Dear friends of Seton Hall Athletics, It is with great enthusiasm that we present our 2009-2010 annual report, which chronicles a year filled with significant achievements. On behalf of our more than 250 student-athletes, coaches and staff, I am pleased to report that we maintain great focus on our vision for excellence – academically and athletically. During the 2009-2010 academic year, we witnessed great progress toward fulfilling our goals on all fronts. Our student-athletes have demonstrated that they truly are students first. Most recently, senior volleyball player Melissa Bellomy was one of six finalists for the prestigious NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship program, and baseball graduate student Matt Singer and senior golfer Ryan Castanet were winners of the 2009-10 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award. The success in the classroom has carried over to the field of competition, with four individual BIG EAST champions, five All-BIG EAST selections and five NCAA qualifiers emerging from this past season. Our facilities continue to be developed in the past year and more improvements are on the horizon. The baseball and softball indoor batting cages saw the addition of new turf and netting. A new scoreboard for Owen T. Carroll field is in the planning stages along with renovations to our varsity weight room. All of these enhancements provide our student-athletes with a positive environment in to compete and learn, while assisting our coaches’ recruiting efforts. Clearly, the backbone of our success rests with our student-athletes, coaches and staff who represent our University with pride and integrity and we remain committed to improving and moving our program forward. Yet, the essence of our success is, and will continue to be, the many of you who support our student-athletes so generously, whether it is attending events, making gifts or providing your time and talent for our students benefit. It is only through your support that we continue to guide and encourage our Pirates as they prepare for productive, meaningful lives after graduation. Athletic Achievements
Men’s Basketball The men’s basketball team will have a fresh look this fall as Kevin Willard was introduced as the program’s 19th head coach on March 29. Willard inherits a team that went 19-13 last year and made its first post-season appearance (NIT), since 2006. The Pirates won six of their final eight regular season games and notched nine BIG EAST wins, also the most since 2006. Junior Jeremy Hazell was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and averaged over 20 points per game for a second straight year. Newcomer Herb Pope averaged a double-double and became the first Pirate to lead the BIG EAST in rebounds per game with 10.7. Both Hazell and Pope were also named to All-Met teams. Seniors John Garcia and Eugene Harvey graduated this summer.
Men’s Golf The men’s golf team continued to establish itself as a yearly BIG EAST title contender last year. The Pirates finished fourth (of 12 teams) at the 2010 BIG EAST Championship, only four strokes behind the 2010 champion, Georgetown. It marks the third straight year that Seton Hall has finished in the top-third of the conference tournament. As a team, the Pirates had five top-5 finishes out of 10 events, including a second place finish at the year-ending Cavalier Classic. Freshman Brandon Park was named the program’s first-ever BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. The Weston, Fla. native averaged a team-low 73.88 strokes per round and notched five top-10 finishes. Park tied for eighth among all individuals at the 2010 BIG EAST Championship with a 4-over-par, 75-73-69-217. Seniors JC Cardamone, Ryan Castanet and David Sampson graduated in May.
Men’s Soccer After a strong start to the season, the men’s soccer team concluded its 2009 campaign with a 4-10-3 record. The Pirates boasted a pair of Third Team All-BIG EAST selections as juniors Brayan Martinez and Andrew Welker were both honored by the conference’s coaches. Martinez totaled one goal and a team-high four assists despite missing time due to injury, while Welker led the Hall with eight goals and 19 points. Welker, who was tied for second in the BIG EAST with 1.19 points and 0.5 goals per game, was later named to the 2009 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. Another junior, Dritan Sela, was second on the squad with six goals, while senior goalkeeper Paul McHenry rose up the career charts to finish third all-time at Seton Hall in saves and tied for sixth in shutouts.
Women’s Basketball The women’s basketball program made a huge splash with the hiring of Anne Donovan, an icon in the game, as the third head coach in team history on March 29. Donovan, an Olympic gold medalist and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, will be charged with reviving the Pirates after a last-place finish in the BIG EAST during the 2009-10 season. Junior Ebonie Williams led the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game, while sophomore Kandice Green averaged 12.8 points and 8.7 rebounds. The Hall won eight games during the non-conference season, including a victory at Marshall. Seniors Ashley Booker, Letitia Curry and Nicole Emery completed their Seton Hall careers.

