Grönsamhet and the climate benefit of wood DEMAND FOR WOOD as a construction material

is rising, and there is every indication that the trend is only in its infancy. The construction industry accounts for substantial greenhouse gas emissions and rapid change is needed to cut those emissions. Wood is the only renew able construction material and it generates a significantly lower climate footprint than steel and concrete, as confirmed by comparative lifecycle analyses. By choosing wood, whether for construc tion, furniture, pulp or renewable energy, you are part of the green transition and what we call ‘Grönsamhet’ – Green Profit. This is also the name of our vision: to do business that we, as well as others – our clients, society and nature – can profit from. When a business profits everyone, we call that Grönsamhet. At Setra, we want to achieve Grönsamhet in everything we do. It is therefore particularly good to know that, by storing carbon dioxide for the whole of its life, wood continues to benefit the climate year after year all over the world.

Wood stores carbon dioxide for the whole of its life, making it a climate-smart material choice in construction. In Sweden, the effect is as much as 764 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic metre of sawn timber. The diagram shows emissions and storage of CO2 per m3 sawn timber. SETRA IS ONE of Sweden’s largest wood

products companies. We process raw material from responsibly managed forests and offer climate-friendly products for construction, housing, the paper and pulp industry and energy production. GLULAM IS A vital component in wood

FROM AUTUMN 2020, Setra’s new

construction projects. Glulam beams are used for the structural frame of large sports halls and apartment blocks. It is also the material of choice for trades people, DIYers and artisans. Glulam is strong and dimensionally stable, while also being easy to work with and shape. With among the most efficient glulam production in Sweden, Setra has built up a huge breadth and depth of expertise in this area. Our manufacturing process saves on resources and we deliver to the customer in just six working days. The glulam beams are made of 100% Swedish wood, mainly spruce but also pine.

window components and structural elements in cross-laminated timber. We also sell bioproducts such as bark, sawdust and wood chips. To meet the demand for climatesmart construction materials, not least for apartment blocks in wood, recent years have seen us investing to become a full-service supplier of wood construction projects.

trimming and planing line in Hasselfors will begin producing planed construction timber, includ ing roof truss timber and joists. The timber will be sorted mechanically and graded according to the stand ards that apply in the respective markets. Having the planing and trimming integrated into the same process cuts out a whole stage and enables the end product to be created under one roof. This brings many benefits, not least the savings on transport.

wood industry hub in Långshyttan, which brings major benefits for you as a customer, including a deep well of expertise, smoother production and less transport. Crosslam and glulam are renew able, climate-smart alternatives to steel and concrete, which account for a large part of the construction industry’s climate footprint. Demand for crosslam and glulam has really taken off in recent years. Modern industrial construction techniques using cross-laminated timber make it possible to create large-scale projects in a more effi cient and competitive manner than ever before. People in the industry

are increasingly appreciating the possibilities and benefits of wood as a construction material for both res idential and industrial properties. Setra can offer a complete, full-service solution for your wood construction project. Our new crosslam factory is located in Långshyttan. It is an ultra-modern plant where we can manufacture the largest crosslam elements on the market. CNC (Computer Numer ical Control) technology enables us to cut out openings for doors, windows and installations with digital precision in the factory. This in turn makes logistics, transport and assembly faster and more convenient than with traditional

materials such as steel and concrete. The proximity to Setra’s glulam factory, also located in Långshyttan, is a huge advantage. Glulam is used in most crosslam projects, so this brings several commercial synergies for the customer in terms of both production and transport. At Setra, we apply a project model where we maintain a close dialogue with the customer and provide expertise in project planning and structural engineering, so that even those building in wood for the first time can move forward with confidence. The flexibility in the factory enables us to optimise the production of structural elements and minimise waste.

Bioproducts At our plants, we let nothing go to waste and make sure we use 100% of every log. Bark, sawdust and wood chips are turned into biofuel for use in heating plants and to run our own operations. The sawdust can also be turned into pyrolysis oil as a replacement for fossil oil in fuel. Meanwhile, the fresh raw chips – cellulose chips – are a key raw material in the paper and pulp industry.

SPRUCE is the dominant wood for building and construction. It is also

well suited to visible applications, such as cladding and glulam. We offer Swedish spruce products with a slow-grown, fine-knotted structure that meets high strength requirements.

The volume of wood products that Setra sold in 2019 (1,666,000 m3) stores around 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. That equates to the greenhouse gas emissions of around 150,000 Swedes.

PINE is a relatively soft wood that is easy to work with and has a wide range

of applications. Setra’s pine products can be used for everything from structural timber and decking to interior cladding, furniture and flooring. The wood offers high strength and is easy to saw and work with.

CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER, or crosslam, is

a mass timber panel made of planed wood that is glued together in layers at 90 degrees to each other. The material is dimensionally stable and has a high load-bearing capacity in relation to its own weight. It is ideal for structures that require a high degree of strength and load-bearing capacity while being fire-resistant and relatively light. A building in crosslam differs from equivalents in concrete and steel in that the crosslam panels offer a high degree of prefabrication, with openings for doors, windows and cables cut out in the factory. Convenient transport and efficient assem bly make crosslam a climate-smart choice for your next construction project.
