In five years at Seton Hall, head coach Kris Zeiter has already become one of the most accomplished volleyball coaches the program has seen. In his tenure, he has brought the program to its first two BIG EAST Championship appearances since 1994, brought in the school’s alltime dig and kill leaders, and comes into this year with 30 conference wins, the second most by any SHU coach.

2010 REVIEW

In 2010, he led the Pirates to a 7-7 record in the BIG EAST, including the program’s first win over preseason favorite Louisivlle on the road. The seven victories tied the Pirates for sixth in the conference and sent the Hall to its second straight conference tournament bid. One of his first recruits, Sarah Osmun, also became the school’s all-time kill leader in the upset win against the Cardinals.

The 2009 season saw the Pirates earn their first trip to the BIG EAST Championship in fifteen years. Zeiter’s squad went 16-12 in the 2007 season, the best season for the Pirates since 2003 when SHU went 20-13. He also led the program to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in a decade in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, Zeiter posted the most wins of any first year head coach, guiding the Pirates went 16-14 with a 5-9 mark in BIG EAST play. The record showed a two match overall improvement and one match better in the conference from the 2005 season.

Zeiter, a native of Dallas, Texas, was the head coach at NCAA Division II Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y., from 1999-2003, posting a 65-60 record. In 2001, he led the squad to a third-place NYCAC finish, its first-ever NCAA Northeast regional ranking (7th) and its first trip to the ECAC tournament where Concordia finished second. In 2002, Coach Zeiter guided the Clippers to a 17-12 overall record and a ninth place regional finish. In five years, Concordia reached the NYCAC playoffs each year and went 29-27 in the conference.

Allie Yaeger returns for her fifth year with Seton Hall after helping Kris Zeiter take the program to back-to-back BIG EAST Championship appearances. Yaeger’s experience and knowledge of the game has made a significant impact on the program. Her responsibilities include recruiting, practice and game preparation, organizing SHU’s summer volleyball camps, as well as assisting Zeiter in all aspects of the Seton Hall program.

2010 REVIEW

Prior to coming to Seton Hall, Yeager was an assistant coach at Binghamton for two seasons. She was responsible for helping the team with defensive and serve reception along with overall ball control. She was also involved with recruiting, making travel arrangements, and aiding various other aspects of the program. Prior to her time at Binghamton, Yaeger served as an undergraduate assistant at her alma-mater, Wright State, during the 2004-05 season. ASSISTANT COACH

SEASON PREVIEW

PIRATE VOLLEYBALL

E

ntering his sixth season, head coach Kris Zeiter has led the volleyball program on a steady rise up the BIG EAST standings. The Pirates tied for sixth place in the regular season standings in 2010 and have made back-to-back appearances in the conference tournament. Despite the loss of Sarah Osmun, the school’s all time leader in kills, to graduation, the future remains bright as the Hall looks to challenge for a BIG EAST Championship.

COACHING STAFF

“I think we took another step forward last year,” said Zeiter. “We moved up in the standings, won more matches in the conference, and we gained more experience. Now, we have a lot of players who have played in a BIG EAST Championship setting.”

2011 SEASON

“We were also able to knock off Louisville on the road, and they ended up winning the league last year,” Zeiter continued. “I don’t think that was a fluke. I think that’s how good we can be. We just need to play at that level on a consistent basis this year.”

PIRATE PROFILES

Senior opposite side hitter Meghan Matusiak will lead the offensive attack in 2011. Matusiak reached the 1,000-kill mark for her career in the Pirates’ final match of 2010 and was named Second Team All-BIG EAST. She was fifth in the conference in points per set and sixth in kills per set while earning a pair of BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nods. Matusiak, who is seventh all-time at the school in kills, will be looked to for leadership on and off the court in her final season. “Meghan has been a big-time player for us,” stated Zeiter. “She’s a four-year starter, been named All-BIG EAST, and now she’s a captain. She’s going to get more swings than she has

in the past, but she’s prepared for that and is ready for another big season.”

2010 REVIEW

Krissy Wrobel, a senior middle, has led the team in blocks the past two seasons and will again serve as a physical defensive presence for the Hall. Wrobel missed the spring season due to injury but is expected to be back in the mix in time for the 2011 campaign. Senior Meghan Bonk enjoyed a standout spring after switching from outside hitter to middle blocker. Bonk saw limited playing time last season but will challenge for a starting role this year after demonstrating the ability to contribute offensively from her new position.

