Dear Friends of Seton Hall Athletics, I have been the Athletics Director at Seton Hall University for just a short time, but I have already been so impressed with the love and passion that our alumni and fans feel for Seton Hall and the Pirates. On behalf of the Seton Hall University Department of Athletics, it is my privilege to say “Thank You” for all of your dedication and support of our program. The following Annual Report reviews some of our highlights during the 2010-11 athletics seasons. Of particular note is the success of our baseball team who won the BIG EAST Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Regionals in College Station, Texas. Other notables include the performance of senior men’s swimmer, Kevin Webster, who was named the Most Outstanding Male Swimmer of the 2011 BIG EAST Championships. At the event, he won both the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke to give him three BIG EAST titles in his impressive collegiate career. Kevin also qualified for the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. In addition to these achievements and several others, I am also proud to report that our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. More than half of our student-athletes were recognized as BIG EAST Academic All-Stars, while over a third earned Dean’s List recognition in the 2010-11 academic year. My goal as athletics director, and our goal as a department, is to build a culture of excellence. We seek to win championships, and in doing so, will compete in an ethical way with great integrity. It is essential that we create an environment where our student-athletes work as hard as they can to win games while achieving greatness in the classroom. Along the way our student-athletes will learn valuable life lessons in preparation, teamwork, and dedication, assuring that they discover the complete student-athlete experience at Seton Hall. In order to give our student-athletes the best possible experience it is more important now than ever, that we ask our alums and friends of Pirate Athletics for their support. We have set very ambitious goals for our department and only through your support will we be able to achieve those goals. If you are already a member of Pirate Blue, I thank you and ask for your continued support and help. If you are not a Pirate Blue member, we need you to get involved. BASEBALL

(34-25, 14-13 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) The words “storybook” and “fairy tale” are often over-used in the sports vernacular when describing unlikely or seemingly miraculous feats. But every great once in a while a special team emerges and captures the imagination of its fan base. It takes them on a magical ride that blends the line between fantasy and reality. Such was the case of the 2011 BIG EAST Champion Seton Hall baseball team, a team that had very few expectations coming into its season. In fact, it was predicted to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches’ Poll. The Pirates saw their share of highs and lows throughout the regular season, but found a way to tap into their inner greatness down the stretch. They were a scrappy group built on pitching

and defense, who relied on “small ball” to plate just enough runs needed to inch them closer to an elusive post-season appearance. Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Seton Hall occupied ninth place in the 12-team league, knowing that only the top-8 teams would earn a trip to the BIG EAST Championship tournament. They needed to perform well in their final weekend series against Georgetown and hoped that opponents above them in the standings faltered. Not only did they perform well, but they swept all three games against the Hoyas, and thanks to timely losses by other competition, the Pirates earned a berth in the conference tournament, not as the #7 or #8 seed, but as the fifth-best team in the field. In the opening round, Seton Hall upset fourth-seeded West Virginia, 10-4, behind the performance of its seniors. Ace pitcher Joe DiRocco gave up just three earned runs in seven innings to get the win, while Sean Gusrang, A.J. Rusbarsky and Frank Esposito each had two RBI’s. With the win, the Pirates would face top-seeded Connecticut. The Huskies took home the conference’s regular season title by winning 22 of its 27 conference games. They featured eight players drafted by Major League Baseball and 11 players on allconference teams including the conference Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, this talented group of “Ruthian” performers was guided by the conference’s Coach of the Year. Seton Hall, by contrast, had just one all-conference performer, DiRocco, among the 40 all-conference selections. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pirates scratched across two runs to tie the game and eventually force extra innings. In the top of the 12th inning, UConn seemingly took control with an RBI single to make the score 3-2. But the game was not over. And in displaying the same resolve and determination that had become Seton Hall’s reputation in 2011, the Pirates fought back in the bottom of the 12th, scored two runs and defeated Connecticut, the nation’s 15th-ranked team, 4-3, just as the clock passed midnight. In this fairy tale run however, Cinderella would not be distracted by the time of day or night. After a day’s rest, thanks to the tournament’s double-elimination format, the Pirates had to again face UConn. This time however, although the outcome was the same, the Pirates’ performance was dramatically different. Seton Hall jumped on the champs from the start and used a 6-run seventh inning to fuel a 12-2 victory. Freshman Brian Gilbert limited UConn to just one earned run over 5.1 innings for the victory. Zack Granite and Mike Genovese had three hits apiece for the Pirates.

