Parkleigh Enterprises
“Have fun, feel good, buy stuff”
Parkleigh Enterprises in Rochester NY has been an Avanti customer since 1985. The 6,500-square-foot store differentiates itself by creating an experience that people return to again and again. The store has extensive collection of unique gift and home products presented in creative ways. “From the moment you walk in we create what I can only describe as pleasurable sensory overload,” Manager Daniel Mejak says. “From the personal attention to the delicious scents, you immediately feel like you are somewhere special.” Parkleigh has thrived during the down economy by doing what it does best. “As society has become more technically overloaded, everyone is moving so fast. Nowadays our shoppers want one of two things: To quickly find what they’re looking for, make an efficient purchase and get back to their busy day, or to escape from the world and lose themselves a little by strolling through our store, making spontaneous discoveries, maybe working on their wish list. A big part of the customer experience for us is our ability to read our customers and adapt to their needs, whether they are moving fast or trying to slow down. Avanti does what we do – it entertains,
makes you smile, maybe gives a giggle, yet it’s still able to touch your heart and make for a memorable experience. The fact that Avanti offers so many cards in an abbreviated footprint is incredibly valuable. To put 192 cards in-line takes up so much space, but our spinner from Avanti does that in much less, and makes it kind of fun, too! When one person is spinning a tower, it often attracts someone nearby and gets them involved in shopping the display. It is definitely a trend-setting display. Presenting new ideas like this is one thing we’ve come to rely on Avanti for over the years!
Daniel’s favorite card is 02223 (and 02002). “I’ve given both of these cards to friends several times this year and they always get a reaction. Pet Sympathy is such a crucial and difficult card to pick, and Avanti has found a way to be responsible to the seriousness of the topic yet keep it on brand and fitting in with all the other humor cards.”
We have the A*Press line on our 192 pocket display. People like the unique, hand-made look, and they are drawn to more thoughtful cards. They are both clever and pretty. Overall I enjoy having Avanti in the store because it needs attention every month. Sometimes you bring in an exciting new card line and it sells well, but after six or seven months it just doesn’t hold the interest it initially did. Avanti is one of our strongest lines, it keeps selling for us year after year.”

AJ’s, a premium market for A*Press AJ’s Fine Foods is small chain of gourmet grocery stores selling Avanti in 10 locations throughout the metro Phoenix area. Their #1 location on Lincoln Drive in Scottsdale has been selling Avanti since 2004 and A*Press since early 2008. Service is Everything. David Grady manages the “a la carte” section of this store, with responsibilities for a wide range of non-food products, including greeting cards. He attributes the store’s success to the company’s ethic for customer service: “We’re a destination gourmet food store, and what sets us apart is our customer service. We have great rapport with our regular shoppers, and know many of them by name. I think the personal interaction our customers receive makes it a better experience and keeps them coming back.” Looking for Quality. During the economic downturn, AJ’s had the luxury of its prime location to protect it from sales declines. However, they did observe changes in customer behavior. “People really started caring more about the quality of the products and the value they were receiving. They wanted to know what they were getting for the money.”
David’s favorite A*Press card is the “You Still Rock” card (05296)
A*Press to the Rescue. “When Avanti came out with A*Press it was great for us,” David relates. “People see the same thing over and over, so it’s nice to see something new. A*Press was like having a
new line that provided exceptional quality, still at an affordable price.” Frozen Foods? A*Press was originally displayed in a wide aisle between frozen food coolers. Nan Frisch, who represents Avanti in the Phoenix area, was astounded by the activity on the display in that location. “The first time I serviced the A*Press display in the frozen foods aisle, half the pockets were empty, and that was just 30 days after we set up the display!” Front and Center. While its frozen food card department performed well, the A*Press cards were moved with other lines to front of store about a year ago to keep things fresh. “We moved it up front a year ago, and it was insane!” David reports. “You would see people milling around in the card section, buying 10 cards at a time! Before people would ask ‘where are your cards’ but now they see them right when they walk in. Having more space to browse is also conducive. They really sell when you have them up front.” Bottom Line: A*Press is the perfect complement for AJ’s and earns its keep year after year, no matter where it is located in the store!
