WHERE THE ORDINARY BECOMES EXTRAORDINARY
LONGYEARBYEN LONGYEARBYEN, THE ADMINISTRATIVE HOME SEAT IN SVALBARD IS A SMALL ARCTIC METROPOL WITH A POPULATION OF 2100 PEOPLE FROM OVER 40 NATIONS. THE SOCIETY IS CHARACTERIZED BY ACTIVE PEOPLE, LIVING IN CLOSE SOLIDARITY IN TOUGH CONDITIONS IN THE WILDERNESS OF THE HIGH ARCTIC.
Over 100 years of mining has given the city a rough, industrial appearance. Tourism, research / teaching and mining are the main activities today, together with community support. Among other things, there are university center, school, 3 kindergartens, sportarenas, church and cultural center. It is pitch dark at Svalbard in 4 months through what is called ”the polar night”, while summer is marked by months of ”the nightsun” when the sun is high in the sky 24 hours a day. This leaves its mark on Longyearbyen, where activities and daily life are happily governed by the season. In the bright period, people are much outdoors, while the city in the dark season gets its own pulse, where locals and guests get extra social. They often meet on festivals, concerts, sporting events, etc. - or over a good meal in one of the many great restaurants! Life at 78 degrees north is something else, but also filled with completely ordinary weekdays for those who live here. For all who visit us they experience our everyday life as something extraordinary. Polar bears are never far away, ergo weapons is a necessity. The climate is harsh and unpredictable, while the alternating light / darkness is perceived differently from person to person. We welcome you to Longyearbyen - and hope you find yourself comfortable as a guest here with us!

FACTS ABOUT SVALBARD The Svalbard archipelago with its 61,000 km² is located at 74º - 81º N and 10º - 35º E. The main islands are: Spitsbergen, Nordaustlandet, Barents Island, Edge Island and Prins Karls Forland. The archipelago is administered by Norway and regulated by the Svalbard Treaty. There are several settlements on Spitsbergen and Longyearbyen is the Norwegian headquarter with approximately 2,100 inhabitants. About 200 of these commute to the mining community of Svea. In Ny-Ålesund, which is an international research center, there are approximately 25-100 inhabitants (depending on the season). Barentsburg is the center of Russian mining activities and has about 350 residents. In addition, Poland has a research station in Hornsund with 10-12 residents . There are no roads connecting the settlements.
BRIEF HISTORY In 1194, «Svalbarði fundinn» was listed in Icelandic writings and Svalbard was referred to as ”the land of the cold coasts”. After Willem Barents discovered Svalbard in 1596 international whaling activity was established (1600-1750), Russian winter hunting (1700-1850) and Norwegian winter hunting (1850-1973). In 1906 the American John M. Longyear established the first mine and gave name to Longyearbyen. In 1916, Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani took over the mining operations in Longyearbyen. In 1920 almost 40 countries signed the Svalbard Treaty and Norway got sovereignty in 1925. It was in 2002 created an expanded local representative for a model adapted to local conditions. Responsibility for social services and administrative tasks were simultaneously transferred from the state to the politically elected body - Longyearbyen Community. VISIT SVALBARD 2015 - 2017

Its stated that ”the sun is declared back in Longyearbyen when the rays reaches the stairs.” Solfestuka offers art exhibitions, concerts, cabarets, lectures, solar arrangement and drawing contest for children, exhibition and outdoor church, suncafè, sunquiz and sun-games.
DARK SEASON BLUES www.svalbardblues.com The world’s northernmost blues festival! The entrance to the dark season with its blue light is perfect for the blue tones and gives a unique feeling. There are four great days with local, Norwegian and international blues artists spread across most of Longyearbyen’s consert-stages.

