Liturgy for Public Worship on the Lord’s Day Morning D.V. Sunday, July 21, 2013 10 a.m.
Liturgy for the Lord’s Day Morning Sunday, July 21, 2013 About This Worship Service: This is a joint worship service of the Free Reformed Church of Heidelberg, the conference host, and the guests of this year’s Heidelberg Conference on Reformed Theology. Officiating minister is Dr. Jon D. Payne, Pastor of Christ Church Presbyterian (PCA) in Charleston, SC, a recent church plant. Dr. Joel R. Beeke will be preaching the Word of God from the Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 1. Dr. Beeke is president of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids/U.S.A. and a pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids. Since the conference is a celebration of the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism, the worship service will follow very closely the liturgy of the Reformed church in the Palatinate of the 16th century, including some of the set prayers.
»To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.« (Eph. 3:21)
»Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!« (Amos 4:12)

Prayer of Illumination Catechism Reading Q: »What is your only comfort in life and death?« A: »That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for Him.« Q: »What do you need to know in order to live and die in the joy of this comfort?« A: »First, how great my sins and misery are; second, how I am delivered from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to be thankful to God for such deliverance.«

Public Confession of Sin:
Palatinate Liturgy
All: »I poor sinner, acknowledge before thee, my God and Creator, that I have grievously and in manifold ways sinned against thee, not only with gross outward transgressions, but much more with inward natural blindness, unbelief, doubts, despondency, impatience, pride, evil covetousness, secret envy, hatred, malice, and other sinful affections: as thou my Lord and God well knowest, and I, alas ! cannot deeply enough deplore. But I repent of these things, and am sorry for them, and heartily beseech thee for mercy, for the sake of thy beloved Son Jesus Christ. Amen.«
Absolution Confession of Faith:
Palatinate Liturgy Apostle’s Creed
All: »I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen«

You answered me the day I called; you made me bold and valiant-hearted. You heard me in my darkest hour and by your power was I supported. Now let the kings of all the earth in awe shout forth their praise unbroken, for peoples everywhere, O LORD, have heard the words that you have spoken.
