IN LOVING MEMORY OF JAKE GRECCO ONCE A PIRATE, ALWAYS A PIRATE

Last season, the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams teamed up in support of Jake ‘The Hero” Grecco, a 7-year-old boy from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, who was diagnosed with Gliomatosis Cerebri, a malignant brain tumor. The Pirates wore grey caps all season long in recognition of his fight and paid him a surprise visit at school. Jake inspired everyone him with his strength and bravery, imparting those qualities onto his new friends in blue and white. Although he ultimately lost his battle, he lives on in the minds and hearts of all those who were lucky enough to get to know him.

SEASON PREVIEW

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW During its first 12 seasons under the stewardship of head coach Ron Farina, the Seton Hall swimming & diving program has established a standard of excellence both in and out of the pool. With Farina at the helm, the Pirates have set new school records in 36 different events, seven of which were re-written last year. SHU has also captured four individual BIG EAST championships during his tenure. Former swimmer Kevin Webster (’11) took home three of those titles, capping his career by earning BIG EAST Most Outstanding Swimmer honors in 2011. In the classroom, the Pirate program is among the nation’s elite as both the men’s and women’s squads earned their 12th consecutive CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Awards in 2011-12, with the men’s team posting the 12th highest overall GPA among all qualifying schools. Between the two teams, the program also produced 32 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars a year ago, pushing the total to 264 under Farina’s guidance. “I think we have been able to find a nice balance here,” said Farina. “Being in the upper-tier of the conference and right there with some of the best programs in America is something we are very proud of. We have proven that we can compete at a high level and perform in the classroom at the same time.” When it comes to competition, a seasoned core of accomplished veterans coupled with the arrival of one of the largest and deepest recruiting classes in program history has the Pirates poised to continue the tradition of success in 2012-13. SHU sent 16 members of the men’s team to the conference championship meet last season and posted an impressive 9-2 dual meet record that included wins in two out of three matchups with BIG EAST opponents. In his time in South Orange, Farina has compiled an 88-37 (.704) dual meet record on the men’s side. “The men have been very successful in terms of dual meets in recent years and I expect that consistency to continue this year,” said Farina. To achieve such success, the Pirates will rely heavily on a group of talented seniors that is wellequipped to lead the team into the new-year. Co-captains Austin Acheson (Olathe, Kan.) and Ryan O’Shaughnessy (Coral Springs, Fla.) will spearhead the effort after productive junior campaigns. Last season, Acheson led the Pirates by meeting BIG EAST qualifying standards in seven different events, followed closely by O’Shaughnessy with six. Acheson is also one of the four current team members whose name sits on the record board, swimming as part of the record-setting 800-yard freestyle event in 2009-10. Senior Austin Acheson The two captains are joined by classmates Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.) and Brian Pauling (Sewell, N.J.) in providing the team’s veteran presence. Keyser is coming off a year in which he out-swam competitors from seven other schools to win the mile event at the Patriot Invitational and went on to place 18th in the same event at the BIG EAST Championships. A three-time BIG EAST Championship qualifier, Pauling set new personal records in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle in 2011-12 and contributed key points in several close dual meet wins for The Hall.

“This year, the men’s squad is different from the women in that there is no question that the leadership comes from our seniors,” said Farina. “These are guys that have been through it before and know what it takes to be successful over the course of a season. Their influence is something that will benefit the entire team as the year progresses.” The 2012-13 version of the Pirates also includes seven juniors, all of whom qualified for the conference championship twice as underINTRO

SEASON PREVIEW

classmen. Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) followed up a freshman year after which he was named Seton Hall Co-Freshman Male Athlete of the Year with a stellar sophomore campaign. Benson was a part of the team’s fastest relay efforts on the year in four different events. An individual scorer for the Pirates at BIG EAST, he produced season-best times in three individual events and swimming as part of a record-breaking 400-yard freestyle relay team at the meet. That record-setting squad also included classmate Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.). Lacus set two new personal marks as a sophomore and twice swept both freestyle events for the Pirates during a dual meet (Providence and Marist). He closed the year by matching his fastest 50-yard freestyle time of the year on the conference’s biggest stage. Other key contributors in the group include Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) and Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.). Black will attempt to best his efforts from a season ago that saw him post 10th place finishes in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly at the Patriot Invitational and routinely capture valuable points in butterfly events during dual meets. Naumann was a steady contributor in both freestyle and butterfly events last season, swimming the fastest 200-yard butterfly time of any Pirate and closing the year with a career-best mark in the 200-yard freestyle at the BIG EAST Championships. The trio of Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.), Evan Forbes (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and Jon Ropson (McKinney, Texas) completes a junior class that is expected to have a large impact in their third year on campus.

