8
Aku gilakan awan. Awan mengajar aku erti kebebasan. Sepertimana ia berubah, beralun dan menghilang, membawa berjuta cerita tenang. Aku taksub pada awan.

It’s 15:00 in the afternoon. And I’m seating on a comfortable plush chair, placed at the centre of the shop. It’s a perfect spot for witnessing a Monday’s hectic lives of people in a two-point perspective. To my surprised, it’s full in here. (Just a minute ago, a man around his 50’s sat right in front of me, us sharing a small round table, with my things occupying most of the space. It’s a two seat set, so I don’t mind sharing.)
12
I have arrived here, to “A comforting third place”, writing this „inexperienced writeup of mine, while sipping my hot caramel macchiato. Starbucks Coffee in Bangsar Village, that is where I am right now. And the reason of my being here is to experience this brilliant coffee culture that Starbucks has created, since its birth in 1971, March 30th. The marketdriven organization might call this coffee chain a brilliant brand bomber, and who in the world wouldn’t? It’s a place where sophisticated people can share coffee, community,
camaraderie and connection. Almost 70% of the customers coming in here where I’m witnessing are educated business advocates with obvious limitless money in the bank. And here is where the golden question comes in; How obsessive are these people to drinking a RM15 worth of coffee every working days in a week, of their lives? Sure you can own an intelligent tumbler that’s been designed specifically for Starbucks, that then addresses to its loyal customers who thinks coffee is the best solution to stay hydrated as compared to a boiled tap water that you can pack from home for free. Here on its menu board wrote bellow in green font saying “Bring in a tumbler. Save RM2 and use one less paper cup every time.” Can you see one marketing strategy they use to its customers? Green initiative; where people in the world are much aware of now, helping each other to save the age old earth. Starbucks is of a different breed. They are different from other coffee shops in the world. With its use of intelligent furniture that is made of used wood and recycled materials, it creates a sense of being and comfort for its customers. Starbucks is the coffee shop that wants to stare deep into your eyes and „connect. Maybe this doesn’t sound obsessive enough,
“ This coffee brand is so powerful that columnist John Barber quoted, “it’s like head lice through a kindergarten ”. so let me bring you into a deeper insight of how this coffee shop has implemented a segment of life in one’s mind. This one’s called; Global Domination. Trust me, everyone knows what Starbucks is, and I mean everyone. And that includes infants. One vocab that a parent teaches its new born baby to speak is Starbucks. (I’m kidding, just exaggerating a little.) But my point is kids know what Starbucks is. It’s a coffee shop. Just as how kids projected an image to other plastic brands like KFC, McDonalds and Nike. This coffee brand is so powerful that columnist John Barber quoted, “it’s like head lice through a kindergarten”. This coffee shop just pops out like wild mushrooms. Here in Bangsar Village alone stood two Starbucks joint just 123 steps away from one another. (Yes, I’ve counted.) So why compete for the same customers of the same area? Isn’t one enough to gather all coffee addicts in one strategic spot? This one’s a strategy. Here Starbucks uses a policy called “clusters”. [Clustering: a competitive retail strategy] It’s a highly aggressive strategy,
13
and it involves something the company calls “cannibalization”. Their policy is to drop clusters of outlets in urban areas already dotted with cafes and espresso bars. Whilst instead of opening a few stores in every city in the world, Starbucks waits until it can blitz an entire area and spread. The idea is to saturate an area with stores until the coffee competition is so fierce that sales drop even in individual Starbucks outlets. Understandably, the closer the outlets get to each other, the more they begin to poach or “cannibalize” each other’s clientele. “A new Starbucks store is an investment”. What that means is that while sales were slowing at individual stores, the total sales of all the chain stores combined continued to rise doubling, in fact. It also helped Starbucks, no doubt, that its cannibalization strategy preys not only on other Starbucks outlets but equally on its real competitors, independently run coffee shops and restaurants. Such brave strategy played by Starbucks made them become so obsessive that this practice began creating controversy
