MORBID CURIOSITY

_________________________________________ A Play in Two Acts by Bruce Loeschen Shannon J. Reilly

aking a page from William Gibson, author of "The Miracle Worker," Shannon J. Reilly submitted "Morbid Curiosity" under the guise of Bruce Loeschen to the Topeka Civic Theatre (TCT) play reading committee in Fall 2016. Loeschen is Reilly's brother-in-law and an artist living in Minnesota. He created the amazing city montage that hangs on the wall by the south doors of TCT. Reilly took this road because as artistic director of TCT he wanted the play to get a fair chance. More than 140 plays will show up on the large boardroom table between August and December each year, silently auditioning and hoping to captivate a committee member who will then campaign other members to read the play, bringing it to the forefront of the selection process. "Morbid Curiosity" was written in a matter of three months and is the second play Reilly has written "for himself." "I'm hired to write plays and short films all the time," said Reilly. "I write TCT's Art of Murder each year, skits for Laugh Lines and more - but this was just for the love of writing. Plus, I wanted to create a play that was smart, funny and the whole family could enjoy.”

"Alex reminded me of a play I wrote titled 'Voiceless'," recalled Reilly, "It was about a jester who gestures. I wrote it 18 years ago and gave it to Alex on our second

anniversary. She had kept it all these years. ‘Voiceless’ is a two-page poem. A love letter to her [Alex].” Reilly continues, “'Morbid Curiosity' is a love letter to TCT. I thought about Topeka Civic Theatre when I wrote it. I thought about her building. Her stage. What the possibilities for the set, lighting, sound could be. I thought about our season members. About having a truly honest and funny show. Not having to apologize for cheesy lines or for a show that was too dirty. Something my son and daughter could see." The reality is that "Morbid Curiosity" was born on the stage of Topeka Civic Theatre during a Laugh Lines sketch. Shannon recalls writing a sketch about a really boring ghost. He thought it hilarious, but when they performed it, nobody laughed. "After the performance, Bethany Dunham, in passing said, 'You know, that would make for a better play then a sketch.' I guess I never forgot her words," said Reilly. For a man who has directed 184 shows at Topeka Civic Theatre, been on stage more times than not and seen several of his commissioned works produced, Reilly says, “‘Morbid Curiosity’ has been the most terrifying and wonderful experience of my life." The humble director and his 13-year-old son Finnegan opened final dress on June 1. The audience comprised of guests of the cast and crew and media applauded Reilly with blind support, anxious to see the work derived from his creativity. A standing ovation ended the final dress with a roaring applause. They had just experienced the world premiere of "Morbid Curiosity." They had just watched a play, written for them. aseveneightfive

WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW When real estate agent Benny Dempsey stumbles across Beckford Manor just outside Salem, Mass., he immediately sees a financial investment worth millions. The large Victorian mansion has been unoccupied since the ’70s and would be an ideal attraction for ghost hunters that flock to Salem in search of a macabre experience. Benny convinces his half-brother, Henry Valentine, and his wife Elizabeth to buy the home and run it as a haunted bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, the only ghost residing, Wilbur Nash, a lonely librarian wants nothing to do with the plan to promote him as a morbid curiosity.

Wilbur Nash – DEVAN R. GARCIA A neurotic librarian. While Reilly was a librarian during grad school, it was an old roommate that sparked Wilbur’s neurotic undertones.

FAIRTY TALES + OTHER FUTILE FANTASIES

ARTIST MICHELLE LEIVAN Michelle Leivan is not a stranger to the seveneightfive audience. For several years she’s been a contributor to our ARTitude column, sharing news and insights of Topeka-based art and artists. Leivan is also owner of Art Print Express, which provides art reproduction, giclée printing and framing services. As a painter, she uses broad strokes and bright colors to capture the objects of her work. Lately, the “object” of Leivan’s paintings have been herself.