Junior Matt Benson

Amid returning swimmers, DeLisio and Ropson ranked among the leaders with qualifying times in four different events each last season. At the conference championship, both enjoyed the best meet of their respective careers as DeLisio set three different personal marks and Ropson surpassed his previous career-bests in two events.

A versatile performer for the Pirates, Forbes took a leap forward in the backstroke in his second year in blue and white. The Jersey product swam to new career-bests in the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes while meeting qualifying standards in both. “We are fortunate to have a really good crop of juniors behind our seniors this year,” praised Farina. “They are the biggest class on our team and they all have the potential to be a threat for us. Matt Benson scored for us at BIG EAST last year and I think Greg [Black], Joey [Lacus] and Tyler [Naumann] have the capability to do the same. With their progression as individuals, they could help us bump up a few spots in relay events as well. Watch out for Ian DeLisio, Jon Ropson and Evan Forbes as they continue to develop as well.” Though small, the Pirates’ three-man sophomore class has the potential to be largely impactful. In the pool, both Richard Lessard (Wethersfield, Conn.) and James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) turned in a number of quality performances. Lessard swam season-fastest times in four different events over a three-day span at the Patriot Invitational. Logan steadily improved as the year progressed and by season’s end, only O’Shaughnessy had posted faster times in the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes. He closed his first year by recording a top-20 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and just missing out on another in the 200-yard breaststroke (21st) while posting three personal records at the BIG EAST Championships. The only individual school record holder on the current roster; Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) returns for his second season after a highly productive debut campaign from the diving board. Mitchell established the new school record from the one-meter board in a win at Providence, just one of seven event victories for him on the year. A BIG EAST qualifier from both one and three-meters, he finished in the top-20 in each competition. Mitchell scored for the Pirates by placing 15th in the three-meter dive and was just outside the consolation round from one-meter, placing 17th. “Our freshmen came on and did a great job for us last year, which is not an easy thing to do,” said Farina. “Ben was tremendous and really added a dimension to our team that we didn’t have before. Now he’s gotten a taste of competition and he’s come back a lot more confident and in the right frame of mind. JC [Logan] is someone who continually got better for us, to the point where he almost scored at BIG EAST and I expect him to continue to elevate his performance this season.” Joining the Pirates’ 14 returnees is a group of five incoming freshmen. Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) is slated to aid the squad’s efforts in backstroke and freestyle while Andrew William (Bayonne, N.J.) will compete in butterfly and individual medley events.