For the second straight day, David defeated Goliath, and this time, eliminated him from the tournament. The odds remained long in the tournament’s championship game. Having eliminated the conference’s best team, the Pirates now faced second-seeded St. John’s in a one-game, winnertakes-all showdown. Working on just three days rest, Joe DiRocco gave up just one run in six innings and the Pirates won their third BIG EAST Conference tournament championship with a 4-2 victory. DiRocco was named most outstanding player.

Their memorable season came to an end however, with consecutive losses to the Regional host, Texas A&M and Arizona, both nationally-ranked opponents. Seton Hall traveled back home, their season completed with a final record of 34-25, and senior leaders DiRocco, Esposito, Gusrang and Rusbarsky closed the books of their respective collegiate careers. Their tenures however, were finished with the perfect final punctuation… a fairy tale ending for an unlikely champion. It’s a story that would be nearly unbelievable, if it wasn’t true.

The fifth-seeded underdogs, who needed to sweep their last three games of the regular season simply to qualify for the tournament, finished as the only unbeaten team in the eightteam field, knocking off the tournament’s top two seeds to become the lowest seed ever to win the conference tournament. This was the same team predicted to finish 11th out of 12 teams. In a season laden with success, the Pirates’ final highlight came in the opening game of the College Station Regional of the NCAA Championship. Seton Hall ran its season-long win streak to nine games with a 4-0 victory over Arizona. Sophomore Jon Prosinski fired a six-hit, complete game shutout, while striking out three and walking only one.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(13-18, 7-11 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) The 2010-11 Seton Hall men’s basketball season had its share of team and individual highlights while ushering in a new era with head coach Kevin Willard on the bench. The Pirates played one of the most difficult schedules in the nation, which included 10 games against ranked teams and 18 games against teams that made it to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Seton Hall also faced the NIT runner-up, Alabama, whom they defeated in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam in November. Despite the daunting gauntlet, the Pirates played well in registering victories over NCAA Tournament teams, Saint Peter’s, Marquette, #15 St. John’s and #9 Syracuse. It marked the first time since the 2005-06 campaign that Seton Hall had registered two wins over teams ranked in the nation’s top 15.

The season’s brightest moment was a shocking 22-point upset at Syracuse. Led by senior Jeremy Hazell, Seton Hall dominated the Orange from the start and pounded the nation’s ninthranked team, 90-68, winning for just the fifth time in 27 games at the Carrier Dome. Hazell had 28 points and nine rebounds in the upset. That strong performance was just one of several last season from the long-distance sharpshooter who finished his spectacular four-year career with 2,146 career points, third-most in Seton Hall history. As a result, Hazell earned All-BIG EAST honors for a fourth straight season and First Team All-Met recognition for a third consecutive campaign while becoming the 30th player in BIG EAST history to record more than 2,000 career points. In addition to these impressive feats, Hazell ranks among Seton Hall’s top 10 in career points, points per game, games played, minutes played, field goals made and attempted, as well as steals and steals per game. He holds top-10 single-season marks in seven categories as well. All of this was achieved despite the fact that Hazell missed 13 games due to injury during the 2010-11 season. Through the season’s first three games, he was averaging 24.0 points per game and was 11-for-17 from three point range. But in the closing moments of an 83-78 victory over Alabama in the first round of the 2011 Paradise Jam, Hazell’s and Seton Hall’s campaign was dramatically interrupted. The shooting guard scored a game-high 27 points, but as Alabama’s spirits broke, so did Hazell’s wrist. The little known, and hard to break, scaphoid bone in his left (non-shooting) wrist was severed, resulting in a nearly twomonth absence. But upon his return, Hazell immediately showed the same scoring prowess he displayed routinely prior to the injury. In his

