Seven Premier League, or should I say the “Superb Premier League”, was undoubtedly the highlight of this semester in Sports. The eight club tournament, won eventually by Manchester United, was an epitome of footer of the highest quality along with excellent planning and execution by the Sports Council. The mega event, inaugurated on 16th September by Snehil Buxy, former Hostel General Secretary, was played over a one month period enthralling the hostel inmates every night. The finals were scheduled to coincide with 7UP, the annual hostel fest, and was a huge success in its own right. Both the finals and the opening ceremony were accompanied by huge fireworks and catchy dance numbers being played on woofers. The players for the teams were decided through a bidding process which took place 15 days prior to the start of the tournament. During the league stage, each team played all the other teams twice in a round robin format, with the top 4 teams making it to the finals. All the matches were played in the footer ground, 6 players a side with rolling substitutes. One referee would officiate the match which would also be accompanied by one of the most uncanny, funny commentary you’ll ever listen to, mostly by the sports secies and occasionally by the lukha fourthie or fifthie. Niranjan Borkar led Manchester United; Mudit Goyal led Chelsea; Anand Rathi led Barcelona and Maint Co, Mahesh

Avasare led Inter Milan finished in the top 4 in the league stage to make it to the semifinals. After two nail biting contests, Manchester United and Chelsea won their respective matches to set up the title clash. The final was a one sided affair though with United destroying Chelsea 6-1 to win the Cup, adding to their league title. Liverpool had the dubious distinction of being the only team to not win even a single match and unsurprisingly ended at bottom of the table. Overall, this year’s SPL was a huge success in every way imaginable. The quality of footer was amazingly good and in spite of the incessant rain, leading to a dangerously muddy pitch, all the matches were completed on schedule. All the matches had a good turnout especially the opening ceremony and the finals. On being asked what SPL is according to him, this is what Snehil Buxy had to say, “SPL has always been that game for my hostel, where all the people come out and have lots and lots of fun. So, seeing the way it is being conducted today I am feelig really happy.” Indeed, seeing the enthusiasm of everyone playing in the SPL was heartening- slogging it out in mud up to their knees, fighting for each ball, sliding, shooting from any angle possible. What was even more heartening was to see the people standing behind the goal post and on the balconies cheering, mostly jeering their friends. Thou shalt be missed SPL. Be back soon.

The amazing Gyrations Performance, which fetched us 2nd place

R E P O R T

This semester might not have been a great one for cult in terms of GC points won, but the enthusiasm and vigor with which every GC and other hostel events were conducted and participated in was amazing to see. From the amazing Gyrations performance, in which we stood 2nd for the first time ever to the Film GC, in which our film “Hope” came 4th, saw participation in huge numbers.

This is what Nikhil Khandelwal, aka “Khandu”, a veteran in film making and photography from our hostel had to say after the results of the Film GC came out, “We might have come 4th, but there was more feel this time round. It was a GC, a 2 day small PAF like event, but instead of one or two there were 10-20 people working! Last time we came 3rd in the Cult GC, but the hostel did not get the respect we will be getting this time round. This time

there is life in the hostel!” Indeed it was heartening to see people come out, participate and enjoy these events in such huge numbers. Social events like “7UP”, the annual hostel fest, and festivals like Dusshera, Ganesh Chaturthi and Janashtami were greeted with tremndous enthusiasm from the hostel inmates and organized with utmost dedication from the entire Cultural Council. Also there were a lot of workshops conducted and addition of inventories in all genres of Cult. Lit saw the procurement of games like Scrabble and the addition of a whopping 41 new books to the hostel library. In the Film and Media department a youtube channel, Hostel 7 Happenings, or H7H was started. The channel currently has videos of various events conducted in the hostel in addition to proper coverage of SPL. New drum sticks and tabla were added to the music room, a LED lit accolades collage put up in the mess area and also a Photography Corner, to display the best pics clicked by the hostel inmates was started.

3

The semester also saw the successful organization of various Group Discussion and fundae sessions to help improve the speaking skills of the inmates. A theatre games session, and a beginner and advanced level Photoshop workshop was also organized. All these workshops were conducted by punters in their respective fields and saw huge turnouts not only from our hostel, but from other hostels as well. All this and more in just one semester! Currently 7th in the overall Cult GC standings, we really hope to do well in the next semester to bring back the glory from last year when we finished 3rd overall. And if the hostel continues to show the same enthusiasm and dedication in the next semester, there is every reason to be hopeful too.

You keep hearing about college festivals all round the year. They turn out to be awesome which is totally expected after looking at the huge army of organisers striving to make it a huge success. But have you ever heard of a hostel fest? Less than 500 people live in one hostel, which is run by a student council of around 30 members. It is really difficult to execute an enjoyable fest in a hostel. But this year, Hostel 7 nailed it! Going by the cool name of 7UP, this fest could really be noticed at the institute level. The publicity was quite remarkable, and the fest even had its own mascot! Being 3 days long and starting on Friday night, it had various events packed up in an exciting schedule! The fest got a perfect kick-start with the DJ Night- one of the most insane ones I have ever seen. Unlimited cold drinks, party-poopers, perfect lighting and some groovy music by the DJ really set the stage up for wild dancing by over a hundred people on the rooftop. As if this wasn’t enough, it was topped with the cake cutting ceremony which officially marked the beginning of our fest. You can imagine what happened to the cake after it was left open o the people. What followed in the upcoming days was equally enjoyable. With the institute level pool competition spaced over the span of all three days, the hostel saw plenty of outsiders coming

to take the challenge. The Tea Party on Saturday afternoon had some good food and people had a good time playing Darts, Scrabble, Arm Wrestling and of course, participating in the banana eating competition!

