The recent and increasing awareness of the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on the global climate inevitably requires climate-related considerations to be increasingly incorporated into the development of our society, business, industry and markets. And concurrent with the increasing number and scope of the global problems relating to climate change caused by increased emissions of greenhouse gases – especially CO2 – it is more urgent than ever to take steps to counteract this trend – and generally reduce carbon emissions around the world. As a leading manufacturer of intelligent lighting control, Servodan is conscious of its responsibility for contributing to mitigating these harmful environmental effects. Since the founding of our company in 1958, we have been bringing strong focus to bear on the development, manufacture and marketing of components and solutions which optimise human lighting comfort at work and at play and which help to reduce the amount of energy used for lighting at the same time. In other words, we endeavour to do our best to create a greener environment by working to increase the utilisation of intelligent lighting control, particularly at the private-sector and public-sector enterprises, organisations and institutions in the twenty markets around the world where Servodan operates so far. At the same time, Servodan is domiciled in a municipality which has formulated an ambitious vision of becoming carbon neutral before 2029.
This vision is specified in “Project Zero”, the link which interconnects municipal institutions, local businesses, educational institutions, utilities, agriculture and every single household and private individual. Our present climate strategy thus signifies a step towards being able to achieve the goals we have set here at Servodan that will enable us to reduce our own carbon emissions. At the same time, the strategy serves as the guiding light in our continued efforts to make intelligent lighting control a high priority for as many businesses and organisations as possible. Generating massive savings for 50 years Saving more than 900,000 tonnes of CO2 Although the climate debate arose only recently, Servodan has been working with energy-efficiency solutions for many years. Over time, these solutions have contributed to appreciable reductions in the use of energy for lighting and, consequently, have also significantly reduced the impact on the environment. From 1960 to 2008, Servodan sold more than 2.1 million lighting-control components distributed over the five following product categories: • outdoor controls • daylight switches • outdoor movement sensors • indoor controls, and • indoor movement sensors (stand-alone).
These factors alone are almost enough motivation for us to work even harder to make intelligent lighting control as high a priority as possible. Savings in kWh/CO2 with Servodan lighting control

Nine hundred and two thousand tonnes of CO2 is a large number and it equates to more than 250,000 Danish households becoming carbon neutral insofar as their usage of electricity is concerned – or to more than 200,000 old-model cars becoming carbon neutral. In so doing, Servodan makes a significant contribution year after year to reducing carbon emissions, while businesses and organisations can drastically reduce their electricity bill and users can enjoy optimal lighting comfort at the same time.

In reality however, the figure of 902,000 tonnes of CO2 is many times greater, as the savings effect of the different lighting-control components is included in the statistics only once – in the year they were sold. But as experience shows, a Servodan component can easily last for 10, 15 or 20 years, meaning that the total energy savings, and with that the total reduction in carbon emissions, are actually many times higher, as shown in the table on the right.

Summing up the average savings in terms of kWh per year for the respective components in the five product categories gives total savings of 1.4 billion kWh – or total cumulative savings of 902,000 tonnes CO2 from 1960 to 2008.

Servodan: a ZEROcompany The frontrunners in Sønderborg Municipality Sønderborg Municipality’s ambitious vision of becoming carbon neutral by 2029 is being effectuated through measures like “Zero Companies” – comprising the environmental frontrunners in Sønderborg’s private-sector and public-sector enterprises. ZERO Companies comprise a network of local clean-tech enterprises whose project participation obliges them to implement a number of initiatives which aim to reduce the companies’ own carbon emissions. Being a ZERO Company means that, among other things: • we undertake to reduce our carbon emissions by 10% by 2010, compared to the baseline year (2008) • we must develop and publish an ambitious, quantifiable climate strategy which, among other things, must lead to the achievement of the above-mentioned carbon-emission reduction • Servodan’s climate effort is documented by means of the leading international and independent database of companies’ impact on the climate – the Carbon Disclosure Project (further details are also available at www.carbondisclosureproject.net) • Servodan takes part in a long-term learning process relating to climate management, thereby formalising and systematising our climate-related effort via education, sparring and sharing lessons learned with other companies and organisations.
As a consequence of taking part in the ZERO Company project, we have charted our emissions of CO2. In 2008, Servodan emitted 145.09 tonnes of CO2 equivalents in direct (scope 1 and 2 emissions) and indirect emissions (scope 3 emissions). This is a relatively modest level of emissions for a company of our size. In light of the fact that Servodan – via our components and solutions – helped to save 126 million kWh, equalling 79,001 tonnes of CO2, in 2008 alone, we can easily assert that Servodan is carbon neutral. And then some!