first game back, Hazell scored a game-high 23 points on 10-for17 shooting from the floor in a 78-67 victory at DePaul on Jan. 12. The Pirates’ captain was back and there were milestones to achieve. At Rutgers on Feb. 12, Hazell scored 19 points in a 69-64 victory in Piscataway. In doing so, the sharpshooter became only the third player in Seton Hall history and the 30th player in BIG EAST Conference history to record 2,000 career points. Two games later, at Marquette, Hazell connected on four threepointers to become the BIG EAST’s all-time leader in threepointers made in conference play. He would finish his career with 201 made three’s in conference games. His total of 328 overall made three-pointers is Seton Hall’s career mark. Hazell also holds Seton Hall’s career record for three-pointers attempted and single-season marks for three’s attempted and made. The 6-foot-5 shooter apparently had no limit on his range often connecting from seemingly just beyond mid-court. He would finish his senior season averaging 19.8 points per game, fourthbest in the BIG EAST, his third straight year of averaging more than 19.0 points per game.

With Hazell back in the lineup, Seton Hall proved to be a tough opponent in conference play. Even the games that the Pirates lost, they displayed the hard work and determination that has become a routine effort for Kevin Willard’s teams. In Seton Hall’s five home BIG EAST losses, the Pirates fell by an average of just 4.2 points, including a two-point loss to Connecticut, the eventual 2011 national champion. Personal achievements were also accomplished in 2010-11 by Herb Pope, Jeff Robinson and Jordan Theodore, all of which passed 500 total points for their careers at Seton Hall. Pope became just the 34th player in Pirates’ history to record both 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. Seton Hall welcomed freshmen Patrik Auda, Fuquan Edwin and Aaron Geramipoor to the team. Edwin averaged 7.9 points per game and made 26 starts, the most by a Pirates freshman since Eugene Harvey started 29 games in 2006-07. In one final moment of high drama, Hazell scored a game-high 27 points vs. Rutgers in the first round of the 2011 BIG EAST Championship. With just two seconds remaining in regulation, he buried a deep three-pointer to tie the game. Although the Pirates ultimately fell in overtime, the excitement of the moment was a fitting final act for Hazell in a career laden with remarkable feats.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (8-22, 1-15 BIG EAST CONFERENCE)

Last year was a season of great change for Seton Hall’s women’s basketball program. An infusion of new energy and promise was brought by Naismith Hall of Famer Anne Donovan, who came to South Orange after leading the WNBA’s New York Liberty to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2010. Long before she became a successful head coach, Donovan had a legendary collegiate playing career compiling 2,719 points and 1,976 rebounds for Old Dominion. She brought this invaluable experience to Seton Hall and immediately laid the groundwork for future success in South Orange. The Pirates gave Donovan her initial victory back on the collegiate sidelines with a 72-59 drubbing of eventual NCAA Tournament participant Temple in early November at Walsh Gymnasium. Later, Seton Hall defeated Cincinnati on the road for the first BIG EAST win of the Donovan era. Not only did the coaching staff change, but a slew of new student-athletes also joined the Pirates. Last season only two of Seton Hall’s top seven scorers from 2009-10 returned, providing fresh faces and new opportunities for many of the younger Pirates and new additions.

