SETON HALL
2012 SEASON PREVIEW team’s top time on all nine occasions. With three full seasons already under his belt, Hanko is the most experienced member of the team and his coach believes he has the potential to produce a special senior season.
2012 SETON HALL CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: “yOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO RUN TO BEAT ME.”
“Jared has already proven he can be a consistent performer for us,” stated Moon, who is entering his 41st season at the helm for the Pirates. “Heading into this year, I believe he has the ability to raise his level to where he is one of the top runners on the east coast.”
Seton Hall head coach John Moon knows quality when he sees it. A legendary figure in the sport, Moon is no stranger to success at the highest levels. With that fact in mind, it warrants notice when he says he believes the cross country program is poised to take a large step forward in 2012. “I enjoy coaching this team,” Moon said. “They are very coachable and they genuinely love to run. I think this year more than others; we have the depth up and down our roster needed to compete at this level.” Leading up to the new season the Pirates have been doing plenty of just that, running. According to Moon, an enhanced preseason training regimen has seen members of the SHU squad run between 70-80 miles per week. In addition to the demanding distances, the Pirates have taken their preparation to a number of different locations, introducing variety to break what had previously been a monotonous routine. “This year we definitely stepped up our training,” continued Moon. “In the past, our kids would simply run in areas around the school. This year we have been utilizing Clinton and Weequahic High Schools as well as Garrett Mountain Park in Paterson as additional training venues. I feel that in doing so, we will be better prepared to compete this season.” At the heart of a program that is primed to establish itself as a competitive force is an experienced core of runners. With a bevy of impact underclassmen and an influx of talented newcomers joining the program for the new season, there is no shortage of reasons for optimism to abound in South Orange.
Senior Cory Hellwig and junior Carl Johnston represent the two other returning upperclassmen for this year’s version of the Pirates. Hellwig began running for the Pirates as a sophomore and has shown the capability to be a factor on a number of occasions throughout his first two seasons. Johnston, who competed in all nine meets for SHU in 2011, will be looking to return to the form he showed during his freshman season when he led the squad in all seven meets in which he ran. “Looking ahead, I expect Cory to be one of our strongest runners this year and consistently be among our top-three finishers on the men’s side,” Moon said. “Carl is a guy who is very important to where we want to get to as a team. He is still running into shape and when he finds his form, I think our team will be that much more dangerous.” Four sophomores will also be included on an underclassmenladen roster for the Seton Hall men. Despite being in only their second year, there is a wealth of experience among the group. Tyler Orner was a presence in the Pirates’ lineup in each meet last season, contributing to the team’s score on six occasions including the last four races of the year. Brothers John Walsh and Kevin Walsh return after each competing in the majority of meets during their first collegiate season. Kevin scored for the team in seven of his eight appearances while John lined up for six out of nine races on the year. “I am excited to see what Tyler can bring to our team this year after competing well as a freshman,” praised Moon. “Unfortunately our twins [John and Kevin Walsh] will miss some time in the beginning of the year due to injuries. They will be missed because they have the potential to be some of our top
Leading the charge on the men’s side will be senior co-captains Tony Cramond and Jared Hanko. Cramond, entering his third season for Seton Hall, has been a steady contributor and has shown tangible improvement over his first two campaigns. Along with Hanko, he will be expected to provide a leadership presence for the Pirates this year. Jared Hanko has been elected a captain after emerging as a force to be reckoned with during his junior season. The Montville native competed in every meet in 2011, finishing with the

