Creating opportunity

Kantha is a type of embroidery where sheets of fabric are joined together with a simple yet attractive running stitch. Unique combinations of fabric are selected by the artisans for a beautiful burst of color and contrast, and each kantha stitch is done by hand. No two pieces are ever alike. Our festive kantha textiles are made with recycled cotton saris, the traditional garments commonly worn by women in India. Many of the women who create these blankets live in rural areas where opportunities for a steady income are scarce. Through fair trade, they are given the opportunity for reliable work. The women often work from home so they can care for their families while earning a viable income.

Providing employment

Shesham wood carvings are a lasting tradition in India, especially in the northern city of Saharanpur. The craft originated in Pakistan and migrated to Saharanpur more than 200 years ago. The twelve artisans who are employed at the workshop that creates many of Serrv’s puzzle boxes are proud to work at a safe place where they receive reliable orders and are able to support their families. Haseena (pictured above, right) has managed the workshop since her husband passed away a few years ago.

Serrv partner VillageWorks operates with the motto “from disability to possibility.” Many of their artisans have physical disabilities and their workshops must be properly equipped to accomodate everyone. When VillageWorks decided to expand their sewing machine workshop in order to employ more artisans, Serrv offered to help. In 2014, we offered a grant and a low-interest loan for renovations. VillageWorks relocated one of their sewing production lines and their screen printing equipment into a new building, pictured right. Entrances and bathroom facilities are fully accessible and the building has a large space for future expansion.