One of the Pirate newcomers last year was a transfer from Northeastern. Junior guard Jasmine Crew made an immediate impact leading the team with 11.6 points per game. Her 77.3% from the free-throw line was the ninth-best percentage in the BIG EAST Conference. In a season of many standout performances, she tallied her career-high of 20 points twice, against Rhode Island and Marquette. A key returning veteran in 2010-11 was junior Kandice Green, who averaged 11.5 points to go along with a team-high 8.1 rebounds. The 6-foot-1 forward notched six double-doubles and exploded for career-highs of 31 points and 23 rebounds at William & Mary. Her 23 rebounds represent the second highest single-game total in Pirates’ history. Green has also risen to 16th place all-time at Seton Hall with 636 career rebounds. Another newcomer was freshman guard Ka-Deidre Simmons, who averaged 7.2 points and 2.6 rebounds, while starting 27 of 30 games for the Pirates. Her efforts earned her a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. It marked the third time in the last four years that Seton Hall has had representation on the AllFreshman Team.

SWIM & DIVE

(WOMEN’S S&D: 8-3, MEN’S S&D: 9-2) Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams enjoyed one of the finest seasons in each of the program’s histories in 2010-11. The men captured a sixth place finish at the BIG EAST Championships, which was the highest in school history, while the women took ninth place and went 8-3 in dual meets to post the highest winning percentage (.727) under the direction of head coach Ron Farina. Senior Kevin Webster was a huge reason for the Pirates’ success in the pool. Named Seton Hall’s Overall Male Athlete of the Year for an unprecedented third straight year, Webster was named Most Outstanding Male Swimmer at the BIG EAST Championships and became the first swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The native of Leawood, Kan. won the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke, and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle. With his backstroke victory, Webster became the first SHU swimmer to repeat as a conference champion in the same event. Webster finishes his career holding five individual (200 and 50yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, and 200 and 400-yard individual medley) and three relay (200 and 800-yard freestyle, and 200-yard medley) records.

Freshman Matt Benson and sophomore Ryan O’Shaughnessy were also big contributors to the men’s team. Benson was the runner-up in 11 events over the course of the season, with the majority of those second place finishes coming in events that included Webster. O’Shaughnessy was a three-time BIG EAST Championship finalist in individual medley and breaststroke sprint races, and captured eight first-place finishes throughout the year. Junior Brittney Hervey excelled in diving events to play a key role in the women’s success. She qualified for the finals of the threemeter event and took 14th place at the BIG EAST Championship. Hervey’s performance during the season earned her a spot at the NCAA Zonals. In addition, she holds the school record in both the one and three-meter board. Also posting strong seasons for the women were sophomore Andrea Shuba and freshman Jane Ehret. Shuba broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke at the BIG EAST Championships and was victorious on seven occasions. Ehret reached the finals of the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly, and was a USA Short Course National qualifier.

SOFTBALL

(16-35, 3-19 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) A pair of in-season tournament victories highlighted the 2011 softball season for Seton Hall. In North Carolina, the Blue and White posted a 3-1 record to claim the Elon Invitational championship before going 4-1 at the inaugural Seton Hall Pirate classic. Senior Michelle Reed broke the school’s career stolen-base record and posted 67 swipes in her illustrious career. Sophomore Hannah Hill and freshman Jen Metzger were solid in the pitching circle for the Hall. Hill led the team with eight wins while Metzger posted a 3.94 ERA and five victories in her rookie campaign. Offensively, senior Nalin Bennett and junior Kristen Kaelin each reached the 100-hit plateau for their careers. Senior Brittany Schillizzi paced the team in both home runs and RBI. The Pirates showed an uncanny ability to turn double plays, averaging 0.49 per game to rank sixth in the nation and first among BIG EAST clubs.

MEN’S SOCCER

(3-13-1, 1-8 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) The men’s soccer team took on one of the toughest schedules in the nation, facing four opponents ranked in the top-five during the 2010 season. The Hall nearly came away with a major upset in the season-opener at #3 Wake Forest, but ultimately settled for a 2-2 draw. Senior Brayan Martinez led the team with six goals and 14 points en route to being named Second Team All-BIG EAST and being selected in the first round of the MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas. Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Bonder made 10 starts and posted a pair of shutouts while routinely showing off the ability to make acrobatic saves.