SEASON PREVIEW Steve Hausmann (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Jersey-product Joey Giovine will both compete in breaststroke events. Hausmann will mix in some distance freestyle while Giovine will see time in individual medley races. After captaining Blue Valley North to a 6A Kansas state championship in 2011 and a runner-up finish in 2012, Eric Davidson (Overland Park, Kan.) will join Ben Mitchell on the diving board for SHU. “I think we brought in a set of guys who can push to be a factor from day one,” said Farina. “With freshmen, it is about getting them in the pool and acclimated to collegiate competition. These are guys that are going to play an important role for us and could be pushing to score for us by the end of the season as well.” “Our men’s team is one of the deepest we have had here,” continued Farina. “Now it comes down to seasoning them and making sure they are all peaking at the same time. I believe we have built a schedule that should play into that.” The aforementioned schedule is a challenging slate that stands between the Pirates and the 2013 BIG EAST Championships. It features showdowns with some familiar foes as well as conference rivals. The team will also swim in two in-season invitational-style events. The 2012-13 season kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when SHU hosts a head-to-head matchup with Montclair State. Other home dates include Providence (Sat, Nov. 3) and Marist on Saturday, Jan. 26, a meet that will serve as Senior Day for the Pirates. SHU will travel to take on Rider (Oct. 18), Iona (Oct. 30), Saint Peter’s (Nov. 9) in one-on-one matchups prior to their winter training trip to Puerto Rico. BIG EAST adversaries Villanova (Jan. 15) and Connecticut (Jan. 19) await the Pirates in head-to-head competition after the break. The schedule also includes a trip to Baltimore, Md. to swim against Drexel, Lafayette and hosts Loyola (MD) in a quad meet (Oct. 27). The Pirates will also take part in the Patriot Invitational (Nov. 15-17) and the Bucknell Invitational (Feb. 2) before closing the regular season with a meet against Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Piscataway. “We changed up our schedule a little bit this year,” said Farina. “It’s always a good meet when we swim against Rider and it serves as a barometer for us early in the season. We host Providence in our BIG EAST opener, a meet that we are very much looking forward to. The Patriot is a great event for us because it gives us a chance to rest the kids and give them a chance to hit some cuts in some different events. We’ll head to Puerto Rico in the winter and continue our training. In the second half of the year, we’ll really need to be on our game to beat teams like UConn, Villanova and Marist. UConn is a meet that gives the kids a good feel for what to expect at the conference championships, but we go up against a number of BIG EAST teams during that stretch which should be a good test for us.” Helping Farina guide the Pirates through the demanding schedule will be a pair of second-year assistants in Kara Lennon (’98) and diving coach P.J. Hughes (’10). Lennon and Hughes both previously competed for the Pirates and each joined the coaching staff prior to the 2011-12 season. “I think Kara and PJ both took a lot away from their first year,” said Farina. “They both competed here but it is different being on the other side. Now, they know what the competition is like and they know what they are up against. On the recruiting trail, they both worked extremely hard and their time and effort really paid off. They have learned a lot since coming on. As a staff, we continue to grow and I think that is a big part of moving forward as a program.” Another former Pirate, Andrew Le Blanc (’06), also returns to the program for his second season as volunteer assistant coach. Following the regular season, SHU will head to the Midwest for the conference championships. The 2013 BIG EAST Championships will be held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. on Feb. 27Mar. 2. The Pirates will be looking to improve on last season’s eighth place team finish after posting a program-best sixth place finish the year before. “This year the BIG EAST meet is a week or so later than it usually is, giving us some extra time to pre- 2012-13 Seniors: Brian Pauling, Austin Acheson, Ryan O’Shaughnessy pare and focus,” Farina stated. “IUPUI is a very prestigious pool; it’s sort of like playing in the coliseum and Ian Keyser in Los Angeles. It’s also a very fast pool and serves as a great venue for a championship meet.” “This year we are looking for that second swim at BIG EAST,” continued Farina. “Qualifying is nice, but if we’re in a relay we want to set a record and in individual races, we’re looking to score. I know this team has the ability to get those things done for us.”

SETON HALL

COACHING STAFF RON FARINA Head Coach 13th Season Rutgers 1993

Ron Farina enters his 13th season as head coach of the Seton Hall men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams and is coming off one of the most successful seasons of his tenure. Last year Seton Hall saw more than 85 percent of its swimmers qualify for BIG EAST Championship competition. The women re-wrote five school records while the men broke two, and posted a 9-2 dual meet record. Each program also took home a 12th consecutive CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Award, with the men ranking 12th in the entire nation in team GPA. The Pirates also produced 32 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars, pushing its total to 264 under Farina’s guidance. In 2010-11, senior Kevin Webster became the first student-athlete in program history to compete at the NCAA Championships. Farina also coached the men’s team to a sixth-place showing at the BIG EAST Championship, the highest in program history, while the women’s team came in ninth, its best finish since 2005. Webster also became the first swimmer in school history to be named Most Outstanding Male Swimmer at the BIG EAST Championships after winning the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke conference titles. Webster is not the only Pirate to capture a BIG EAST title under Farina as Jack Leavitt (2005,100-Backstroke) also accomplished the feat. Since his hiring, Farina has brought a new level of commitment to the Pirate programs. Since the 2000-01 season, Farina’s swimmers have earned wins against BIG EAST rivals Georgetown, Rutgers, Syracuse, Providence and Villanova, recorded 15 NCAA consideration standards, over 40 Senior National qualifiers, three Olympic Trial qualifiers, and shattered over 50 school records. In 2008-09 he traveled to Atlanta with eight members of the men’s team to compete in the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals in which his Pirates broke six school records, a conference record, and placed eighth overall ahead of Big Ten power-house Indiana. winter training trip 2011-12 pirates in