Athletic Achievements
Women’s Soccer Led by the United States Under-17 Women’s National Team coaching staff of Kazbek Tambi and Peter Gaglioti as well as former Princeton All-American Esmeralda Negron, the women’s soccer team took a step in the right direction during the 2009 season. Despite finishing the regular-season without clinching a BIG EAST playoff berth, the Pirates fielded a roster of 16 freshman and sophomores, including former United States U-17 Women’s National Team goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew. Having lost their top offensive threat in Katie Andreski to an injury prior to the season-opening match, the Pirates were led by junior and first-year captain Nicki Gross as well as two-time All-BIG EAST Third Team defender Megan Mills. The Hall will return nine starters from a year ago and 19 letterwinners overall including Gross and red-shirt senior Andreski.
Swimming & Diving The Men’s swimming and diving program recorded a 7-3 overall mark and a seventh place finish at the BIG EAST Championships, their best score since 2004-05. Two-time Seton Hall Male Athlete of the Year Kevin Webster led the way for the team recording 27 first place times and became the program’s first BIG EAST Champion since 2005. The junior earned his title in the 200-yard backstroke, after finishing third in the 200-yard individual medley and second in the 400-yard individual medley. The women’s swimming and diving program showed promising signs from its freshmen despite their 5-5 record. All five qualified for the BIG EAST Championships and combined to earn 18 first place times. Freshman Andrea Shuba carved her name into Seton Hall history by breaking the 200-yard backstroke and joining freshman Brenna O’Keefe, junior Brittany Henning, and sophomore Rose Virgilio to set new records in the 200 and 400-yard medley relays.
Baseball Featuring a roster of 25 freshman and sophomores, the Pirates strength was on the mound with junior ace Joe DiRocco and freshmen Jon Prosinski and Frank Morris, as they finished only two wins shy of a BIG EAST Playoff berth. DiRocco made 14 starts including a complete-game shutout against conference rival West Virginia as well as a one run, three hit performance at USF. He finished the year by earning a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod, a Pitcher of the Week award, and named to the All-NJCBA First Team. Prosinski finished his first campaign 3-3 with a team-leading 4.04 ERA. He defeated #11 Louisville and #19 Connecticut, the latter earning him a place on the Collegebaseball360.com weekly honor roll. Prior to those wins, the right-hander earned a 2010 Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge All-Tournament Honorable Mention. Morris made 12 appearances including nine starts pitching a complete game at Louisville surrendering only three runs on five hits.
Softball The Seton Hall softball team may have come up short on its goal of reaching the BIG EAST Championship this season, but will return all eight positional starters in 2011. The Pirates finished the year with a 19-31 overall record with an 8-14 mark in conference play. Senior Ashley Forsyth anchored a pitching staff that boasted a 2.80 ERA from March 31 until the end of the season. Forsyth posted 11 victories, a 3.07 ERA, and 123 strikeouts. She became the fourth pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game on April 8 at St. Peter’s, striking out a school-record 17 batters. Sophomore Kristen Kaelin was named to the NFCA All-Region Second team, compiling a .291 batting average with seven homers and 27 RBI. Juniors Nalin Bennett and Michelle Reed both hit over .300, batting at the top of the lineup, while freshman shortstop Brittany Hammer had a standout rookie season, batting .299.
Tennis The Pirate tennis squad rattled off five straight wins from February 13-March 9, and finished the 2010 spring season with a 7-11 record. Seton Hall will return five of its six singles starters, and will keep the majority of its doubles pairs together next year. Senior Denise Liebschner captained the team and posted a 10-7 record at the No. 1 singles position. Junior Belfin Sunbul also went 10-7, playing primarily at No. 3, finishing the season on a four-match win streak. The duo also paired up to form the No. 1 doubles team, and compiled a team-high six victories. Sophomores Elizabeth Verow, Courtney Kilarski, and Michelle Weerasinghe along with freshman Karina Cordero showed improvement as the season progressed and should take a step forward in 2010-11.

