Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa (1532–1592) was a Spanish explorer,

author, historian, mathematician, astronomer, and scientist. His birthplace is not certain... In 1555 he began his exploring career, sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. His first destination was New Spain (in what is today Mexico), where he lived for two years. Little is known of this period in his life, other than that he encountered difficulties with the Inquisition. He then sailed to Peru, where he lived for more than twenty years, gaining a reputation as a navigator.

In Lima he was accused by the Inquisition of possessing two magic rings and some magic ink and of following the precepts of Moses. He then joined Álvaro de Mendaña's expedition through the southern Pacific Ocean to find the Terra Australis Incognita, which, should Mendaña have followed Sarmiento's indications, had reached New Zealand or/and Australia; but they discovered the Solomon Islands instead, in 1568. The expedition failed to find gold and attempts at establishing a settlement in the Solomon Islands ended in failure. In order to take credit for the discoveries for himself Mendaña threw the journals and maps made by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa overboard and abandoned him in Mexico. However, a trial was then held in Lima, with the result giving Sarmiento credit for the discoveries.

In 1572 he was commissioned by Francisco de Toledo, the fifth Viceroy of Peru, to write a history of the Incas. Toledo hoped such a history would justify Spanish colonisation by revealing the violent history of the Incas. Sarmiento collected oral accounts first hand from Inca informants and produced a history (commonly titled The History of the Incas*) that chronicles their violent conquest of the region.

He became the commander of the naval station in the Pacific in 1578, when Sir Francis Drake attacked the coasts of Peru and Mexico. Sarmiento de Gamboa sailed out of the port of Callao with eleven vessels in 1579 to capture Drake.

He did not find Drake, who had gone westward through the Pacific Ocean, but he explored the southern Pacific Coast of South America, passed the Magellan Strait from west to east for the second time, drawing precious maps of many points of the Strait, and, after an impressive sailing of the Atlantic Ocean from southwest to northeast, he reached Spain in late 1580.

* The original manuscript was lost and its existence was known about only through examination of correspondence between Sarmiento de Gamboa and Phillip II. An inventory of all manuscripts existing in public libraries was ordered by the German government at the end of the 19th century and the original manuscript finally found in the University of Gottingen in 1893 and first published in 1906.

Fortifying the strait and closing the loop of the Columbian exchange

On his reporting the results of his expedition to King Philip II of Spain, the latter resolved to fortify the Strait, and in 1581 sent an expedition of twenty-four vessels with 2,500 men from Cadiz, under the command of Sarmiento de Gamboa and Diego Flores Valdez. The expedition lost eight vessels in a storm, and Flores, on account of rivalry with Sarmiento de Gamboa, abandoned him with twelve vessels in the entry of the Strait and returned to Spain. With only four vessels, Sarmiento de Gamboa continued the voyage, arriving in January 1583 at a favorable point, where he established a fort and colony garrisoned by 300 men which he called Rey Don Felipe. The settlement failed shortly after he left, and when Thomas Cavendish visited the ruins in 1587 he renamed the place Port Famine.

In late 1584 Sarmiento de Gamboa sailed for Europe, but he was captured by an English fleet under to Sir Walter Raleigh and carried to England where he was presented to Queen Elizabeth I of England.

They had a conversation in Latin, which was their only common language, and despite Spain's official policy of keeping all navigational information secret, shared his maps with British cartographers. Queen Elizabeth gave him a "Letter of Peace" to be carried to King Phillip II of Spain.

However, on his way back to Spain he was captured by French Huguenots and was kept prisoner until 1588. During that time Spain mounted the Spanish Armada and attacked the English fleet... Meanwhile, his colony dissolved and gradually perished of starvation; one of the survivors was rescued by Cavendish's fleet in 1587, and another by Meriche in 1589. After his liberation, Sarmiento de Gamboa made a representation of his experience and a complaint against Flores to King Philip II; it seems that his complaint was neglected.

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa spent the rest of his life dedicating himself to his writings and worked as an editor of poetry. On his last naval mission in the service of the king he was made Admiral of an armada of galleons en route to the Indies. He died on board ship, near the coast of Lisbon.