The training trip is an important part of our season. In the grind of the winter, it is a nice change of pace to get somewhere sunny as we continue to work towards the championship season. Our team gets to bond and enjoy the surroundings, but at the same time they are working towards elevating their performance. - Head Coach Ron Farina

SUMMER 2012: A pIRATE POSTCARD FROM joey lacus

(As appeared on SHUPirates.com)

Greetings Pirate Fans from Wethersfield, Connecticut! Summer is off to a great start in the Constitution State! Some wonderful weather has paved the way for one of my hobbies, gardening, to get off to a great start. I recently ordered a new citrus tree, lime, which now accompanies my lemon and fig trees. Also, my vegetable garden has been planted for about three weeks now. I’m just your regular green-thumb growing the average tomato, squash, and green beans... nothing too crazy. Now the painstaking part of waiting for it all to grow begins. Outside of working around the house, I work at a seafood restaurant five days a week where I wash dishes as well as take tables, clean, prep, and sometimes even bartend. It’s a big change of pace from my desk job at Pirate Blue during the school year, and I love it! It does however create a tight schedule because of my training. I have been swimming four days a week for my club team, Laurel East Hartford YMCA, which is out of East Hartford, CT. My club coach has been doing a fantastic job of getting me back into shape. We have been focusing a lot on my stroke, refining it, and making it more efficient. I decided early on that I wasn’t going to be swimming many meets this summer, just training a great deal and working on technique more. So far it has been paying off and I have a meet coming up next weekend in Springfield, Mass., hopefully we will see a difference in my racing. My biggest goal for the next year is to qualify for USA Swimming Senior Nationals. The event is held every December in a different location every year. This is the only USA Swimming event that the NCAA allows Division I schools to participate in during the season. Some of the qualifying times are a only tenth off of the Olympic Trial Qualifications. Making that meet would mean a lot, especially to see how much I have grown over the last two years with the help of Coach Farina and his staff, our strength & conditioning coach Angelo Gingerelli and of course, my club coach, Kaeley Stiennagel. Next season is starting later then normal, due to a late scheduling of the BIG EAST Championship at IUPUI, but I am really hoping that the hard work pays off and I post more time drops and lifetime bests. 2012 is a big summer for swimming in general and August can’t come soon enough, though, not because of school, but because of the Olympics! I lucked out and was able to see the entire Olympic Village in London when I flew into London Heathrow for a layover during my trip home from Dublin. It looks amazing; the pool looks like a spaceship from the game “Halo,” and all the other facilities are remarkable. I hope everyone’s eye is fixed on the pool, though! Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will be battling it out this year and I’m convinced Lochte will give Phelps a run for his money. Lochte (pictured right with some of my teammates and I) is the most laidback person I have ever met. He came to SHU for a photo-shoot last fall and I was given an opportunity to talk with him and a few teammates. He really is the nice person that everyone makes him out to be. He works out as if he was entered in a strongest man competition and has dedication that no other swimmer can match. I will be pulling for him next week at Olympic Trials and at the Olympics in August, as well as others such as Brendan Hansen (breaststroke events), Eric Shanteau (IM/Breaststroke, missed 2008 Olympics due to cancer), and my favorite Nathan Adrian (Sprint Freestyle). Phelps will win some gold, who knows, he could pull off another Beijing. Last I heard, Phelps is going strong both in dryland workouts and pool workouts. He has been up in high atltitude trianing, Colorado Springs, for the last three weeks with our former SHU teammate, Kevin Webster. Lochte took Phelps down at Worlds last year but Phelps isn’t going down without a fight! Regardless of what happens, I wish all of the US Olympic Swim Team the best in London! It’s going to be an amazing three weeks! They’re representing the greatest country in the world, the best swim programs in the world, and are some of the nicest people most will ever get the chance to meet. Support USA Swimming! Finals for Olympic Trials will be televised live every night on NBC starting next week (June 25-July 2)! As the Olympics wind down, we will be returning to school and turning our attention to our own season. We have a really nice freshman class coming in, about nine guys last time I heard, all of them with talent. They all should be able to fill in and help the team out immensely come our first meet. I’m looking forward to meeting them, instilling the SHU Swim & Dive DNA, which includes our enthusiasm at our sporting events (especially at men’s basketball games...don’t worry we will be back!). Big classes always mean more close friends, as if the team wasn’t close already, we certainly will be even more. This is one of the reasons I chose Seton Hall, how much of a family we are. It’s nice to have time off but I do really miss The Hall, my teammates, and my close friends. Until then I’m soaking in my home-time, especially seeing my family and getting some great home cooking. GDS serves us well throughout the year, but my grandmother makes a mean Vodka and Bolognese sauce so I’ve been filling up when I can! Other than that, I’d just like to wish everyone a fantastic summer! I can’t wait to see what the 2012-13 seasons have in store for Seton Hall Athletics!! GO PIRATES!!!! Sincerely, Joey Lacus