Starting with her series, #BeingMySelfie, Leivan used inspiration from the social media ubiquity, the “selfie.” Leivan says, “The impressions of digital self-portraits are fascinating to me as being a part of our social media culture. What does it reveal about a person? There are complex human emotions behind each selfie in how it is picked by the 'artist' and then how it is seen by the world in which it is shared.” She continues, “I am creating my own ‘selfies’ through the age-old practice of painting, combining the historical journey of the original artist’s self-portrait method and the modern selfie photo. This allows me an expressive visual dialogue on the human condition created by social media and insight on our place in the world at large.” This expression has evolved in Leivan’s work, bringing her to her latest series, “Fairy Tales & Other Futile Fantasies,” now showing at the Mulvane Art Museum, located on the campus of Washburn University. As the narrative of social media has shifted from what could be found in a typical, and now mostly obsolete, family Christmas newsletter (weddings, graduations, new jobs, new house, etc.) to the realm of politics and pop culture, Leivan has inserted herself in these discussions. You can see her as Lady Liberty or Lady Justice, questioning how we’ve gotten where we are as a society. You can see all of us as voters in her selfie, complete with straight jacket, stuck between the two former presidential candidates, Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton. You can see her about to rip her hair out, she is asking, “What are We Doing to Ourselves?” Leivan is holding a laptop, is plugged into a smartphone, wearing a smartwatch and standing on an open book. Legible on the page: “Human Capacity for Jackassery is Universal.” Should she hit the “send” button to post how she really feels? By definition alone, selfies should be very personal: this is me, and this is my current status. But the culture of social media can connect, polarize, engage and disenfranchise us all equally. Leivan illustrates this perfectly. View her show at the Mulvane, and you’re likely to find your selfie. aseveneightfive

"Your vote doesn’t matter.” “No one listens to us anyway.” ‘I don’t even know who is running.” “It’s not going to change anything anyway.” If you’re like me, you’ve likely heard one or more of these statements uttered by a fellow millennial or young professional on at least a semi-regular basis. The numbers are even more illuminating. In the 2016 election in Topeka and Shawnee County, voters between the ages of 18-24 accounted for only 8.5 percent of registered voters. That means that from 109,731 voters registered in Shawnee County, just over 9,000 were between the age of 1824. I could go on, but the point is that we have a challenge that we need to address. This coming fall, we will be conducting elections for Topeka's Mayor and City Council Members. These elections MATTER. These individuals are the ones that often have the greatest impact on your life. They decide everything from how much you pay in sales tax to what your roads and streets look like. This election couldn’t come at a more critical time for our community. In the coming months and years our local elected officials will be making decisions on issues affecting downtown redevelopment, quality of life, economic development and so much more. The Forge Young Professionals organization is working with community partners to develop the “Forge Your Future” campaign. As the leading organization for organizing and advocating on behalf of young professionals in Topeka, Forge is aiming to increase voter registration both amongst those ages 18-24 and ages 18-39.

“Forge Your Future” will focus initially on voter registration- to ensure as many young professionals as possible are registered in order to participate in the democratic process. However, we know that is not enough. From there, “Forge Your Future” seeks to arm young voters with the tools they need to be educated in advance of Election Day. I have the honor of leading this campaign, and am looking forward to working with a broad network of community volunteers to make this happen. In the coming months, look for voter registration opportunities at each of Forge’s events leading up to the voter registration deadline of July 11. In addition, you’ll be able to follow information on the upcoming election via social media, and through door-to-door literature drops from volunteers. Forge will be working with seveneightfive magazine to co-host a candidate forum, their exclusive “Vote Damnit” party on August 1 and November 7. None of this can happen without the talent and dedication of volunteers- that’s where you come in. hat's in a name? For the band Kangaroo Ali, some would offer up, the name came from a chance meeting of a band member with a marsupial that packed a mighty punch while on an African safari. Others suggest it was chosen from a list of names thrown into the pot while the band discussed names under, let’s just say, creative circumstances. Whatever the story, the name well reflects the creativity, wallop and breadth of a real up-and-comer on the Topeka music scene. The quintet is pulling out all the stops in bringing a wide range of musical influences to the endeavor: funk, driving rock and a little R&B thrown in for good measure. Though they started out, like many bands, doing covers, they have taken song-writing seriously and are creating a song list of originals they hope will open the doors of venues in Colorado, Texas and Missouri. Like most bands, personnel changes have affected the band overtime but what has not changed is the reliance on a hard-hitting guitar duo, a skilled rhythm section and a front man with a ton of energy delivering some high-powered vocals.