14
“ Starbucks realestate strategy was to stake out a popular independent café in a well-trafficked, funky location and simply poach the lease from under it. ” in 2000. Starbucks real-estate strategy was to stake out a popular independent café in a well-trafficked, funky location and simply poach the lease from under it. Several independent café owners in prime locations are on record claiming that Starbucks went directly to their landlords and offered to pay them higher rental payments for the same or adjacent spaces. Such advantage has made them practice Usury. As we are discussing delicious insights about Starbucks, have you ever stopped and notice how gradually the interior, the façade or the in-house products changes due time? Notice how the packaging of its items displayed are eye-catching. Even a local banana is neatly packed in a transparent plastic and sold in front of the cashier so customers can grab one and ask the barista to blend it along with their coffee. And that will cost you another RM2/banana. Well I do not blame anybody because indeed, we as humans are attracted to nice
(shiny) things. This is the magic of Branding. And I would like to call this; Brand Bombing. As most of us are aware, the things that surround us are of branded goods. The clothes that we wear, the shoes that we style it with and the take-outs that we consume are completely branded. Franchises that have gone militant towards changing the landscape of selling products has submerged into an era called „the Age of the Superbrand. Starbucks is one of the many Superbrands in the world. But because Starbucks is different, it is in the business of taking a much more generic product – a cup of coffee – and branding it so completely that it becomes a spiritual/designer object. As its marketing director Scott Bedbury says, to “align ourselves with one of the greatest movement towards finding a connection with your soul”. Having to notice how Starbucks conceptualize its store design based on the “four elemental icons”; “Earth to grow. Fire to roast. Water to brew. Air for aroma”. The effect of the Starbucks cluster is a powerful evidence to categorize it as an elite lifestyle brand. For many of their loyal consumers, no price is too high to pay for these branded
goods and, in fact, merely buying the products provides an insufficient relationship. Brand obsessed shoppers have adopted an almost fetishistic approach to consumption in which the brand name acquires a talismanic power. One after another, the brainiacs of Starbucks goes deeper into making sure its stores are everlasting in this world. Starbucks, upon announcing that it would begin selling furniture over the internet, calls this a “brand canopy”. This is the true meaning of a lifestyle brand: you can live your whole life inside it. And if coffee houses, why not publishing too, ask Starbucks. As the sentiment goes, “if you aren’t everywhere, you’re nowhere”. Less that we are aware of, coffee is no longer a want, but a need. Nobody is more acutely aware of how enmeshed language and brands have become than the brand managers themselves. “Products are made in the factory,” says Walter Londor, “but brands are made in the mind.” Brand builders are the new primary producers in our so-called knowledge economy. Whether if “business make business decision” or “image is everything”, you are your own to decide. So before I end my paragraph, here’s a question:
Q: Are you obsessed, or am i? 15
I awake, from a deep long slumber, from a dream-world perfection. I fly, from my broken cocoon, to the high skies. I descend, for I have seen what is below and I have dreams to show; crucial codes to break them all free. I believe in bonding with nature, not binding. While pain and sacrifice is a human must to gain growth and wisdom. Be a philosopher and go beyond acknowledging existence of something; know the meaning. And this, this is what I share. So I dive into the mass, as deep as I can burrow. I explore this entanglement. Of nature and built. Of what is common and what contrasts. Of the loved and the despised. Of reality and mystery. In this monotonous world, we seek the unravelling of endless questions. Let this be a relic, a tribute, a testament to our journey. Oh roots, dig deeper into earth. Oh leaves, grasp higher into light. All is fated and I keep faith. I keep looking for priceless pearls. I keep sowing seeds of wisdom and taste. I keep on till life leaves.