RECORD BOOK

“Meghan Bonk was lights out for us in the middle during the spring,” said Zeiter. “She’s going to get more playing time this year, especially early on with Krissy still a little banged up. She might be the most talented offensive middle we’ve had since Tricia Meyers. When Krissy gets healthy, she’s going to want to play. She’s a three-year starter and she is really motivated to get back on the floor.”

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY

Junior Morgan DeVries, a two-year starter in the middle, returns after leading the Pirates with a .208 hitting percentage in 2010. DeVries has been a solid offensive threat since her arrival on campus, and the Hall will look for her to continue to improve defensively in 2011. A pair of freshmen will join the roster and compete for time in the middle. Olivia Desormey comes from a strong program at St. Charles East in Illinois, where she was a three-time all-conference performer. Ashani Rubin, an athletic presence with considerable upside, arrives from Merion Mercy Academy in Pennsylvania. “Morgan’s another player with a lot of experience,” Zeiter said.

6

Sophomore Alyssa Warren returns after an impressive rookie campaign at libero. Warren recorded 520 digs, a Seton Hall freshman record and the third-highest single-season total in school history. Her 4.44 digs per set ranked fourth in the BIG EAST. Junior Kalie Marshall, an experienced defensive specialist and libero, is also back.

Hannah Hugeback, a junior, is the top returning outside hitter for the Pirates. She started all 31 matches in 2010 and tied for the team-lead with 13 double-doubles. Hugeback was second on the team with 329 digs and third with 315 kills, and the Hall will look to her for even more production following the departure of Osmun. Also back are sophomores Simona Sekulova, who showed promise early on before missing the majority of the season with a leg injury, and Kelly Palma, an opposite side hitter.

“Alyssa sets the bar high. She wants to be the best the libero in the league and is motivated to accomplish that. She had a great freshman season and I expect her to be even better with a year of experience under her belt.”

“Hannah’s been here for two-years and we expect her to be among the team leaders in kills and she’s gotten better and better each year,” Zeiter said of the co-captain. “She’s really stepped up and become a leader, and I expect her to have another strong season. Simona and Stacey will fight for that other outside spot, but because we don’t have a lot of numbers there, they should both see time.

“We talk about being consistent all the time,” Zeiter said “Our early season schedule will prepare us for that. We’ve got another tough non-conference season ahead of us. We’re playing five or six NCAA Tournament teams to get us ready for the BIG EAST season.”

Freshmen Stacey Manthorpe and Jamie Froning will join the program in 2011 and look to crack the lineup on the outside. Manthorpe, a four-year starter at Merion Mercy Academy with multiple all-state honors, can also play on the right side, as can Froning, a three-year starter from Mater Dei High School in California.

2011 SETON HALL UNIVERSITY VOLLEYBALL

The Pirates will face a tough non-conference schedule, featuring matches against North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and future BIG EAST member TCU. Eight of the Hall’s 14 conference tilts will be played on the road.

“Our goal is to win it all this year,” Zeiter continued. “I know it’s going to be tough to jump from sixth to first, but with everybody back and the incoming class we have coming in, I feel we have enough talent to compete for a title, and get that automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.”

7

COACHING STAFF 2011 SEASON PIRATE PROFILES

“She has worked on some things we’ve asked her to improve on and will be on the floor a lot. Olivia Desormey looks good so far. She seems to be a smart player and doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes. With Ashani we might try to develop her a little bit more, but she is the most athletic player at the position so we have no problem putting her on the floor.”

“With Olivia and Shelbey, we have two more than capable setters at that position,” Zeiter said. “Olivia knows our offense, and she’s been running it for two years. Shelbey has all of the ability to step in right away and contribute. It’s an open competition, but whoever wins the job will be great. It’s a good problem to have and it’s a situation I’m looking forward to see unfold.”

2010 REVIEW

Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe, the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year and a PrepVolleyball Senior Ace, will also challenge for time as the Pirates’ setter. The twin sister of Stacey, she has earned a variety of all-American honors and is one of the most decorated players to join the Seton Hall program. Another freshman setter, Sam Duncan, joins the team after playing four years of varsity volleyball at Sahuaro High School in Arizona.

