buildings for which one wishes to preserve the original aesthetic impact, as well as for installation in new buildings to ensure maximum transparency and elegance. The innovative tie rod system is the result of collaboration between our Technical Department and the University of Florence, Department of Mechanics and Industrial Technologies. Obtained via AISI 316L stainless steel mechanical processing, this system offers a new design concept whose novelty is to have a rotule with a 45째 slanted pivot. This structure differs from those currently on the market as the tie rod is connected directly to the ball-joint ball, minimising eccentricity that could cause tension, resulting in the glass panel breaking; that is why the system is ideal for overhangs of substantial dimensions, ensuring safety in line with the regulations in force.

SYSTEM FOR GLASS CANOPIES - GLASS CANOPY IDEA GENERATION The current market offers a number of canopies that, while differing in design, lead to the diagram shown in the figures to the side, i.e. the glass is held by four traditional rotules suitably anchored to the wall and to the various accessories.

Once on-stream, the balance configuration of the canopy goes from diagram A to diagram B as shown in the figure; so the threaded pivot of the front rotule tends to align itself along the tie rod axis. Usually, traditional rotules allow an adjustment of ± 10° according to the axis of the threaded pivot and therefore, knowing that the tie rod is slanted by about 45°, one can never achieve perfect alignment. In this situation the glass no longer works as hinged, but as jammed, thus considerably increasing the stresses on the panel, near the hole.

Hence the idea of making a special rotule, where the threaded pivot always works according to its own axis, as shown in the figures to the side.

In every on-stream configuration, thanks to this new system, the tie rod and the threaded pivot are perfectly aligned so the glass is always hinged. One therefore achieves greater canopy stability, considerably reducing the stresses on the panel.

The new 45° rotule has been tested on the assembled elements via the Ansys calculation code. The test has been carried out by applying a load (F) along the direction of the tie rod equal to 3500N. 62

CONCLUSIONS:

TENSILE STRENGTH TEST - F

The load tests were performed with the universal testing machine MTS810, equipped with hydraulic Instron grips. The equipment used for load application were designed to reproduce the real operating conditions. A tensile load was applied in axis with the threaded pivot, until breakage, operating with displacement control loading (5 mm/min) and measuring the force applied 20 times per second. The chart indicates the results relating to the worst of the 5 samples tested. 3500 3000

SYSTEM FOR GLASS CANOPIES - GLASS CANOPY DIAGRAM OF RECOMMENDED PANES The table below shows the indicative measures and the thicknesses recommended for the glass panels supported with the GLASS CANOPY system. The geometry of the panel was evaluated as if it were stratified tempered glass with PVB. The thickness of the glass was calculated considering an accidental load equal to 160 kg/m2 and the weight of the panel. For the calculation one also used the safety coefficients required by Draft Standard PrEN13474-3, whereby the mechanical behaviour of stratified safety glass (according to UNI7697) narrows down to the analysis of equivalent monolithic glass. In the event of tempered glass it is recommended to subsequently subject it to the HST treatment (Heat Soak Test) to drastically reduce the risks of spontaneous breakage. 85

The table below shows the indicative measures and the thicknesses recommended for the glass panels supported with the GLASS CANOPY system. The geometry of the panel was evaluated as if it were stratified tempered glass with PVB. The thickness of the glass was calculated considering an accidental load equal to 160 kg/m2 and the weight of the panel. For the calculation one also used the safety coefficients required by Draft Standard PrEN13474-3, whereby the mechanical behaviour of stratified safety glass (according to UNI7697) narrows down to the analysis of equivalent monolithic glass. In the event of tempered glass it is recommended to subsequently subject it to the HST treatment (Heat Soak Test) to drastically reduce the risks of spontaneous breakage.

The load tests were performed with the universal testing machine MTS810, equipped with hydraulic Instron grips. The equipment used for load application were designed to reproduce the real operating conditions. A tensile load was applied in axis with the threaded pivot, until breakage, operating with displacement control loading (5 mm/min) and measuring the force applied 20 times per second. The chart indicates the results relating to the worst of the 5 samples tested.
