Grönsamhet and the climate benefit of wood DEMAND FOR WOOD as a construction material is rising,

and there is every indication that the trend is only in its infancy. The construction industry accounts for substantial greenhouse gas emissions and rapid change is needed to cut those emissions. Wood is the only renewable construction material and it generates a significantly lower climate footprint than steel and concrete, as confirmed by comparative lifecycle analyses. Our wood products are climate positive and our goal is for Setra to be climate neutral by 2030, excluding foreign distribution. By choosing wood, whether for construction, furniture, pulp or renewable energy, you are part of the green transition and what we call Grönsamhet. This is also the name of our vision: to do business that we, as well as others – our clients, society and nature – can profit from. When a business profits everyone, we call that “Grönsamhet”. At Setra, we want to achieve Grönsamhet in everything we do. It is therefore particularly good to know that wood stores carbon dioxide for the whole of its life, and that our wood products continue to benefit the climate year after year, all over the world.

100 %

Setra buys in all its wood from sustainably managed forests in Sweden.

Setra’s value chain Our value chain stretches from the forest and out into society, where our wood products become sustainable homes and where our bioproducts are used to make cellulose and biofuels. SETRA’S WORK and responsibility begin when we choose

locally produced wood from sustainably managed forests. We take our customers’ needs as our starting point and make sure to use the whole log. Whatever is not used for wood products becomes bioproducts and is incorporated into the production of paper goods, biofuel and renewable fuel, or used in our own heating system. By taking an approach where we analyse shortcomings and work on constant improvements,

we build up commitment at our workplaces and improve production efficiency. We strive to find climate-smart solutions in the fields of logistics and transport. When our wood products are used in buildings and furnishing solutions, or for renewable energy, the value and climate benefit from the forest is relocated to society as a whole. In this way, we are helping to reduce the climate footprint of the construction industry and our customers alike.

We deliver your wood construction project SETRA IS ONE of Sweden’s largest wood

products companies. We process raw material from responsibly managed forests and offer climate-friendly products for construction, housing, the paper and pulp industry and energy production. Our product range spans from sawn wood products and planed construction timber to value-added products such as glulam, door and

window components and structural elements in cross-laminated timber. We also sell bioproducts such as bark, sawdust and wood chips. To meet the demand for climatesmart construction materials, not least for apartment blocks in wood, recent years have seen us investing to become a full-service supplier of wood construction projects.

The observation tower at Naturum Dalarna is built entirely out of wood for aesthetic and environmental reasons. The new observation tower in Siljansnäs is the first FSC® certified building in Sweden.

Deep well of expertise in Långshyttan SETRA HAS ESTABLISHED a full

wood industry hub in Långshyttan, where we combine high-tech manufacturing with expertise in wood processing. CLT and glulam are renewable, climate-smart alternatives to steel and concrete, which account for a large part of the construction industry’s climate footprint. Demand for CLT and glulam has really taken off in recent years. Modern industrial construction techniques using cross-laminated timber make it possible to create large-scale projects in a more efficient and competitive manner than ever before. People in the industry are increasingly appreciating the possibilities and benefits of wood as a construction material

for both residential and industrial properties. Setra can offer a complete, full-service solution for your wood construction project. Our new CLT factory is located in Långshyttan. It is an ultra-modern plant where we can manufacture the largest CLT elements on the market. Combined with our high-bay warehouse, this allows us to offer flexible widths, optimise production and minimise waste. CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology enables us to cut out openings for doors, windows and installations with digital precision in the factory. This in turn makes logistics, transport and assembly faster and more convenient than with traditional materials such as

steel and concrete. The proximity to Setra’s glulam factory, also located in Långshyttan, is a huge advantage. Glulam is used in most CLT projects, so this brings several commercial synergies for the customer in terms of both production and transport. In collaboration with a partner, we are able to supply timber frames on a turnkey basis, plus we offer fossil-free distribution. Our project model involves a close dialogue with the customer and we provide expertise in project planning and structural engineering, so that you can move forward with confidence, even if you’re building in wood for the first time.

construction projects. Glulam beams are used for the structural frame of large sports halls and apartment blocks, as well as being the material of choice for tradespeople, DIYers and artisans. Glulam is strong and dimensionally stable, while also being easy to work with and shape. With among the most efficient glulam production in Sweden, Setra has built up a huge breadth and depth of expertise in this area. We manufacture glulam in a resource-efficient production process, creating beams made from 100% Swedish wood, mainly spruce but also pine.

High-tech manufacture Our ultra-modern factory houses the largest glue press on the market, ensuring flexible production and less waste.

Cross-laminated timber CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER (CLT or

crosslam) is a mass timber panel made of planed wood that is glued together in layers at 90 degrees to each other. The material is dimensionally stable and has a high load-bearing capacity in relation to its own weight. It is ideal for structures that require a high degree of strength and load-bearing capacity while being fire-resistant and relatively light. A building in CLT differs from equivalents in concrete and steel in that the crosslam panels offer a high degree of prefabrication, with openings for doors, windows and cables cut out in the factory. Convenient transport and efficient assembly make CLT a climate-smart choice for your next construction project.

Planed products

Wood products store carbon dioxide

SETRA’S NEW trimming and planing

line in Hasselfors is where we produce planed construction timber in a range of dimensions, including roof truss timber and joists. The timber is sorted mechanically and graded according to the standards that apply in our markets. Having the planing and trimming integrated into the same process cuts out a whole stage and enables the end product to be created under one roof. This brings many benefits, not least the savings on transport.

Wood products store carbon dioxide for the whole of their lifetime. This means that Setra’s sales volume for 2021 (1,700,000 m3) benefits the climate by storing around 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. That equates to the greenhouse gas emissions of around 150,000 Swedes.

Components for doors and windows

Planed construction timber is exported to markets including the UK and the USA.

SETRA OFFERS components of

high quality and precision for the manufacture of windows and doors. The timber comes from responsibly managed forests and we offer FSC® and PEFCTM certified products. Our components have a high heartwood content with a fine fibre structure which provides the best conditions for the efficient manufacture of doors and windows.

building and construction. It is also well suited to visible applications, such as cladding and glulam. We offer Swedish spruce products with a slow-grown, fine-knotted structure that meets high strength requirements.

All raw material comes from sustainably managed forests and is controlled under FSC® and PEFC™. We also offer certified raw material on request. In 2021, 44% of Setra’s sold wood products were certified.

easy to work with and has a wide range of applications. Setra’s pine products can be used for everything from structural timber and decking to interior cladding, furniture and flooring. The wood offers high strength and is easy to saw and work with.

Climate-smart raw material

Bioproducts At our plants, we let nothing go to waste and make sure we use 100% of every log. Bark, sawdust and wood chips are turned into biofuel for use in heating plants and to run our own operations. The sawdust is also turned into pyrolysis oil as a replacement for fossil oil in fuel. Meanwhile, the fresh raw chips – cellulose chips – are a key raw material in the paper and pulp industry.

Wood binds the equivalent of 800 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic metre of sawn timber. The table shows the binding effect in relation to the carbon dioxide emissions generated, from seedling planting to delivery to customers in different countries. For example, using wood from Setra for construction in Sweden helps to lock in 772 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic metre (800 kg minus 28 kg). 800
