PIRATE SWIM/DIVE COACHING STAFF 2011-12 SEASON PIRATE PROFILES

Ron Farina enters his 12th season as head coach of the Seton Hall men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams and is coming off one of the most successful seasons of his tenure. Last year Seton Hall saw more than 90 percent of its swimmers qualify for BIG EAST Championship competition and senior Kevin Webster became the first student-athlete in program history to compete at the NCAA Championships. Farina also coached the men’s team to a sixth-place showing at the BIG EAST Championship, the highest in program history, while the women’s team came in ninth, its best finish since 2005.

Webster also became the first swimmer in school history to be named Most Outstanding Male Swimmer at the BIG EAST Championships after winning the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke conference titles.

FARINA 12TH SEASON • RUTGERS 1993

Since his hiring, Farina has brought a new level of commitment to the Pirate programs. Since the 2000-01 season, Farina’s swimmers have earned wins against BIG EAST rivals Georgetown, Rutgers, Syracuse, Providence and Villanova, recorded 13 NCAA consideration standards, over 40 Senior National qualifiers, three Olympic Trial qualifiers, and shattered over 50 school records. In 2008-09 he traveled to Atlanta with eight members of the men’s team to compete in the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals in which his Pirates broke six school records, a conference record, and placed eighth overall ahead of Big 10 power-house Indiana. Farina’s student-athletes have also performed well in the classroom, highlighted by 36 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars a year ago continuing the increasing trend from previous years. In 2005-06, Matt Miklius was named the Seton Hall Scholar Athlete of the Year, as was Matt Geiger in 2007-08. Finally, two athletes were named to the CoSida Academic All-District II Squad, with one earning ESPN the Magazine/ CoSida Academic All-America honors.

Farina, the fifth coach in the history of the Seton Hall program, served as an assistant coach at both Rutgers University and Virginia Tech University and also founded the Liner Aquatics Club.

PIRATE SWIM/DIVE COACHING STAFF 2011-12 SEASON

Farina has remained active in Masters Swimming, ranking in the top 10 nationally in the 34-39 age group in 100, 200, 500, and 1,000-yard freestyle over the past four years. At Rutgers, Farina set school records in the 100, 200, and 500-yard freestyle, the 200, 400, and 800-yard freestyle relay, and was a senior national qualifier from 1991-93 in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Farina graduated in 1993 with a multiple degree in English, history, and political science. He received a Masters Degree in Sports Management from East Stroudsburg University in 2003.

Following his tenure at Rutgers, Farina went to Virginia Tech were he served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 1997-98 season. During Farina’s time at Virginia Tech he served as the primary coach for the sprinters and mid-distance freestylers while helping lead the Virginia Tech women’s team to a second-place finish in the Atlantic-10 Conference. In addition, Farina coached seven athletes to NCAA consideration and Senior National standards. Later, as founder of the Liner Aquatics Club in Phillipsburg, NJ, Farina was in charge of all aspects of the USA Swimming organization, including administration, coaching, and training swimmers of all ages.

A 1993 Rutgers graduate, Farina was a six-time school record holder for the Scarlet Knights and later worked for four years as an assistant coach for his alma mater following graduation. During his time at Rutgers, Farina helped coach the men’s team to a second-place finish in the Atlantic-10 in 1994 as well as nine athletes to NCAA consideration standards and Senior National time cuts.

Ron and his wife Amy currently reside in Easton, Pa. They have a daughter, Gianna, born March 19, 2002 and a son RJ, born February 26, 2004.

Kara Lennon (‘98) returns to Seton Hall University for her first season as an assistant swimming & diving coach. Lennon’s coaching career includes a wealth of club and recreational experience. Most recently, she headed The Homestead at The Farms program in Mooresville, N.C. In this role, Lennon was in charge of 120 swimmers ages 5-18 and led her team to a third place finish in the league championship.

No stranger to New Jersey, Lennon also has extensive local instructional experience. She has coached in East Hanover, the Kellogg Club in Morristown and Randolph, N.J. Lennon also has experience working with the Madison YMCA, USS and Club Program in New Jersey while providing private lessons for toddlers, high school students and adults training for triathlons. During her Pirate career, Lennon was a BIG EAST competitor in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, as well as the 100-yard backstroke. She was also a member of the 200 and 400yard freestyle relay teams. Prior to Seton Hall, Lennon was a nationally ranked swimmer for the Academy of St. Elizabeth in Madison, N.J. She captured an individual state title in the 50yard freestyle and was a member of 200-yard freestyle and 200yard medley state champion relay teams.

