Schellscheidt’s coaching philosophy is to have his players learn by playing, which has led to him becoming the winningest coach in the program’s history, compiling a 215-137-38 record and a 102-6916 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. He has guided the Pirates to two BIG EAST Championships, nine NCAA Tournament berths, seven conference title game appearances and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2001, while having just one losing season in 19 years. Under Schellscheidt’s direction the Pirates have enjoyed some of their most successful campaigns in the program’s history. Schellscheidt came to Seton Hall in 1988 after a one-year stint as assistant coach at Princeton University and quickly established SHU as a national power. In his first season at SHU, Schellscheidt piloted the team to 164-4 record and a final No. 3 ranking, its highest ever. The Pirates won their third straight BIG EAST title and reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before losing to eventual national champion Indiana. In 2006, Schellscheidt won his 200th career game in a 2-0 victory over Monmouth on September 1. A 13-4-3 mark in 2005 was the 17th winning season under his guidance as SHU finished second in the BIG EAST’s Blue Division. Schellscheidt’s staff was named BIG EAST

championship – a 1-0 victory at second-seeded and heavily favored Virginia. The win earned the Pirates a berth in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1992.
The Pirates made their 7th appearance in a BIG EAST title game in 2004 after becoming the first No. 8 seed in the BIG EAST to win a game in the league tournament. Schellscheidt’s squad started its run in the quarterfinals by defeating fourth-ranked Notre Dame in penalty-kicks. Despite falling on penalty-kicks to Connecticut in the championship, SHU advanced to the NCAA’s and finished with a 12-7-3 mark. Schellscheidt’s leadership also earned him NSCAA/adidas Middle-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honors.
Schellscheidt’s 2000 squad finished with a 13-7 record and a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST Tournament after the fifth-seeded Pirates knocked off top-seeded and eventual national champion Connecticut, 3-2, in overtime to advance to the championship game. Seton Hall was ranked as high as 15th in the nation in the NSCAA/adidas poll, including first in the Mid-Atlantic region.
After gaining an at-large berth to the 2001 NCAA Tournament, Seton Hall earned a first-round win over Coastal Carolina before recording the upset of the
2010 REVIEW
The 1998 squad spent several weeks in the NSCAA top 25 and had an impressive 3-2 record against ranked teams. On October 25, Schellscheidt guided Seton Hall to a 2-1 win over No. 1 Connecticut, marking the first time a Pirate soccer team had defeated a top-ranked opponent. For his efforts, he was named New Jersey Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.
RECORD BOOK
Schellscheidt reached a milestone when he recorded his 100th career victory with a 3-0 win over West Virginia on October 20, 1996. Nearly a year later, the Pirates earned a 5-1 win over Providence, giving Schellscheidt his 107th win as head coach at Seton Hall, passing Nick Menza (1958-84), who retired with 106 career victories. His 1995 squad won 10 games and climbed as high as 16th nationally, while his 1994 team advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals and went 12-6, with Schellscheidt being named the New Jersey Coach of the Year.
SETON HALL UNIVERSITY
Under Schellscheidt’s tutelage, the Pirates have become a tough opponent for ranked teams to face, especially at Owen T. Carroll Field. Despite fielding a team with just three seniors in 2003, SHU recorded wins over No. 6 St. John’s and at No. 14 Virginia, en route to another NCAA bid and a spot in the Top 25. The 2002 season saw another NCAA bid and two more wins over ranked opponents. SHU opened the year with a win over No. 6 UConn, a win that propelled the Pirates into the Top 10, and followed that with a win over No. 21 Penn State later in the year. The two-year run saw SHU go an impressive 14-1-1 at home, including a perfect 7-0-1 mark in 2003, which was the start of a 17-game unbeaten streak at Owen T.

The Pirates rebounded in 1990 going 11-8-2, claiming the regular-season league crown, reaching the BIG EAST title match, while making its fifth NCAA tournament appearance in six years. The success continued in 1991 as the Pirates posted their finest BIG EAST record at 7-1 and won the conference title en route to an NCAA Second Round berth and a No. 15 national ranking by the ISAA. The following season was almost an exact repeat as the 1992 squad went 12-7-3, reached the BIG EAST Championship, and again went to the NCAA Second Round. That season also saw the program host the firstever NCAA contest on Seton Hall’s campus.

