THOR GUARD lightning prediction system
16
Owen T. Carroll Field, Ivy Hill Park Fields and the Campus Tennis Courts are now equipped with the THOR GUARD Lightning Prediction System. This system makes calculations predicting lightning’s occurrence, even though there may be no visible evidence of lightning. Lightning “detection” systems require the occurrence of an actual lightning strike before a warning is given, which in many times is too late. THOR GUARD predicts the probability of a lightning hazard in an area up to 25 square miles. More importantly, it also provides a specific reading of the risk in our immediate area. THOR GUARD can also project the potential for deadly “bolts out of the blue,” which are strikes that seem to come from nowhere and cause a high percentage of lightning fatalities. The system will be programmed to be “ON” during scheduled athletic and recreational events, practices, and games. When the system is “ON” and a lightning storm is in the area a 15 second horn will be sounded. If the warning horn sounds during a scheduled event at these facilities, a public announcement will be broadcasted with instructions for all spectators to follow. During any practice or event, the following procedures are recommended when Thor Guard is activated: • •
•
All athletes, coaches and officials should evacuate the outdoor facility. All spectators should seek shelter immediately in their vehicles and roll up their windows. If addi tional shelter is needed, please exit to the Richie Regan Recreation & Athletic Center • When it is safe to return, an “all clear” will be sounded. An “all clear” is indicated by 3 short, 5 second horn blasts. The NCAA requires all teams to wait 30 minutes after the all clear signal has been given.
For more information about the Thor Guard system, the website address has been provided:

Seton Hall University Athletics Communications Policies Seton Hall University’s general policy addressing relations with the mass media (newspapers, magazines, television, radio) is one in which university personnel deal openly, honestly, quickly, and accurately with media personnel to provide the media with all information about the university. The Athletics Department also adheres to a strong policy that protects the individual’s rights of privacy. The Assistant Athletics Director / Communications, or his designee, is the official spokesperson for the University on issues concerning the athletic department. The principles as incorporated within this general policy are: 1. All press releases from the Seton Hall Athletics Department are issued from the Office of Athletics Communications which sends the release to appropriate media, and forwards a copy of the release to the originating office. 2. All requests for interviews should be directed through Matt Sweeney and his office. If a member of the media reaches out to a coach or player directly, they will be instructed to first contact Athletics Communications. 3. Media interview requests are required to come through the Athletics Communications Office with at least 24 hours notice. It is the policy of the Athletics Communications Office to arrange interviews at a mutual time for both the student-athlete or coach, and the media member. All classes and team responsibilities will take precedent over interviews. 4. It is the policy of the Athletics Communications Office to issue credentials only to members of the media. Fan web sites, blogs and message boards do not fall into this category and no student-athlete or coach will be subjected to interview requests from non-media sources. 5. The men’s basketball team’s locker room is open to the media. Once Coach Willard completes his press conference, the locker room will open for player interviews. The Athletics Communications Office reserves the right to close the locker room at any time.. 6. The Athletics Communications Office reserves the right to revoke credentials for home events at any time for any reason. 7. Student-athletes will not be expected to grant interviews on the day of a game, until the contest is completed, barring any special circumstances.