This creates unforgettable memories and a lot of guests is coming back year after year. www.svalbardblues.com
POLAR JAZZ The world’s northernmost jazz festival at 78 °N! Polar Jazz was started by a couple of jazz enthusiasts in 1997, and since 1998 the northernmost jazz festival has been held in Longyearbyen the first weekend of February each year. This is an unique music festival that residents, visiting audience, and not to mention artists, greatly appreciate. The Polar Jazz is not only adapted to a jazz-oriented audience, but is an offer of varied musical experiences in the polar night for both children and adults, in Longyearbyen and also in Barentsburg. In addition the festival engages a wide range of local musicians and others who start the festival with a great music afterparty the day before the festival start. www.polarjazz.no
OKTOBERFEST The world’s northernmost Octoberparty! You dont have to go to Germany to drink taxfree golden pints! Taste your way through an extensive range of foaming varieties, naturally accompanied by ”oompah” music.
SPITSBERGEN MARATHON Spitsbergen Marathon is an attractive race for both Norwegian and international long distance runners. First weekend in June each year, runners from 20 different nations participate in the world’s northernmost marathon.
The world’s northernmost cross country ski tournament with armed polar bear guards!
More information can be found here:
Simultaneously with Spitsbergen Marathon is the ”Labb & Line” run for kids. This is the most important race for children in Longyearbyen. More information on Spitsbergen Marathon can be found on Svalbard Turns website
Svalbard Marathon offers an Arctic and spectacular end to the ski season last weekend in April each year. You can choose between half marathon exercise, half marathon youth, Maraton exercise and Marathon with timekeeping. All classes in classic style. Svalbard Marathon was first held in 1993, and today it is the single biggest event on Svalbard. The organizer, the local sports club Svalbard Turn, annually provides good experiences in winter sports. The trails have a vertical drop of approximately 400 meters. Due to the changing weather and the danger of polar bears, safety is given special attention. Patrolling polar bear guards on snowmobiles make the participation a memory for life. More information about Svalbard Skimaraton at the Svalbard Turn website.

The Oktoberfest takes place every year in late September. Then it is hops, malted grains and music all three days to the end, at the northernmost Octoberparty. Here you can taste at least 80 types of beer - a choice that does not exist elsewhere in Norway. Since the first Oktoberfest in 2009 the festival has expanded with bigger tents and a wider selection of beer and food. Wonderful performing bands are entertaining, and there is a competition to find this year’s mustache and Miss Oktoberfest. The food is main focus, and we serve lamb in cabbage (fårikål) on ”fårikål day” and serve beermakers-dinner, offering food cooked with beer.
One can choose between marathon, half marathon and The Spitsbergen Mile. The marathon trail is two equal rounds of half marathon. The surface is gravel and asphalt.
SVALBARD SKI MARATHON
Spitsbergen Marathon starts in the center of Longyearbyen. The run is proceeding in a landscape characterized by arctic nature and past mining. Safety is a priority due to the risk of meeting polar bears during the race. Patrolling Polar Bear Guards on ATV’s is an exotic reason to participate in Spitsbergen Marathon.

LIGHT WINTER (MARCH TO MAY)
SUMMER (JUNE-AUGUST)
As the light returns, the activity level and energy increases – you want to get out, to see and experience! March through May is an exciting time on Svalbard. The days are getting longer and at the end of April, the midnight sun is shining while the landscape still have its winter-suit on. Migrants return and mountain sides are filled with bustling life and the seals enjoy the sunrays on the sea ice. In front of spectacular blue-green glaciers there is room for contemplation. This invites to outdoor activities and wilderness adventures.
The snow disappears, small flowers blossom and a rush of bird activity replaces the quiet of winter. It’s summer on Svalbard. Mountains, valleys, glaciers, sea, flowers, animals and birds attract you to adventures you will never forget. Summer in the Arctic is short and hectic. Even with daylight around the clock, the day is not long enough to enjoy it all.

