Before the Assault, Preparation of the Trojan Horse in Choisy-le-Roi. Several reporters were present in Choisy-le-Roi, South of Paris on 28 April 1912 (more will be present a few days later for the final assault of the surviving members of the Bonnot gang).

The compositions in this series are different from the famous Agence Rol reportage, and seem more friendly with the police, indicating a Bertillon team photographer.

The e-bulletin presents articles as well as selections of books, albums, photographs and documents as they have been handed down to the actual owners by their creators and by amateurs from past generations.

The physical descriptions, attributions, origins, and printing dates of the books and photographs have been carefully ascertained by collation and through close analysis of comparable works.

The Bonnot Gang Bonnot was born on October 14, 1876 in Doubs Department, France. As a teenager, Bonnot served time in prison on two occasions (the latter, for assaulting a police officer) and was compelled to leave his work at the factory after being accused of stealing copper shavings.

At the age of 21, Bonnot was conscripted for service in France's infantry, where he served three years as a truck auto mechanic. An excellent rifleman, Bonnot left the army as a corporal first class.

In 1908, Bonnot began to associate with anarcho-individualists involved in counterfeiting.

Along with several Italians, he began forging ten-franc pieces and carrying out minor thefts and burglaries. Eventually, using Bonnot's automotive skill, they progressed to the theft of luxury-cars in France and Switzerland.

In December 1911, having moved to Paris to avoid arrest, Bonnot joined a criminal anarchist affinity group led by Octave Garnier. On December 21, the gang made national news when they robbed a messenger of the Société Générale Bank in broad daylight and then fled in a limousine (the first ever criminal use of a "get-away" car).

They were branded "les bandits en auto" by the press and a wave of panic swept the nation.

Although Bonnot was never the leader of the group, the gang was dubbed the "Bonnot Gang" by the press after Bonnot appeared, armed with a Browning automatic, in the office of the Le Petit Parisien to file a complaint about the daily paper's coverage of the group. Bonnot was quoted as having stated, "We'll burn off our last round against the cops, and if they don't care to come, we'll certainly know how to find them."

This show of bravado coupled with the gang's criminal activities led to a general state of hysteria within middle-class French society.

In an effort to escape capture, the gang split up in April 1912.

On April 24, three police officers surprised Bonnot in the apartment of a suspected fence. He shot at the officers, killing one and wounding another, and then fled over the rooftops. Part of the 100,000 francs reward was later given to the widow of the killed police officer (Louis Jouin, the vice-chief of the French National Police).

On April 28, police tracked Bonnot (now France's "most wanted" criminal) to a house in the Paris suburb of Choisy-le-Roi. They besieged the residence with 500 armed police officers, soldiers, firemen, military engineers and an impressive lynch mob of local citizens.

The building had only one entrance so it was possible for Bonnot to keep the police at bay.

Armed with three Brownings and a Bayard pistol, Bonnot succeeded in wounding three police officers...

They besieged the place with 500 armed police officers, soldiers (with one brand new Hotchkiss machine gun), firefighters, military engineers and private gun-owners.

By noon, after a sporadic firing from both sides, Paris Police Chief Louis Lépine sent three police officers hidden on a horse-carriage to put a dynamite charge under the house. The explosion demolished the front of the building and killed Dubois.

Barely conscious, lying underneath a mattress, Bonnot was shot ten times in the upper-body before Lépine shot him non-fatally in the head.

Afterwards police again had to prevent the spectators from lynching Bonnot. They simply told the crowd that Bonnot was already dead and had been buried in a secret grave.

Bonnot was moved to the Hotel-Dieu and pronounced dead at 1:15 PM. He was buried in an unmarked grave and police refused to release his last will and testament.

On the evening of May 14, Octave Garnier and Rene Valet were besieged in the Paris suburb of Nogent-sur-Marne by a large force including 300 police officers and gendarmes and 800 soldiers. Sûreté Chief Xavier Guichard himself led the siege. The firing from both sides was intense, and at 2 AM, Guichard decided to blow the place up. Garnier died in the explosion, but Valet tried to keep firing despite his wounds.

The trial of the Gang's survivors began on February 3, 1913. Victor Serge was sentenced to five years for robbery. All the others were initially sentenced to death. The sentence of Eugène Dieudonné was commuted to life imprisonment. Sentences of Édouard Carouy and Marius Metge were commuted to life imprisonment at hard labor. Carouy later committed suicide.

Metge was sent to a penal colony. Raymond Caillemin, Étienne Monier and André Soudy refused to plead for clemency and they were executed by guillotine.

In the aftermath of the collapse of the Bonnot Gang, French authorities used the threat of anarchist violence as the pretext for a substantial expansion in law enforcement power.

Hundreds of raids were carried out against known anarchists and sympathizers (similar in scale to the Palmer Raids in the United States). Although the actions of the gang were not widely supported, even within the anarchist milieu, the mainstream press called for a general crackdown on left-wing revolutionary activity.

