Sunflowers bloom at Grinter Farm

rinter Farm, located between Lawrence and Tonganoxie (Google Map takes you to 24154 Stillwell Road and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see the flowers from there) has been the ideal backdrop showcasing our state flower for over 30 years. The sunflowers are open and in their prime for one to two weeks each year, this year peaking on September 5. Farmer Ted plants the seeds, approximately one million of them each year, while his wife, The Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wife, posts updates of their progress on their Facebook page. Her post are highly informative and seeded with satire. The land, a treasure trove that spans almost 40 acres, is a must stop for families taking photos, professional photogs getting their next art show image and nature lovers. The private land is not primarily a tourist attraction, but a row crop farm - a fact which has not stopped thousands of tourists from visiting annually. The farm has no restrooms, storefronts or business hours. There is a donation jar, in which you are invited to leave $1 for each sunflower you take, or if you plan to monetize your photos, you can drop a little more green for those golden petals. aseveneightfive

t’s not exactly on the beaten path, but the venue that has caught Topeka’s ear this summer is plenty easy to find; located just south of Highway 24 on Kansas Blvd in North Topeka, and tucked behind Bill’s Diner, is B&B Backyard perhaps one of the best outdoor venues the Top City has ever seen. Particularly with improvements made this season, it’s as fine a spot for outdoor music as anything between here and the Crossroads in Kansas City.

B&B opened last summer with the basic ingredients for success: a solid stage/sound system, plenty of cold beer and some mighty fine BBQ. But after a successful inaugural season, the proprietors upped the ante for 2015 by expanding the stage, bringing in light and sound by the heavies at Mokan, pitching a large tent to offer more shade for the dining area, and perhaps, the coup de grace, adding a second stage that is technically inside, and allows folks to still enjoy a warm summer evening after Topeka’s 11p sound ordinance goes into effect.

Two other factors make a trip north for music even more pleasant: ample free parking (unless Nucklehead Jones is playing and nobody carpools) and the best set of clean, plentiful and well-lit port-a-potties one could hope for at an outdoor venue. All of this would be for naught, however, if the music didn’t match the venue’s quality…and it does. First, the variety is unmatched. Every genre under the sun shows up sometime each month, whether it’s country, blues, rock, metal, Americana or reggae. It makes sense for a local place to try and draw a consistent crowd by offering bands that offer up similar sets, but B&B breaks the mold by putting all kind of choices for Top City music

“We [Bill Brading and I] focus more on people being entertained and enjoying themselves, than the genres of music,” said Lee Browning, co-owner. “Good music is good music, regardless the genre. If the band is happy and the crowd is having a good time in a relaxed atmosphere, then we feel like we’ve succeeded.”

And the bands are top notch. Nucklehead Jones, the top local 80s/90s band in town, drew an insane crowd mid-summer. Local favorites Soul Rebel and the Beast and True North got their followers out in fine fashion. Additionally, top-quality national acts and amazing tribute bands (Madonna + AC/DC) have graced the stage as well. As mentioned earlier, the sound is done extremely well, which makes for a fine evening of aural entertainment. And third, the Shed offers an outstanding setting for solo and small groups to perform, which allows for even a wider variety of performances. The outdoor season is winding down for this year, but if year two is any indication, B&B will come back even badder in 2016. Local bands are likely to continue to dominate the billings, but look for bigger name bands to want to get in on the action. Be sure to bookmark its website and facebook and check it regularly. You may not want to see every band coming through, but at least four or five times through the summer, it will be the absolute perfect place to meet your friends, catch some tunes, enjoy a couple of cold ones, snarf down some top-notch BBQ and enjoy a relaxing Kansas evening outside. aseveneightfive 11

THE INDIGO FOUND IN THE GOLD

rtist Beverly Dodge Radefeld is best known for her fantastic figurative soft sculptures which have been highlighted and written about over the years as well as featured in the documentary film “Art of the Dollmaker” meanwhile her passion for painting the Flint Hills of Kansas has taken a backseat. This is a disservice I wish to remedy because as a fellow creative with many interests sometimes what is less known is as delightful as what is spotlighted. In my painting career, I’ve tried to paint landscapes and have failed miserably, so years ago I decided to leave the landscapes to the experts. However, if I could successfully paint a landscape, the one artist I would attempt to emulate is Beverly. Her talent is rendered with breathtakingly bold brush strokes filled with gooey delicious color; she captures the landscape of Kansas with awe inspiring vision that dances on the edge of abstract. Skies filled with every potential hue exposed, she depicts much more than the classic vision of cerulean and white. You see hints of yellow, orange, green and violet magically entwined among the clouds. As your eye shifts to the land, you discover another more brash