PIRATE SWIM/DIVE

Kurt Rotthoff is entering his fifth year with the program. In addition to being a volunteer assistant swim coach, Dr. Rotthoff is an Assistant Professor of Finance in the Stillman School of Business. He teaches Money & Banking, Sport Finance, and a seminar on Economics & Liberty to undergraduate students. He also teaches Economic & Finance Principles and Sport Finance to MBA students. Rotthoff was a four-year letter winner in swimming at Westminster College from 1998-2002. He was a team Tri-Captain and was named to the All-Conference Team all four seasons. Rotthoff is still a school record holder and holds 19 years of competitive experience.

Rotthoff also has administration experience serving as an administrative assistant to the Westminster College Athletic Director. He assisted in game operations for the college as well as completing the Title IX research and NCAA compliance regulations. 2011-12 SEASON

Rotthoff received his Ph.D. from Clemson University in Applied Economics in 2007, where he focused on Financial Economics, Financial Markets and Institutions, and Sport Finance. He also holds a Master’s in Economics (Clemson, 2004) and a Bachelor’s degree from Westminster College where he had a double major in Economics and Business Administration.

ASSISTANT COACH

Rotthoff served as a volunteer assistant swim coach at Clemson University for three years while he was a graduate student. He assisted with strength and conditioning and stroke technique critiquing at Clemson as well as at the University of Texas Swim Camp, where he was served as a coach and counselor for three years.

PJ Hughes enters his first season as the Seton Hall men’s and women’s diving coach. A 2010 Seton Hall University graduate, Hughes was a four-year letterwinner on the Pirates’ diving squad.

He was a two-time qualifier for the BIG EAST Championship, competing in the one-meter preliminaries during his senior season. Hughes personal best performance in the one-meter was 214.10 and his threemeter springboard personal record was 244.95.

ESTEBAN

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, SETON HALL UNIVERSITY

Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D., was appointed Interim President of Seton Hall University in July 2010. Since 2007, Dr. Esteban served as Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Seton Hall University. As Provost, he oversaw eight colleges and schools, University Libraries, and Enrollment Services. Dr. Esteban led the Strategic Planning initiative, collaborated with faculty and academic leaders on enhancing and adding undergraduate and graduate programs, establishing academic priorities, and strengthening the centrality of academics at SHU. Since 2009, Dr. Esteban has also been responsible for Enrollment Services and is leading the change in Enrollment Management Strategy. Dr. Esteban was previously Provost (2003-2007), Dean of the College of Business and Tenured Professor of Marketing at the University of Central Arkansas (2001-2003). He served as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at Arkansas Tech University (1996-2001) and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Victoria. Dr. Esteban was also a full-time instructor at the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines. Dr. Esteban is active in various national, regional, and community groups and served on a national task force that designed a Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA) for universities and colleges. He is also involved in Leadership Education for AsianPacifics (LEAP) as a mentor and faculty member. Dr. Esteban served as team chair and consultant evaluator for the largest regional accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission and also served as a member of their Accreditation Review Council. At the local level, Dr. Esteban was past chair of the boards of the Conway Chamber of Commerce and the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shelter of Central Arkansas. And served on the board of the Faulkner County Habitat for Humanity He is currently a member of the Board of the Asian-Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), and the South Orange Performing Arts Center. Dr. Esteban has published papers in refereed journals and proceedings, and presented papers at national, international and regional conferences such as TIMS/ORSA, American Psychological Association, Western Decision Sciences Conference, and the International Trade and Finance Association. Dr. Esteban received a Ph.D. in Administration from the Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Irvine in 1993 and a Master of Science in Japanese Business Studies from Chaminade University in Honolulu in 1986. He earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. Dr. Esteban received specialized training in Leading Transformation and Change at Harvard Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Graduate School of Education, and he completed the Japan Management Program at the Japan-America Institute for Management Science in Honolulu. He also has private sector work experience in the Philippines and in Japan.

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

of the soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, Iona created Rice Oval Softball field, the first on-campus home for the softball program.

Lyons comes to Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and 21 Division I athletic programs. He has also shown a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.