The band’s roots go back over three years ago. Three original members are in the current lineup: vocalist Jeffery Hix, guitarist Ryan McGowan and drummer Nico Williams. Bassist Matt Elton joined later with the newest member being guitarist Brett Branam. All but Brett lives in Topeka, with Nico and Ryan having deep T-Town roots. Hix, the main lyricist who grew up in Illinois, credited diverse artists like Hank William, Otis Redding and Robert Plants as influences. The Grateful Dead and its lyricist Robert Hunter are also way high on his list of favorites. But Hix also cites the written word as playing an essential role in his songwriting as he often looks to his own works for ideas and inspiration. Ryan’s background started with learning the guitar and clarinet. As a guitarist, Ryan cited a wide range of influences, from jazz heavyweight Wes Montgomery to the incomparable Jimi Hendrix to Steve Vai, who first hit the scene in the early '80s with Frank Zappa. The two guitar players list has some similarities but lots of differences as Brett, being the oldest, listed popular bands from the '90s when he was a teenager as his biggest influences: Alice and Chains, Stone Temple

Pilots, Nirvana, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Brett expressed the powerful influence his dad, a musician from the '70s, had on him. He insisted Brett start his guitar playing learning even earlier contemporary artists like Simon and Garfunkel and Johnny Cash. Nico lays down the groove for Kangaroo Ali and does it with the expertise of playing in a lot of bands since his youth including Topeka High’s drum line and jazz ensemble. A graduate of Washburn University's school of music, some of Nico's diverse musical influences include Umphrey's McGee, Steve Reich, Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis and Lettuce. Matt is the youngest of the five, but packs plenty of expertise. He loves to bring the funk on the bass, for sure, but when you hear him play and sing a Pink Floyd tune on the guitar at a jam, you know he’s got plenty of classic rock in his blood. Songwriting is team effort for the band. There’s even a big white board in the rehearsal studio where the members can keep track of progress and ideas. The songs usually start with some sort of guitar of bass riff and then Jeffery does his thing by bringing a melody line and lyrics to the table.

As mentioned earlier, the band has gone through personnel changes since it recorded six songs last fall at Topeka’s Rundown studio under the watchful eye of George Henry Valyer IV. The six are still in the KA repertoire along with some new originals and sturdy covers like the Allman Brothers’ Whipping Post and Soundgarden’s Spoonman. The EP, Ungloved, shows off the range of the band. The first tune, Truce, is a hard-hitting rocker with two guitars swapping rhythms and leads. Last Call has a strong R and B feel to it and follows a couple into the last of their relationship. The funk comes out in Neon Holidaze, and Castaway brought a little snippet of The Beatles Ticket to Ride to this listener’s ear at the start and then moves into a double time bluegrass portion. Good stuff! The band is working on songs for the next recording and getting out and about a lot around Topeka. Matt and Nico are often spotted at the jams at Quinton’s and all of them are apt to be found at Speck’s Sunday Family Jam. Ryan summed up their efforts by saying, “”We’re getting the Kangaroo Ali brand out there. aseveneightfive

Kangaroo Ali is a powerhouse 5-piece rock band that is driven by generations worth of influences that are exposed in the roots of their writing. Kangaroo Ali is a different kind of animal that hits hard with a sound that is loud and proud.

Luckily, the weather will revert back to cooler days in a few short months, but we're also reverting back to our history's past with the rise of white supremacy and authoritarian narcissism.