interpretation of the scene in intense, surprising strokes. What could be an assault in color is expertly combined into a glowing depiction of Color in the Clouds over Kansas. Most people find cloudy days oppressive and dark, but Beverly is motivated by the ever changing organic movement of shade, shape and light on a cloudy day. “On cloudy days, I will often see a scene with the play of light on the hills and stop to capture it with my camera,” she explains. “Then when I get back to the studio I combine several photos to translate the emotional impact of that moment.” As a result she reveals a whole new emotional dialogue captured with a surprising combination of what is seen and what is felt. Having grown up in Topeka and an alumnus of Washburn University, Beverly’s attraction to the local landscape is a long love affair. When asked why? She chuckles and replies, “You just have to look around to find wonderful things to paint.”

ails on the Trail (TOTT) is a dog-friendly 5k run/walk and family event that raises money for Topeka’s Helping Hands Humane Society (HHHS). Celebrating its sixth anniversary, TOTT has raised over $65,000 in the past five years.

The event began back in 2010 when two Topeka ladies wanted to combine their love of running and their dogs into an event that would help HHHS move to their new building. At the time, HHHS was located in North Topeka in an old, dilapidated building that was inconvenient and hard to find. HHHS had recently acquired the opportunity to buy the old Dillon’s building at 21st and Belle, but needed funds to get the building up to standard and make it livable for the 8,000 homeless pets that come through their doors each year. Lena Hayden and Linda Delarosa knew this new building was an integral part of helping the animals find their forever homes. Most importantly, HHHS would

be centrally located with more exposure to potential adopters. In an effort to help raise money, the idea for TOTT came to life. Little did the women know it would explode into one of Topeka’s favorite dog-friendly events. The 2015 Tails on the Trail is Saturday, November 7 at Shawnee North Community Center on their scenic nature trail. Everyone is invited to participate (even if you don’t have or run with a dog). The organizers of the event do a great job of getting donations, so 100 percent of your $30 registration fee goes directly to HHHS. You can also give a little extra which will help provide medication for a sheltered animal ($50) or cover the adoption fees for a dog to go to a loving home ($150). ome Sweet Home Italian Festival will take place on Saturday, September 26 at Christ the King Catholic Church located at 25th and Wanamaker from 2 to 11p. The food and entertainment starts at 5:30p. This includes a sit-down Italian dinner ($10 / $6kids), food trucks and vendors, wine and beer garden, DJ, live bands, and children’s activities including inflatables. Weather permitting, professional fireworks will end the evening shortly after dusk. “We’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of opening Christ the King Church sanctuary and 20 years since opening the Early Education Center and School”, said Rev. Mitchel Zimmerman, pastor. The theme was picked to honor Pope Francis’ visit to the US that same week. Everyone is welcome. The LaRoccas, (Vince and son Oskar), local restauranteurs, will prepare and donate the 500 lasagna dinners in honor of Irene LaRocca (mom) who passed away early this summer. Juli is proudly representing our area with her locallyinspired recipe - the KC BBQ Breakfast Sandwich. The contest in to honor the 135th Anniversary of the Thomas’ brand. o doubt one the largest “church” events of the year is the 11th annual open house and Greek Food Festival Saturday, October 10 from 11a - 3p at Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Christian Church, 2516 SW Huntoon. The event features food favorites from Green and Lebanon, including gyros, souvlakia, falafel, dolmades, spanikopita, baklava, hummus and Greek coffee. A DIFFERENT KIND OF TACO

de lengua and tripe

ast Friday, my cousin Casey and I went hunting for some tacos. We proceeded down 6th Street just east of downtown. This portion, as many know, has a collection of restaurants that are hard to resist. Along with some good Mexican cuisine stops, there are Prize Package and Chuckburger. Both of these local burger places are a must try, but this food run was for tacos, not burgers. We first stopped at Tacos El Sol, which has great tacos at great prices. They have a good smattering of taco options available: chicken, steak, pork, beef tongue and fried pork. We both ordered the beef tongue (de lengua).