“... lorsque la flotte arrive enfin à l’embouchure, le 1er février 1584, il ne reste que deux nefs et trois frégates des vingt-trois embarcations qui avaient quitté Sanlücar deux ans et demi plus tôt, le 25 septembre 1581. Le dommage était considérable. En outre, plusieurs membres de l’expédition manifestaient la peur que leur inspirait le détroit. La relation de Sarmiento traduit la tension qui régnait sur les vaisseaux : — “Senor Capitan, sepa que el diablo, por enganar una anima, no se atreverâà entrar en el Estrecho”.

Les colons qui ont débarqué risquent de manquer de vivres. Sarmiento déclare à ce sujet : — “no tem’amos mantenimiento para cuatro dias, sino harina de raices del Brasil y dos costales de bizcocho”. Les provisions étaient manifestement très insuffisantes pour une telle population qui assura sa subsistance grâce à des racines et des baies sauvages.

Les marins et les pauvres colons — hommes, femmes et enfants, doivent essuyer tout d’abord une furieuse tempête à l’entrée du détroit. On y pénètre enfin et le 5 février l’on parvient à s’approcher de la côte, à vingt-deux lieues de l’embouchure, et l’on débarque vivres et matériel destinés à la première colonie que Sarmiento veut fonder sur ces rivages inhospitaliers. Et l’on prépare la fortification de l’endroit. L’on a repéré cinq sources auprès desquelles vont s’installer, tant bien que mal, trois cents personnes. Les navires essuient une nouvelle tempête et doivent se laisser emporter par les vents et les courants jusqu’à l’embouchure.

Mais Sarmiento ne se décourage pas et décide d’appliquer son plan : il fonde, à une demi-lieue du Cabo de las Virgenes, la ville de Nombre de Jésus. Ce nom aurait-il été choisi pour être le pendant de Nombre de Dios, ville de l’isthme de Panama qui signalait le début de la route traditionnelle du Pérou ?

Comme tout bon fondateur de ville, Sarmiento organise systématiquement sa cité : les indications qu’il donne permettent de se faire une idée précise de la conception urbaniste des Espagnols de l’époque. On choisit d’abord l’emplacement de l’église et l’arbre “d’exécution de la justice”, qui représentent les bases de la société que l’on souhaite établir. Sarmiento participe en personne aux travaux concernant les fondations du maître-autel et, dans la première pierre qui est installée, il insère un parchemin destiné à rappeler à la postérité les circonstances de la création de la ville. On trace ensuite les rues qui se coupent à angle droit puis l’on crée l’entrepôt des vivres et du matériel.

Le jour suivant l’on nomme les édiles. Sarmiento leur soumet les documents officiels qui lui accordent le titre de gouverneur et se fait reconnaître pour tel par les nouveaux responsables de la cité. Ce comportement, habituel — Hernân Cortés n’a-t-il pas agi de même en fondant, en 1519, la Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz? prouve l’importance des municipalités pour les Espagnols du XVIe siècle. Il reste alors à s’occuper des malades qui ne peuvent rechercher la nourriture dont ils ont besoin, et l’on crée un hôpital tandis que les laboureurs, profitant de l’été austral, sèment les premières graines et mettent en terre les plants apportés dans des barils et les arbres que l’on espère voir fructifier. L’opération est menée avec logique : on voit le souci de Sarmiento qui veut réussir sa tentative de colonisation. Le tableau, toutefois, n’est pas aussi idyllique qu’il paraît. La vie n’est pas facile à Nombre de Jésus. Les vivres manquent.

Il faut pourtant assurer la subsistance d’un grand nombre de personnes : on organise la recherche systématique de tous les produits comestibles qui se trouvent dans la contrée. Moules et poissons permettront de tromper la faim qui tenaille les pionniers de cette fragile colonie. La flotte de Diego de la Ribera parvient enfin à rentrer dans le détroit et réapparaît le 13 février 1584. On décide de débarquer le complément de nourriture qui était demeuré à bord du navire Trinidad, entreprise rendue délicate par l’état de la mer.