What, you disagree? Then I guarantee you did not enjoy the recently released "Unamerican Activities" by punk rock band Red Kate. The ferocious polemic on the current state of affairs was the plot of Red Kate's sophomore album and turns yet another page with their latest release, a split EP from Red Kate and Stiff Middle Fingers. Listening serves as a deep inhale of toxic bullshit and an aggressive exhale of every expletive you wish you could scream. The only references to the past which are championed on the newly released split ep is the fact the album is served on a 7'' vinyl, and stays true to the hardcore punk formula with songs clocking in around two minutes in length. This allows Stiff Middle Fingers' lead singer Travis Arey the opportunity to hold nothing back while he expresses disenchantment with society, work, personal relations and more. His scream has nice melodic undertones, backed by a Flogging Molly-like urgency of the pounding drums, serving as your voice of angst. Each song is 120 seconds of complex time and sporadic signature changes that shred and pump your heart.

It is the third record from punk rock and roll stalwarts Red Kate (Kansas City). Sidenote: seveneightfive will now refer to the duo as The Punks of I70.)

Increasingly, dogs are being integrated into every aspect of our family life — and that includes when dining out on the town. Local health codes restrict dogs from being able to dine indoors (with the exception of service animals), but many restaurants accommodate our furry friends by creating designated outdoor, pet-friendly dining patios.

Before you go leashing up Fido for a trip to our favorite restaurant or bar, there are several things to consider. While you may be excited to share your lunch hour with your precious pet, restaurants are busy places; patio areas can be small and crowded with tables, chairs and hustling wait staff. Loud noises, laughter and chatter of other patrons and the potential for the everyday kitchen disasters like dropped dishes and spilled beverages could be a recipe for creating one stressed-out pup. Julie Castaneda, owner of Dog Day Afternoon Pet Ranch & Resort suggests that dog owners take an honest look at their dog’s behavior, temperament and obedience training before setting up a doggy date night. "Only dogs with a solid training foundation, who enjoy the hustle and bustle of life's chaos and have a greater tolerance for the unexpected, should be asked to join mom or dad for a night out. We don't want to set our dogs up to fail, especially in a public setting where the dog or a human guest could risk injury." If you don't think your dog will enjoy the event, but you feel guilty leaving him alone while you party, consider dropping your dog off earlier for a fun day of doggy daycare. This way your pup can burn off some energy and "sleep it off " later while you enjoy a nice evening out with a human companion. And keep in mind, just because a restaurant or bar has a patio, it doesn’t necessarily follow that pets are allowed. ome people believe life is better with a dog. They’re lovable, loyal, brave and bold, and their quirks are surely entertaining. One of my favorite things about having pets is being able to engage with other owners about the cute, funny and amazing things about sharing life with a furry friend. The Bark Park at Gage Park can be a pretty cool place to meet other dog owners, but sometimes we long for more than a shining sun and beautiful breeze to strike up a conversation about our canine companions. If you find yourself in this situation, try toting your Toto to one of the fine establishments in town that welcome leashed pets on their patios. You can order dinner and drinks and your server may even bring a dish of water for Fido. If your human friends aren’t available, your pet can double as your date, or serve as a conversation-starter to help you meet someone new. I’ve found that I’m more likely to approach a person with a canine companion than a stranger without, so if you’re shy this could be your ticket to an awesome social life. A few things to remember when your dog is your date: Most restaurants will not allow any animal inside the restaurant unless they are certified therapy/guide animals, per health code regulations, so be sure to find the patio gate for entering and exiting the premises. Also, be mindful of other patrons. Some people are just not “dog people” and can be fearful of your puppy. Keep your pet on a lead at all times and always pay attention to your surroundings. Lastly, pick up after your pet. No explanations necessary, in my opinion.