2012 SEASON PREVIEW contributors, but some other people now have the opportunity to step up. “ Mark Janucci serves as the only other sophomore on the squad. Janucci will be competing for the first time this fall after being held out due to an injury in 2011. “Mark should come in and be an additional threat for us after being hurt last year,” said Moon. Three newcomers will join the Pirates for 2012 as Jacob Bast, Ryan Flannery, and Joseph Martinelli enter their freshman campaigns. Bast, a native of St.Louis, Mo., comes to South Orange after a four-year varsity career at Oakville High School where he twice earned All-State honors in cross country. Flannery joins the Seton Hall program after serving as team captain at Lacey Township High School in New Jersey and earning Second Team All-County recognition as a senior. Another local product, Martinelli also served as team captain as a senior at Somerville High school, guiding his squad to a top-20 finish at the New Jersey Group 3 State Championships. “We have some really talented young men coming on this season,” Moon stated. “They are all experienced and their times indicate that they can come in and have an immediate impact for us. Jacob, Ryan and Joseph will all help make us a deeper team.” The same sentiment of quality depth can be applied to this year’s 14-member women’s cross country squad. At the forefront of the team’s efforts will be the three tri-captains elected for 2012, senior Hughnique Rolle, junior Nyala Eddings and sophomore Mary Migton. Rolle, much like Jared Hanko on the men’s side, is the most
veteran member of the squad with three years of competition already on her résumé. She enters 2012 on the heels of a junior campaign in which she was limited to six meets. Despite missing time, her results improved in conjunction with her health as Rolle finished as the team’s top performer in the final two meets of the season. Nyala Eddings is one of two juniors on the squad and will look to build upon an impressive 2011 where she asserted herself as one of the Pirates’ most consistent figures. A competitor in all nine meets, Eddings posted a top-three time on the team in each outing. Sophomore Mary Migton burst onto the scene for Seton Hall in her first collegiate go-around, crossing the line first for the Pirates on seven occasions. Migton, who also posted five top10 overall finishes on the year, placed in the top-two on the team in all nine meets. “We selected tri-captains on the women’s side this year for a reason, they are all deserving,” said Moon. “Hughnique holds several national records in the Bahamas and with a complete, healthy season, she can be one of the top competitors on the east coast as well. Nyala continues to improve and grow as a runner and will again play a major role in what our team is able to accomplish. Mary had an excellent first season for us but I don’t think she is content by any means. She will be one of the team leaders again as a sophomore.” The three other upperclassmen on the squad besides Rolle and Eddings are seniors Christina Chafos and Marigot Lustyk who are joined by junior Kristen May. Chafos has competed in all 18 meets for SHU since joining the program as a sophomore in 2010 and has steadily developed into a solid contributor, scoring for the team seven times last year. 2011 was the first year in the program for Lustyk who was thrust into competition, running in all nine meets during her initial campaign. Kristen May is also coming off her first year running competitively for the Pirates after lettering in cross country at Shrewsbury High School in Shrewsbury, Mass., for three seasons. In 2011, May ran during seven meets, gaining valuable experience that has her in a position to become a major factor this year. “Christina has worked hard and continued to improve throughout her time with us,” Moon proclaimed. “That type of effort will allow her to play a large role for the team as a senior. Along with Marigot, I expect them to be there to push to be near the top of our performance list. Kristen May completed her first season last year and based on what I have seen, I think there’s a chance her performance this year will surprise some people in a positive way.” In addition to Migton, Louisa Ozimek and newcomers Allyson Guieb and Felicia Mingrone round out the sophomore class