a Conversation With the City / KL SS
Kuala Lumpur sometimes abbreviated as K.L.,is the federal capital and most populous city in Malaysia. She covers an area of 243 km2 (94 sq mi) and has an estimated population of 1.6 million as of 2012.
Muhammad Shamin bin Sahrum is a travelling nomad, seeking things which he doesn’t understand and tries to reconcile with his past. Here he’s trying to be a forensic architect interviewing KL.

SS
So let’s start. I’m going to randomly shoot you some questions. So it would be great if you could answer honestly. Don’t worry, nothing too hurtful though. Just regarding the current state that you are in now. I’m starting of with a very personal one, your currently what? 157 years old? So what does it feel like to be in your age?
KL
Your starting with the age game i see... Not a good start boy, i’ve seen older cities that could pick up a girl better than you. Look at Paris. He doesn’t need to do a thing and already he has slept with woman in the trongs, more than Simmons has i reckon. Owh..the question..well, i feel quite young despite my age, well when u compare it to Berlin or Makkah, it’s not so bad. Had a pretty mellow life i can tell you that far! (laughs)
SS
Mellow? You had Tunku declaring Merdeka! Haha! Surely that counts as something?
KL
Well yes, that. Who could forget! Ahhh the energy from the crowd..i miss those days. People were hard back then, but they fought for something. Nowadays people are how are..how would you say it..consumed? They’re always with their small box in their hands... But i had it much better than my friends in Cambodia and Vietnam. People were dying in the hundred of thousands then... (stares afar)...
SS
i’m..i’m sorry to hear that..lucky we went through a pretty peaceful independence. But sadly enough, most of us forgot what we had to go through...all people want is to go to malls now...
KL
That’s another thing i really don’t get. Who’s the fella that brought the idea of malls into Malaysia? Absurdest thing to happen since communism... Why can’t you people just accept that your country is hot! You live on the equator! It’s humid! Put on a hat and get on with it!
19
SS
SS
Was just about to ask you what you uhm..well..(mutters) thought on that matter (laughs). So are you against the whole idea of it? I wonder what was it like without malls? My point exactly.
KL
Owh it was lovely! People cycled everywhere, walked... I’m not sure what human kind means by being successful, but having a car is far from it! People were sure much more happier then, always with their families doing things... Air was fresher.. despite me smoking occasionally, it was still crisp, and sharp.
SS
People were happy? But it was hard then, i mean meager salary, hard work, no transportation, bad infrastructure. Tell me that can’t be considered good?
KL
Well is it? If so what’s the difference between now? You lot with your cursing during peak times, i’m having a hard time just trying to barely contain it. And when was the last time that anyone looked up to the sky, took a deep breath and said that today is great??
20
KL
SS
Do you wish it was any different now?
KL
(Silence)...In all honesty, i’ve accepted the things that have happened.. (stares into space), i mean that’s just who i am...i’m the bad and the good, just like the people living in me. But i do miss feeling beautiful, like truly beautiful, inside... Sometimes i feel as if people put make up on me just so that they could earn an extra buck or two. Like a whore waiting on her shifts... I long for that feeling when people wandered in me and got lost amidst the chaos, stopped in their tracks and found something beautiful along the way. Here’s a secret though. I’m secretly in jealousy of how Penang is doing. She’s 228 and still looks better than i do! I wish that Ernest guy would come down and give me a makeover.
At least it’ll be a better job than the one that Johor got. I pity that Johor fella! Just when he was about to brag about that beautiful tattoo of his, someone stupid came and rubbed it clean off! Haa! (LAUGHTER)
SS
(Laughs as well) Yea.. we all know that story!
KL
But you know..not everything’s bad. That’s life. Looking at what you lot go through now makes me thankful that i don’t have to go through the same ordeal though. Paying for black mucky liquid more than for food just to get from point A to B ?? That’s just sad... And i’m the one hurting here ‘cause of all the tarmac and concrete you people poured on me.
SS
..Uhm..yea...Dearly sorry about that.. the powers that be have decreed that it needs to be done.
KL
SS
Yes there are (smiles) Thank you for willing to take some time off your hectic schedule long enough for me to do this interview. Thank you for taking care of us all this while...
KL
And thank you for making me feel young again dear (smiles) haven’t had a good laugh in ages. I’m sure we’ll be bumping into each other more often after this.
SS
You are most welcome Ma’am (smiles)
(With that the conversation ends.)
23 01 2014
Not to worry dear ! (laughs) No need to feel guilty (smiles) It’s not like you people have power over anything nowadays ... but there’s still much to be thankful about... 21