Although demonized by large sections of French society, Bonnot's death was mourned by those sympathetic to individualist anarchism.

The French movie "La Bande à Bonnot" (1968; "Bonnot's Gang") is loosely based on the gang's escapades. Jacques Brel produced the soundtrack with François Rauber. FRENCH DETECTIVE BUREAU. Jules Dubois is Dead, Choisy-le-Roy, 28 April 1912 Vintage silver print, 80x115 mm.

Corpse of Jean Jules Dubois, born 13 February 1870 in Golta in the province of Odessa. After performing his service in the Foreign Legion, he worked as a laborer for Puteaux automobile manufacturers. In 1902, he founded a mechanical workshop in Courbevoie. In 1908, he was the subject of a judicial inquiry for breach of trust, and entered into relations with the Bonnot gang. He stole in Lyon an automobile which is brought to Choisy-le-Roi in his garage to be sold. It is this garage where Jules Bonnot took refuge.

La fin de la Bande à Bonnot et l’assaut du garage Dubois à Choisy le Roi (extraits des deux remarquables textes de Crimino Corpus et de L’atelier Ted et eux)

La collaboration, directe ou indirecte, observée entre policiers et gendarmes trouve son aboutissement dans la prise du fortin de Choisy-le-Roi – où se sont réfugiés Jules Bonnot et le garagiste libertaire Jules Dubois –, le dimanche 28 avril 1912.

Fait notable, l’élimination de Bonnot permet au commissaire de police de Choisy d’associer dans le même éloge l’héroïsme d’un de ses hommes et celui d’un gendarme pour l’obtention d’une décoration : « J’ai l’honneur de signaler tout particulièrement […] la conduite du sergent de ville Leroux, de mon commissariat et du maréchal des logis Blanchard de la résidence de Choisy-le-Roi […]. Le sergent de ville Leroux a essuyé le feu du nommé Dubois qui a tiré sur lui par quatre fois ; il a riposté mais sans résultat appréciable […]. Le maréchal des logis de gendarmerie Blanchard s’est maintenu constamment, et dès le début de l’investissement, sur la ligne de tir. En effet, M. Blanchard est arrivé sur les lieux alors que le nombre des agents était encore insuffisant pour empêcher la fuite du né Bonnot […] » . Réciproquement, un officier de la Garde républicaine – le lieutenant Fontan, qui fut un protagoniste déterminant de l’attaque – félicite un policier pour son courage : « Monsieur le Préfet, Usant de la bienveillance que vous m’avez témoigné le matin du 28 à Choisy-le-Roi, je prends la liberté de signaler à votre attention la conduite de l’agent Gamarre de la 1ère Compagnie de réserve.

Cet agent qui s’est offert dès le premier instant pour porter les matelas que je voulais employer comme protection a essayé ensuite de pousser la petite charrette à bras où les matelas étaient placés et n’a reculé que sur votre ordre. […] je serais heureux de le voir associer aux marques de sympathie que j’ai reçues de votre part » .

Quelque s jours plus tôt, le mercredi 24 avril 1912 au matin, sur la foi des adresses trouvées sur les lettres saisies dans la chambre de Monier, le sous-chef de la sûreté Louis Jouin se rend d'abord avec quatre policiers à Maisons-Alfort, rue Eugène Renault, pour interroger un certain Cardi. Mais l'homme n'est pas chez lui. Les cinq hommes repartent alors pour Ivry, au 63 avenue de Paris (devenue Maurice Thorez), là où se trouve la boutique de vêtements tenue par Etienne Gauzy.

On lui montre un portrait de Monier, qu'il reconnaît de mauvaise grâce, puis de Bonnot, qu'il dit ne pas connaître. Jouin décide de perquisitionner la maison et s'engage sur l'escalier menant au 1er étage... Il fait très sombre car les volets sont fermés. Le temps de laisser ses yeux s'habituer à l'obscurité, Jouin distingue dans la dernière pièce une forme humaine tapie dans l'ombre. Il pousse un cri : «Mais c'est Bonnot !».

Jouin et le policier Colmar sautent sur Bonnot. S'ensuit une furieuse mêlée dans l'encoignure de la porte. Mais au moment où ils vont avoir le dessus, Bonnot réussit à sortir son Browning de sa poche et tire quatre fois. La première balle rate sa cible, deux autres balles explosent la tête du malheureux Jouin. Colmar est grièvement blessé par la dernière ... Apercevant Jouin et Bonnot inertes par terre, le policier Robert les croit tous les deux morts. Il redescend son collègue blessé pour qu'on lui prodigue des soins urgents. Mais quand il remonte dans la chambre où s'est joué le drame, Bonnot a disparu ! Bonnot, bien que blessé au bras par un de ses propres tirs, s'est finalement relevé sans bruit. Il a bondi sur le palier vers un appartement voisin. Là, Il oblige une voisine curieuse qui regarde par sa porte à lui laisser le passage, sous la menace de son arme. Puis il est passé par la fenêtre ouverte, s'est accroché aux persiennes pour sauter sur le toit d'une cabane. Il a ensuite suivi la crête d'un mur, puis s'est laissé glisser sur le sentier des Bossettes où il a disparu vers les “fortifs” de Paris.