W
ith a plethora of young talent, the Seton Hall men’s soccer team will aim to turn the page from a difficult 2010 season. Head coach Manny Schellscheidt, now in his 24th season at the helm has built this year’s team with speed and athleticism in hopes to return to the Pirates to BIG EAST contention.
COACHING STAFF
“We lost 11 players, so it means a lot of new faces,” stated Schellscheidt. “So we’re a little bit in a rebuilding cycle here, there’s no question. We feel that the sophomore class will have to carry a lot of weight and we also anticipate that some of the freshman will get a fair amount of playing time. And then of course, we do not have a lot of upperclassmen to begin with.” “I would say we are very optimistic about the talent,” Schellscheidt continued. “But obviously we have a good number of inexperienced players. So experience may be lacking, but in terms of talent I think we feel good about it.”
2011 SEASON
Two of those upperclassmen have impressed Schellscheidt by taking on a leadership role that was vacated with the loss of three-year co-captains Hayden Morris and Steven Rose to graduation are seniors Joe Baker and Mike Dietze.
PIRATE PROFILES
Baker is a central defender who emerged as a starter after missing the first six games due to injury. Dietze has seen limited playing time in three seasons, but with all four starting midfielders gone from last year’s squad, he has a chance to see significant action in his final campaign. “Joe and Mike have taken on a little bit of a real leadership role,” said Schellscheidt. “As a center back, Joe is a vocal leader, making sure that guys do what they are supposed to do.
So, from the qualities and the initiative that you need from a captain, I think that they are filling that hole pretty good.” In goal, sophomore transfer Anthony Reichwaldt is slated to be the primary starter while incumbent Kevin Bonder recovers from an offseason surgery. Reichwaldt spent one year at Concordia College, an NAIA program in Nebraska before enlisting in the military and serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Bonder started 10 games as a freshman, but was injured off and on throughout 2010.
2010 REVIEW
“At the moment, the two guys that are in the lead are Anthony Reichwaldt and Mario DeClerico,” Schellscheidt proclaimed. “Kevin played well when he was at full strength last year and will be in the mix once he gets healthy.” Schellscheidt believes that his backfield, anchored by Baker and another senior Bradley Kerstetter.
RECORD BOOK
“Defense, I’m actually pretty happy with things,” said the SHU Hall of Famer. especially with what we have coming back and the new guys coming in. One of the problems last year was that we had often given up easy goals and we hopefully we can do better in that department. Clearly, the two seniors Kerstetter and Baker, are the more experienced players, and the rest we’ll fill out.
SETON HALL UNIVERSITY
Chris Garcia and Christian Battistesa also saw significant action on the left and right side and will be competing for time with a trio of freshmen. Bolu Akinyode, Jason Wellington, and Mateusz Brela all have strong resumes heading into their rookie seasons and the head coach will not hesitate to throw them into the fire.
12
Even though Schellscheidt expects some growing pains with such a youthful side, the ultimate goal of reaching the postseason is not out of his sights.
2011 SEASON
“We are pretty excited, players and staff together for this upcoming year and hope that we can move this thing forward again and put ourselves where we used to be where we were regular in the BIG EAST Championship and getting to the NCAA Tournament,” said Schellscheidt. “So that’s always been the goal and it will never change.”
COACHING STAFF
“Max is definitely a guy we are bringing back and have hopes for to having a good second year,” Schellscheidt said. “Then we have Cody Hess, we expect him to be helping us out in the forward line. Also, Andrew LoManto can play forward and midfield and we also think that Jeremy Witherspoon might get a spot since he has shown well in the brief time he’s been out there. So we have few guys that will definitely push each other for trying to compete for the spots on the field.”