Surface ReConfiguration / By
A parasite in scientific definition is a living organism that is attached to a living host for survival advantages such as food, nutrition, breeding and also reproduction. Parasitic architecture on the other hand can be defined as an adaptable and exploitive form of architecture that creates a relationship with its host building containing a different program configuration but rely on the same end user, location advantages or even structural needs. Malaysia as a developing country is facing a serious unorganized housing problem in urban cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. Local citizens from villages migrate to cities for better job opportunities and often end up living on the outskirts in self-building unorganized housing communities. The government has tried to address this issue by building low cost housing units far away from the city
24
Danial Ismail and relocating these slump areas to their new locations. Since these projects have been developed, the number of people flooding into the city is increasing making it impossible to accommodate the staggering amount. Malaysia has suffered multiple financial breakdowns during the past few decades and this had led to a significant effect on the development industry. In Klang Valley alone there has been five abandoned projects in an area called Bukit Raja consisting of office blocks and housing towers. Squatters and families have evaded these abandoned spaces from slums to be closer to the city. Considering theses structures are unused and low cost housing developments has been temporarily stopped due to the country’s financial downhill, It is only fair for these people to take refuge and bring life to these long abandoned concrete shelter.
rint 400mm or 40cm.pdf
These people act as parasites to the host building by building their new homes using found materials scattered around the unfinished building adding also to the material scavenged from their slum housing units. Like mushrooms living of a dead log, this is a rejuvenating intervention on behave of humanity and the city’s appearance as they eliminate unused bare structures and put them to good use.

My approach to further enhance this movement spatially
is how to slice open structures to create more habitable surfaces and openings. The proposition is to enhance workable surfaces for maximum and better space usage without compromising the spatial quality and living environment.
“Its better to design an ugly building that functions rather than build a beautiful building that does not function
25
Making use of abandoned sites to live its potential and also solving unorganized housing issues seem to be a legitimate answer rather than leaving these sanctuaries to rot. Juxtaposing the scenario from a negative to a possibly positive defines urban development to another level. Taking into consideration the climatic and environmental aspects while deciding the incisions on the structure is a factor to take note. Addition of workable surfaces can make parasitic adaptation more effective. C

I am interested on how these two theories, the grossformen and the anarchitecture and how it can be combined and create a chaotic structure that can be adapted to use rather than being forever unused as an abandoned building. Bio-mimicking the typical breeding conditions of a parasite into an architectural context is hoped to make the proposition more natural. Military and mining activities has scared landscapes after leaving them abandoned with traces of their past activity. In the Nevada desert there are countless areas that have been used as weapon disposal sites and explosive testing grounds. I started to look into work done by Emmet Gowin, an American photographer. He had a photograph series titled Altered landscapes where he flew across America and document landscapes that have been altered by human activity. His photographs are areal views of the sites, which you can see evidence of human activity left abandoned.
26
“Military and mining activities has scared landscapes after leaving them abandoned with traces of their past activity.” These sites to me give out the narrative of being a negative and have the same vibe as the abandoned structures in the city. Imitating the mathematical equation of combining a negative with a negative becoming a positive, I intend to extract and move the abandoned structures and become adaptation foundations in the scared landscapes spawning a new utopia. The purpose is not to create “the” solution but “a” solution. The basic spawning stages

at the new sites will start of with the foundation programs which will be dwelling blocks and from there further develop into more elaborate programs for economy and sustain living. Depending on the abandoned buildings available, the form and capacity of the “to be” spawning sites will differ. The structures that are the result of re-configuring do not dictate the spaces that will be inhabited. They only act as scaffolding and be built upon suggesting flexibility on each spatial designation and hierarchy of space to suit its proper program. Building materials and components from previous settlements are introduced into the new foundation structure.
I made an example of how this whole process can begin by selected an abandoned office building from Messe Hamburg, Germany.

