A Great New York RV Route I am from New York and after having traveled across most of the country with my family on road trips here is my favorite routes close to home to follow so whether you just purchased an RV or if you are an old veteran here are great places to visit. Niagara Falls and West New York Travel through across the state of New York enjoying the sites along the way. The trip comes out to around 330 miles and 5 ½ hours of driving. Start: Albany 

The capitol of New York has plenty to offer and quite a variety. If you are a history buff hit up the New York State museum which features changing exhibits from the early inhabitants of the state to modern inventions as well as a number of exhibits for kids. A nice perk about the museum is that is free! Visit the Egg! Named for its shape the building is a performing arts venue that offers a variety of music styles in concert. Check their schedule so you arrive to hear someone you enjoy. You can also hit up the Palace theatre for similar events Make sure to grab something to eat. Being from New York I am sickened by the gross package of “NY style” cheesecake at Wal-Mart. If you want the real thing stop at Cheesecake Machismo and get a real taste of New York

Stop 2: Syracuse (145 miles 2 hrs) 

 

Visit Buttermilk Farms where the nearby waterfalls look like buttermilk and if you are feeling like a swim jump in at the base of the falls. There are trails up into the woods for a more scenic view that includes some awesome gorges Stop at Dinosaur Barbeque (most iconic restaurant of the city) and order some ribs, chili, beer and then relax. Very unique restaurant with a blues feel to it. If you are a sports fan stop by the Dome for a Cuse basketball game, dress in orange, and grab a hotdog and get ready to cheer.

Stop 3: Palmyra (67 miles 1 hour 7 mins) 

Jump in the car and keep heading west making sure to stop in Palmyra, a small town with some awesome events. The most noteworthy is the Hill Cumorah pageant; an enormous outdoor play on the side of a hill put on by the LDS church explaining the story of the Book of Mormon. Regardless if you are interested in the religion stop by to watch a play filled with water and fire

effects, sword fights, and a cool storyline. The pageant is free and has plenty of food to buy if you are hungry. The Pageant is in mid-July. Stop 4: Buffalo (98 miles 1 ½ hours) 

 

There has always got to be more food! If you are craving hot wings make sure to stop by Duff’s Sheridan Patio. The wings are top notch and rage from pretty hot to burn your mouth. Whether you are looking for some tasty wings or feel the need to prove your manhood with “suicide” wings make sure to stop by The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is a museum known for its displays of modern and contemporary art. Unfortunately the museum is not free. If you are into modern art the Prudential (Guaranty) Building designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler as well as the George Barton House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are in Buffalo! If you are looking for natural beauty try the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens which houses a huge variety of beautiful flowers and plants. If you brought your kids along perhaps you want to stop at the Buffalo Zoo

End: Niagara Falls (20 miles ½ hour) 

  

Last but certainly not least is the Falls at Niagara. You can ride the maid of the mist; a barge that takes passengers up to the horseshoe falls where you can (as the name indicates) bath in the mists of the falls. There are also wooden stairs that you can walk along at the base of American Falls (don’t worry they give you waterjackets) If you are feeling lucky after visiting the falls you can try your hand at the Fallsview Casino Resort For those hoping not to go bust visit the Rapids Theatre which hosts a number of shows including concerts and comedy acts. Golfing is available at Hyde Park (the largest park in New York outside of Manhattan). Bocce, lawn bowling, tennis, and baseball are also available

Hopefully this list inspired you to see the sites outside of New York City. So save up, get RV insurance, pack your bags, grab your kids and head out on a great road trip. Photo Credit: Stefan, Anupam_ts,