Volleyball After narrowly missing trips to the BIG EAST Championship the last two seasons, Seton Hall finally broke through to end a 15-year postseason drought. The Pirates went 12-19 overall, but their 6-8 mark in BIG EAST play earned them the eight-seed in the conference tournament. Senior Allie Matters was named SHU’s Co-Female Athlete of the Year after being named Second Team All-BIG EAST and breaking the single-season and career dig records. She also registered double-figure digs in 68 consecutive matches, which was the nation’s longest active streak. Freshman Olivia Trudeau emerged as the team’s setter, and led the BIG EAST, averaging 11.73 assists in conference matches. Junior Sarah Osmun earned her 1,000th career kill during the year, and is just 221 shy of becoming the school’s all-time leader.
Track & Field Three individuals and three relay teams each won BIG EAST Championships in the indoor and outdoor seasons. Senior Jernail Hayes won the indoor 500-meter dash, junior Chris Cox took the indoor 400-meter dash crown, while senior Louise Faye became the first Pirate to win the triple jump at the outdoor championships. The men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay squads were both victorious at the indoor meet, and the women’s quartet repeated the feat during the outdoor season. Hayes provided the Seton Hall track and field team’s highlight performance, finishing sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 400-meter dash to earn All-American honors. During the outdoor portion of the schedule, Hayes qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter dash along with both the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay teams.
Cross Country The women’s team placed 15th and the men took 14th place at the BIG EAST Championships. Both teams turned in their best performances at the Monmouth Invitational where the men finished third, paced by freshman Eloisa Paredes. The men were led by freshman Jared Hanko, who paced the men to a fifth-place finish.

Academic Achievements
Baseball’s graduate student Matt Singer and golf ’s senior Ryan Castanet were named 2009-2010 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award winners for their respective sports. The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic
credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Senior volleyball player Melissa Bellomy was one of six finalists for the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship. The Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarships were established in 1988 and recognize the contributions of former NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. The awards encourage academic achievement of student-athletes. Recipients of the award must have a 3.5 grade-point average (4.0 scale), demonstrate evidence of superior character and leadership and show that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on their personal and intellectual development. As a finalist, Bellomy received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund hosts several fundraising events throughout the year. Each of these unique events serve as one more way to support our athletics programs. They also serve as an excellent opportunity for Pirate Blue members, fans, and alumni to interact with our student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
Hall of Fame Ceremony February 2010 On February 4, 2010, Seton Hall inducted eight members into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Class of 2010 includes Phil Cundari ’89 (Baseball), Adrian Griffin ’96 (Men’s Basketball), Peter Matischak ’89 (Men’s Soccer), Megan Meyer ’05 (Softball), George Ring ’65 (Honorary Recipient), Geraldine Saintilus ’89 (Women’s Basketball), Eugene Smith ’01 (Men’s Golf), Mark Whitford ’93 (Honorary Recipient).
Meet and Greet Events May/June 2010 With the recent hires of men’s basketball coach, Kevin Willard and women’s basketball coach, Anne Donovan, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund hosted three “Meet the Coaches” receptions throughout the tri-state area. The events were held in Newark, NJ at the Mezzanine at Historical National Newark Building and was hosted by Robert and Al Frungillo, The Terrace Club in New York, New York hosted by Jim ’82 and Judy O’Brien and the Spring Lake Golf Club, Spring Lake, NJ hosted by Matt Regan ’86, Tom McEvoy and Corny Durkin. Each event provided an atmosphere for our alumni to interact with our new coaches and created excitement for the upcoming season.