This 11 stories office block discontinued its construction in 2004 after the funding for the project was cut off. I used the elevation picture of the building and began the process of reconfiguration. I cut and categorized the elevation elements of the structure and rearranged their placements. Several forms were produced to generate more surfaces through rearranging the building elements. All forms were tested for
the number of particles it can hold by formulating a 3D model then running particle test algorithms and the most optimum result was chosen. This new configured structure will host the adaptation of new spaces and dwelling units built by the people themselves and relating back to the theory similar to the Grossformen ideology.

1994. Ketika umur hingus meleleh ke mulut adalah perkara biasa, pengetahuan aku tentang superhero tak kurang hebatnya. Masa tu, sebut sahaja Power Rangers, Batman, Ironman, Superman, Kamen Rider, Cybercop, Ultraman, Keluangman, Tiongman dan seangkatan dengannya, semua aku tahu. Mana taknya, masa tu siapa kurang tahu pasal ilmu watak superhero, dikira pondan. “jadah apa pondan woi?!”
Terpekik telolong seperti manusia berkarisma tinggi. Menjaja kuasa ‘penuh’ tolak ansur dan berintegriti.
“ Kelihatan superhero masakini berwajah lain. Terima kasih Polis Bantuan Universiti ** 45

Retreat For The Mad Scientist’s Cult This project is about a mad scientist, Gavin Roach, who wanted to prove that a salmon can produce electricity to make 12 cups of tea.
The mad scientist was last seen doing his research in Llanberis, the place of engineering wonders in Wales, the land of the Electric Mountain. (the mountain is dug out to build an electric power station inside it) It is where we can see the remnants of welsh slate quarry, and where the Sacred Fish in the well dwells. After a while, stories of the scientist in Llanberis turned into a cult. it created the opportunity to use the people who came to see the laboratory and supply electricity to power the laboratory itself.

be stored as electricity whilst they walkabout on the Piezoelectric plates. The project uses the system of myths and rituals of baptism to map out the spatial sequence, seeing how people could travel as far as Wales just to experience a baptism at the Holy Wells, to be blessed and cured by the sacred fish. The architecture uses the method of manipulation; ie how the priest creates myth, adding on rituals, thus playing on people’s desperation to get the most out of them.

“Hm, apa maksud kau?” “Glory… What?”
“What a waste. Kau dah belajar 4 tahun kot.” “Dan 4 tahun tu jugak Design aku kekal kat C+ sampai C. B- pun tak pernah. Aku just tak masuk dengan Design thingy.” “See, ini kata-kata seorang loser beb.”
53
Kalau ya, atas sebab apa dia nak sakit sebegitu? Aku bukannya sesiapa untuk diangkat dan dipelihara selain seorang kawan – walhal kawan pun tinggalkan kawan mereka yang lain bila dah nampak peluang. “Kau nak jadi writer apa? Fiksyen? Haha wei ni tahun 2014 kot. Kerja macam tu mana untung. Kau nak merempat ke dalam hidup kau?” “Kan aku cakap, aku akan cari step aku.” “Sekarang ni semua kena kejar bidang professional. Sebab macam kau nilah, kita orang Melayu susah nak maju. Selalu nak berkait dengan bidang seni jalanan ni. Menulis buku, painting, muzik; kau kena bawak diri kau tinggi.” “See, semua ada part masingmasing.” Aku cuba membalas perlahan, elak untuk mengancam ideanya secara terus, “aku nak take part dengan penulisan walaupun kau kata tu seni jalanan.” “Sedihlah Syed.
“Memang betul pun. Sebab dunia nak kita dalam bidang professional.” “See, kau pun ada idea macam tu. “A’ah, then?” “Sains dan teknologi itu bahagian lahiriah. Jadi di mana rohaniah tadi?” Dia diam dan berfikir sebentar. “Rohaniah kan kita ada agama. Apa susahnya.”