WINTER AND POLAR NIGHT (NOVEMBER TO FEBRUARY)
The landscape dresses in autumn clothes when orange colors cover valleys and mountains while the soil slowly freezes over again. The temperature drops to zero degrees. Gradually, the days are getting shorter and one beautiful morning you wake up and see that snow resembling ”sugar powder” is sprinkled over the mountain peaks. A hike at this time of year leaves everlasting impressions. Frozen topsoil is easy to walk on, the air is crystal clear and a red-orange evening sun deliveres the finishing touch.
In late October, the sun casts its last rays over the landscape this year, and Svalbard enters the dark period. For more than two months, from mid-November to early February, the darkness is around the clock. On days with good weather, full moon, starry and dancing northern lights, you will still be able to experience the particular blue light that characterize the polar night. The month of February is perhaps the most beautiful month of the year. Winter night gives way to the rising sun, longer and longer each day that passes. On a clear day, the skies many blue shades mixed with pinkish tinge - and then one day, the first pink rays reaches the mountain peaks. Later the sun starts gently down into the valleys and the light returns. At this time of year Svalbard is filled with a unique atmosphere and ambience that must be experienced. MINE 3 Mine 3 is located in the hillside above the airport in Longyearbyen. The operation of the mine was completed in November 1996, but parts of the plant are now left open and accessible to the public. Initially it is a day-resort with workshops, coal dump and so forth, that visitors and residents can experience. Little has changed in nearly 20 years. It is as if time stood still in the very special structure, especially designed for the activity here. Coal was discovered in Mine 3 in 1928, but the preparation for mining was not begun until 1969. The mine was in full production from 1972. Working height of the mine could be only 70 centimeters. Nevertheless, it produced as much as 160,000 tons of coal a year. USEFUL INFORMATION SHOES
BLOOD ALCOHOL LIMIT In Svalbard the same rules apply as on the mainland. When driving a vehicle or snowmobile, the blood alcohol limit is 0.2.
RIVERS The water flow in the rivers is often very heavy from June to August. Rivers grow rapidly after precipitation and snowmelt. They are often broad, icy and difficult to pass.
There is a tradition in Svalbard to take off their shoes when entering private houses, hotels and some shops and offices. This tradition goes back to when the coal mines were right in center of town. To avoid dragging coal dust into the houses, the shoes were taken off. It may therefore be advisable to bring indoor shoes or warm socks when traveling to Svalbard.
INTERNAL TRANSPORT
FOOTWEAR There is plenty of uneven terrain on Svalbard, sturdy shoes and hiking boots is advised. In addition, there is a lot of snow and ice in the summer, which leads to huge rivers and streams and much wetland. Rubber boots can be very useful during this period. In wintertime warm footwear is recommended.

PLANTS
AROUND 60% OF SVALBARD’S LAND AREA IS COVERED BY A VARIETY OF SMALL AND LARGE GLACIERS. ONLY 7.6% OF LAND AREA IS COVERED BY VEGETATION.
The most fertile areas are found in the inner fjord regions of Spitsbergen. In Svalbard there is permafrost, and only the top meter of earth thawing during the summer. The flora is characterized by short growing season, low temperature, low rainfall and nutrient-poor soils. Nevertheless, there are a multitude of small plants on Svalbard, and only around Longyearbyen there is registered over 100 different species. Totally in Svalbard there are about 170 plant species. The plant life is very fragile and this should be taken into account when exploring the nature. Destruction of vegetation can leave permanent traces in the terrain. All vegetation is protected. Feel free to photograph Svalbard’s colorful flora, but please do not pick it.

BIRDS AND ANIMALS
THE BARENTS SEA NURTURES MOST OF ANIMAL LIFE ON SVALBARD. Thanks to the Gulf Stream with a mix of hot and cold water, the shallow seabed and intense solar radiation in the summer ensures this Arctic offshore a relatively high production. Here one finds the largest seabird colonies in the North Atlantic region with millions of pairs of the most common nesting species, namely auk, kittiwake and fulmar. On the coast of Svalbard and the tundra in the large valleys you will find large populations of geese and waders. Eider ducks nest around the archipelago. Most of the birds on Svalbard are migratory birds that overwinter in the Barents Sea and along the coast of Norway or on the continent. Svalbard ptarmigan is the only bird species that dont pull away from the archipelago in winter. Around 30 bird species hedge on Svalbard. The Svalbard reindeer and Arctic fox are the only land mammals that are native to Svalbard. These can be seen over most of the archipelago. In addition vole has come to Isfjorden, probably by boats. There are several species of seal around Svalbard, among others ringed seals, bearded seals, harbor seals and walrus. By whale species frequently visiting the coasts of Svalbard, the White Whale is the most numerous. Altogether there are 19 different species of marine mammals in the waters around Svalbard.
POLAR BEARS The polar bear is considered a marine mammal as it spends most of its life on the sea ice. Mostly it can be found on the surrounding islands east of Spitsbergen, yet you can meet the bear anywhere in Svalbard. They give birth to their cubs in snow caves on land and the young bears walk with their mothers until they are about 2 years old. It feeds mainly on ringed seals, which is the most common seal species in the waters around Svalbard. It is illegal to disturb, capture, injure or kill animals and birds. All birds are protected during the breeding season, eggs, nests and dens are also listed. One should never touch a dead animal when it is proven rabies (hydrophobia) on Svalbard. Polar bears are totally protected and it is prohibited to lure, pursue, seek out or disturb it so it can be a risk to people or the polar bear itself.