2012 SEASON PREVIEW season. “We will start out at Monmouth as it is a shorter race that will help us get ready the rest of the season,” explained Moon. “From there we will be a part of a number of challenging fields that will lead into our trip to Florida for the Asics-Embry Riddle Classic. My hope is by that point in the year; we will be gearing up to win that meet. It will serve as somewhat of a barometer of where we are at heading into the championship season.” The Pirates will be appearing in the Asics-Embry Riddle Classic for the second time in three years. In 2010, both the men and women recorded a third place team finish. Hughnique Rolle placed seventh overall to lead the women while Jared Hanko came across in 14th position to pace the men.
for the women’s contingent. Ozimek appeared for the Pirates on six occasions last year, producing her best performance of the season during the ECAC Championships, the last meet of the season. Mingrone enters the squad just one year removed from a standout track career in Shelton, Conn. where she earned All-Division honors and set several records at Shelton High School. “Louisa kind of embodies the progress we are making as a program as she continues to come along,” Moon said. “Felicia is someone who is new to the mix and has a primarily trackbased background but I have been extremely pleased to see that she is hanging tough during training.” The women’s program will also welcome a large five-member freshmen class aboard for the 2012 season. Amanda Catherall, Maggie Jodon, Amanda Quaglia, Alex Ryan and Samantha Young will all put on the blue and white for the first time this year following their respective high school careers. “We have a deep freshmen class this year on the women’s team and each girl has the ability to develop into a quality runner for our program,” Moon stated. “From preseason training, it is apparent that Alex [Ryan] and Amanda [Quaglia] can be top-five level contributors right away. The group as a whole though is extremely talented and provides us with the competition we need to continue to improve as a program.” The Pirates newfound depth will be put to the test from the outset of a demanding schedule that once again features nine meets. Seton Hall will start the season at the Monmouth XC Kick-Off before traveling to the Hofstra Brick Stone Run, the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational in Maryland and the AsicsEmbry Riddle Classic in Florida prior to the championship

Following their return from the Sunshine State, the Pirates will compete at the Metropolitan Championships. “The Mets” are held at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, the same site as the 2012 BIG EAST Championships. “Our athletes know the course at Van Cortland very well and we were even able to practice there recently,” said Moon. “Racing at the Mets won’t necessarily provide a decided advantage for us during the BIG EAST Championships but it is an important landmark in our season. This will most likely be our first look at other BIG EAST schools and of course, you always want to perform well against other schools from the area.” A date at the Leopard Invitational hosted by Lafayette in Easton, Pa., is sandwiched on the Pirates’ slate between the Mets and three championship races to close the year. The first of the trio will be the conference championships scheduled for Friday, October 26. After a BIG EAST champion is crowned, SHU will compete at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals followed by an entry in the ECAC Championships to end the year. “When it comes to the conference championships, our main focus is continuing to improve our results and the team we have this year is very capable of doing so.” Moon stated. In addition to increased depth, there is a sense of team unity among this year’s squad that has their veteran head coach especially excited about the new season. “This year’s team has a sense of camaraderie that is a joy to be around,” lauded Moon. “They come to work every day with a sense of enthusiasm and they are ready to run. We have been as a unit much better than we have in the past which is extremely important if you want to successful as a cross country team and not just individuals. They are not intimidated by any of the schools we will go up against and they have a fight in them that says you’re going to have to run to beat me.”

JOHN MOON HEAD COACH • 41ST SEASON • EAST TENNESSEE STATE ‘61
John Moon, one of the most respected and successful track coaches in the nation, orchestrated the rise of Seton Hall track from a perennial Eastern power to a nationally prominent program. The 2012-13 season marks his 41st at the University and his third serving exclusively as cross country head coach. On April 2, 2006, Moon was inducted to the Hall of Fame of the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association. Every year the NJSCA bestows the distinguished award on an outstanding New Jerseyan in the world of athletics. On December 3, 2002, Moon received the “Legendary Coaches Award” from the Newark YMWCA at the organization’s Sports Legends IX Gala. Also in 2002, Moon was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track Coaches Association after the Seton Hall women’s team captured both the ECAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. In addition to all of the success with the Pirates, Moon reached perhaps the ultimate highlight of his career during the 2000 Summer Olympics where he served as the first assistant coach for the United States Men’s Track Team in Sydney, Australia. Moon was appointed to the position on December 3, 1997, a sign of the respect he has earned throughout the nation. The appointment was Moon’s fifth international coaching assignment. In 1995 he served as the head coach for the United States team at the Pan American games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Moon’s squad brought home 36 medals, including a bronze by former Pirate star Flirtisha Harris. The strong tradition of Seton Hall track excellence that Moon has developed is accented by the individual achievements of both current and former Pirate athletes. His slate includes 71 All-Americans and seven NCAA Champions. Moon has tutored 19 Olympic athletes during his career, including four runners that competed in the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, one in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and one in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The 1993-94 season was a historic one for Coach Moon and the Seton Hall women’s team as it reached new heights of national recognition. The Pirates finished third at the 1994 NCAA Indoor Track Championships, the highest in school history, while four athletes were crowned NCAA champions for the first time. Flirtisha Harris became the first NCAA Champion for the Seton Hall women’s athletics program when she won the 400 meter title, and then was a member of the NCAA Champion 1600 meter relay team along with Shermaine Ross, Keisha Caine and Julia Sandiford. The women’s team duplicated those national championship feats later on in the year when Harris and the 1600 team again won the NCAA titles at the INTRO