The Obsession Of Newness In Architecture
Nowadays we have seen that an excessive concern for newness draws contemporary architecture into the world beyond its comfort level. There is a lot of modern architects attempt to define and establish their own identity or “newness” in architecture by designing and introducing the individual thoughts and ideas.
By
62
Since the past few decades, newness has become the fundamental criteria of quality in architecture .Newness in architecture is always been seen as vision of future of the architect. The architect has the power to speculate and show people what is possible and what is not. They believe that the architectural world should have a room for visionary and imaginary ideas to escape the problems of the day, and that is when the idea of “Utopian architecture” derived .However, history has shown that not all proposed architectural designs and solutions have proven buildable and constructible.
Saiful Sazlan
In order to make the “newness” in architecture become a reality, the important role of technology is undeniable and undisputable. Here arises a matter of course. Does newness and technology lead us to utopia? And if the answer is yes, does that mean we are living in the past architect’s utopia? According to Oxford Advanced dictionary, newness can be interpreted as “to make a new discovery or to do something that has not been done before”. Newness in architecture is expected to conjure concern and enthusiasm, and being obsessed by novelty. As an architect, we cannot avoid the idea of ‘newness’ in architecture. It can be about designing a new building, renovating an old structure or even designing the whole development concept of a city. In an article written by Juhani Pallasmaa, newness is usually related with extreme individuality and self-expression. The more subjective a design is, the more it focuses on the subjectivity of the architect. Reception on newness in architecture is not always positive. Newness has been criticized for its extreme individuality and uniqueness. As Maurice Merleu-Ponty emphasizes that, “We have come to see not the work of art, but the world according to the work”. Criticism of Gehry’s work includes objections that his designs wasting structural resources by creating functionless facades and alienated designs that do not belong in their surroundings. His designs for the new Faculty of Business for University of Technology, Sydney has been slammed for
“ Newness in architecture is expected to conjure concern and enthusiasm, and being obsessed by novelty. “ being unresponsive to local climate and context, resource-intensive, structurally wasteful and above all, costly. The same goes to Zaha Hadid. Her futuristic idea for the flamboyant new Guangzhou Opera House has been criticized for its insensitivity to local climate and context. As a result, During typhoon season, the rain seeping relentlessly into the building. Another Hadid’s project, London Aquatics Centre, have been accused by critics for its curvaceous roof as a design blunder that blocked most of the top rows from viewing the highest diving board. Vision of Future –Utopia Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, utopian visions have been understood, more and more to make the idea become reality. The concept of utopia, derived from Thomas More’s famous text of that name in 1516 – from the Greek ou meaning ‘not’ or eu meaning ‘happy’, and topos meaning ‘place’. In architecture, the idea of utopia started when the world was facing the devastation and destruction wrought by World War 1. During that time, the architects believed that their building could help solve the world’s problem. Using new materials available during the Industrial Revolution, modernist architects tried to imagine new cities that reinforced utopian visions.
63
As philosophers such as Karl Mannheim and Paul Ricoeur have discussed, utopia and ideology are simultaneously connected together 16. It is all about social change and the possibility of a radical different future while stabilize the features of the present. Some utopian visions focused on new technology, new social orders and still others on open. Each architect’s ideal was different, but they all knew that one thing in common, that the ideas could never be built during that time – but carefully planned and highly systematic. Utopia and technology As thought on utopia developed, however, many Utopist were uncertain. In his greatest work, A modern Utopia, H. G. Wells accepts that the idea of constantly developing the technology. In the 1960s, there was an avant-garde architectural group called “Archigram” and based at the Architecture Association, London that was futurist, anti-heroic and pro-consumerist, drawing inspiration from technology in order to create a new reality that
64
was exclusively expressed through hypothetical projects and idea. Between 1960 and 1964, Archigram manifested a provocative project called “Plug-in City” that suggests a hypothetical fantasy city containing modular residential units that “plug in” to a central infrastructural mega machine 19. Prefabricated living units, office and shops are plugged into a grid by a crane that would install and replace the modules planned for obsolescence and the organically self-refreshing city system would support change and growth. And this principle is transcribed into a vision of the future reality.
(Below) Plug-In-City, Archigram, Peter Cook
In 1972, the Archigram’s idea of Plug in City is shared and continued by a Japanese Metabolist architect, Kisho Kurokawa with his Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo. The 8-foot by 12-foot by 7-foot tall capsules were fabricated of site, and installed by crane and bolted to one of two support towers 20. This tower reflects Archigram’s space capsule inspiration but not the flexibility concept, since none of the capsules was ever replaced. In 2005, Shigeru Ban, a prominent Japanese architect designed “Nomadic Museum”,a purpose-built temporary structure used to house a photography and film exhibition. The main idea of this museum is a sustainable traveling museum. The architect imagined a structure that could easily be assembled and installed, with its industrialized containers constantly rearranged by cranes, echoing the ideas of Archigram.
of a different and better future. The hope that cannot be justified in conventional and traditional principles, the hope that links the perception of how visions relate to reality, and how they can be realized. Answering the question “does newness and technology lead us to utopia?” with a yes, I would say that we are actually living in the past architect’s utopia. Technology is the driving force for utopia and this idea will be sustained and continued. John Rajchman in his writings “what is new in architecture” states that. “That is why we can never find ourselves anywhere: our place is yet to come, our time is yet to take place”, echoing that today is not really our visions, but someone else. Ours is yet to come.
(Below) Plan Voisin, Le Corbusier Archigram’s visions succeeded in inspiring a new generation of architects and designers. Their radical and provocative ideas to reveal and explore infrastructural elements and reverse traditional building hierarchies as their utopian visions have succeeded and inspired many of modern architects and urban thinking today, parallels to technological advancement. Both newness and utopian visions in architecture are the hope