PIRATE PROFILES
“I think they are pretty good additions that can step in and get the job done,” Schellscheidt said. “They give us some speed, they are mobile, they are athletic, and they’re fast guys. So that is always important, that you have recovery speed.” Working our way out to midfield, there are four spots up for grabs and with several players recovering from lingering knocks Schellscheidt is looking forward to seeing who will emerge.
2010 REVIEW
“What we have at the moment, it would probably be Mike Dietze on the right, Konrad Plewa and Kai Greene in the middle, they are two freshman, and Adriano Gabriele on the left. So that is the starting midfield at this time. Of course, the likes of Victor Manisalvas and Gio Zammiello are all options once they get fully recovered from minor injuries. Damian Bziukiewicz is another promising freshman, but he has not been at full speed yet either. We think these guys could become important players.”
RECORD BOOK
“We are actually pretty happy with Kai and Konrad,” continued Schellscheidt. “ I’m pretty keen on Konrad being probably the one from all the freshman getting a very considerable amount of playing time, he could easily become a fixture in the midfield. So from what we have seen up until now, and I have the same feeling about Kai. To me they are actually two very strong guys that will definitely challenge the establishment in the midfield, that’s for sure.”

Sophomore Max Garcia returns at forward, with the other spot of Schellscheidt’s formation likely to be taken by a newcomer. THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Championship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households. The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 201112 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville). The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games. Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprecedented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louisville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group.
Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. 2010 REVIEW
In our valued-centered curricula, programs and extracurricular activities, we focus on academics and devleopment of the individual. Our graduates continue to prove themselves as leaders in their professions and communities. Seton Hall gives you all the resources you would find in a large university. But, with only 5,200 undergraduates and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio, you get the personal attention of a small liberal arts college.

Seton Hall is about caring and sharing - to pass a torch to students that is burning brighter than the one passed to us. Tony Lovisick, PH.D. Chair, Finance and Legal Studies Stillman School of Business
Our faculty comprised of a distinguished group of scholars that have earned advanced degrees both in the U.S. and abroad. You will study alongside these learned men and women collaborating with them in developing new concepts and researching meaningful topics. And don’t think they won’t be involved in your academic careers - personal attention is at the heart of academic excellence.

I give the highest importance to my contact with students ... they are the school’s most important asset. Ambassador s. azmat hassan Senior Faculty Associate Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations
The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Millburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and your are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. And don’t forget about the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.
Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

PATRICK
LYONS
Director of Athletics and Recreational Services
Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.
of the soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, Iona created Rice Oval Softball field, the first on-campus home for the softball program.
Lyons comes to Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and 21 Division I athletic programs. He has also shown a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.
Before elevating to his current role, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. This included, but was not limited to, all fundraising activities and marketing for the department including the annual golf tournament, sponsorships, and the annual fund.
Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department has seen unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. The men’s cross country team continued its storied success earning a second straight national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship in November 2008. The program has finished in the Top-10 at the national championship in each of the last nine years. Along with the University of Wisconsin, no other program has seen the same success. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have established a reputation for being one of the top programs in the MAAC. The women enjoyed their most successful five-year stint in program history and have made three postseason appearances in the last four seasons. The men’s program earned an NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, won 21 games in 2009-10 and has continued to rank among the leaders in the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area. Other Gael programs that saw success under Lyons tutelage have been the women’s cross country team with five straight MAAC Championships, the softball program earning its first ever bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010, the men’s soccer program with a MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and a MAAC finals appearance in 2010. The volleyball team reached the NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the MAAC finals in 2010. In addition, Iona’s women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo programs continued to excel in 2009-10. Where Lyons truly made his mark at Iona has been in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Among several enhancements, the most dramatic and impressive changes were the opening of both the Hynes Athletics Center and the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center in January of 2006. Lyons also oversaw the complete renovation of the varsity locker rooms - where each program now has its own space for the first time in school history, the addition of a video screening room for its athletic programs as well as the resurfacing of both the Hynes Center basketball/volleyball arena floor and the surface of Mazzella Field, home
80
Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He oversaw all NCAA, MAAC, and institutional policies and regulations, as well as team scheduling, student-athlete financial aid, the student-athlete advisory committee, and payroll for all staff as well as student-workers. Lyons also coordinated the NCAA certification process, from the self study to on-campus visits. As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons. A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College. Lyons has served on several committees at the national and conference level. He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships and Sports Management Cabinet where he serves as a liaison to the men’s and women’s ice hockey committees. Lyons served as the Chairman of MAAC Cross Country Committee and previously as chairman of the MAAC Committee on Athletics Administration. He also serves on the MAAC Marketing and Strategic Planning Committees. Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, a pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical faculty at Columbia University.