Outdoor Championships That performance, along with team titles at the BIG EAST and ECAC Indoor Championship, earned Moon the honor of NCAA Women’s Track Coach of the Year for the Indoor Season as selected by the United States Track Coaches Association of America. It marked the first time in his stellar career that he earned national Coach of the Year honors, but Moon’s accomplishments have been recognized regionally quite often. He was named the 1994 District 2 Men’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year, marking the seventh time he earned district honors. He has also been named the Coach of the Year in the BIG EAST seven times, the Metropolitan Coach of the Year 11 times, and the Collegiate Track Conference Coach of the Year six times. The 1992-93 campaign was one of Moon’s most prosperous as he was named the District 2 Coach of the Year after leading the men to the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and the women to their first-ever BIG EAST Outdoor Championship. Moon and his assistants were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year for the men at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships as well as for the women at the BIG EAST Outdoor meet. That year, Moon produced nine All-Americans and led the women to a then best-ever sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Moon became Seton Hall’s head coach in 1972 and was an instant success, garnering newspaper headlines such as “Moon Gleams” (Elizabeth Daily Journal) and “Moon Shooting High” (New York Times). Replacing the legend-
ary Johnny Gibson as the Pirates’ mentor was no easy task, but Moon made the transition prosperous for Seton Hall. In his first season, Moon coached the mile relay team to first place at the NCAA Indoor Championships and has not looked back since. His contributions to Seton Hall have been recognized with two of the University’s highest honors. On September 18, 1997, Moon was inducted in the Seton Hall Athletic Hall of Fame along with Andrew Valmon, one of his top athletes. On March 28, 1996, Moon was awarded the McQuaid Medal for Distinguished Service at Charter Day ceremonies. The medal is given annually to members of the University community who have served beyond measure with selfless dedication and high distinction. Moon was a standout in both track and football at Linden High School. He was an All-State and All-American performer in high school, running the 100 in 9.7 and the 220 in 21.0. After excelling on the prep level, Moon moved on to Tennessee State where he earned All-American honors. Before graduating in 1961, he was one of the top sprinters in the school’s history. His time of 9.3 in the 100 yard dash in 1960 tied the world record. While at Tennessee State, the lightning-quick Moon won the NAIA and placed third in the NCAA Championships. In fact, he is the last man to beat Olympic legend Bob Hayes in a race, accomplishing the feat in 1964. At the National AAU Championships at Rutgers Stadium in 1963, Moon finished second. He also ran a time of 20.3 in the 220 and 46.2 in the quarter mile. He was elected to Tennessee State’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. Moon’s coaching career began at Kilmer Job Center in Piscataway, NJ. He then moved on to Rahway High School, a school with a dormant track program. At the Union County school, he compiled a dual meet mark of 99-11 over a six year period, claiming 33 championships in the process. More importantly, every senior that Moon coached at Rahway went on to college. Moon’s involvement with the sport is extensive as he is a former President of the IC4A. He is also the past president of both the BIG EAST Track Coaches and the Metropolitan Track Conference, while he has served as the New Jersey delegate to USA Track 15 times. Moon, who resides in Somerset, N.J., with his wife, Thelma, holds a master’s degree from Seton Hall in administrative supervision. He is also a commander in the United States Naval Reserve.

