lindlein : "After his time as a soldier Eduard Baldus lives in Cologne. The life of a soldier is too modest, the pay too meager, and Cologne, a city with seventy thousand inhabitants, offers too many temptations for a country boy standing at the edge of adult life... "The young man is having a good time with counterfeit money. The maximum penalty by Prussian law, lifelong penal servitude, does not deter him... Eduard Baldus is wanted throughout the Rhine Province. All of the official gazettes carry the following arrest warrant, dated February 16, 1835: Warrant of Apprehension. The former bombardier Eduard Baldus, born in Grünebach, in the county Altenkirchen, governorate Koblenz, who is accused of making and distributing forged Cash Notes, evaded the corresponding investigation by escape..." Lucien Clergue (1934-2014) Young gypsy king with young dog Arles, 1965 Vintage silver print, 240x180 mm, photographer’s stamp, signature and caption : “"Nicolas Reyes (Gypsy Kings)" and "1965 by Lucien Clergue printed 1965 by Lucien Clergue".

The third issue of Nicéphore, cahier de photographies, is anounced for next month. After the selfportrait of Gustave Le Gray and the silhouette of an anxious Charles Baudelaire, the 112 pages publication describes the complete investigation about a pair of direct positives melanotypes on paper depicting a group of Paris artists. Found in a group of autographs letters of a Parisian antiquarian book dealer who build in the 1920’s Myriam de Rotschild’s collection, they had been waiting some attention for nearly a century. In conversation with Vincent Van Gogh are Paul Gauguin, Emile Bernard, Félix Jobbé-Duval. Isolated and lonesome on the second plate we recognize Paul Signac. The location, identified as the courtyard of the “Salle de répétitions du Théatre Libre” proposed by André Antoine as a free exhibition hall to young artists, suggests the photographs correspond to the little known exhibition Van Gogh shared with Seurat and Signac, exhibition which originated a dispute with Bernard. The collodions bear the stamp of an exclusive distributor “Gautier-Martin” but no signature, they could be attributed to the Theo Van Gogh friend, Jules Antoine, art critic of the Neo-impressionism movement, brother of André Antoine and amateur photographer. Then these collodions not only show us for the first time the face of Vincent van Gogh but document the exact moment when a group of artists in 1887 brought art in revolution.
