INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE & DESIGNS
3D CAD TECHNICIAN PORTFOLIO C St Designs Ltd
PROFILE October 2017 As a Kenyan born British Interior Architect with a flair in Design, I can clearly attribute my career Interests from the humble beginnings of my fine art drawings in Kenya. The reproduction of the “59 Class” locomotive engine I recall drawing, from engaging with the Kenya Railways where my farther worked, taught me great creative skills such as perspectives, or varnishing points, as I tried to recreate sceneries captured from our nostalgic train journey experiences, often leaving me with a great sense of achievement. With such feelings, I was driven to further my career in creating more of such work through Architectural draughtsmanship. Adding technical know-how with the science of Physics into my art, I was able to convert ideas into real form, exciting my journey even further. The fascination these outcomes created on people’s lives confirmed my career path of choice. As an Architectural draughtsman however, I always felt limited in expressing my design ideas, as my work was mainly limited to developing other people’s concepts. I felt the need to express my own work. This crave drove me to further train as a designer, opening up opportunities to propagate and justify my creativity, and therefore the rebirth of my work ethos. An ethos of ambitious and self-driven designer who pushes designs to their limits. The use of CAD and especially ArchiCAD, now enables me to push my creative skills to a higher level, where daring and fearlessness can be identified as the icons for my work. I like experimenting and working with new innovations, ideas that integrate futuristic technology and materials to Augment building spaces, and improve human comfort and experience. My one ambition in life, is to create and revolutionise all disabled spaces to envious levels with all who engage with them. This challenges me to always be on the lookout for opportunities to utilise my creative skills, as I continue to pick up new ideas from all around me.

Design Services 1. DEFINING THE PROBLEM; For a Design solution to be achieved, Designers need to identify and define what it is they are trying to resolve. Designers must agree with the client what the problem is. In my case for example is, in this exercise, we are required to provide a retail store for “Sko Shoe Company 2. DEVELOPING IDEAS; This Is the project stage where research investigation is carried on the proposal. Gathering relevant
data that may be crucial to the projects formation. A proposal is created and deliberated upon by fellow designers. 3. PROTOTYPE; During this stage, ideas are drawn up and presented as sketches, showing design proposal and our interpretation of the brief. The aim in this stage of work being to gather all proposal reactions to forge a firm project
direction. 4. DEVELOPMENT; This is the point of the project where the design team produces working drawings and contract documents for site implementation, in conjunction with the rest of the building consultants who specialise on their expertise, such as structural, Mechanical eng, Electricians etc. This building team gets together and resolve their merging conflicts areas as part of the design process in order to help finalise the design.
5. ANALYSE; Finally, the designer meets the client on the final deliberation to review the final project. The review critically analyses the projects position against initial brief. If necessary adjustments may be necessary or maintain the targets as initially set out by the Client.

Some Interior Spaces - Legislations Sko Retail Space. The context for this project was to convert and existing urban space to a contemporary retail space in West London, so as to
be used as a Scandinavian shoe company retail outlet store. Their product range centres around natural urban footwear for men and women with a focus on individuality, natural form, tactile material and shoe making craft. The brief focus was to generate a proposal that is authentic, but with the sko company identity as well as maximising the potential of the site. Re-introducing an outlet that fits within an urban established setup that serves its Retail functional requirement while complying to all legal and legislation requirements that it pertains to. Below is my design solution showing
how various legislative conditions were met.

Some Interior Spaces - Legislations DDA Legislation 2005. Figure 01 and Figure 02 – Show my design response to the legislative requirement that requires Inclusivity for all. The solution observed the Disability Discrimination Act of 2005, and the Approved documents Part M(1) “says, in a visitable dwelling, reasonable provisions must be made for people to, gain access to, and use, the dwelling and its facilities.” “…so that disabled people are enabled to retain their dignity and independence, while doing what all of us take for granted.” in part 7.2(b) , ” provisions such as a ramped approach shall be provided. (Figure 03 ) Environmental Planning. This legislation that is meant to Protect our natural environment, limiting its destruction, is implemented in my solution through show-casing the natural beauty of stone cladded shop front and recycled wooden pallets covering the structural column. Apart from improving the front shop and the urban space, this frontage stands out, and sends out a strong message about the beauty there is in going natural.

Some Interior Spaces - Legislations Limit commercial impact upon visual landscape, The Planning Policy statement 17 (PPS) of the Planning service dwells on the outdoor advertising. In its general context, this legislation although recognises the importance of advertisement in a economic world says, care must however be exercised so that outdoor advertising does not impact negatively on the environment. This was the legislative provision taken into account while designing the Unique “Sko” signage in this shop front.

Some Interior Spaces - Legislations Promote sustainable design and materials – In keeping with the clients brief requirements, which was to generate a 3D design language based on the clients 2D graphic presence of natural material. This project shows my response solution proposal which used recycled material approach. These interior design language mainly uses Recycled wooden pallets, reducing landfill damping materials, thereby having a positive social and environmental impact. Some Interior Spaces - Construction Code Context By definition Construction Codes, or by other name the, Building Codes, are a sets of rules, that give specific guidance for minimum buildings standards, in terms of quality and safety. They are statutory controlled and managed through various governmental or private organs such as local council Authorities. In a typical designing and construction process, the order of events relating to these codes, would be as follows A) Plan Approval by Local Authorities, B)Inspection, during construction, and councils building inspectors, C) Certifications, to confirm the projects compliance to these Codes. In the UK, the Approval stage is in two parts; A) The Planning stage. General Overview proposal approvals
B) The Building Regulations Stage. My proposal required planning approvals as its frontage was being Altered, and had to seeks meet planning Standards of public spaces. But I will dwell more
On the building res for this exercise. C St Designs Ltd
Figure 02a – Existing Front
Figure 02b – Proposed Front
Some Interior Spaces - Construction Code Building Code.
As this proposal is on an already existing building, several codes may not necessarily be enforceable, like Part A of the Approved Documents. The section that sets the minimum structural Standards of the building, or Part C The section that sets the standards for site preparations, however, it is important to note, it is the responsibility of the designer to ensure where they are enforceable, like in the case of “Resistance to dampness” in an existing building Part C, these codes are strictly adhered to and followed. As You can see from the layout Figure 03,
The main codes that influenced my design solutions were ; A) Fire Safety (Part B), (Kitchens presence) B) Ventilation (Part F), (Landlocked spaces) C)Hygiene (Part G & F), Kitchen and Toilets
D) Heat loss, and SAP (Part L), E) Building Access, (Part M), Disable access to all. F) Glazing Material protection (Part N), G) Material quality workmanship standards

