In fact, our name MUUTO, inspired by the Finnish word muutos, means new perspective. To us good design starts with the person. We handpick the brightest design talents and the leading contemporary designers in Scandinavia and give them the freedom to express their individual story through everyday objects. Some want to alter the world, others find passion in colour and shape and others still, draw deeply from personal experience. How do they see a vase, a lamp, a chair or any other everyday object? A shell chair designed to balance maximum comfort with minimum space. The shell with armrest is made from an innovative bio-composite with up to 25% wood fibers.

MATERIALS
The shell consists of a plastic composition with up to 25% wood fibers, polyproplen and coloured polyproplen. The wood base is made from solid PU lacquered oak wood.
PROCESS
The wood and plastic composition is heated and poured into a mold that presses the chair’s shell. The wood base is cut from solid oak wood, polished and powder lacquered for the coloured chairs.

The Cover chair is made from all wood and no metal. The wood is folded over the chairs legs and back rest. This technical innovation of the wood layering locks the chair together. Upholstered seats are with textiles from Kvadrat or Silk leather from Camo Leathers.

MATERIALS
Table base is made from extruded aluminium with an extra durable acrylic powder coating. Table top in either furniture board with laminate surfaces and ABS edges or in plywood with linoleum surface.
PROCESS
The table base’s legs and corner parts are extruded from aluminium to give the acrylic powder coating used to colour the base, the most homogenous surface possible. The table-top is cut from furniture board and finished off with either a laminate or a linoleum surface.

A contemporary take on the classic Scandinavian all-wood table. The use of new materials and detailing provides new perspectives on traditional Scandinavian furniture making. The table lives up to its name and is adaptable to suit any interiors, with combinations of table tops, frames and legs providing 18 different alternative tables. DIMENSIONS

MATERIALS
Table top is either made from oak or ash wood (coloured table tops). Frame is made from steel.

PROCESS
The table top board is cut out and a list in solid wood is glued on to the edges all the way around it. Veneer is glued on top and bottom all the way out to the edge. The surface is grinded and treated with white oil for the natural oak look, and painted for the coloured table tops. The steel frame is laser cut, bended and painted with powder coating. The legs are lathe grinded and the surfaces treated with oil or paint.

Inspired by the outline of industrial rooftops, the lamp plays with form and figure to turn the traditional lampshade upside down. The material is PET fibers. A percentage of the product comes from recycled plastic bottles, which are granulated, heated and blown like little fibers that are subsequently dyed. At MUUTO, we place the highest importance on being able to deliver high quality products. In order to ensure this, continuous testing is at the heart of our design and development process. All products undergo thorough testing and quality control, which includes testing at the Danish Technological Institute to ensure high levels of resistance, durability and safety of our products. Building on our Nordic heritage we value craftsmanship and our design and development process puts great emphasis on functionality and creating long-lasting designs. We put great emphasis on the selection of suppliers and handpick only suppliers that live up to MUUTO’s high standards - for example the majority of our standard textiles for upholstery are certified with the EU eco-label. We also offer relevant geographic standards, such as fire-resistant foam that have passed testing in accordance with the British standard BS 5852, and the California Technical Bulletin 117 E, as well as UL certification of lamps.
OUR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY & CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
MUUTO’s products are designed to last, which in itself is caring about and putting less pressure on the environment. We see responsible manufacturing processes as being an absolute must. We make every effort to ensure that we only work with socially responsible manufacturers that operate to the highest ethical standards. Our manufacturers adhere to the United Nations principles for human rights, anti-corruption and non-use of child labour as outlined in the UN’s Global Compact. We source our raw materials with the greatest of care and we view sustainability as a natural part of the New Nordic design emphasis of working with new materials and production methods. In this way, caring for the environment is not seen as a duty, but as an intrinsic part of the design process. MUUTO has the ambition to add a new perspective that often leads us to working with innovative materials that have lesser impact on our environment. For example, our RESTORE basket and UNDER THE BELL lamp are constructed from recycled PET bottles, while our FIBER chair series has a bio-composite shell that is made of up to 25% wood fibers. The chair is also 100% recyclable. As a Scandinavian design company, wood is of course a highly valued and much used material at MUUTO. We only work with Nordic wood types such as oak, beech, pine and ash that are not endangered and sourced from sustainable managed forests.