Servodan’s Climate Strategy Goals Servodan is actually carbon neutral today. Partly because we have implemented a number of measures over the years at our headquarters in Sønderborg to reduce our usage of energy for heating, lighting, production, etc., which naturally includes lighting controls in a number of rooms. And, partly due to the massive reductions in user energy consumption brought about by the use of our products, we have a large “positive balance” on our account already. Our overarching goal is to reduce the company’s environmental impact on our surroundings in general – especially by reducing our carbon emissions – in everything we do relating to our activities. We do this with due consideration of our continued competitiveness, quality and financial standing. Our more specific targets are as follows: In relation to 2008, we want to reduce our absolute annual climate impact by 10 % before the end of 2010 – and by 35% overall before the end of 2014. Our climate impact is quantified as carbon equivalents primarily within scopes 1 and 2 (cf. our CDP registration). Basically, this target is absolute and thus independent of market trends and business and financial trends in general. Thus, the target is also independent of the current level of activity at Servodan. Our continuous follow-up and reporting contain some key figures, etc., however, that correlate our current

usage of energy and level of carbon emissions with Servodan’s actual number of employees and with the number of square metres respectively which Servodan uses for conducting its activities. These activity indicators are continuously being monitored and benchmarked as part of other measurements of energy and carbon emissions. Direct and indirect emissions As mentioned above, the specification of Servodan’s carbon emissions is primarily based on direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2). At the time of writing, the specification of our indirect emissions (scope 3) includes emissions relating to our travelling activities only. The indirect emissions relating to outsourced activities at suppliers (primarily in the Far East), emissions relating to the transportation of goods between suppliers, Servodan and wholesalers, etc., have not yet been calculated. Nevertheless, we aim to chart these emissions as well, even if our scope-3 emissions should actually be included in other companies’ carbon emission accounts.
Our climate vision Servodan intends to ensure that intelligent lighting control solutions are incorporated into buildings of private-sector and public-sector enterprises and organisations for the clear purpose of achieving optimal lighting comfort for our users while maximising the reduction of the amount of energy used for lighting. Words and action Climate Plan Operational action plans and specific initiatives intended to fulfil Servodan’s reduction targets are in the process of being prepared and implemented at the time of writing. The climate-related activities will focus on the following overarching areas: • the reduction of carbon emissions at Servodan: • we seek to achieve this by optimising the company’s use of energy for heating, lighting, production and general operations, including reducing the use of consumables such as paper, etc. • we also seek to achieve this by influencing the behaviour and attitudes of Servodan’s employees. • the reduction of carbon emissions as part of outsourced manufacturing and transportation of Servodan’s products: • we seek to achieve this by means of energy-efficiency measures wherever possible. • the reduction of carbon emissions by users of Servodan’s products and solutions: • we seek to achieve this by continuously focusing on disseminating knowledge to customers, consultants and influential parties about intelligent lighting control and how this affects the user’s usage of energy for lighting.
Embedment Servodan’s climate management is embedded in Servodan’s management group, where the company’s executive board is charged with overarching responsibility. The operational coordinator is Servodan’s marketing manager and Servodan’s quality manager who attend to ongoing data capture, reporting key climate-related figures, implementing action plans and specific initiatives and incorporating climate management into Servodan’s business processes and systems. Communication Communication is an important tool in our climate-related efforts: partly because communication is vital to involving and motivating employees in-house at Servodan and partly because we want to exert influence on the company’s stakeholders concerning the importance of intelligent lighting controls as an efficient means of reducing the use of energy. Accordingly, Servodan wants to be known as a company which puts the environment first and tirelessly seeks to ensure that the amount of energy used for lighting can be reduced as much as possible for the benefit of human comfort – and not least for the sake of the environment. We seek to achieve this position by communicating with the public, etc.

Every little bit helps! actively work to ensure that all of us use less energy and thus reduce our emission of greenhouse gases. Servodan has chosen the latter course of action, and we believe that many more people and companies will do the same.