It is really difficult to execute an enjoyable fest in a hostel. But this year, Hostel 7 nailed it!

Letting loose on the dance stage at DJ Night

That evening saw Manchester United, managed by Niranjan, being crowned as the winners of Seven Premier League after taming Chelsea 6-1 in a high adrenaline encounter. It felt great to watch the fast paced match accompanied by loads of cheering. And specially, anti-cheering! It was followed by a bonfire and instrumental eve where some guys even performed their original songs! Sunday, the last day of 7UP, had a ‘Satrangi Mela’ which saw people gorging on desi food items like Pani Puri, Bhutta, Nimbu Paani and many more. It was followed by a tug of war between UGs and PGs which was surprisingly won by the PGs! Lastly, there was the gala dinner with some tasty food being served although there was slight mismanagement towards the end. The night ended with the screening of some brilliant short movies and advertisements made by the sophies and followed by the epic movie ‘Gangs of Wasseypur 2’. A perfect end to a perfect festival!

“In the last 4 years of my stay here, for the first time saw so much enthusiasm in the hostel. 70 people turning up from the hostel for Crossy GC? Just amzing! Let’s rock the remaining year with a bang too!” This is what Anand Rathi, a fifth year student, had to say after seeing the amazing turn up for the Crossy GC. The winning Athletics team

And rock we did too. Sitting pretty at the top, occupying 2nd position

And why shouldn’t it? SPL was bigger and better this semester. And there have been regular intra events before the GCs which in themselves have seen a huge participation. There has also been improvement in the overall infrastructure of Sports with the installation of a boxing kit in the gym and a foosball table in the lounge among other things. The effort put in by the Sports Council couldn’t be lauded enough. If 2nd position in Sports GC isn’t enough for you, then we’ve got even more. Yes, hostel seven is at the top of the Tech GC standings and after a lot of hard work too. It’s amazing to see the Tech room always abuzz with the sound of someone drilling or hammering their way towards that winning bot. The work done by the Tech secies has been pretty commendable considering there is no Councillor to guide them. We can only hope that good performances

in the current Sports GC standings is more than what any hostelite could have asked for at the beginning of the year. 1st position in swimming and athletics speak for themselves. Add to that a 3rd position in squash and 4th in tennis too! And it’s not just the performance in GCs. The overall level of sports and enthusiasm among the inmates has leveled up a notch too.

from these two departments continue to flow in the next semester too. And seeing the enthusiasm in the hostel currently, it wouldn’t be surprising if we end next semester as both the Sports and Tech Champions. Wow! Sporty and techie! Hostel Seven really seems to be on a roll.

It is a moonlit night. Sitting on the staircase, the surrounding space opens into the wilderness outside- Sal trees interspersed with thick bushes. Be it the rustle of leaves at a distance due to some subtle movement or the distinctive calls of the deer and the peacock, it gives you goose bumps. The tiger is on the prowl. Is it a pair of glowing eyes far away or merely an optical illusion? The answer is uncertain…It is a rare mélange of fear and ecstasy. Occasionally, a characteristic stillness marks the surroundings- the leaves unruffled, the silence untainted. The moon bathes the distant hedges in white, creating an eerie effect. An unsettling feeling takes over. The unpredictable darkness replaces the morning innocence. You fight the irresistible urge to return and lock yourself safely in the room. But wait…Is it totally safe in there? The window with the glass panes… A shadowy movement somewhere around the staircase makes you miss a heartbeat. You spring into action but it is just your neighbor coming to stand on the porch. You return to

R A N D O M Sometimes dreams can lead to reality which is in many ways quite esoteric, as such in a dream of mine where I was viewing a section of a painting and it led to the following thought : Why do these dimensions intersect with such vulgarity, the disparity in its existence can only be superseded by a utopian sense formed by the awareness of such dimensions. They are camouflaged by ignorance invisible to the mind. Intricately hidden deep in the abyss cultivated by intersection of these dimensions. Now I only wonder

the stairs, more vigilant than ever. The night has a dreamy tinge to it. The pristine silence is intermittently broken by the nightly calls of the barking deer and the nightjar. Also, a casual chatter over coffee prevails at a distant hut. You reflect on the hardships of recent bygone days. The pent-up mind was driven to extremes. Now, at last…A gentle breeze regales the senses. You feel a divine unison with the natural aura around and get lost in thought and in time… Suddenly, the light from an official vehicle exploring the forest, rips apart the darkness …It must have unnerved something out there. The calls become shriller…You feel jittery. Sleep beckons the exhausted body but the mind is restless. Is it safe to enjoy a sound sleep, wholly unguarded, unaware of the dangers lurking outside? Others sleep off…You walk up to the window and stare outside. The night is getting darker…A forest, indeed, has a life of its own and the Kanha is unlike any forest you will ever see… Deepayan Bhadra Room 29

whether its awareness has blinded me from knowing the color I am. Flowing with the colors each speaking a tongue of the vague and the unnatural, defining the surface as each of them intermingle, smiling for they know my confusion will reach an end only when I come out of this awareness, haunting me ever since. Superfluous as it may sound the pondering over this section of the painting, it is all the more necessary for me to dig deeper for it is the origin of its very existence. Though the thought wonders

through layers of color extracting the essence upon which it feeds, the realization then occurs that I am the painting the dream vaporizes as it was formed and brings me back to reality.