Kau pernah tau tak pasal projek ‘monster tank’ Hitler?Haa..ni aku nak cite sikit pasal tuh. Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte or dalam bahasa Amerika ‘Land Cruiser P. 1000 Rat’. Memang sangat beso bro. Memang dasyat. Kau boleh bayangkan tak kalau lah benda ni betol-betol dorang buat. Mau ranap batalion askar Moscow. haha. Ko bayangkan ni, tank ni ada 2 laras meriam SK C/28 280 mm. 280mm?ergh.beso ni haa.pergh. siap ada 128 mm anti-tank gun , 2 laras lagi 15 mm Mauser Meriam-automatik MG 151/15. Eh.. ada lagi 8 laras 20 mm Flak 38 antiaircraft 20 mm guns. 8 bro..laapaaaann!! Tapi….
75
tidak cukup resoures, so projek ni batal. Mase tu ada drawing yang da siap. Batal?emm..da agak.berangan aje. Setakat cakap, tapi habuk pun tarak. Macam-macam lah benda dia nak buat. Tapi banyak tak guna pun mase perang. Macam projek ‘Schwerer Gustav’ . da siap da. Da test. Memang power. Cuma masa perang, benda ni belum ready. So kau paham la sendiri. Pelaksanaan? Susa la mau cakap.
76
Kadang-kadang banyak idea orang boleh bagi. Cakap itu boleh jadi.ini boleh buat. Tapi kau yakin ke semua tuh dilaksana ke? Jarang la bro. macam-macam hal. Macam-macam alasan. Padahal, buat pun belum. Tu la akibat kalau bercakap banyak dari pakai otak. Orang kan buat keje pakai tangan. Fikir guna otak. Sekarang banyak orang buat keje senang. Buat keje guna mulut. Aku rasa kau nih taksub sangat dengan Hitler. Kau tak tau ke Hitler ni propaganda yahudi? Freemason. I DON’T BELIEVE IT !
Mulut asyik cakap, abes tangan kau buat apa? Ni ha.ni tangan aku. Tengah reply message awek. Like gambo pompuan kat FB. kadang-kadang ber’debat’ kat FB. u know what? aku selalu menang kau tau. Kira tangan aku tangan warriors la sebenarnya. kan? Tu jela kau. Tolong hentikan. Tolong jangan jadi BANGANG. Tu je aku nak pesan, kawan. 77

When Money Speaks Louder Than People The most powerful thing in the world use to be intelligence, religion, but these days, that throne is uphold by none other than money. It is the most powerful and influential things exist in this modern era. Its an irony, the fact that the world today focus on the value of things rather than people. How much do you have? How much does it cost?? How much can we get? How much did we lose? How much is the pay?

