soviet photographer. marshal budyonny’ young supporters, 1920s Three (3) vintage silver prints, 85x115 and 60x90 mm. “Semyon Budyonny (1883-1973) was born into a poor peasant family near the town of Bolshaya Orlovka, near Rostov... He worked as a farm laborer, shop errand boy, blacksmith's apprentice, and driver of a steam-driven threshing machine, until the autumn of 1903, when he was drafted into the Imperial Russian Army. Budyonny joined the Bolshevik party in 1919, and formed close relationships with Joseph Stalin and Klim Voroshilov. Budyonny was considered a courageous and colorful cavalry officer, but displayed disdain for innovation and a profound ignorance of modern warfare, particularly the impact of tanks, which he saw as "incapable of ever replacing cavalry". During Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky's Great Purge trial (1937) he stated that Tukhachevsky's efforts to create an independent tank corps was so inferior to horse cavalry and so illogical that it amounted to deliberate "wrecking". To this denouncement, the doomed Tukhachevsky (considered a pioneering innovator in tank warfare) blankly replied — I feel I'm dreaming.

In July–September 1941, Budyonny was Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet armed forces of the Southwestern and Southern Fronts facing the German invasion of Ukraine. This invasion began as part of Germany's Operation Barbarossa which was launched on June 22. Operating under strict orders from Stalin to not retreat under any circumstances, Budyonny's forces were surrounded during the Battle of Uman and the Battle of Kiev. The disasters which followed the encirclement cost the Soviet Union 1.5 million men killed or taken prisoner. This was one of the largest encirclements in military history... Despite being blamed by Stalin for some of the Soviet Union's most catastrophic World War II defeats (although acting on Stalin's specific orders), he continued to enjoy Stalin's patronage and suffered no real punishment. After the war he was allowed to retire as a Hero of the Soviet Union” (wikipedia). (3) € 300

soviet photographer. Long Life to Chinese Revolution !, moscow, 1925 Vintage silver print, 110x162 mm, captioned on mount : “1925” . “The 1925 May Thirtieth Movement ( 五卅运动;) was a major labor and anti-imperialist movement during the middle-period of the Republic of China. It began when Shanghai Municipal Police officers opened fire on Chinese protesters in Shanghai's International Settlement on May 30, 1925. The shootings sparked international censure and nationwide anti-foreign demonstrations and riots... Alongside public grief at the recent death of China's Republican hero Sun Yat-sen (12 March 1925), the KMT sought to foment anti-imperial and anti-western organizations and propaganda within major Chinese cities... In the early months of 1925 conflicts and strikes on these matters intensified. Japanese owned cotton mills were a source of contention... In February, a group of Japanese managers were attacked while leaving work and one of them was killed. In response Japanese foremen took to carrying pistols while on duty. On May 15, during a violent Neo-Luddite-style riot inside the mill, a Japanese foreman shot a demonstrator named Ku Chen-Hung dead. Over the following weeks Ku Chen-Hung became viewed as a martyr by Chinese unions and student groups...” € 200