We wanted to try something we’ve never had, something adventurous - a different kind of taco. The de lengua was very tender with a fatty sensation. The taste was the most beefy taste I have ever experienced. The tacos were dressed with the house sauce, white onion, cilantro and fresh limes. I ate half of the taco before I decided to see what the lime did. The acidity added a nice kick. At $1.99 (pork and chicken are $1.75) it’s easy to sample all their taco offerings for the normal price of lunch. Add in the free fried corn chips and salsa (dine in or carry out), Tacos El Sol is a must. When finished, Casey and I headed west up 6th Street to the parked Taqueria El Coyote RV. At this point we were mainly curious

about the kind of tacos we could get from a RV. Upon looking at the menu, we were not disappointed. We knew at once that we wanted to try the tripitas taco – tripe, intestine. We braved up and placed an order. The cook recommended the tripe extra crispy, saying that’s how most prefer. We didn’t argue with the chef. The tripe was crunchy and well-seasoned, topped with onions, cilantro and lime and salsa on the side. The tripe was surprisingly delicious. Get out of your safe zone and go try the tongue and tripe tacos on 6th street. They’re a good life experience and as Casey put it, “I just tried my first two organs within twenty minutes of each other!” aseveneightfive

n the outskirts of the village, rising as if it were some oblisk of fortune, the wellestablished charcuterie stands to face me, its foe, in unhindered battle. I infiltrate Herman’s Meat Market with ice in my veins and determination in my soul. Immediately I am greeted with an enthusiastic hello and the aroma of fresh smoked meats. As if to taunt me into some trap, the wares are displayed like so many temptations to a weaker man. Were I not the battle hardened, well trained ninja I am, my defenses would have been broken.

Menu Standard selection for a deli- sandwiches, chips, fountain drinks. Though, the meat selection is astounding- pork, chicken, beef, bison, turkey, all available for purchase by the pound in addition to your deli selection. Condiments are abundant as well to add to your sandwich. A fair selection and I am able to choose a delight that will satiate my ninja’s hunger… for now.

A quaint establishment, not many tables but then this is not fully designed to be an eat in restaurant. Not my first encounter with limited seating so I am not affected. I step up to the well-worn counter to order my meal and the mood is hurried. I am slightly taken aback by the quick nature of the process but I regain my footing and regroup. Otherwise, friendly and accommodating. The place feels like an honest deli with no room for small talk or foolishness. This adds to the charm.

Herman's Meat and Deli 4 Fists Friendliness Apart from the hurried nature of my order, the staff is kind and friendly as I make my way around the store. The cashier speaks with me about the new store opening on Huntoon and tells me they will have the same deli but with a restaurant that seats 50 hungry ninjas. The current store will close and move to the new location, still offering the same wares.

Food The sandwich I order is fantastic. Flavorful and delectable. The pork melts in your mouth and pairs well with the sauce and condiments chosen. Gigantic portions and well baked bread give this sandwich a well-rounded appearance and flavor. Chips and a drink to go along make this a large meal enough for this ninja’s hunger to be defeated.

Funds I will break a tradition for Herman’s. I was able to procure a “12 inch” sandwich, chips, drink, store-made BBQ sauce, cookie, and a half pound of jalapeno bacon for 12 dollars. Given the portion size and quality of the meal, it was easily worth 20 dollars, just for the sandwich meal. Herman’s Meat + Deli, a Topeka staple for years, will continue to thrive in the new location and will continue to see my ninja skills devouring more sandwiches as often as I can hold them. aseveneightfive

ACCUMULATION: WINTER REBELLION

very couple of years, New Belgium Brewing (Fort Collins, CO) switches up their seasonal releases. It keeps their brewers creative, and keeps our beer pallets rejoicing. Out in October is Accumulation, a white IPA, a refreshing change from the normal stout of winter lager. This white IPA was inspired by the white beauty that falls each winter in Colorado, according to the brewery. Mosaic and Amarillo hops bring a snowy soft citrus and fruit flavor to the beer which finishes with a layer of bitter and a bit of wheat for a smooth finish. The beer is refreshing and a direct revolt to the long standing tradition of brewing dark winter beers, thus we salute you, Grady Hull, you rebellious brewer you. So wear your flip flops all winter long and grab a few cases of Accumulation White IPA. aseveneightfive

DESCHUTES | JUBEL ALE This year marks the 28th bottling of Jubelale, the first beer that Deschutes Brewery ever bottled. For the last 21 years, a different local (Oregon) artist has been chosen to create an original piece of art for the label. This year’s artist is by Taylor Rose who used pencil, ink, watercolor and digital to create the label. Jubelale is perfect for winter gatherings and festival by nature and name. It’s characterized by a large malt body balanced with hop bitterness derived from a variety of American and European hops.

SHOCK TOP | CHOCOL ATE Shock Top expanded their seasonal beers two years ago with Chocolate Wheat. The unfiltered ale is brewed with chocolate, caramel and black malts and aged on vanilla and cocoa beans. The beer will be sold in a combo pack with Shock Top Belgian White and the two can be mixed together to create the “Choc Top.”

A break with microbrew tradition, Isolation Ale does not have the customary spices and herbs beers of its genre are known for. This blend is, however, a style of holiday brew prevalent in the English tradition, most notably due to its malty, strong accents and coppery color.