VOLLEYBALL

(13-18, 7-7 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) Head coach Kris Zeiter led the volleyball program to its second straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championship in 2010. The Pirates’ signature win came in a five-set victory at Louisville, marking the first time in program history that SHU defeated the Cardinals. In the monumental win, senior Sarah Osmun broke the school record for kills. She finished her career with 1,572 kills and 1,197 digs, the third most in program history. Winning five of their last seven matches helped the Pirates secure the seventh seed in the conference tournament, setting up a rematch with Louisville. SHU dropped the first set, but rallied back to win the second to even the match. The third and fourth sets were both hotly contested, but the Hall came up just short against the eventual BIG EAST champion. Junior Meghan Matusiak reached 1,000 kills for her career, while freshman Alyssa Warren set a freshman record with 520 digs. Matusiak and Osmun were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, marking the first time that two Pirates earned conference honors in the same season since 1994.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

(7-10-1, 3-7-1 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) Led by a pair of elite youngsters, the women’s soccer program won its most games since 2008. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team thanks to a 1.28 goals against average and a .786 save percentage, eighth best in the conference. The Kearny, N.J. native was also named Seton Hall’s Sophomore Female Athlete of the Year. Freshman Katie Ritter earned All-Rookie Team honors after leading the Pirates with seven goals, 15 points and three game-winning goals, including the lone tally in a 1-0 victory over #24 Rutgers on Sept. 17. As a team, the Pirates went 7-10-1. Their victory over Rutgers was the second over a nationally-ranked opponent since 1999.

WOMEN’S GOLF Head coach Sara Doell guided the Seton Hall women’s golf program through its inaugural campaign that included nine tournaments over the fall and spring seasons. Freshman Hannah Basalone grabbed a ninth place finish in the Hall’s first competition, the Bucknell Invitational, while the team placed 10th overall. Freshman Samantha Massei carded the program’s first hole-in-one on the opening weekend, using a six-iron on the 140-yard 16th hole. Basalone later closed out the fall season by placing fifth at the University of Richmond’s Spider Invitational with rounds of 79-75-74. Basalone claimed an 11th place finish at Georgetown’s Hoya Invitational, the Hall’s final competition before the BIG EAST Championship at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. Once again, Basalone led the way, posting a 75 in the second round for the Pirates’ lowest score of the conference tournament. A strong foundation for the future was built as Doell often sent out five freshmen to represent the Hall on the course. The Pirates bid farewell to only one member of the team, as senior and teamleader Erica Fitzpatrick graduated in the spring.

CROSS COUNTRY Legendary head coach John Moon guided a young squad through the 2010 season, developing a strong group of runners on both the men’s and women’s sides. A pair of underclassmen proved to be the top performers throughout the season. Freshman Carl Johnston ran in seven races last fall and paced the Hall each time, including an 81st place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. For the women, sophomore Hughnique Rolle led the Pirates in all nine meets and saved her strongest performance for the ECAC Championship, where she ran the 5K in a season-best time of 19:32.

ATHLETICS ACHIEVEMENTS MEN’S GOLF For a second straight year sophomore Brandon Park was named to the All-BIG EAST Team and averaged a 73.88 stroke average, currently the lowest career stroke average for any golfer in Seton Hall history. Park, and junior Troy Spencer, combined to lead the Pirates in nine of 12 tournaments this year. Both were also named to the PING All-Northeast Region Team. Junior College transfer John Dawson Neufeld led Seton Hall in the other three events including the Rutgers Invitational where he became the first Pirate to win a tournament’s individual crown since Kyle Morris was victorious at the George Washington Invitational in 2006. Collectively, the team earned seven top-10 and four top-5 finishes in 12 tournaments during the 2010-11 academic year including a second place team finish at the Rutgers Invitational. The Pirates placed ninth at the 2011 BIG EAST Championship. Park again led the team with a top-10 finish for the second straight year at the conference’s marquee event.

