We believe in Grönsamhet
Our production units
Our vision is to do business where everyone prospers – not just ourselves but also our customers, nature and society. When a business profits everyone, we call that ‘Grönsamhet’. We came up with it by using the Swedish word for “green” and “profit”. Setra is currently making several strategic investments for the future. We are building a planing mill in Hasselfors with the most modern technology on the market, while in Långshyttan we are developing a wood industry hub for cross-laminated timber and components for the door and window industry. Here we are combining the superb raw material from the local area with the expertise in finger-jointing and lamination that already exists at our nearby glulam factory. This is the very definition of Grönsamhet, if you ask us. We are also working to increase the value of our bioproducts while at the same time contribute to the transition to a bioeconomy. Together with fuel company Preem, we are exploring the possibility of extracting bio-oil from sawdust. This can then replace fossil oil and be refined into renewable fuel. The constantly growing and sustainably managed forest is a source of enormous untapped potential. Since wood is renewable and binds carbon, every building made of wood, rather than steel and concrete, cuts emissions of greenhouse gases. Those of us who work with wood therefore have a key role to play in supporting the construction industry to reduce its carbon footprint. When Setra achieved one of the best ever results in 2018, our response was to raise the bar for our sustainability work. Our objective is to become the wood products company with the strongest sustainability profile in Europe by 2025. Reaching that objective will require extensive knowledge, new thinking, high industrial capacity and smart processes. We know it can be done – and we can create Grönsamhet along the way.

Setra’s value chain Setra’s sustainability measures involve taking responsibility for how we affect people and the environment through the entire value chain – from forest to final product. The starting point is to reduce any negative footprint and increase the value and positive impact of our operations at every stage.
The sawmills generate thermal energy using their own bioproducts.
For crosslam customers, Setra takes care of the whole chain, from planning and manufacture to delivery. Wooden buildings store carbon dioxide.

Focus on the right issues
results are therefore an important issue for both Setra and its stakeholders.
Every aspect of our business must be sustainable. To make sure the sustainability work makes as great an impact as possible, we focus on issues where Setra has a significant impact, a clear responsibility and the ability to contribute. Our key sustainability issues are as follows:
Responsible forest management Setra’s business begins in the forest, and its products are made from wood. As a purchaser of timber, Setra has a major responsibility to set the right raw material requirements.
Economic performance If the financial strength to run and develop the business is lacking, then the capacity to improve sustainability work will also be lacking. Financial
Resource efficiency Our production process utilises the entire log. This is vital from both a resource and an economic perspective. The bioproducts left over – chips, sawdust and bark – are sold

on as cellulose chips, biofuel or animal bedding. Our climate impact Setra’s commercial operations generate emissions of greenhouse gases. We work continously to improve our climate performance and reduce our energy consumption. At the same time, wood products bind carbon and the benefits of using wood for construction and housing exceed the emissions generated by production and transport. The climate issue is a priority area for all of Setra’s stakeholders.
People living in wooden homes feel better.
Customer portfolio Our sawn and processed wood products and bioproducts must meet the customer’s quality requirements and be delivered on time. Technical expertise, customer interaction, service and availability are integral parts of this offering. Working environment, occupational health and safety Satisfied employees are a prerequisite for being able to run a high-quality business. Working actively on safety issues is a vital consideration for Setra and its stakeholders.
New factory Crosslam and components
Climate-smart raw material We work with the best raw material in the world – wood. Wood is renewable, and benefits the climate with its mere presence. As the forest grows, it absorbs carbon. Young, growing trees take up more carbon than older trees. This is why forest management is associated with major benefit for the climate, provided it is conducted sustainably and with care. Sweden has a long tradition of sustainable forest management, based on developing the economic, ecological and social values of the forest in balance. As such, growth of the forest is greater than the volume harvested. Today there is around twice as much forest in Sweden as there was 100 years ago.
Pine and spruce are the raw materials used in Setra’s production. All wood comes from responsibly managed forests and can be traced all the way back to the harvesting site. The trees tend to have grown just tens of kilometres from the sawmill. The timber purchased by Setra is either certified or checked in accordance with FSC® and PEFC™. It also meets the requirements in the European Timber Regulation. Setra’s sawmills and processing units are certified according to the FSC and PEFC standards.
Sustainability in three figures 1.71 million 48% Setra has cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 48% per cubic metre of sawn timber since 2011, excluding transport.
cubic metres Setra manufactured 1.71 million cubic metres of sawn wood products in 2018. That is enough to build 48,800 standard detached houses. Many apartment blocks are now also built with timber frames.
High demand for new products Setra is making a major investment in Långshyttan. What does it involve? We are creating a new hub for processed wood products to meet the demand from the wood and construction industries. We have already begun to manufacture door and window components and we will have our crosslam factory up and running in early 2020. We will then begin producing structural elements in cross-laminated timber, a smart solution in terms of engineering, cost and for the climate. What are the benefits of crosslam? It’s extremely strong and dimensionally stable in relation to its low weight. The structural elements are made from solid prefabricated sheets that can be prepared with high precision in the factory. This makes the construction phase fast and smooth, with fewer errors, lower costs and a better working environment for the builders. Building with crosslam is an entirely different approach that gives you full control from idea to completion. We believe this is the future for construction. What can it be used for? The applications are almost limitless. crosslam is so strongly cross-bonded and durable in relation to its low weight that architects can let their imagination run free. It is particularly good for projects requiring high standards of load-bearing and strength, plus it provides good protection against fire. Demand has really taken off in recent years, with crosslam increasingly being chosen for large structures such as tall apartment blocks, industrial properties and schools.
1,366 thousand tonnes Wood binds the equivalent of 800 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic metre of sawn timber. Setra’s production output for 2018 has captured as much as 1,366 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide. That equates to the greenhouse gas emissions of around 135,000 people in Sweden. A stamp of quality Royal, Setra’s shipping mark, has been used to brand sawn wood products since 1943. The stamp indicates the grade of the timber, with the highest grade represented by Royal with two crowns. Once the packaging has been removed, the red mark clearly shows that the sawn wood product comes from Setra.
Our products Setra’s portfolio of processed products includes glulam, joists, construction timber, cladding, decking and components for doors and windows. Our brand new wood industry hub in Långshyttan will begin manufacturing cross-laminated timber in early 2020. Setra’s raw material is sourced from the forests near our plants in some of the world’s best areas for softwood. Our sawn wood products customers, who operate mainly in the wood processing industry, include building and furniture manufacturers. The largest markets are Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
Cross-laminated timber (crosslam) comprises planed timber that is glued together in layers at 90 degrees to each other. Modern CNC technology can be used to produce precision-cut components that fit together perfectly, complete with holes for doors, windows and power sockets.