RECORD BOOK

Olivia Trudeau returns for her junior season after serving as the starting setter in her first two years. Last season, she finished fourth in the BIG EAST with 10.31 assists per set and tied for the team-lead with 13 double-doubles. Trudeau, who is already fourth all-time on the career assist list at Seton Hall, is also a strong and versatile defensive presence.

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY

“Stacey Manthorpe is an All-American right-side, so that’s her best position and Jamie Froning has been a really pleseant surprise so far in camp.

In our valued-centered curricula, programs and extracurricular activities, we focus on academics and devleopment of the individual. Our graduates continue to prove themselves as leaders in their professions and communities. Seton Hall gives you all the resources you would find in a large university. But, with only 5,200 undergraduates and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio, you get the personal attention of a small liberal arts college.

We encourage ongoing, across-the-curriculum discussions on the ethics of business, medicine, teaching and other disciplines and urge you to use your personal morals and values in debating issues and making decisions. Underscoring our national prominence in emphasizing service learning and nurturing the spirit, the John Templeton Foundation has named Seton Hall as one of the country’s leaders in developing the character of its students.

ON CAMPUS THE SIGHTS OF ONE OF NEW JERSEY’S BEAUTIFUL AND MOST HISTORIC CAMPUSES

Seton Hall is about caring and sharing - to pass a torch to students that is burning brighter than the one passed to us. Tony Lovisick, PH.D. Chair, Finance and Legal Studies Stillman School of Business

Our faculty comprised of a distinguished group of scholars that have earned advanced degrees both in the U.S. and abroad. You will study alongside these learned men and women collaborating with them in developing new concepts and researching meaningful topics. And don’t think they won’t be involved in your academic careers - personal attention is at the heart of academic excellence.

I give the highest importance to my contact with students ... they are the school’s most important asset. Ambassador s. azmat hassan Senior Faculty Associate Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations

The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Millburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and your are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. And don’t forget about the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.

Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

PATRICK

LYONS

Director of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

of the soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, Iona created Rice Oval Softball field, the first on-campus home for the softball program.

Lyons comes to Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and 21 Division I athletic programs. He has also shown a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.

Before elevating to his current role, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. This included, but was not limited to, all fundraising activities and marketing for the department including the annual golf tournament, sponsorships, and the annual fund.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department has seen unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. The men’s cross country team continued its storied success earning a second straight national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship in November 2008. The program has finished in the Top-10 at the national championship in each of the last nine years. Along with the University of Wisconsin, no other program has seen the same success. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have established a reputation for being one of the top programs in the MAAC. The women enjoyed their most successful five-year stint in program history and have made three postseason appearances in the last four seasons. The men’s program earned an NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, won 21 games in 2009-10 and has continued to rank among the leaders in the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area. Other Gael programs that saw success under Lyons tutelage have been the women’s cross country team with five straight MAAC Championships, the softball program earning its first ever bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010, the men’s soccer program with a MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and a MAAC finals appearance in 2010. The volleyball team reached the NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the MAAC finals in 2010. In addition, Iona’s women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo programs continued to excel in 2009-10. Where Lyons truly made his mark at Iona has been in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Among several enhancements, the most dramatic and impressive changes were the opening of both the Hynes Athletics Center and the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center in January of 2006. Lyons also oversaw the complete renovation of the varsity locker rooms - where each program now has its own space for the first time in school history, the addition of a video screening room for its athletic programs as well as the resurfacing of both the Hynes Center basketball/volleyball arena floor and the surface of Mazzella Field, home

46

Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He oversaw all NCAA, MAAC, and institutional policies and regulations, as well as team scheduling, student-athlete financial aid, the student-athlete advisory committee, and payroll for all staff as well as student-workers. Lyons also coordinated the NCAA certification process, from the self study to on-campus visits. As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons. A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College. Lyons has served on several committees at the national and conference level. He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships and Sports Management Cabinet where he serves as a liaison to the men’s and women’s ice hockey committees. Lyons served as the Chairman of MAAC Cross Country Committee and previously as chairman of the MAAC Committee on Athletics Administration. He also serves on the MAAC Marketing and Strategic Planning Committees. Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, a pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical faculty at Columbia University.

THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Championship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households. The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 201112 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville). The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games. Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprecedented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louisville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past eight years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