Dehors, la foule se déchaîne et des justiciers d'occasion tabassent Gauzy qui vient d'être rattrapé par les policiers après avoir tenté de s'enfuir... Dans la chambre au 1er étage, Bertillon arrive avec ses équipes et n'a plus qu'à faire ses habituels relevés et des photos du cadavre de Jouin. Le brigadier Colmar, va s'en sortir.

Les policiers, menés désormais par Guichard, le supérieur de Jouin décédé, recueillent des renseignements d'indicateurs qui les mènent vers Choisy-le-Roi. Le dimanche 28 avril, à 7 heures du matin, un premier détachement de policiers se présente devant le garage Fromentin, 8 rue Jules Vallès. L'information est bonne : ils aperçoivent Bonnot en train de préparer une moto. Bonnot les repère lui aussi et monte se barricader à l'étage.

Les policiers battent prudemment en retraite. Le bâtiment est facile à cerner : il est isolé au milieu du lotissement d’Eugène Fromentin, milliardaire professant des idées anarchistes*.

A 8 heures, Guichard arrive avec les premiers renforts. On entoure le garage et le chef de la Sûreté se présente à la porte. Cette fois, il est armé et ceint de son écharpe tricolore. Il tombe sur le locataire des lieux, Jean Dubois, qui sort un browning. Plus rapide que lui, Guichard fait feu et le tue. Les policiers, qui se méfient avec raison de Bonnot, font à nouveau retraite, mais Bonnot leur tire dessus depuis l'étage où il s'est réfugié. Il blesse deux agents. On téléphone alors au préfet Lépine, qui envoie de nouveaux renforts. Dantesque et grotesque à la fois, le siège de Choisy va pouvoir commencer. Il va durer quatre heures.

Autour du bâtiment, une foule immense -des milliers de personnes- commence à s'assembler.

Certains jouent à la petite guerre, cachés derrière les arbres ou les fossés, fusil de chasse en main, bravoure affectée et bêtise en bandoulière. D'autres se massent contre le cordon des gardes et s'invectivent entre eux pour prendre ou conserver les meilleures places.

Colette, accourue en hâte de Paris, se fait insulter car son chapeau trop large masque la vue des derniers rangs. Pendant qu'on prépare l'assaut final, à l'intérieur du bâtiement, Bonnot se désintéresse totalement de la situation et commence à rédiger son testament...

* Le garage Dubois et le lotissement Fromentin Alfred, Pierre Formentin (1858-1917). Après avoir travaillé à Caracas dans les années 1890 comme chef de poste de la société des câbles téléphoniques Alfred Fromentin avait été embauché à son retour à Paris comme directeur des ventes pour le compte du photographe Charles Ogereau dont il épousa la sœur.

Possesseur d’une fortune rondelette – il était surnommé l’anarchiste milionnaire - et acquise sans doute par "escroqueie aux Assurances" (les incendies de plusieurs de ses villas entre 1901 et 1906 lui ayant permis de toucher d’importantes primes), Alfred Fromentin était lié au mouvement anarchiste au début du XXè siècle. En 1902 il collaborait au journal L’Indiscutable (Royan, au moins 50 numéros en 1902). En 1904 il avait fondé avec son beau-frère le photographe Charles Ogereau,le journal Le Balai Social (Mantes, 25 numéros du 15 décembre 1904 au 15 janvier 1906) organe individualiste sous-titré «tribune libre à tous les protestataires de l’arrondissement de Mantes» tiré à 1.000 exemplaires. Il collabora au début des années 1910 à l’organe individualiste de Lorulot L’idée Libre ainsi qu’à la revue d’E. Armand L’Ere Nouvelle (Paris-Orléans, 1901-1911).

Sur un terrain de 150.000 mètres carrés qu’il possédait à Choisy, il fit construire un lotissement de plusieurs villas - Le Nid rouge - portant les noms de Kropotkine, Louise Michel, Elisée Reclus, etc et d’un garage tenu par Jules Dubois. En 1912 ses locaux de Choisy le Roi furent utilisés par le groupe d’illégalistes de Jules Bonnot et notamment le garage où furent tués Bonnot et Garnier le 28 avril 1912 Fromentin qui n’était pas présent lors de ces faits, ne fut pas inquiété.

La mort dans la pauvreté d’Alfred Fromentin est annoncée par Ce Qu’il Faut Dire le 10 novembre 1917. Œuvres : - "Cartouche, Mandrin et Cie" ; - Dégénérés sociaux (Ed. de l’Idée libre, 1913).