These words are often heard on a daily basis by everyone. The reason why these words are chosen as the welcoming passage of the paragraph is to show you how we humans emphasie on the aspect related with money in every part of our lives. The present world as we know it, has already since a decade ago, being structured in a way that makes money a very important commodity that we need. Being able to attain the capability to have more money than you can spend has become the holy grail of this world, the dream every child is taught to have. So as a child grows up, they learn that they need money to survive in this world. They learn that

things of no value or non profitable should be discarded and not be cared for. They are taught to search for progress and view modernization as the way to go. But is it really? Because if so, why are there never ending streams of people that repeatedly emphasize the negative effect it will cause to the present and future generation. However, the method to counter or negate the effect of this is still an on-going process of who is to blame and who should change. So what am I doing here? Why are you reading this? Which side are you on? Which side do you agree with? What I am doing here is nothing more than just to spark a thought in your mind. I was raised in a family where both my parents had different understanding of how money should be viewed. I was raised and taught that money is an important part of life as it determined they success of your life, but at the same time I was also taught about not to emphasize on money over people as life is something that can be bought. So what is it? Going back to my origin in architecture, I didn’t really see this as an issue. My job is to make good buildings for good clients. Sounds quite simple. But then I see something more. What if the client, which in my understanding can be considered as a good client, is asking the architect to do the wrong thing?

What I’m referring to is the billion Ringgit Kampung Baru Redevelopment Project. I have only been to Kampung Baru a few times. The food was nice, the air was nice, the environment was nice, and the people was nice too. Kampung Baru sits right next to the city centre but the environment and the feeling in Kampung Baru is like I entered a new dimension away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I can still see the Petronas Twin Tower, and all the other eye-catching skyscrapers around Kuala Lumpur, but being at Kampung Baru, at the moment, at that time, was something that I find of high value. It was simple, it was pleasant and it was relaxing. I enjoyed Kuala Lumpur as it is, there is nothing wrong with Kuala Lumpur (okay, that might have been too much, they are things that needs to be done to improve Kuala Lumpur, but lets save that for next time), but sometimes, being able to enjoy the village-like atmosphere in a place adjacent to the city is something that to me should be valued and protected. I find it sad that these places will be lost in the near future and that my children and the next generation would never be able to experience it.
All for the sake of modernization, is it? Okay, this might be a little side-track, but what is really modernization? Skyscrapers everywhere occupied by the worlds wealthiest conglomerate? The new Kampung Baru will be known as a part of the city that people go to work in the day-in-day-out. Is it really the best? Sure we hear all the reports claiming how beneficial the project is for the people of Kampung Baru, they will get a good amount of compensation, their land price would skyrocket and all the other statistics. But yes, that’s the statistic, that was made by the people that is sitting at their desk everyday counting numbers and how to divide it in a way that everyone can hopefully have a smile on their face at the end of the day. I think we shouldn’t be doing what we are doing now. The issues are there. The people involved in the project knows the risk but their hands and mouth are tied up by the so called ‘higher-power’. Those people can only see the current residents of Kampung Baru as assets that has now become a liability to their progress to make more money.
not be able to make the money that was initially desired, but I think we can make enough to give everyone the smile that they need at the end of the project. It’s not an easy step, more of a steep climb, but I think by protecting the social value of Kampung Baru, we can benefit more in the long run. If we can come up with something that can modernize Kampung Baru while maintaining the social value needed in Kampung Baru. It will be something unheard of, a prototype for something that can hopefully trigger a new dialogue between scholars and what should be emphasized in a modernization of a city and its people.
So what can we do? This is where I want to interject. As an architect, I think that a better solution can be made to solve this issue. But somebody needs to make the sacrifice. Yes, we might

The stroy of the flameco dancers can be seen by the ‘reddness’ of the dress. The layers, swirl with the hips and body, resembled the story told by the story teller, with the ambience of the classical spanish guitarist.
