Grace before anything else
From 1923 onwards, Drtikol gradually moved away from pictorialist and symbolist schools and moved very personally towards avant-garde movements, cubism, futurism and expressionism. In his works dating from his great period 1923-1929, often very careful pigment prints, we observe the importance of light modulation, details that accentuate the beauty of elementary forms. Drtikol promotes dynamic poses by using tight planes, or creating the illusion of movement in a number of detail changes, adding to the composition impressive accessories, cylindrical rods, creating deep shadows projected on the backgrounds. The e-bulletins present articles as well as selections of books, albums, photographs and documents as they have been handed down to the actual owners by their creators and by amateurs from past generations. The Drtikol rare image will be at auction on April 5 2018

At the same time, he accentuates the dynamism by the confrontation of the bodies with rounded shapes with stairs of sharp shapes, slabs, blocks and other geometric decorations. While previously Drtikol photographed women as symbolic literary figures, now in his films, dancers and gymnasts celebrate the ancient ideal of physical health and transcended beauty.
Even more important is the place left in his work to the erotic dimension. Most of its many models have seen their charm resist all the transformations of contemporary taste for eight decades. However, for Drtikol, photography was above all a manifesto, a symbolic means of displaying philosophical, religious and psychological questions that seemed fundamental to him. Although in the 1920s he became internationally renowned, his work was later forgotten during the German occupation of Germanic Europe and the long winter of popular democracies that followed. Before entering the pantheon of the history of photography.