MATERIALS & MAINTAINANCE
At Muuto, we take a great deal of time and care to produce items that are made to last. By following a few simple care procedures, you can help ensure that your design piece stays in good condition for years to come. OAK
Oak wood is a traditional Scandinavian material, with resistance to outside factors such as water and fungus making it ideal for use in furniture designed to keep its beauty over many years. MUUTO products with an oiled oak veneer should be cleaned on a regular basis using a clean and damp cloth. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent. Products with solid oak planks, in particular when used for table tops, should also be kept clean using a damp cloth on a regular basis and stains should be removed using a mild mixture of water and detergent. For long term care, it is recommended that oak table tops should be treated 2-3 times a year with special oak wood oil that assists with making the wood resistant to stains and fluids. MUUTO has developed oil kits specially made for our solid wood products.
ASH
Like oak, ash wood is another key material in the Scandinavian furniture tradition. At MUUTO, naturally bright oiled ash wood is used in products to bring lighter coloured wood into the collection. It is also used for all of our coloured furniture products, being easily carved, shaped and an excellent surface for lacquering that helps to ensure vibrant colours that last. Colour lacquered and oiled ash wood should be cleaned on a regular basis using a damp and clean cloth. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent. Avoid contact with sharp objects as these can leave scratches in the wood and lacquer.
WOOD FIBER & PLASTIC COMPOSITE
An innovative wood and plastic bio-composite material was specially developed for MUUTO’s Fiber chair. The use of up to 25% Swedish pine wood fibers and Norwegian spruce fibers in the chair’s shell endows it with a uniquely warm matt texture that breaks up the sleek surface of the plastic. The material is also very robust and the chairs’ shells are 100% remouldable without the addition of new material. As the wood fibers are a natural material, small variations in the colour of the final product may occur. For regular cleaning, use a damp and clean cloth. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent.
LAMINATE
The laminate selected for MUUTO products is partly made from melamine resin, one of the hardest synthetically produced organic materials, and makes the surface highly resistant towards scratches and wear and tear. For regular cleaning and general care, clean the laminate with a damp and clean cloth. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent.
LINOLEUM
Linoleum is made of a mixture of raw materials including linseed oil, wood flour and resin. The result is a silky matt look and feel that adds a tactile dimension to the surface of a table top. The linoleum can be cleaned on a regular basis with a damp and clean cloth. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent. It is recommended to use a linoleum polish on the surface of the product 2-3 times a year.
STEEL
The steel used in MUUTO products come from a Swedish steel supplier that exclusively uses locally sourced and worked steel. The steel is either painted with a powder coating or chrome plated. We use a special powder coating that is highly scratch and wear resistant. The chrome quality is a chrome 3 variant, which is robust and stainless. Clean both powder coated and chrome steel on a regular basis using a clean and damp. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent.
ALUMINIUM
Aluminium’s malleability makes it the material of choice for MUUTO products that are both highly detailed and very strong. The result is a collection of robust items with a light and airy feel to them. Our aluminium products are painted with a highly durable powder coating that provides protection from scratches and surface cracks. Clean the aluminium on a regular basis using a clean and damp cloth with a mild solution of detergent. Remove stains using a mild mixture of water and detergent.
TEXTILES
MUUTO uses high quality textiles supplied by Kvadrat and Febrik that are selected as the perfect match to each individual product’s design requirement for material and colour. The range of textile materials found in the MUUTO collection have different requirements for cleaning and care. Please visit the ‘textile options’ section from p. 94-99 in this catalogue where the cleaning and care instructions for all standard textiles are described.
LEATHER
MUUTO leather products are upholstered with Silk leather from Camo. The Silk leather is an anilin leather type which means that the natural features of the animal hide are shown and may result in small colour and surface variations between products. The surface of the leather is either minimally treated or untreated which preserves its natural look and ensures that the leather has a soft and warm feel to it. The leather’s colour can also be expected to darken with time. As leather does not tolerate dry air or sunlight well, it is recommended that the furniture is not be placed in direct sunlight or in air conditioned rooms. Clean the leather with a dry cloth regularly. Treat the leather at least four times a year using only special leather treatment products for anilin leather.
POLYMER FELT
Polymer felt is a special composite material made with two ingredients; PET and polyester. PET is an environmentally friendly material partially made from recycled plastic bottles that is very shape stable. Polyester is a very hardwearing material that keeps its colour and structure. Clean the polymer felt by vacuuming it on a regularly basis. Remove stains with a clean and damp cloth.
COTTON
MUUTO throws are made from 100% cotton. The cotton is dyed and then woven by hand. Cotton is a natural material that is strong and hardwearing but also very easy to keep clean and attractive. Our cotton products are machine washable at 30 degrees Celsius. Wash separately to prevent colour changes.
WOOL
MUUTO rugs are made from 100% New Zealand wool, a high quality natural material that makes cleaning and maintenance easier. The wool rugs are woven by hand. For regular cleaning, vacuum the wool rugs. Clean stains instantly with sparkling water.