Le Trinidad finira par s’échouer sur le rivage et l’on récupérera les vingt-deux pièces d’artillerie, les voiles et les plus précieux éléments, comme le bois de la coque.

Sarmiento n’est pas au bout de ses peines. Diego de la Ribera, considérant qu’il a rempli sa mission, décide de rentrer en Espagne et Sarmiento se retrouve isolé dans le détroit. Il ne dispose plus que d’un seul navire, le Maria, après la disparition du Trinidad, mais il fait preuve d’obstination et continue son oeuvre.

On arrive enfin au Cabo de San Gregorio, oùcommence le deuxième passage resserré du détroit, qui n’a qu’une demi-lieue de largeur. Sarmiento présente [très] favorablement la contrée : — Esta tierra, es alegre y fértily muy apacible y de mucha frutilla, asi de las cerezas coloradas, como de uvas de espino y muchos mixillones sabrosos y sustanciosos.

Après avoir installé quatre couleuvrines destinées à défendre la première colonie, il décide d’aller de l’avant pour fonder une deuxième colonie et préparer les fortifications prévues dans la partie la plus resserrée du détroit. Il estime qu’il convient de reconnaître au préalable le littoral et part avec une centaine de soldats par la voie terrestre. Le vaisseau Maria, lui, naviguera jusqu’à l’endroit fixé pour établir les fortifications oùtous devraient se retrouver. Sarmiento quitte donc Nombre de Jésus le 4 mars 1584, plaçant des repères le long de son chemin afin de pouvoir rejoindre la côte en cas de difficulté...

Des Indiens de haute taille circulent dans la région. Une première rencontre permet de constater qu’ils ont déjà eu des rapports avec des Espagnols puisqu’ils connaissent quelques mots : Jésus, Maria, cruz et capitan. Mais ils sont belliqueux et attaquent bientôt les nouveaux venus, tuant un soldat.

Le navire Maria est retrouvé, pour le plus grand soulagement de Sarmiento et de sa troupe. Il est alors temps, après avoir pris officiellement possession du pays, le 25 mars 1584, de choisir l’emplacement de la deuxième colonie. Tout comme il l’avait fait quelques semaines auparavant, le gouverneur organise sa nouvelle ville, qu’il baptise “Rey Don Felipe”, du nom du Roi d’Espagne et du Portugal réunis. Il choisit l’arbre d’exécution de la justice, détermine le lieu oùsera construite la première église nommée “Anunciación de Nuestra Señora», trace les rues qui se coupent à angle droit, et la future place où il fait planter des arbres, établit un entrepôt royal et un hôpital. La ville sera favorisée par un port commode...

Mais le chef ne fait pas l’unanimité et ses déclarations optimistes ne peuvent cacher la réalité : d’aucuns manifestent leur mécontentement, voire leur hostilité. Un certain Antonio Rodriguez organise un soulèvement pour éliminer Sarmiento : il sera exécuté. L’hiver s’abat sur la colonie : il neige durant quinze jours. Rey Don Felipe se trouve dans une situation critique.

Mais Sarmiento s’inquiète aussi de l’état de la première colonie. Il se souvient de la promesse faite de ne pas abandonner les colons de Nombre de Jésus et s’embarque, avec trente hommes, le 25 mai 1584, pour retourner vers le premier établissement.

Le gouverneur ne peut débarquer à cause d’une tempête qui dure plus de vingt jours et le force à se réfugier dans l’Atlantique. Il connaît bien les conditions de navigation dans le détroit et sait qu’il est préférable d’attendre des circonstances plus favorables pour s’approcher de la côte. Comme il est urgent de porter secours aux deux établissements, il décide de mettre le cap sur le Brésil pour aller chercher du ravitaillement.