TENNIS

(6-14, 3-7 BIG EAST CONFERENCE) Steady improvement was the theme of the women’s tennis program in 2010-11. The spring season saw the Pirates pick up their play on the courts before falling just shy of a BIG EAST Championship berth. Freshman Pui Wing Sher stepped in immediately as the Pirates’ top player, winning the “A” singles bracket at the Quinnipiac Fall Tournament in her first collegiate competition. Sher had a six-match winning streak in the spring, including a five-set stretch where she did not drop a single game. She finished the season with a team-high 20 singles victories.

As in recent years, Seton Hall student-athletes continue to put forth a strong commitment to community outreach. We have strengthened existing relationships and have cultivated new ones over the course of the 2010-2011 academic year. This increase in volunteer efforts has been due in a large part to the priority Seton Hall athletics administrators and coaching staffs place on community service. This has been particularly true of the new men’s and women’s basketball coaches over the past year. The Pen Pal Program recently completed its 17th year. This has included Seton Hall student-athletes exchanging biweekly letters with the seventh-grade pen pals from Saint Francis Xavier School in Newark throughout the academic year. The program culminates with the grammar school children coming to campus to spend the day with their Seton Hall pen pals to celebrate National Student Athlete Day. The Seton Hall baseball team continued its relationship with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. During the 2009-10 year, the team adopted a local boy suffering from a brain tumor, and they continued the relationship through this past season, including celebration of his 8th birthday. He serves as team bat-boy and

the players offer support and encouragement, particularly during his most difficult times. Needless to say, both sides gain tremendously from the relationship. In addition, Seton Hall student-athletes continue to reach out to preschool children at Leaguers Head Start in Newark by reading to them throughout the school year. Events include Dr. Seuss Day, which emphasizes the importance of developing strong reading skills from an early age, and Trike-A-Thon, where the preschoolers spend a day on the University campus with their student-athlete mentors. We also celebrated with the Newark Boys and Girls Club Christmas party and visited the Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, to spread holiday cheer. New partnerships include visits to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston and the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in East Orange, volunteering with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, clinics with Team Walker in Jersey City and the Girl Scouts of New Jersey, donations to Eva’s Village in Paterson, and financial donations in memory of Jessica Moore, who is the fellow student who was tragically killed early in the academic year. The most popular event among student-athletes seems to be the biannual PB&J challenge where the teams, with the help of the Varsity Catholic missionaries, compete to see who can make the most peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The 3400 sandwiches, from two challenges, are then donated to St. John’s Food Kitchen in Newark and Eva’s Village in Paterson. Seton Hall student-athletes, coaches and athletics administrators take pride in their community outreach and are always looking for new ways to give back. ACADEMIC HONORS Women’s soccer senior Shannon Desmond and softball senior Michelle Reed were recently honored with very special academic awards this spring. Desmond was named valedictorian of Seton Hall’s Stillman School of Business for the graduating class of 2011. Reed was one of 24 winners of the 2010-11 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. Desmond, who graduated Summa Cum Laude, appeared in 67 matches for the Pirates over the last four seasons and made 56 starts. Although regarded more as a strong defender, she provided timely offensive outputs throughout her career including an assist on the game-winning goal against Cincinnati on Senior Day this season. The senior midfielder spent the entire 2010 spring semester studying abroad in Ireland. The four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star was honored and officially graduated with her classmates during commencement ceremonies the morning of May 16. The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Fa culty Athletics Representative Council.

Reed was named a two-time captain of the softball team and a catalyst in the leadoff spot in the bating order. She finished her career with 67 stolen bases, which eclipsed the school record. Reed batted a team-best .275 with four triples and 11 RBI, while swiping 18 bags. The outfielder also ranks eighth in career batting average (.307), fifth in hits (177), and seventh in runs scored (94). In addition, Reed was named the University’s BIG EAST Female Scholar Athlete in February. She was one of sixteen student-athletes - one from each BIG EAST institution - who was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Reed, a biology major, made the dean’s list six times and was a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.