HELP SETON HALL SWIMMING & DIVING “make a splash”

AN EFFORT SPEARHEADED BY ASSISTANT COACH KARA LENNON, SETON HALL SWIMMING & DIVING HAS TEAMED WITH THE MAKE A SPLASH FOUNDATION FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR Below is a recap of Lennon’s visit to a Make A Splash Foundation event this summer. The Seton Hall University Department of Athletics and swimming & diving program showed their support for local Olympian Cullen Jones at a pep rally held Sunday, July 29, at the Cullen Jones Aquatic Center in Irvington, N.J. Jones, who grew up in Irvington before attending North Carolina State University, won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and has already added a silver medal in the same event at the 2012 London games. The Irvington Municipal Pool was renamed in his honor in 2008. Seton Hall University Professor of Organic Chemistry John Sowa, Ph.D., became involved with the Cullen Jones Aquatic Center several months ago by volunteering through the Make a Splash Foundation, a swimming lesson and safety program sponsored by the USA Swimming Foundation. As it turns, Jones is program’s chief athletic representative and also happens to be from Irvington. Sowa worked with a number of officials from the Township of Irvington, including Mayor Wayne Smith, to coordinate a pep rally supporting Jones as he goes for gold at the London Olympics. Sowa also met with Seton Hall assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach Kara Lennon, about representing the Pirates at the event, which she attended along with Seton Hall Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development and Special Projects, Melanie Calderwood. “I have to thank Kara and Melanie for all of the help that they gave and all of their enthusiasm,” Sowa said. “It was great to have some friends from Seton Hall there. The pep rally did a great job of cheering on Cullen Jones and also bringing attention to the Irvington Aquatic swimming program, encouraging more kids to take swim lessons.” The pep rally got underway around 1 p.m., coinciding with Jones’ silver-medal swim in the 4x100meter freestyle relay. After games and giveaways, which included Seton Hall gear highlighting the Pirates’ swim program, there was a series of swim races branded, “Who is going to be the next Cullen Jones?” Kids swam distances ranging from 12.5 yards to 50 yards, and there was also a celebrity race and relay. In the celebrity race, former 200-meter butterfly world-record holder Craig Beardsley, a resident of Chatham, N.J., competed against Lennon in a 50-yard freestyle race, with the Seton Hall coach coming away with the win. After all of the festivities the group recorded a cheer for Jones and everyone signed a banner to ship to him in London, as he competes later this week in the 100-meter freestyle. “I think the kids really enjoyed it, we did some nice giveaways with Seton Hall t-shirts and bags and the kids like having something close to home to cheer for,” Lennon said. “This is one of the most important things that we can do as adults and parents and that is help Cullen Jones keep this momentum going to make it a part of our lives and encourage the safety behind it,” Lennon added. “That is really what it is about, not training superstars but teaching lifesaving skills. I think this drive he is making is incredible and it is making a difference.”

Our focus is ethical leadership. Increasingly, using a strong moral compass to direct your lifestyle and work ethic is an important component in forging a successful career. This is why we offer classes in ethics and, beyond that, education guided by Catholic ideals and universal values.