For daredevils and dreamers of all ages, rediscover the spectacle of the death-defying Evel Knievel show, now open and flying sky-high in Topeka. Witness the incredible collection of the physics-defying bikes that launched the legend. See his iconic 1974 Mack Truck & Trailer "Big Red." Examine the star-spangled helmets (battered, and beaten and beautiful) that undoubtedly saved Evel’s uninsurable life more than once. Listen to the eye-widening, imagination-sparking, and the doesn’t-seem-possible stories that defined an American icon.

obert “Evel” Knievel’s dream of creating a museum to “house his life’s memorabilia” is now a reality. As early as 1976, Knievel announced his plans to build a museum. Surprising to many, the Evel Knievel Museum is not located in Butte, Montana (Knievel’s hometown); nor is it in Las Vegas, Nevada (the venue of his infamous Wide World of Sports Caesars Palace jump). It is, in fact, in Topeka, Kansas. As it turns out, half of Knievel’s crew was from Kansas, including Mike Draper (Wichita). Draper says it’s an honor to be part of history, and is thrilled to help fill in the missing pieces. When restoring “Big Red,” Knievel’s Mack Truck, the Historic Harley-Davidson crew found Draper’s first-hand accounts priceless. “It’s this kind of detail and stories from people who were there that bring the museum to life and provide an amazing and memorable to visitors,” says Mike Patterson, Owner, Historic Harley-Davidson and Museum Co-Founder. One of the best stories was that George “Joie” Chitwood (of the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show) got his racing start right here at the Topeka Shawnee County Fairgrounds, less than 100 yards from the home of the Evel Knievel Museum. The Joie Chitwood Thrill Show made a chance visit to Butte in 1953, where 15-year-old Bobby Knievel was in the stands. “The first time I saw Joie Chitwood perform in my hometown, Butte, Montana, the thing that impressed my 15-year-old mind the most was his intoxicating spirit and incredible showmanship. Fast-forward nearly six decades to 2012. Lathan McKay, a young professional skateboarder had grown up admiring Knievel as the quintessential fulfillment of individuality and the American Dream. What started as a purchase of three sets of Knievel’s leathers turned into a four-year venture collecting Knievel memorabilia across the country. After meeting the family, McKay was further inspired to preserve Knievel’s legacy, and took his quest to a new level, adding “Big Red,” Knievel’s ’74 Mack Truck to his collection in 2013. Due to their outstanding work on Jerry Lee Lewis’ 1959 Harley-Davidson Panhead, the Lewis family recommended contacting Historic Harley-Davidson (Topeka, Kansas) for “Big Red’s” restoration. The idea for building an Evel Knievel Museum developed as the partnership between Patterson, McKay, Historic Harley-Davidson and the Knievel Family grew, along with McKay’s collection. Patterson states, “Our vision grew quickly alongside Lathan’s collection, which was both sizable and significant. We knew we had something the World would want to see, and we had to do it justice. ” Patterson’s commitment included reserving 13,000 square feet of the dealership’s 16,000 square foot expansion for the Museum. “As more items surfaced, we dedicated more space to the Museum; we even reconfigured the floorplans to accommodate several special items we received toward the end.” With a total investment of more than $5 million, the Evel Knievel Museum allows visitors to experience Evel Knievel’s journey to super-stardom, viewing hundreds of authentic artifacts that belonged to the most legendary, death-defying daredevil of all time. aseveneightfive Press release submitted by The Evel Knievel Museum. I am greeted almost immediately by a friendly waitress.. Still stunned, she smiles and again I falter as the joy of the decor has clearly saturated the enemy stronghold and is radiating through the staff and guests. I am seated, brought a menu, and an ice cold water before I can fully recover from my first parlay.

As I scan the selections I am given a brief respite to recover my thoughts and my battle resolve. I am here on a mission to take down my enemy, I must remain focused. The menu is extensive, though not overly, with standard fare for this type of establishment. Most of the items I have also found in other similar battles, nothing stands out to me so I make my choice and plan the strategy for my next attack.

When my meal is presented to me it is neat, tidy, well plated and proportionate. I selected an entrée with a variety of enchiladas and I begin my assessment of this piece of the enemy resistance. Something is missing. Again, standard fare and nothing sets this fortress apart from others I have battled. The dessert I choose, sadly, tastes frozen and pre-made...