Before elevating to his current role, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. This included, but was not limited to, all fundraising activities and marketing for the department including the annual golf tournament, sponsorships, and the annual fund.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department has seen unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. The men’s cross country team continued its storied success earning a second straight national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship in November 2008. The program has finished in the Top-10 at the national championship in each of the last nine years. Along with the University of Wisconsin, no other program has seen the same success. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have established a reputation for being one of the top programs in the MAAC. The women enjoyed their most successful five-year stint in program history and have made three postseason appearances in the last four seasons. The men’s program earned an NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, won 21 games in 2009-10 and has continued to rank among the leaders in the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area. Other Gael programs that saw success under Lyons tutelage have been the women’s cross country team with five straight MAAC Championships, the softball program earning its first ever bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010, the men’s soccer program with a MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and a MAAC finals appearance in 2010. The volleyball team reached the NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the MAAC finals in 2010. In addition, Iona’s women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo programs continued to excel in 2009-10. Where Lyons truly made his mark at Iona has been in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Among several enhancements, the most dramatic and impressive changes were the opening of both the Hynes Athletics Center and the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center in January of 2006. Lyons also oversaw the complete renovation of the varsity locker rooms - where each program now has its own space for the first time in school history, the addition of a video screening room for its athletic programs as well as the resurfacing of both the Hynes Center basketball/volleyball arena floor and the surface of Mazzella Field, home

Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He oversaw all NCAA, MAAC, and institutional policies and regulations, as well as team scheduling, student-athlete financial aid, the student-athlete advisory committee, and payroll for all staff as well as student-workers. Lyons also coordinated the NCAA certification process, from the self study to on-campus visits. As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons. A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College. Lyons has served on several committees at the national and conference level. He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships and Sports Management Cabinet where he serves as a liaison to the men’s and women’s ice hockey committees. Lyons served as the Chairman of MAAC Cross Country Committee and previously as chairman of the MAAC Committee on Athletics Administration. He also serves on the MAAC Marketing and Strategic Planning Committees. Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, a pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical faculty at Columbia University.

Intercollegiate athletics is a rewarding extracurricular activity that can add a special dimension to student life. At Seton Hall, all student-athletes participate in the academic counseling program. Director of Academic Support Services for student-athletes, Matt Geibel, and his staff help ensure that student-athletes successfully balance their commitments to academics and athletics. Geibel, Associate Director Amanda DiDonato, Academic Advisor Ryan Westman and two graduate assistant, Kaitlyn Rogers and Zachary Romash provide support along with learning consultants and numerous tutors. They monitor classroom performance by maintaining contact with faculty, monitoring study halls, facilitating advisement and overseeing compliance with university and NCAA academic regulations. The office of Academic Support also coordinates all institutional, regional and national award recognition.

Life Skills Mission To provide life skills support in the areas of academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service through the distribution of NCAA, BIG EAST Conference and Seton Hall resources. Seton Hall Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Life Skills program will provide on-going educational opportunities to student-athletes to further develop these areas and make our student-athletes into successful leaders of the future. Athletics Excellence Seton Hall is committed to excellence in all areas and strives to provide its programs with the resources to succeed on the field of competition. The Department of Athletics will seek out top professionals to serve as coaches, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning specialists who can impart expert knowledge and direction to the student-athletes. Academic Excellence Seton Hall provides a comprehensive academic support program for its Student-Athletes. Specifically, the Office of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes provides tutoring, review sessions, study groups and writing development for Seton Hall student-athletes, as well as regular interaction with faculty. Career Development Seton Hall provides a comprehensive career development program for its student-athletes in conjunction with The Career Center at Seton Hall University. Components of the program range from resume writing and interviewing techniques, to the graduate school application processes, seminars from business leaders within the Seton Hall community and education on post-graduate scholarship opportunities. Personal Development Seton Hall provides several seminars on different personal topics throughout the year. Workshops vary from sports nutrition to hazing prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, and business etiquette.

Seton Hall student-athletes enjoy a 2,500-square foot varsity weight room, which opened in the fall of 1997. The facility offers versatile, multi-purpose and comprehensive upper and lower body strength training equipment. Among the features of the facility are an Olympic lifting area and cardiovascular equipment such as Stairmasters, treadmills, bicycles and a versaclimber. The room offers free weights, target-loaded machines and circuit training stations. Khyl Farrison and Angelo Gingerelli work with each team to provide expert coaching and guidance.

In so doing we strive to limit risk and exposure to injury mechanisms, provide immediate response to all medical needs of the student-athlete and rehabilitate any and all injuries suffered by the student-athlete. Recognizing Seton Hall University’s long and distinguished athletic history, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund was founded in 1985 by Pirate legend Richie Regan ’53 as the University’s athletic fund-raising vehicle. THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Championship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households. The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 201112 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville). The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games. Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprecedented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louisville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past eight years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
