SVEN ANDERS HEDIN Catalogue of a Private Collection

This catalogue documents one of the largest and most important privately held collections of the published works by and materials relating to the famed Swedish explorer, geographer, scientist, artist and writer, Sven Anders Hedin (1865–1952). The collection comprises over 400 volumes of Hedin’s major works, including narratives of Hedin’s travels in Tibet, Ladakh, East Turkestan (Xinjiang), Mongolia, Persia and other regions, as well as more than 200 secondary works. The collection also includes Hedin’s main scientific works, maps, political writings and prose. The collection is distinguished by a number of first editions published in English, German and Swedish. Many of the works are extremely rare. The collection also holds bibliographical materials and correspondence as well as selected Hediniana and ephemera. These include colourboard Kaffeekarten (“coffee card”) pictures, photographs, Chinese and Swedish commemorative stamps, and original pen and ink drawings by Hedin, several of which appear in the American edition of his autobiography My Life as an Explorer. The collection has been painstakingly assembled over several decades by a well-known private European collector based in Asia. The collection is maintained in Hong Kong under strict climate-controlled conditions. The collection is now being offered for sale as a whole through Serindia Gallery. His last journey to Lop-nor was in 1934, just days after he was released as a prisoner of General Ma Chung-ying (“Big Horse”, the rebel leader of Xinjiang).