Terrific Twosome Golf Outing July/August 2009 The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund held its annual Terrific Twosome Golf Outing on June 8th at Plainfield Country Club and on August 17th at Spring Lake Golf Club. They also serve as an excellent opportunity for Pirate Blue members, fans, and alumni to interact with our student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
Beefsteak Tip-Off Dinner October 2009 The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund hosted the inaugural Beefsteak Tip-Off dinner on October 8, 2009 on the Seton Hall campus. With a sell-out crowd of over 325 alumni, friends and fans, our beefsteak dinner proved to be the perfect way to start the season.
Coach Mike Sheppard Golf Outing October 2009 The Coach Mike Sheppard Golf Outing is held annually to raise funds for the Seton Hall Baseball program. This year’s outing was held on October 19, 2009 at Maplewood Golf Club.
Pirate Varsity Club Events The Pirate Varsity Club encourages former studentathletes to stay connected to their Alma Mater as an important part of the Pirate team. PVC members receive exclusive benefits including various alumni events throughout the year.

Staff Hires On Wednesday, March 31, 2010, Seton Hall University officially introduced Anne Donovan as it’s new women’s basketball head coach and Kevin Willard as new men’s basketball head coach. The introductions were made before Seton Hall’s press core and a sizeable group of Pirates’ fans in Walsh Gym. Willard, 34, becomes the 19th head coach in Seton Hall history and joins the Pirates after three years as head coach of the Iona College men’s basketball team. In 2007, he inherited a Gaels team that had won just two games the prior season. Only three seasons later, Willard guided Iona to a 21-10 overall record and was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the year. During his first year as a head coach, the 2007-08 season, the Gaels finished with 10 more victories than the previous year, one of the top turnarounds in NCAA Div. I. He instilled his foundation of up tempo, aggressive play with an emphasis on having fun playing the game of basketball to his young team. Donovan is currently the head coach of the WNBA’s New York Liberty, having taken over on an interim basis halfway through the 2009 regular season. She will remain on the sidelines for the Liberty through the 2010 season. She owns a remarkable 132-10 (.930) all-time record on the sidelines for USA Basketball. As head coach, she led the 2008 United States Women’s Senior National Team to gold in Beijing and as a result was chosen with Mike Krzyzewski as co-recipient of the 2008 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year award. Donovan also helped the U.S. capture gold at the Olympics in 1998 and 2004 as an assistant coach. Sara Doell was named the first head coach of Seton Hall’s new women’s golf program on Friday, March 26, 2010. Doell came to Seton Hall with a wealth of golf knowledge having spent the last four and a half years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Penn State. The Pirates will compete for the first time this fall.

Prior to her work as an assistant coach with the Nittany Lions, Doell spent more than four years as an assistant golf professional at Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. 2009-2010 Annual Report • 15

Seton Hall’s athletes were deeply involved in the community once again this year, not only continuing many of the programs from previous years, but starting many new relationships with organizations in the northern New Jersey area. This year, the Pirates began a relationship with The Phoenix Center, a school for autistic and special needs students. The students were hosted on the Seton Hall campus by various teams to learn about a college lifestyle and to learn physical and mental skills through sports. The baseball team started a new initiative at the school when it adopted a child fighting a brain tumor through the Friends of Jaclyn organization. The team writes inspirational messages to their new teammate as he fights his battle with a brain tumor. The Pen Pal Program, the oldest and one of the most successful programs at the Hall, expanded to two schools, St. Joseph in East Orange and St. Francis Xavier in Newark. Over 50 student-athletes corresponded with seventh graders throughout the year, culminating with the youngsters taking a trip to the Seton Hall campus in April to meet their pen pals. One of the most popular programs this year was the PB&J challenge, with teams competing against each other to make the most peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in 20 minutes. Over 100 student athletes attended and made 1200 sandwiches for the St. Joseph’s soup kitchen. Food preparation was a popular outreach activity as students decorated holiday cookies and holiday cards and delivered them to children at the PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick. To continue to spread holiday cheer, the Pirates visited the Newark Boys and Girls Club to help the children with homework and other afterschool activities and lead the crowd in a few carols. Seton Hall’s student-athletes are continually coming up with creative and fun ways to connect with and give back to the community. 16 • Seton Hall University