De Rio de Janeiro, il envoie un navire chargé de farine de manioc et continue vers Pernainbouc pour s’approvisionner en brai. Il obtient le brai dont il a grand besoin et un peu de vin et du tissu pour vêtir ses compagnons exposés aux rigueurs de l’hiver. Mais, estimant que ces provisions ne suffisent pas, il poursuit vers Bahia pour acheter plus de farine, des cuirs et du tissu. Jouant encore de malchance, il ne peut entrer dans le port et fait naufrage durant une tempête, perdant tout ce qu’il avait acheté. Ses efforts prouvent bien qu’il a conscience que la situation peut devenir catastrophique...

Pendant ce temps, dans le détroit, on prévoit des toitures provisoires, faites de branchages, car il y a urgence avec la venue de l’hiver austral... Quelques personnes logeront dans chaque maison. Sarmiento a sagement établi un tirage au sort pour attribuer les logements. On prépare l’emplacement du futur couvent des Franciscains.

La ville Rey Don Felipe devait donc, dans l’esprit de Sarmiento, être plus importante que Nombre de Jésus oùl’on n’avait prévu aucune maison de religieux. On laboure les champs et sème des fèves, des navets, des légumes et quelques grains de blé, mais on attend une époque plus favorable pour ensemencer les champs de maïs. Il est évident que l’on se trompe sur l’avenir de l’agriculture sous ce climat difficile. On prévoit, enfin, de protéger la nouvelle colonie contre de possibles incursions dévastatrices...” (suite en ligne)

Wilhelm (or William) Heine (1827-1885) “Wilhelm (or William) Heine was a German-American artist, world traveller and writer as well as an officer during the American Civil War.

Heine studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Dresden and in the studio of Julius Hübner. Then he continued his artistic studies for three years in Paris. He returned to Dresden getting work as a scene designer for the court theatre and giving painting classes. He fled to New York in 1849, following the suppression of the May Uprising in Dresden in which he participated. In this he was aided by Alexander von Humboldt.

He set up his artist studio at 515 Broadway, and soon established his reputation as an artist. After meeting the archaeologist and diplomat, Ephraim George Squier, Heine was invited to accompany him, as an artist, on his consular duties to Central America. Until Squier arrived, Heine stood in as consul, negotiating a commercial agreement between the Central American countries and the United States, which he delivered to Washington. While in Washington, he met President Millard Fillmore and Commodore Matthew Perry, and was selected from among several scores of applicants for the post of official artist to the Perry expedition to Japan.

Nominally attached to Perry's expedition as an Acting Master's Mate; he served on the flagship USS Mississippi under Sydney Smith Lee. Heine visited Okinawa, the Bonin Islands, Yokohama, Shimoda and Hakodate during 1853 and 1854. The sketches he produced of the places he visited and the people he encountered there, together with the daguerreotypes taken by his colleague Eliphalet Brown Jr., formed the basis of an official iconography of the American expedition to Japan which remains an important record of the country as it was before the foreigners arrived in force.

Upon his return to New York in 1855 he published a collection of prints and his memoirs, which were very successful, and were immediately translated into both French and Dutch.

Going back to Prussia he published a German translation of the report of the Rodgers Expedition and he urged the Prussian government to send more expeditions to Asia before the Americans became established there. This was taken up and while in Berlin he received an invitation to join the Eulenberg Expedition as official artist once again. During this trip he met up with Mikhail Bakunin in Yokohama, following his escape from Siberia.

Learning of the outbreak of the American Civil War; the Forty-Eighter returned and volunteered for the Union Army.

Serving in the Army of the Potomac, Heine was captured during the Peninsula Campaign and briefly was in Libby Prison before being exchanged. In late 1862 he was arrested and accused of revealing too much information of the Union defenses in his drawings. In 1863 he rejoined the army as Colonel of the 103rd New York Infantry, a regiment made up mainly of German-Americans... In 1865 he was made a Brevet Brigadier General but was accused of disobedience and left the army. In the next year he became a U.S. clerk to the Paris and Liverpool consulates.

After the establishment of the Hohenzollern Empire in Germany in 1871, he returned to Dresden where he wrote his last book about Japan, Japan, Beiträge zur Kenntnis des Landes und seiner Bewohner (Berlin, 1873-80).