Michael Oldham of the Men’s Swimming and Diving team was named the ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year along with Shannon Desmond and was a nominee for the College Athletics Administrators of New Jersey (CAANJ) Scholar Athlete of the Year award and BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year award along with Michelle Reed.

CoSIDA District 2 All Academic Team: Andrew Welker, Men’s Soccer

For the 2010-11 academic year, four Seton Hall athletics teams earned prestigious academic awards. The women’s tennis team earned the 2011 ITA All-Academic Team Award, with student-athletes Michelle Weerasinghe, Puiwing Sher and Rocio Portela-Berrios becoming 2011 ITA Scholars. The volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 academic year and the men’s golf team received the Golf Coaches’ Association of America Outstanding Team Academic Award. Both the men’s golf and volleyball teams earned national recognition for academic excellence for ranking in the top ten percentile for Academic Progress Rating (APR). The men’s and women’s swimming and diving team was named a Scholar All-American Program by the College Swimming Coaches’ Association of America.

SHU student-athletes work as hard in the classroom as they do in competition and their academic commitment is apparent. Senior student-athletes graduated in May with four Summa Cum Laude graduates, nine Magna Cum Laude graduates and five Cum Laude graduates. 64% of all Seton Hall student-athletes, which equals out to 159 students, were named BIG EAST Academic All Stars. 85 student-athletes were named to the Fall 2010 Dean’s List and 84 student-athletes were named to the Spring 2011 Dean’s List. Seton Hall inducted its seventh class (20 students) into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during an annual induction ceremony. This requires studentathletes to maintain a minimum 3.4 cumulative grade-point average through their junior and senior year. The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund hosts several fund-raising events throughout the year. Each of these unique events serve as one more way to support our athletics programs. They also serve as an excellent opportunity for Pirate Blue members, fans and alumni to interact with our student-athletes, coaches and administrators. In addition to our time-honored events, this past year Pirate Blue hosted two new, exciting

events - the Pirate Blue Student-Athlete Thanka-thon and the Piratesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; First Pitch Dinner. The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund held its first StudentAthlete Thank-a-Thon on Monday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 3 in the Seton Hall Sports Polling Center. All 14 Seton Hall athletics programs were represented as 36 student-athletes volunteered their time to call approximately 1000 Pirate Blue donors nationwide to thank them for their support of Seton Hall Athletics. The Piratesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; First Pitch Dinner provided the Seton Hall Baseball program with an opportunity for Pirate greats to meet the current roster and other alumni.

The Second Annual Pirate Blue Beefsteak Tip-Off Dinner held on October 6, 2010 hosted over 360 attendees at the Bishop Dougherty University Center. The night was a fun-filled opportunity for alumni and former student-athletes to mingle with current student-athletes and guests of the extended Pirate Blue family. Coach Willard and Coach Donovan shared their enthusiasm for the upcoming season with inspiring previews. Spirits were high and the anticipation for the start of the season was boosted.

As an added bonus to the golf outing, the winning foursome represented Seton Hall University in the Acura College Alumni Team Championship Cup at Pinehurst Resort on November 5-7, 2010.

GOLF PRACTICE RANGE

BASKETBALL COACHES SUITE

In the fall of 2010, a state-of-the-art indoor golf practice facility was constructed in the Richie Regan Athletics Center. Featuring a retractable hitting bay, updated swing analysis software and a 40’ x 20’ practice green, complete with undulation and two chipping areas, the men’s and women’s golf programs have a tremendous year-round practice area.

The Men’s Basketball offices received some upgrades this past season with new branded furniture, a redesign of Head Coach, Kevin Willard’s office, historical graphic design throughout the entire space and the addition of flat screen televisions.

FUTURE PROJECTS

The baseball and softball batting cages were renovated this year with new wall padding featuring the Pirate logos along with new wall and ceiling paint, ceiling tiles, wall to wall turf, pitching screens, practice mounds, and cage nets. The overhead lighting was also replaced increasing the visibility by 80 percent. Finally, championship banners for both our baseball and softball teams were hung in the new batting cage space.