Seton Hall is about caring and sharing - to pass a torch to students that is burning brighter than the one passed to us. Tony Lovisick, PH.D. Chair, Finance and Legal Studies Stillman School of Business

Our faculty comprised of a distinguished group of scholars that have earned advanced degrees both in the U.S. and abroad. You will study alongside these learned men and women collaborating with them in developing new concepts and researching meaningful topics. And don’t think they won’t be involved in your academic careers - personal attention is at the heart of academic excellence.

I give the highest importance to my contact with students ... they are the school’s most important asset. Ambassador s. azmat hassan Senior Faculty Associate Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations
The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Millburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and your are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. And don’t forget about the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.
Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

LYONS PATRICK
Director of Athletics and Recreational Services
Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011. Since his arrival, Lyons has been dedicated in his efforts to implement his vision for Seton Hall’s athletics and recreation department by introducing a number of initiatives designed to enhance the college experience for Seton Hall’s 14 NCAA Division I athletics programs and the student body as a whole. In Lyons’ first full year as Director of Athletics, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, Seton Hall’s athletic fundraising vehicle, experienced the most successful year of its history, receiving record contributions to fund critical initiatives to help make the Pirates competitive in the BIG EAST conference and at a national level. When Lyons arrived at Seton Hall, he established improvements and upgrades to the Pirates’ athletic and recreation facilities as a primary goal. Thanks in large part to contributions to Pirate Blue and a commitment from the University to make athletics and recreation a priority for the student-body, Seton Hall has already begun a large number of those enhancements. A new student fitness center is scheduled to be completed by summer 2013 and plans are in place to add a new scoreboard to Owen T. Carroll Field, revamp the student-athlete training room facility and create additional space for Academic Support Services. The men’s basketball locker room and women’s basketball coaching suite were each renovated during the 2011-12 season. The Pirates have also experienced a number of on field successes since Lyons came to Seton Hall. The men’s basketball team finished the 201112 season with a 21-13 overall mark, matching the program’s highest win total since the 2003-04 season and advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The baseball team captured the BIG EAST Championship at the conclusion of the 2011 season, the third in program history and first since 2001. The women’s soccer, volleyball and baseball programs all qualified for BIG EAST Championship competition during the 2011-12 season, with the women’s soccer program posting its most successful campaign since 1999. Lyons has instituted a number of new events to help honor both its current and former student-athletes. In addition to the annual SAAC Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Seton Hall held its first Senior Awards Banquet as a way to recognize its graduating seniors. He also refined the 2012 SHU Athletics Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony by hosting it in conjunction with a golf tournament at the Fairmount Country Club in Chatham, N.J. Seton Hall’s student-athletes have exhibited success in a number of ways off the court as well, through community service initiatives and achievement in the classroom. The Pirates’ community outreach programs demonstrated outstanding involvement from every varsity program during the 2011-12 academic year, as Seton Hall’s student-athletes participated in an array of activities to benefit the community. Seton Hall also hosted

its First Annual Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, providing its studentathletes with a chance to learn from and meet speakers from across the sports landscape. Lyons arrived at Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics, establishing its department as one of the top programs in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He was the chief administrator for the Gaels’ 21 NCAA Division I athletics programs. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and also displayed a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices. Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department saw unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. Lyons also made his mark at Iona in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Before elevating to Director of Athletics at Iona, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons. A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College. Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, who is a member of the faculty at Rutgers University.

BIG EAST CONFERENCE BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 137 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2011-12.
The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league. The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no different. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its first NCAA Championship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut field hockey reached the NCAA semifinals, as did the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA finals. USF softball reached the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the first time in program history. The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the second-straight year. BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her secondstraight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run. Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST basketball squads have captured 11 titles in the last 13 years. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985, the only time this has occurred in NCAA history. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto was the third commissioner of the BIG EAST, serving from 2009-2012, after seven years as the conference’s senior associate commissioner. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past nine years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