FOR THE MIND We offer more than 60 majors and concentrations taught by 860 full-time faculty, in five undergraduate schools - with practical, realworld emphasis.

FOR THE HEART We offer a compassionate, divers and collaborative environment that focuses on academic and ethical development.

FOR THE SPIRIT Our faith and spiritual commitments inspire faculty to educate students to become servant leaders in their personal and professional lives, in their community and in their global society. In our valued-centered curricula, programs and extracurricular activities, we focus on academics and devleopment of the individual. Our graduates continue to prove themselves as leaders in their professions and communities. Seton Hall gives you all the resources you would find in a large university. But, with only 5,200 undergraduates and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio, you get the personal attention of a small liberal arts college.

We encourage ongoing, across-the-curriculum discussions on the ethics of business, medicine, teaching and other disciplines and urge you to use your personal morals and values in debating issues and making decisions. Underscoring our national prominence in emphasizing service learning and nurturing the spirit, the John Templeton Foundation has named Seton Hall as one of the country’s leaders in developing the character of its students. And don’t forget about the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.

Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

LYONS PATRICK

Director of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011. Since his arrival, Lyons has been dedicated in his efforts to implement his vision for Seton Hall’s athletics and recreation department by introducing a number of initiatives designed to enhance the college experience for Seton Hall’s 14 NCAA Division I athletics programs and the student body as a whole. In Lyons’ first full year as Director of Athletics, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, Seton Hall’s athletic fundraising vehicle, experienced the most successful year of its history, receiving record contributions to fund critical initiatives to help make the Pirates competitive in the BIG EAST conference and at a national level. When Lyons arrived at Seton Hall, he established improvements and upgrades to the Pirates’ athletic and recreation facilities as a primary goal. Thanks in large part to contributions to Pirate Blue and a commitment from the University to make athletics and recreation a priority for the student-body, Seton Hall has already begun a large number of those enhancements. A new student fitness center is scheduled to be completed by summer 2013 and plans are in place to add a new scoreboard to Owen T. Carroll Field, revamp the student-athlete training room facility and create additional space for Academic Support Services. The men’s basketball locker room and women’s basketball coaching suite were each renovated during the 2011-12 season. The Pirates have also experienced a number of on field successes since Lyons came to Seton Hall. The men’s basketball team finished the 201112 season with a 21-13 overall mark, matching the program’s highest win total since the 2003-04 season and advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The baseball team captured the BIG EAST Championship at the conclusion of the 2011 season, the third in program history and first since 2001. The women’s soccer, volleyball and baseball programs all qualified for BIG EAST Championship competition during the 2011-12 season, with the women’s soccer program posting its most successful campaign since 1999. Lyons has instituted a number of new events to help honor both its current and former student-athletes. In addition to the annual SAAC Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Seton Hall held its first Senior Awards Banquet as a way to recognize its graduating seniors. He also refined the 2012 SHU Athletics Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony by hosting it in conjunction with a golf tournament at the Fairmount Country Club in Chatham, N.J. Seton Hall’s student-athletes have exhibited success in a number of ways off the court as well, through community service initiatives and achievement in the classroom. The Pirates’ community outreach programs demonstrated outstanding involvement from every varsity program during the 2011-12 academic year, as Seton Hall’s student-athletes participated in an array of activities to benefit the community. Seton Hall also hosted

its First Annual Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, providing its studentathletes with a chance to learn from and meet speakers from across the sports landscape. Lyons arrived at Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics, establishing its department as one of the top programs in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He was the chief administrator for the Gaels’ 21 NCAA Division I athletics programs. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and also displayed a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices. Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department saw unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. Lyons also made his mark at Iona in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Before elevating to Director of Athletics at Iona, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons. A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College. Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, who is a member of the faculty at Rutgers University.

BIG EAST CONFERENCE BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 137 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2011-12.

The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league. The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no different. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its first NCAA Championship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut field hockey reached the NCAA semifinals, as did the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA finals. USF softball reached the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the first time in program history. The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the second-straight year. BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her secondstraight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run. Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST basketball squads have captured 11 titles in the last 13 years. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985, the only time this has occurred in NCAA history. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto was the third commissioner of the BIG EAST, serving from 2009-2012, after seven years as the conference’s senior associate commissioner. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past nine years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