Fund-raising is currently underway to install a new state of the art LED Scoreboard to Owen T. Carroll Field by the summer of 2012. Along with LED Scoreboard, future projects include Athletics Training room renovation, Student-Athlete Academic Center remodeling and New Locker Room facilities for the Richie Regan Recreation Center.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

VARSITY WEIGHT ROOM The 2,500-square foot varsity weight room inside the Richie Regan Athletics Center received a complete overhaul including a new appealing design, state-of-the-art equipment and marquee amenities. The renovation is made possible through the generosity of loyal Pirate Blue contributors, Hank ‘85 and Colleen D’Alessandro, who made the gift in honor of Monsignor Robert Sheeran who recently stepped down after serving 15 highly successful years as president of the University. The equipment is being provided by the Power Lift Company of Jefferson, Iowa. Dramatic improvements were made aesthetically to the facility as well, including graphics portraying current athletes and Seton Hall greats from yesteryear, expanded office space to allow for future additions to the strength and conditioning staff, flat screen televisions, and digital surround sound. All of Seton Hall’s existing equipment was donated to the Teaneck Armory and the 5oth Main Support Battalion of the National Guard. Members of their unit have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, some as recently as this past summer.

2011 NCAA REGIONAL

Last spring, Seton Hall University served as the host institution for the Regional Round of the 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. It marked the first time that the Pirates had hosted the national event since 1999. In conjunction with Seton Hall serving as host, the Prudential Center was the competition venue for two games of the regional semifinals on March 25, 2011 and the regional final on March 27, 2011. It was the first time the City of Newark has hosted the event. Regional sites for 2011, in addition to Newark, were Anaheim, which hosted for the fifth time since 1998; San Antonio, which has hosted seven times in the past 13 years; and New Orleans, which has hosted 10 times previously. Among the four sites, Newark drew the most fans over the two days of competition. The fan appeal was assisted by the participation of powerhouse teams that were included in the East Regional. Teams that advanced to the Newark Regional included the tournament’s overall #1 seed, Ohio State, #2 North Carolina, #4 Kentucky and, fresh off an upset of #3 Syracuse, #11 Marquette. In the first Regional Semifinal on March 25, #2 North Carolina blitzed #11 Marquette, 81-63. The Tar Heels Tyler Zeller scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in front of more than 18,300 fans.

The nightcap featured one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the tournament with #1 Ohio State taking on #4 Kentucky. In a game that lived up to its billing, eventual NBA Draft lottery pick Brandon Knight hit a jumper with only seconds remaining to vault Kentucky to a 62-60 upset victory. The Regional Final on March 27 also proved to be an NCAA classic. #2 North Carolina and #4 Kentucky were tied at 67 with just 3:18 remaining, but Kentucky finished the game on a 9-2 run to win the Regional with a 76-69 victory over the Tar Heels. Following the game, Kentucky was awarded the Regional trophy and Knight was named the Regional’s Most Valuable Player. The atmosphere around the Prudential Center throughout the event was extraordinarily baskeball-centric as well. The four-day event at the Prudential Center not only received praise from the tens of thousands of basketball spectators, but also the hoards of local and national media that descended on Newark. From TV and radio to print and online reporters, more than 525 members of the press attended the three games and surrounding events, making the Newark Regional one of the most-covered NCAA events ever. If first impressions are any indication, the Prudential Center may be a site for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I Championship several times again in the future.

The presentation quality of volleyball and women’s basketball broadcasts was enhanced by the play-by-play commentary of industry professional, Jon Schaffer. • New programming for PSN included 20 short ‘Realistic Fitness’ episodes with strength and conditioning coach Angelo Gingerelli and 10 behind-the-scenes episodes following the women’s volleyball and basketball teams. Fan-favorite webshow, OnBoard aired 14 new episodes. • PSN also allowed fans to view, for the first time, extra content, including episodes of the Seton Hall Basketball Show, coach and athletics director press conferences, promotional videos and various athletics video messages.