Figure 03 – Project Master plan Layout
Some Interior Spaces - Construction Code FIRE SAFETY – Part B of the approved Documents.
A) In section B1 the law requires that means of warning and Escape be provided. This was done by, specifying in my drawings “A mains operated smoke and Heat Alarm and comply to BSEN 14604 of 2005. While the smoke alarm gadgets devices to comply with BS 5446 – 2 of 2003. It says, “A fire escape route has be included in the design. Seen here on the left of the Kitchen space, With clear marked and illuminated sign saying “Fire Escape”. To meet BS 5499 Fire safety signs Standards.
B) In section B2 the law requires an Internal fire spread lining. The Kitchen walls are to be constructed with fire resistant material with all doors to be self closing made with material so as to provide a minimum 30 Key
min fire resistance. C) In section B5 the law requires provisions for the access and facilities for fire service. For this provision, the design included fire Hydrants, and Hose real, provided for in fire glass panelled glass door cupboard, for all to access
Amendments 2010 – 2013 The smoke and heat alarms should be mains-operated and conform to BS EN 14604: 2005, Smoke alarm devices or BS 54462:2003, Fire detection and fire alarm devices for dwellinghouses, Part 2 Specification for heat alarms, respectively.” C St Designs Ltd
Figure 04 – Kitchen Layout
Some Interior Spaces - Construction Code Kitchen Safety
There is however a difference between Code and Good practice, both of which have been taken into consideration in my Kitchen design. For example, the code may not determine one’s layout, but for safety reasons, I followed design practice guidelines to influenced my Kitchen Design. Such recommendations as minimum distance between hob and sink to be 600mm The gap between hob and units to be 760mm. Door swing should not swing to a hob. Provisions of at least 200mm work surface be provide on either side of a hob. No hob next to be placed a window, worktops to be not closer than 1 M between each
other, with supports at every 600mm.
Some critics hold the view that these Codes and practices, are “mean, illogical and an obstruction to creativity”, They argue that
these rules are generated towards safety, which is well and good, without the design considerations, therefore leaving Kitchen space with potential for design problems. Some critics hold the view that these Codes and practices, are “mean, illogical and an obstruction to creativity”, They argue that

Some Interior Spaces - Construction Code Ventilation (Part F),
The purpose of ventilation regulation, is to ensure adequate fresh air available to inhabitants of a space, while ‘stale’ air is extracted and expelled to the outside open space. This assume that the air outside of of good quality. The law further says, In part Fl(l) “Ventilation shall be provided for building users. (2). If mechanically ventilated, they must meet the qualifications of sub paragraph (1). Figure 06 Show the extractor hood over the cooker, with additional on the walls so as to meet the required, 15 – 60 ACR, 1/h, h-1. Part 4.8 adds, Such vents may be used to provide thermal comfort not covered by these
laws.
Other enforceable laws in my project, included. Sanitation, …Hot water Safety (Part G), This is the law that manages cold water supply into a building. (G1), Water efficiencies, (G2), Hot water supply and Systems (G3), Sanitary conveniences bathrooms and washing facilities (G4) Food preparation areas (G6) A requirement for
a sink to be provided in any places used for the preparation of food . In cases of dishwashers in a separate, additional sink is to be fitted.
Figure 06 – Kitchen Layout C St Designs Ltd
Some Interior Spaces - Construction Code Access to, and the use of Buildings – Part M As a disabled person, this is the part of the Code, I am most passionate about. It is divided into 3 categories namely;Visitable dwellings M4(1), Building Accesses M$(2), Disable access dwelling M4(3). This law although relatively newer than most other regulatory laws was introduced so as to ensure nobody is discriminated against when it come to using a public space. It was in response to “Equality Act 2010, and Equality act 2010 (Disability) Regulation. The law Part M4(l) requires that reasonable provision must be provided for all including wheelchair users, to enable them access to buildings which must be located on the entrance storey. In my design therefore, although I could not provide for a toilet nearer the restaurant, A Disabled toilet with WHB, (Marked in red in Fig 07) is provided for, with a 1 M access door, and a 1.4 M wide corridor access from the main space to the Toilet facility.
Amendments 2015, (enforceable to works started 1/10/2015 “The main changes include”, Dwellings Other buildings Sanitary convenience revised in visitable dwellings Accessible and adoptable dwellings

Project Management Design Solution Elements
An effective approach to carry out an this exercise is come up with a “project inventory List”, a list of project items and information that make up the project. For my “workplace designs” site, several elements are fabricated in a workshop elsewhere, and therefore the need to time manage and coordinate their delivery process if the project will be delivered on time. A project schedule helps to keep track of events on site and their submission time scale. Project Inventory,
Below is a list of Materials, Finishes, and Furniture schedules that helps the designer in procurement and material sourcing. In some cases this list may include, other schedule of elements such as ,
- Door Schedule - Window Schedules - Light fittings or any other schedule of element that makes up a project.
